Wouldn't that require a hack?
Some might think a quick reply box would encourage spam. Why? Well, if they took out post counts because of it, I wouldn't think that anyone would even think about getting a quick reply box.
I like the Quick Reply function. I have it on my board, and I don't think it increased spam (unless you mean that more posting is equivalent to more spam).
Hacks aren't bad if they're well designed, and I'm sure there's a really good/ well tested Quick Reply hack for vbb.
Quick Reply stuff scares me. I think that's just a personal thing. I have a severe phobia of them.
No, really.
I command everyone to start linking pictures from http://www.quickreply.com post articles from there, banners, limericks, whatever you can find, and message BoB with such things so I can see his reaction.Quote:

It's a pretty much unnecesary hack, and I still remember the days when Acmlm hacked the living excrement out of the board until Sean wiped everything clean and installed a no-hack vBulletin. Speed increased 100% overnight.
EoFF is fast enough for me, 'cause I'm on cable--but we also have to look out for the 56kers out there, and for that reason, I'm reluctant to hack the board without a significant gain from it.
As for promoting spam, I don't think it really would. Without the quick reply box, a reply is still only one more mouse-click away. If people are determined to spam, they'll take that click.
'cept Quick Reply doesn't require a hack; you can get away with merely a modification of the showthread template.
The only downside of this implementation is that it'll show up regardless of whether you're logged in, but it doesn't require a hack, so I likes it.

*cries* It's scarey! MAKE IT GO AWAY!
This is pretty much what it results in, BooB.
Sorry for the double-post, but this post was made with the above quick reply box. Yesh.
sfsdfasdf
EDIT: HOLY CRAP THATS FREAKING ME OUT. >_<:;;;;; *runs away crying*
I believe that was the intention. :hat:
This is only temporary, tho'. :p
*tries out the Quickreply-box*
EDIT
Seems to work. =O
EDIT II:
It's fun.
Now we only need Quickedit-boxes. :D
I don't think it would encourage that much spam, either, but seeing as post counts are disabled because they cause spam, I just thought everyone would think that Quick Reply would make it easier for everyone to spam...
I find it ugly and distracting and pointless on every MB I've seen it on.
UGLY. Yes.
I actually find quick reply useful, but that's just because my cable goes really slow.
If it were to be included, it'd have to bea lot smaller than that one there for aesthetic values. I happen to like the one on FFO and FFR...
This is pretty much what it results in, BooB.
EDIT: I hate Quick Reply. :aimwink:
I hate you, BOU.
:aimsad:
You edited your post but YOU LEFT THE INCORRECT SPELLING OF MY NAME. *irritating yahoo smilie cry thing*

This could actually make things better for the 56kers. Think about it: A couple of more lines HTML-code on the page-view-page, or to have to load the Reply-page thingie?
What would happen if we were to copy the quick reply code to our sig?:D
Unfortunately, it'd only work for a single thread, I think. Maybe I could start posting that box in every reply I make, tho'. Hm.
And I agree wholeheartedly with Nait.
As a part-time 56ker, I must say that I still think it's annoying. Yup.
I'm not sure if it's available for vbulletin, but the quick reply for wbb2 has an option in the user-cp to disable it if you wish.
It's not going to cause huge aesthetic problems either. It's only a small box at the bottom of the page - you don't even have to look at it unless you're going to use it!
*agrees with Nait*
I never really understood the need for a quick reply box. I mean, sure they can speed things up, but whenever I use one I am compelled to make a much shorter post for whatever reason...
That and the fact that you can't preview your post. (A godsend if you're using compicated tables... ugh)
However, I wouldn't be opposed to the addition of the boxes if I could turn them off.
(Perhaps a javascript pop-up?)
I'm on 56k, and it is much faster to load one page and be able to post from it, then load up the thread, and the post page, and then post... it takes too long.
This is pretty much what it results in, BooB.

