Could be anything. Be it some simple menu option or the way the story is conducted! Have any fresh ideas?
I once thought of this cool game that advances in gameplay and graphics as you get further into the adventure. It starts out as a very basic ancient PC-type game, but by the end it looks and feels just as good as a modern day game.
Story wise, the only real way to pull it off would be to have a self aware sort of deal with a comedic edge.
What are your ideas?
There is that evolution game that people praised until it came out and was super generic and got a lot of flack for just being a gimmick. And then they tried to rectify it by releasing a new version with more fleshed out story or something. I haven't checked out either version, I just know their existence
For me, it was and has pretty much always been a good RPG that has a fighting game for the enemy encounter fights
Some notable games that almost got it were Xenogears, and Legend of Legaia. I -almost- got what I wanted with Tales of Xillia. The battle system in that game is so fast, and active, and insane, and all about quickly moving around in the fight and pulling off your moves. It's probably as close as I'll ever get. And even better that I loved the characters and the story was fairly unique and well done
But nobody has ever completely pulled it off. But I got my first taste with Soul Calibur 3 having a strategy game where encounters were just stage fights
This would be impossibe to pull off, but your party being imported characters from other games. Like you choose whoever you want and you get up to, I dunno, 10 characters, and you can pick 10 new ones next time and it can be ANY CHARACTERS and your game will make them react and speak accordingly
It will never never happen and I don't expect it to, but that's like my RPG fantasy
If there was an RPG Maker equivalent of the fighting game engine/maker MUGEN, there would be hundreds of these xD Though they'd probably all be like the bottom feeders of FanFiction.net lolQuote:

I knew about that, but when I thought of the idea it was before that existed. Plus, the way I imagine it is much larger in scope and would toy with advantages/disadvantages of using tropes from all eras of gaming, including future ones to even table top games.Quote:

I always wanted to see a game that looks like Amano's artwork. Not just Amano-inspired monster designs or portraits - I want the whole game to look like a flowy, Amano painting.

Too many to list. But right of the bat I think mixing Tales series characters and Final Fantasy characters would be great fun!
Basically take my list of top video game characters and throw them in together in all different combinations. Gosh I would replay that game so much. "How does this character get along with this one? How about these two or these three? Oh what would this party be like? WHAT IF THEY WERE ALL ARCHERS? ALL BLACK MAGES?"

It seems that most characters in video games are young, white and heterosexual.
Some variation would make things more interesting.
More positive black characters. Seriously, besides games where you create the protagonist (and can therefore make them BME) there are really not that many positive black characters, especially in RPGs. Like, what gives?
An RPG with branching paths where the MC is literally the insert player, as in they remember anything and everything you've seen across your playthroughs; and you get to act accordingly in any situation.
The ability to answer certain questions, instead of having the game answer them for you.

Procedurally generated stories seems like the next frontier for RPGs. I would like to see something like the later Elder Scrolls, where all the NPCs have routines and personalities, and everytime those interests conflict with eachother, they create a procedurally generated quest. Then that NPC's story continues to progress and the relationship with the player character evolves based on how the player interjects as the stakes continue to get higher and higher. Even wars would build up and play out a different way everytime. Most open world developers strive to create a "living, breathing" world and this seems like the next step for Bethesda's radial AI experiments.
While not nearly on the scale you're asking, Xenoblade Chronicles actually did something like this with their NPCs. Most of the games sidequests unlock by chatting with the NPCs and expanding their relationships with you and each other and many were branching with your choices changing some of the dynamics of the characters. Granted it was all scripted to work in a certain order but by mid-game you would find that each town had several stories and conflicts going on that doesn't necessarily tie with the main plot but built them into richer environments. The game even kept track of all the NPCs for you and their relationships.Quote:

I'm with Fynn on mature characters. I wouldn't be opposed to playing a grandpa character. But playing a character older than like 21 is extremely rare as it is. So even playing someone in their late 20s or early 30s would be a breath of fresh air
I honestly think it'd be really amusing if the town's blacksmith had to put his hammer to use saving the town or something. Even more interesting if they didn't have a more workable trade. Have an Inn keeper be the only towns person willing to venture out and save the country or something. It doesn't always have to be teenagers willing and eager to help

That sort of reminds me of how Luke Skywalker was originally written in the first draft of Star Wars. He was going to be as old as Obi-Wan and being a very seasoned veteran. Granted that film worked since it needed a young character full of questions as an audience surrogate.Quote:

Even a mature character doesn't have to be very worldly. I think it'd be endearing if an older character got drafted into a situation bigger than him, and had to leave his comfort zone, and sheltered life behind and set out and see and learn new things. Though it'd probably have to be written by someone more competent than the average RPG writers

Tales of Xillia had Rowen, who was a 60+ year old butler when he joined the team. Though he wasn't inexperienced, the events of the game took him by surprise just as much as anyone else. And he remains one of the shining beacons to me on this type of conversation. Proving that it is completely possible to pull off. I would have loved to play as Rowen as the protagonist if the story were written a little differently. Just that nobody wants to take that plunge

Personally, I'd love a gothic vampire hunter RPG set in the 1800s. Basically Castlevania, mixed with Final Fantasy. I'd also really like them to implement a tool system like Wild ARMs.
Adaptive plot.
I want a Final Fantasy - or even Bravely Default - where there are four fiends wreaking havoc on the four crystals, but it's more open-world and you can go to any of the four realms first. And whichever one you fight first is at level 10. Whichever one you fight second is at level 30. Then 60, then 99. But not only does the difficulty scale, the plot adjusts accordingly, where after you beat the first fiend, the three other fiends get together and...I don't know, do something to try to come after you. There could be optional triggered ambushes/assaults/battles based on where you go and when.
