Jinx Liveblogs Harry Potter [NOT BLIND, THIS IS LIKE MY 10K READ, LET'S DISCUSS]

So it's been about 5 years since I last read the series (which, holy trout, where has time gone?) and last time I Facebook liveblogged my thoughts as I was going, and people really seemed to enjoy it. I know there are a bunch of fans here, so it might be fun to have discussions. Or I can just post into the void; I've never needed an audience to put on a show.

I'm excited to see how I interpret and enjoy the series at 27 as opposed to 22. It's always fun going back to it because of how much my life might change in the time frame of reading it (although, when the books were still being released, I reread the series about 3 or 4 times a year).

Also, fun fact: the other night I was on Pottermore and got sorted in Hufflepuff. I've been sorted into both Slytherin and Hufflepuff equally over the years. And my Patronus was a badger, so like doublepuff. I'm embracing my Hufflepuff side these days, so I'll take. According to Our Lady of Wands, people like myself are Slytherpuffs and the rarest of house combinations. ;)

Always wanted to be Ravenclaw though...

I always thought of myself as either a Ravenclaw or a Slytherin. In the end I figured I belonged best in Slytherin after I took pleasure in telling wannabe Ravenclaws who brag about their intelligence that they're too dumb to be in Ravenclaw. You all know one, you know what I'm talking about!

Anyway I took Pottermore for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago and I got... Gryffindor. I've never been so ashamed! I also think it's the least likely of the four houses for me as I'm a total coward. Roller coasters? Bungee jumping? Skydiving? No, no and no!

I've always more seen it more a determination and ambition. Self-preservation and resourcefulness are also listed as traits of Slytherin too.

I think this all why people who are Slytherins are the most easily corrupted. There's nothing inherently wrong with being determined, ambitious, or resourceful. In fact, in the right context they're admirable qualities. But if your intentions aren't good, those traits can become nefarious.

Looking at the traits, being split between Hufflepuff and Slytherin doesn't seem all that weird. You can't have determination and ambition without being hardworking, and you both are extremely loyal friends.

Interestingly, Ravenclaws are the only house for whom some sort of loyalty to friends isn't mentioned as important. :lol:

I’d consider joining reading you, but I’m already going through some other series I’ve been wanting to read for a while, and I hate stopping in the middle of a series unless I have to. I have been wanting to read these again though.

I was sorted into ravenclaw back when Pottermore first became a thing. I might have to see if that still holds true.

Fun fact: I really wanted to dress up as the sorting hat somehow at work, and every time we got a customer with red hair I would say “Ah, another Weasley I see. Gryffindor!” My coworkers vetoed the idea. They’ve decided they would rather do a fairy tale themed Halloween.

I'm a Slytherin. I cheated to get sorted into Slytherin house and justified it by saying that was the type of thing a Slytherin would do anyway.

A couple things I picked up in high school I never shook off:


-Slytherins were the edge lords and romantics who just wanted the same house as Snape.
-I've found Gryffindors to be the odd man out. No one wants to be Gryffindor because they think everyone else is Gryffindor.
-Hufflepuffs are pretty good judge of character and if they think they should be in Hufflepuff they're probably right.
-People can come at me if they want but Ravenclaw is by far the most overrated house. Way, way too many people sort themselves into Ravenclaw because they "like to read" or they feel like "the smart friend".

It's just another case of hating what's popular once it gets popular--if you'd asked me when I was a kid, being sorted into anything but Gryffindor, ESPECIALLY SLYTHERIN, would have sucked majorly. And then the fandom became something crazy with the popularity of the internet skyrocketing, and it wasn't cool anymore. It's basically the HP version of "I've never seen a single episode of Game of Thrones, and I'm super duper proud of that!". For what it's worth--I feel like Gryffindor is still my least favorite house, but that's because the traits really just do not apply to me at all. Perhaps being bold; god knows I'm not afraid to pop off.
-I really love that Hufflepuff is getting more love since the series ended. They really do have the best traits and characteristics. Also I really just love the Pottermore crest for it and was super jelly when it came out because of how beautiful it was. Also, best name, fight me.
-The irony being that Ravenclaw isn't really about being smart, per se, but rather pursuing knowledge and learning just for the sake of curiosity and expanding their minds. Luna Lovegood is maybe not a genius, but she has a lot of ideas about the world and is very creative and I don't know. Like, the way to get into Ravenclaw tower is deliberating and answering a philosophical or complex question, and if someone doesn't know the answer, they have to wait until someone come by who does. I love the imagery that sometimes entire groups of people will be locked out until they can discuss ideas and learn together.

