How does one know what a good race/character matchup is? Are there the best ones of each type of character/race?(ie: squirrel race/best nut finder)
If so.. or even if not, what race would be recommended for Red Mage and what 2ndary job? And is monk good with elvaan?
Hume-Average(good for RDM some say)
Tarutaru-High INT, Low STR(Good for mages)
Elvaan-High MND/STR, Low INT(Good dmg dealer)
Mithra-High AGL/DEX, Low DEF (Good THF/indirect dmg dealing)
Galka-High HP/STR, Low INT/MND/MP(Good tanker/dmg dealer)
Monk is good with elvaan.
Recommended Race for RDM-Hume, Taru, and Mithra
Recommended sub- White Mage
Whats a recommended race/class anyways? I am not as fond of range/magic as I am melee, but I also want a melee who can take a good amount of dmg, while dealing more than he takes.
Also, if I get a rdmg and put him as my sub-char, I don't get convert right? Thats the reason i'm changing my mind about him..
I heard dark knights are really good attackwise, but get hit a lot, in ratio to other classes/races, by how much is their defense less? Another one of my thoughts were to become a dragoon, but I heard they were common, and way overused.. so maybe not good in parties..
If you were too lazy to read the above, mainly my question is, what class/subclass/race should I be?(noob, enjoys melee and some skills)
Try WAR and be a tanker, or try THF for later on to do massive dmg with Weapon Skills, or try Samurai to do Weapon Skills frequently, or...maybe Monk with good reg dmg, or ninja with two weapons to attk, or a RDM with decent attk and magic. Its really all up to you....
And no u cant convert if u sub RDM cuz of lvl cap.
Okay, I think I've decided WHM/BLM, but I'm not sure how fun it will be. I asked a few of my already playing friends, they said all you do is heal in PT, other than that you can't really kill stuff.. does anyone know really how much fun these guys are to play?
I'm planning WHM/BLM taru.. and if i don't like it I don't wanna pay an extra $1/mo for another char -_-
you can always change classes in Mog House....yer not required to stick to yer first choice...one character is like many in one only difference is you can't change race

well, I wonder if my matchup would be good in terms of stats....
anyways, i'm probably gona be a hume THF/WAR (playing as a thief should help myself finacially while playing a WAR would help with the skill thingies for sword stats) until i get to advanced jobs, then gona be DAR(or PAD)/NIN for the duo weapons ability, wat you ppl think??? good matchup or bad idea? guess i'm going for PAD if they can use healing magic, but if they can't i'll probably pick DAR over PAD......
i mean, think about it. A NIN should have good evasion and speed stats, PAD should give the character good defense, and my attack power's covered with the duo weaponary. Wonder if that'll work
Healing is very hetic and fun, try it, i love it at later lvls.I find melee very boring instead as u can fight and just leave it there til the thing dies..the WHM is the most active person in any party as they are the life of it.
THF/WAR is soso since if u have WAR you can tank tho you shouldnt. But you will be required to be the meatshield if there are no tankers availble.
DRK/NIN sucks since DRK can only use two handed stuff and you cant equip that on both hands that the NIN can allow you to. PLD/NIN is also stupid since ur attk isnt that high and your just there to tank, and if u dont sub WAR to PLD, ur useless in a party and will be passed up.
PLD can heal, but its not that great as WHM or RDM and its not in their real interest to heal.
Always put in the party factor, partying is key in FFXI and from what i see it all you think about is the solo char, it doesnt matter if u dont have high DEF for a BLM cuz in a party the WAR tanker is suppose to get it off you. Party effectiveness ppl.
so, lion, are you saying Taru WHM/BLM would be a good choice for a beginner? It does require alot of interaction, like you said, then will I do a good job?
Also, doesn't it seem a bit cheap, my friend is being RDM and it sounds to me like RDM have the works of being a great class, and seem practically invincible, especially with convert.. what is different from WHM or BLM compared to RDM, except that WHM/BLM have less life and less survivability?
Lets say WHMs get the most stress(and i mean fun in this sense) than other classes i fooled with. You will always be active in a battle unlike a black mage where u can sit back and occasionally cast a spell that may or may not turn the tide greatly. BLM=Lazy job to me XD
Well a RDM doesnt have alot of mp, so you cant heal urself over and over also with convert, there is prolly a time limit for each use like 5 minutes so you wont be invincible. Otherwise everyone would do that, and i dont see my lvl 40 RDM friend do that every so often as converting can equal death if the party doesnt heal him.
RDMs dont have status spells to help themselves if they are poisoned or blinded or anything of that sort, cannot fix that status. Also all area spells like Curaga(heal everyone around u in party) and Protectra(casts protect in party around you) as the WHM does. Therefore teh WHM is very helpful with these situations and in the end the RDM's power lies in magic and you will be mostly a support healer than much anything else. ALTHOUGH your unique spells will guarantee that the party will have an easier time lvling with Refresh and stuff. Tho its expensve.
And their nuking powers and spell selections are limited as well. You get Raise at lvl 25 for whm but you u dont get it til lvl 34, just like how Water for BLM is lvl 6 and for you its 9, and by then the BLM get Aero with more power than Water. Also mages are expensive as you must always update ur spell liabrary where usually the money spent there would be spent on new armor for the meleers.
But dont underestimate teh RDM especially if its the main job, later on their skills matter, but generally a WHM is looked for more.
WHM/BLM is what i did and i love it, also being a Taru will make your life easier by ten times or more especially if ur White or Black Mage, cuz u dont need to rest every few minutes and can last a few tough battles with enough mp for one more skirmish.

