Probably III, although VIII and IX also come to mind for me.
But I think I'd go with III. Decent entry all around but didn't really stand out to me at all.
When I read this thread title the first thing that jumped out to me was FF5. It's a good game that I enjoy but is out-shined by my favourite titles in the series but still better than all the titles I dislike.
Either it's I, III or IV.
Interesting question Laddy!
I think I'll have to go with III. It's a solid, competent game. It has no real low points, and it did innovate with the job system, but ultimately it doesn't really have many high points either and is now more-or-less forgettable in the shadow of other FFs that have plots and/or do the job system better.
FFV has the best job system. For me, FF1 is the most average. FFIX or FFVI after that.
IV was pretty average. Same with 9 I guess.
FFIV for me, and FFIX comes next.
IX and VI are right in that middle for me. XIII could also be in that vicinity. (Note that my "middle" is incredibly biased because the top is huge and the bottom is small.)
Can't think of a single entry I'd considered average.
I have never had a "meh" reaction to any FF game. I've either raved about its good points or ranted about its bad points.
The idea of just being "that was alright" is a strange one.
For me it would be VI
III for me. The music is okay, the job system is ok. Everything is ok.
IV. Nothing in particular really stood out to me, positively or negatively.
Average in terms of quality? FF4. Better than the first 3 and FF5 but worse than all of the PS1 and PS2 games imo.
FF3
It's very lukewarm water. It's just ok.
Curious what people consider a great or above average Final Fantasy as I'm surprised by a lot of the entries that are being brought up in here.
Yeah, probably FFI but that's just because it's very basic and lacking in story. Being the first one and nearly 30 years old though that's to be expected.
I'd have to go with 5. I believe all PS era games to be A+, and the same with PS2. In 5, there was nothing that jumped out at me as great, but also nothing that made me put the game down, like 2 or 3 at times. 4 is a masterpiece and 1 is probably my number two answer.
Average?
Remember that each new game in the series has a new world and story, and they tweak the gameplay engine, trying each time to do something different than last time.
It's hard to compare the series because each game is so different from the others...what a crew, indeed.
That said, if you want a game that is strictly an average ff game, Mystic Quest fits that bill. They don't get much more bland and stripped down, but the music is superb.
It's just a shame that the story plays like it was written in three days by a marmoset.
Clearly we can arrive at a mathematical answer to the question using:

Which turns out the correct answer is FF 7.5
So... is that Advent Children then?
I find the number funny because for me FF7 is my favourite and FF8 is my least favourite, so 7.5 would then fall right in the middle of the series.
Average? XII. I didn't really love it, I didn't hate it, but I did finish it. That makes it average.
VII. Not only is it an average game for FF (Falling somewhere in the middle of my favorites), it sit's around the most average RPG of all time.
For me it's FFI. I like the game quite a lot and of course it began the series and established several motifs, but IMO it doesn't feature anything that stands out against other titles in comparison. Except Garland/Chaos and the original Four Fiends, those designs are just godly.
FinaL Fantasy IV, V and XII.
