Round 2 - Final Fantasy IV vs Final Fantasy VII
vs.
DRAGOONS ALL THE WAY.
There was a time I would have said FFVII, but times has changed. After playing IV I rank it a little bit higher than VII, so IV.
I look forward to the result

Small IV lead right now... hrmmm
FFIV. You guys might be surprised by me voting for that one.
Cid isn't on the logo :colbert:
Kain is my second favorite Dragoon :jess:

UGH why do you guys ruin EVERYTHING. IV needs to win
four
Tough choice. Well not really, but IV and VII are right next to each other in my personal rankings.
Put this poll anywhere else in the world and the result is a no brainer. But at EoFF I feel the people who need to prove that FFVII isn't as great as everyone thinks it is might eventually outweigh those who know that it is.
I can't decide whether to vote the honest option or the "if FFVII is knocked out this early the fallout is going to be utterly hilarious" option
It's uber-close.
I'll keep it 100 & admit I voted for IV. I actually love both games. I love the materia system in 7, as well as the characters & story.
However, I've played IV/II more times than one can imagine. To me, it was the proper successor to FFI, not just because it was the next sequel in the US, but because a lot of the themes in the game reflected that game's.
iV is number 4 and VII is number 5 on my list so they are close but i mean who doesnt like chocobo farms. wait.. thats FFVII i mean who doesnt like the first black chocobo ( i think)
FF IV!
If you choose the premo, trying to hard to not try so hard, polygon riddled excuse to practice animal husbandry over the video game that got me started then foa doesn't love you.
I see you have voted incorrectly. Shame, thought we were buds.
EDIT: Here are the reasons you are wrong, and there are spoilers.
1) Kain is the best good guy turned bad guy turned good guy TURNED BAD GUY turned good guy of all time.
2) Tifa is the crappiest replacement heroine of all time. "The girl you had some feelings for totally died trying to save the world, but the world doesn't mean trout to me if my boo is sick! I will honor my murdered friend's sacrifice by TOTALLY GIVING UP THE CAUSE FOR WHICH SHE DEADED OVER"
3)You know that Cid Highwind's schematics for the Shetland Pony came from original designs by Cid Pollendina.
4) The black mages of FFIV could cast a spell MULTIPLE TIMES IN BATTLE that would destroy Gaia- because Earth is a cooler planet than Gaia. I'm talkin' bout Meteo. YES METEO, I PLAY SNES BITCH.
5) Cecil Harvey is literally part dragon. Cloud Strife is partly a little bitch.
6) No ridiculous chick fights in FFIV, but people get slapped around with magnanimity.
7) Rosa and Rydia fly through space HANGING ON TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE BIG WHALE so they can preserve their group and fight to save the world, even if it means dying. I already told you how Tifa gave up on the world to push Cloud around in a wheelchair while he "thought some trout through."
8) Cloud is totally faking his disability and doesn't even need a wheelchair.
9) The puppet government in FFIV is actually a puppet - King Baron is a costume worn by one of the four fiends!
10) Spoony. Bard.
the only thing that FFVII has that is nearly as good is Sailor Suit Barrett.
Who did I vote for? Let's discuss the post I got one of my first rep from...
The 12 (so far) people who have voted for IV...
You are bad people and you should feel bad.
Most of that may be true but all of it is story related. I wouldn't even concede that IV has the better story to begin with, but that's not what influenced my choice.
FFVII is just more fun to play. It has a lot more customization and freedom than IV, which is just a pretty basic level up system with a few summoning side quests thrown in. VII allows you to customize characters with materia, and collecting and leveling it is certainly more interesting than the basic experience gains of IV. There's also a variety of side quests to find the characters' final limit breaks or ultimate weapons or the very best materia through the Chocobo races or battle arena. The limit break alone added another layer to the ATB, which was in its infant stages with IV. And if you don't like your party, you can switch them out.
Maybe FFIV would be the more interesting movie to watch but FFVII is the better game to play.
I vote for VII.