 grr
Okay, since it's not a hack, it doesn't have to be re-installed every board upgrade (templates usually aren't dumped in an upgrade), and it won't slow the board down, therefore I'm not opposed.
Here's how I see it:
PROS:
-Saves loading a page for 56k'ers
-Makes it easier to reply
-Doesn't require a hack
-It's easy enough to install that any admin could manage it.
CONS:
-BOU hates it
-Shlup hates it
-Unne thinks it's ugly
-It shows whether you're logged in or not
-If we were to install it, we'd be doing what Aaron wants :p
End result: I'm not really for it, but I'm not against it, either. I don't think it would hurt anything, although I don't think it would really help, either.
What say we take this to a vote in Staff? All these yesses and nos mixed into a single thread are making me wonder what my orders are..
Ask Sean to say no :D
*adds his name to the BOU/Shlup/Unne list*
EDIT: Staff vote sounds okay.
EDIT AGAIN: I really, really, really hate it.
Alright. I'll go make the thread now. Actually, I'm going to come off the fence and support it, even.
You put each staff member who was against it as a con, but you didn't put anyone who's for it as a pro. :p
In my experience quick replies are rarely ever the best.
Too bad. It has been done! Taa daa!
I'm glad you made it optional. It's definitely ugly.
Giving it its own template was Prot's genius idea.
But I did spend several extra minutes trying to make it pretty. :(
*hugs Mandee* He doesn't MEAN to hurt your feelings. That's just his way.
Lovley. *doesn't use it* :p
The Council is pleased, Amanda. You may expect a... Bonus, soon.
You did better than I would have, lass.Quote:

Maybe you guys should put a flower next to it, or something. Or a whole frame of flowers! =D
*still hates it anyway, but likes the compromise*
That's for when BOU adds it to Ed's technicolor nightmare ;)Quote:

Ugly, but strangely beau... nope, it's ugly!
I like it though. Thanks a lot, staff people. :)
Yarrr, I've got customers. Call me back, Ishmael. [/Captain McCallister]
Aaaaaaanyway, I love it. And the idea of using a separate template was, indeed, a stroke of genius - that way there's no way guests can see it and get all confused. ;)
I don't think anyone has ever called pr00t a genius before. Ever :p
Shlup said it before I did ;)Quote:

And he didn't call Proto a genius, only the stroke he used was that of a genius. ;)
Nait, that realisation is a stroke of genius.
Ha. You non-genius.
I'm using the quick reply now, in a stroke of genius.
We should start using "in a stroke of genius" everywhere on the forums, just randomly, for no reason. Seriously.
But what about a stroke of genus? You know how those biological classifications can get out of hand...
Oh, and back to the point, I'll still use the old reply page. (I likes the vB code buttons)
I know all the vB codes by heart (and rarely use 'em, since I vastly prefer using actual HTML for most of the tags), so they're all useless to moi. Sometimes I'll still use the normal reply page, probably, in the event that I forget a smiley code or need to attach a file, but that's all. (I tried including the attachment code dealie on my server, and the file wound up not attaching, although more likely that's due to the simple fact that Yahoo's hosting blows than it's due to something... else. If one of the admins wants to test it out, lemme know and I'll find the attachment-inducing code).
DAMN IT! Now I have to decide between cool colors and saving time! DAMN IT! This is so useful but the other colors :( I will just have to decide.
Don't worry, ed.
EDIT: I have the Quick Reply on right now, But I find it hard to not click on the reply button anyway. I don't go to any other boards that use quick reply, I think.

edczxcvbnm may now use his theme with the benefit of quick reply. :aimsun:
BOU, do you realize this means that *every* modification to the templates will now have to be done in quadruplicate? Including the twenty-three new templates that have to be added for that infernal arcade?
You really have it in for me, don't you? *cry*
Ack! 23 templates? C'mon now, you should know better than to implement that.
23 templates x 4 styles = 92 templates.
And I have my orders.
Well, at least delegate some of the work to the people who backed the idea up... that'll teach 'em. :P
Nah, I'm the tech guy. It's my job. I just want to whine about it some, 'cause I'm all frustrated from this afternoon's wrestling with FTP.