I thought that DAR can use normal swords So that's why i wanted to put that with NIN to equip both hands. Oh well, guess i was wrong :o
My style in combat hasn't neceassary always been magic, and i thought PAD been able to use recovery magic could save me a few potions here and there.
So anyone got any suggestions for a character that ::specialises:: in melee? anyone ?

If ur lazy do blm, if ur very active try white, i just choose white cuz i like to help ppl. And i am glad i got the most important role in parties.
Sure you can solo around lvl 1-10 easy, but soon you wont be able to get decent exp and you will be forced to party to get exp. It doesnt have to be someone you know, form new bonds and just join any party. ITs reletively easy to usually.Quote:

PLD can heal, but in the long run your mp and heals wont be enough, you will need a full white mage to heal you or RDM at the least. The key to the game and the emphasis is teamwork, without it you dont go anywhere and you might even lvl down due to too much dying. And if you solo later on even on easy prey monsters, you CAN die badly because their life doesnt go down fast enough. I barely lived too and i am a whm with full mp, without it i would have been killed badly. Now imagine healing and the power of a WAR (the one in ur party), thats how we can live.Quote:

Potions are like 1K per bottle and they heal like 70? Its not worth it, no one really buys em unless you make em for yourself. Because with potions whats the point of healing classes? Nothing. All MMORPGs(cept RO) are like this.

Paladin-ULTIMATE Tanker, so sub WAR to provoke
Dark Knight-Each hit with weapon does alot of damage, but hits slower than most classes by a bit because of their heavy weapons. Stronger than monk per hit
Samurai-TP builder, you can use your weapon skill attks more often. Renkeing is great with SAM
Theif-Hits a bit faster than other classes, their Weapon Skills really hurt alot later on.
Ninja-Two weapons, what else can i say?
Monk-Later on your regular hits will be quite powerful so each punch will be damaging
Dragoon-Their jump and special spear skills are good
Warrior-Typical Tanker, can equip most any weapon, strong if subbed with most weapon oriented class.
Red Mage-Even though its not their main strength, they can use spells to power their weapons for extra elemental damage

Oh screw it, I'll just go with my old combo, the THF/MNK. What are some points abou this combo? Like battle style? I want to be involved, more than the BLM, and stuff... so yeah, help out man!
Well monk sub will give you more hp and you can use a few extra abilities. Its not bad but lets just say its better than the other way around for some XD.
For THF/MNK you will be using Sneak Attack for more damage, add it with Focus to increase accuracy, and Dodge to increase ur already insane evasion. Then use Boost so your first attk will do alot of damage, then strike him hard. Done right and you can be a powerhouse for the most part. Also you will be renkeing with other meleers(or me...i like to whack stuff and i occasionally whack stuff with my staff). Its a pretty solid combo IMO, any other beta testers i would value your opinion too.
So lion, what should i do?? WHM/BLM or RDM/??