I don't think IV had any particular mechanic or story element that it performed to a greater degree than VII. VII had the more engaging narrative and a greater development of personalities. The only thing that VII doesn't have is "You Spoony Bard". :)
1. Sailor Suit Barret
2. Mukki
3. Don Corneo
4. Dio
5. Mr Dolphin
6. Bugenhagen
7. Cloud cross-dressing
8. Cloud being forced into a hot tub and "rubbed" by a bunch of burly men, see point #2
9. Cloud raiding Tifa's underwear drawer
10. Shut up! Sit your ass down in that chair and drink your goddamn TEA!Indeed. Fair play though, I do like a good underdog story.
Final Fantasy IV, but it's obvious that Cloud is going to take the trophy home over Cecil lol.
This is what I love about EoFF. No sarcasm whatsoever. Every single game has a lot of dedicated fans and even the smaller games get a lot of love.
I am loving how close this poll is. I hope all the polls are like this. I hope an underdog takes it all. This is what EoFF is about!
the almighty reason how FF IV slightly beats VII.
5 party members is cool. and its better than 4. so that means its wayy better than 3
i mean why 3!?!? so stupid it means you cant play co-op or anything less strategies can be placed and stuff.
i hate 3 characters its goddamn horrifying. and also square pull a moomba on us in the northern crater.
remember how in FFVI dungeons like pheonix cave and the final dungeon had yoou split parties? yeah well ffvii does it too. except you CANT control them... like wtf is that all about
dont get me started on lazy villian. sephiroth. ( he is not the worst)
this is a random rant from me again. and after much consideration i realized. that 3 isnt horrifying and i was just overexagerating. also FF7 has epic dog guy in it so yeah.
For me, Final Fantasy VII takes it and it's not even remotely close.
Final Fantasy VII.
Sorry, FFIV lovers. It's a vote for VII from me!
(SPOILER)I've not even played IV
Nostalgic fanboys/girls. The whole lot of you!
There was a two vote difference before I went to bed, then I awoke to this. Matt, I demand a review of all voters to weed out mults!
FFIV definitely!! It is the best Final Fantasy game!!
FF VII, of course. It is far and away the better game. It has the deepest and most involving setting, story and cast and is also the best told in terms of narrative and pacing; specially with the way the story drives the gameplay and changes in many spots how you interact with the game. Cloud being an unreliable narrator was a refreshing touch as well as it made things more engaging and interesting by planting an element of doubt on the player. The materia system which (like everything in the game) flows nicely from the story and setting, is also lots of fun as it adds a whole layer of customisation that is completely absent from FF IV; which has every character boxed in, as it were, in their respective “jobs”.
This last thing is something that I feel detracts from FF IV’s battle system since in spite of being able to control five characters at a time, there is in fact less room for strategy than in VII which only has three party members. First, due to the lack of customisation of the characters themselves, second due to the game not allowing you to change your party members at will and lastly, because in spite of IV introducing the ATB system…there is no gauge bar to indicate which character’s turn is next. So, you basically just have more characters to attack with, not really more room for strategy or experimentation.
As far as the villains goes, sure Kain is quite a good character but his whole switching between bad and good guy is not really that meaningful as he is being mind controlled by Golbez, who is himself being mind controlled by Zeromus who in turn is a rather tacked on villain. It sort of cheapens things a bit. By contrast, in VII Sephiroth is the one doing the controlling from the beginning and there is no tacked on / ad hoc villain which is introduced at the end to take away from this. V did something similar with ExDeath and I think that like with VII it worked very well.
All of which is not to say that FF IV is a bad game, god knows it will always hold a special spot for me as it was the very first FF game I ever played; and like VII, it is a very important entry in the series as both games were milestones that pushed the series forward in important ways. But FF VII works better on very much every level and is more fun to play as well.
From experience, FFVII haters are a lot more rabid than its fanboys/girls.
I voted IV because I liked the story and characters more
I'd say about equal on gameplay though. Each had its strengths and weaknesses
I think both are good solid games. I ultimately voted for VII but I would not mind one bit if IV won.