I still have that childlike pro-Gryffindor feel. I mean, I know what I said earlier in this thread (it's really because I don't think of myself as brave) but as I read sections like the Quidditch matches, House Cup, etc. I'm still rooting for Gryffindor and all my favourite characters are in that house. I think bravery, especially in the aforementioned Ned Stark context, is the most admirable trait of the houses. For me, Neville is the most admirable and likeable character in the whole damn series and it's that quiet determination to stand up for what's right, against all his considerable disadvantages, that inspires me to try to be braver than I am.

Also I really like your Ravenclaw interpretation.

I’m mostly indifferent about gryffindor. I always wanted to be in that house as a kid since the other houses didn’t seem as “cool” back then. I still root for them when I read the books just because that is the perspective we generally see, but even as a kid I always felt it a bit unfair how dumbledore liked to pull house points out of nowhere to have them just win the house cup. I always thought that despite being a great wizard, dumbledore was honestly a pretty terrible headmaster for a school.

Dumbledore is a pretty troutty human being all around, son. But that was a troutty thing to do to kids. ALSO IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE TO THE REST OF THE SCHOOL. UNLESS YOU TELL EVERYONE HE BATTLED OFF WITH VOLDEMORT IT WAS JUST TOMFOOLERY AND RULE BREAKING.

I will fight you to the death if you tell me Neville didn't deserve his 10 goddamn points, though.

I wanna say like three years ago, so a little while. Whenever the Cursed Child script book came out. Although just before I went up to Edinburgh I went to the HP studio tour, binged all the movies and went on a HP wiki spiral, so I'm not in poor condition.

Cursed Child came out in January (I think it was, def winter) of 2016, so 3 years would be about right.

I haven't even started my reread, yet, I've been too busy reading the FFVII comic we all loved in late 2012. I'll probably be done today, though.

Neville definitely deserved his points. I feel like he should have gotten more points.

Dumbledore may have done what he felt necessary for the good of the wizarding world or whatever, but doing his part to help save the world doesn’t really excuse all the crappy stuff he did. He is just painted in a favorable and heroic light do to his part in the story. It’s been too long since I’ve read the books to know for sure if I’d agree that he is a downright terrible person, but he at the very least should have been fired and probably been labeled a criminal for some of the stuff he did/allowed to happen at the school.

I agree on the Ravenclaw comments made and I say that as one of those a Ravenclaw.

I can't tell you how glad I am that she abandoned this style of writing almost immediately with the following book.

Ravenclaw here! I’m glad thats the House I got sorted to because blue is my favorite color :bigsmile:

Also, I think I’m the only person in existence who actually vastly prefers Gambon’s Dumbledore to Harris’s. And that’s both in the books and the movies. I know he’s the same throughout the books but maybe kinda summed it up nice that we get a different perspective on him after book 2. Give me those morally gray, complicated mentors, rather than an infallible beardy dude you can just fall back on because adults appear to be infallible when you’re eleven.

yeah I always get ravenclaw when I take tests. Which works out cause I love riddles and witty things make me chuckle and that's apparently what they're known for. And while I do find my self to be more courageous, not to the extent of Gryffindors. And While I find myself being a particularly good finder, not that good to be a hufflepuff.

Which comes to slytherin. I don't feel like I fit into it that well but I can be quite devious from time to time. Luckily Ravenclaw shares that with slytherin so that works out for me.

Is Gambon Dumbledore the " DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE 'ARRY ?" one ?

And I hate how people keep bringing it up that scene because that scene is interpreted differently, as it’s an adaptation not a 1 to 1 translation from book to screen and the book shouldn’t be treated like a script :stare:

I'm with Fynn, I prefer Gambon Dumbledore. Harris Dumbledore just lacked that little spark of life (oh god I'm so sorry) that sets him out from the crowd.

I think Harrisdore captured the whimsical side of Dumbledore better, and I think Gambondore captured the powerful side of Dumbledore better. I also think that probably if the man hadn't been dying from cancer, he would've been much more vibrant.

I think Harrisdore definitely looked more like the Dumbledore in my head, though.

I also think it's somewhat unfair to compare the two simply because we got 2 movies with Harris, and we got 6 with Gambon.

That's fair and I don't disagree with any of that. Say something controversial I can fight you over, like movie Ginny > book Ginny.