WHM/BLM sounds good...and RDM is a good job...its really all up to you i like to discuss what jobs are good and all but ultimately, you should choose your job that fits your playing style the best.
playing style....... no warrior class that's good a dodging while still using a sword or the like?
so letme get this straight, paladin is a destined meatshield for the group, and dark knights has so low defence its not funny, not to mention their speed is bad as well.
so there isn't really a 'fun' melee job class out there somewhere. I mean, warriors are common judging how everyone's going for it. Monk's not really my thing so yea that's out..
hehe sorry for been picky, but like Rizzice said, i rather get my character job right the first time.
Eh you can try THF...fun is whatever you are good and can do best and enjoy most of. Fun is a very vague and subjective term so u might wanna clarify. Every class can be fun, but you just have to find the one that fits you best in parties.
I'm also doing a Taru Taru white mage, black mage combo. I'm just debating the order. Do I want to be mostly a black mage, with some respectable healing ability, or mostly a white mage, who can also deal modest damage. My experience from prior FF's is that lower level healing spells are more valuable on their own than lower level attack spells, so I'm leaning towards my final character being Black with a White sub. I dunno, really.

Hey all, got a question... I hear all this talk about WHM and RDM and PLD and WAR and so on... what do you all think about a Hume theif, then bard at 30? I'm liking the bard for group play and I think a theif would be a great start to the game... what do you guys think?
Group play is mandatory at lvl 10-12 and beyond, so dont think that would work else u have to spend lots of time lvling a right sub
THF would be good with NIN and maybe SAM for TP boosts, but wont work at all with BRD. Not to mention THFs are one of the toughest to lvl up since you dont do extremely lot of dmg before lvl 15's Sneak Attack and therefore wont be invited to many parties and have trouble with solo play. THFs are WICKED later on, but for early play its hard. :D
BRD/WHM is the only real way to play it the most effectively. You also have to move around alot choosing the right songs to sing and also recast them when the one or two minute effects of the song is up, not to mention support with heals, you are there to support, nothing else.
Yeah, just figured this one out. I didnt realize bards are strictly for support in FFXI. What would you reccomend starting as if i were to become a SAM or a DRG? those jobs sound very interesting. thx
A Warrior and maybe THF can do well with SAM and DRG.

Allright how about starting out with a black mage then for sub class what ever would be good but i don't really like WHM so idk something good. After would it be good to have a DRK/SAM? And would it be possible to make my BM look like Vivi or just a simple realy BM meaning black head and yellow eyes?
And would all this be better for a hume or tauru tauru?
WHM is a very important sub class for any mage, if not the best. But if you hate it that much you can always get /RDM
/WHM: Status cure aliment spells(poison sucks at low lvls, and at higher lvls, mobs will throw alot at you, having this helps make things easier and party death or not), Curaga(like another benediction, saves major ), Teleport spells, ReRaise(Raises urself if you die), Party buffs(Protectra and Shellra series, instead of wasting MP to cast it on individual people, with the same MP cost you can cast it on the entire party), Divine Seal (job ability that helps keep the party alive with next cure spell multiplied effectiveness by 2) and more Magic Def Up (theres two, and its passive). Plus healing is what you do in tough situations, a BLM/WHM is a lifesaver. AND you get CureII 6 lvls before a /RDM, bascially all your cure spells are going to be gotten earlier and that makes a safer pt. (BLM/WHM: lvl 22 u get cureII because WHM gets the spell at lvl 11; BLM/RDM: lvl 28 tou get cureII because RDMs get the spell at lvl 14).
/RDM: You get Fast Cast(dont matter too much, since casting spells after spell all the time makes the moster urber pissed at you and therefore you getting hit or dying. Those that do it is prolly best to get hit more and die so they know not to do it again, screws up hate), Gravity(lowers evasion and makes enemy walk slower, great for running away), self buff spells(not party), a magic def and attk up(one each), and...thats it =/
You can try /SMN for more MP but thats all you get, the ultility and potential for /WHM and /RDM is higher and better than /SMN.
Taru is best for mage, but DRK is best for other races.
DRK/SAM is good too btw and theres no way to make you have that two yellow dots on your eyes. Closest you get is AF armour which looks like this:

I think I'm going to go with BM/WHM. Since mages don't have that much life I will need to heal myself. And I also think I will take a hume b/c i really like the combanation but by the waywould you know how to get a Samurai?

Remember, you need to do the subjob quest at level 18 to be able to get the combonation. I started out as MNK and I am working to the next level so I can get the subjob quest done, and I dislike MNK now (as a Tarutaru) so I am going to mage classes.
What I am saying is, you will eventually change your mind because even reading up about it on websites, doesn't cut the cheese to the real thing.
Just an insite though.
