Who loves 8-bit theatre?

This little off-tangent is okay. I'm not going to tell the author what he should do (making each episode of a 67-episode-long comic hysterical is impressive), but I like the characters a lot and really can't wait until they get outside of Corneria (and possibly meet Black Belt and White Mage again). I don't mind off-tangents, and I think I'll like this as long as it doesn't go on for too long.
Oh, and Bahamut2000X, concerning Black Mage hitting on Lich: even despite the gender argument, there is the slight matter of Lich being undead. Granted, I SUPPOSE Black Mage might think that way, but.... :whoa:

I never thought i'd say this, but that was one stupid episode of 8-Bit theater. One of the worst. Of course, the author probaly purposly made it bad to further advance the stupidity of Fighter...

Chill out, yo! It's only a comic, they can have off tangent episodes all day if they wanted to =o

Yeah, I know. 1 bad comic as oppose to the 60-something great ones isn't going to make me stop loving 8-Bit Theater. All im saying is that one was bad. Im not mad at them or anything.

You know, Fighter was funny and cool when he was just slow. Now that he's a cliched idiot he's just annoying. I'm starting to lose my love of this comic since the characters are just stereotypes (And not good ones) now.

I found that rather amusing. I'd have liked it better without the horrible grammar though. It'll get better again, I'm sure, once things are back to normal.

Am I glad I finally decided to come down to the FF1 forum to check this out! This series just rocks. Although, it was really good at the beginning when it was just Fighter and Black Mage, at the time when Fighter didn't seem to be much of an idiot.

Now that Fighter's in charge...yessh, it's all weird...the first actual interlude episode was kinda...eh. More showing of how dumb Fighter is than anything else. Hopefully, it'll be back to the good ol's day of BM in no time...

The concluding interlude episode will be posted on this Saturday, which I think is a good thing.

Interlude00 was only mildly funny. Interlude01 had no laughs at all. So... the Fighter is dumb and can't make a polished comic. It's sad that a comic strip takes a whole week to examine a character, only to make him increasingly one-dimensional.

LoL, the characters aren't as set as they used to be. Like, first, no one cared Fighter was dumb and they all hated Black Mage, now they all hate Fighter. And in the comic, Fighter seems all nice, and now he's a jerk since he's running things. The only one who's the same is Red Mage, since he doesn't really have a personality, unless 'obssessed' is one.

True. You'd think that Black Mage would be the one who would want to take over the site and make fun of the author, but it's Fighter. Why does he keep making fun of Black Mage? I thought he thought Black Mage was his friend. I liked Fighter better when he had the "Dumb but Lovable" personality; now he is just dumb. Hopefully he will return to his normal self after the interlude.

One thing I've never understood: Why are Theif and Red Mage constandly taking second hand in role? It's basicly just Fighter and Black Mage with the other two filling in a much lesser role. I mean, Theif is suppose to be the leader of the team and Red Mage is suppose to be the smart guy of the team and they barely speak. I sometimes forget that they are there. Thief and RM are usually just talking to eachother, but recently they've been saying alot more.(Like, they talked alot during the castle sequence, and also later during the spider thing)

On topic. Yes. I never liked Red Mage. I'd have been happy if Brian had kept it to only Black Mage and Fighter. The beginning was much better, I agree with whoever said that above. It's too showy now. Or something.

I kinda like the interlude myself. It's not as good as the main comic so far, but it's by no means bad. The behind the scenes episode was creative. I didn't like the newest robot one very much. Still, even at it's worst, it's a million times better than anything else out there. As far as what people have been saying about characterizations, I agree. In the beginning, B.Mage was evil, and fighter was dumb. We knew that, as he got the point across with a little subtlety. I'll admit, I've never really liked the thief or red mage yet. The thief is more of a used car salesman than a stealthy mysterious character he could have been. And red mage just annoys me. Still, I hate complaining since I couldn't do any better. Yeah, I think "too showy" is how I'd describe it too.

You know, the best part of this series is going to be MUCH later when the stat-obssesed Red Mage begins to fall behind EVERYONE else, just like in the game. I can't wait to see what happens on that.

You're right. It's not. I've just checked my FF1 save state. My Knight had 24 INT and my Master had 35.

Think about it anyway, the Black Belt would NEED a lot of intelligence to, well, be a Black Belt. Surely he does more damage later on because he knows how to hit faster and where to hit -doesn't THAT require a particularly high intelligence?

The Fighter just strikes an idea of "see enemy, bash enemy with sword. If enemy is dead look for another enemy. If enemy is not dead, bash with sword again" -where's the intelligence with that?!?

I just wonder if we'll see more of White Mage at some point... well, other than in BM's twisted dreams, that is. I liked her character, and wouldn't mind seeing an occasional cameo from her - and from BB as well. But I think at this point it the comic would be better served to move the plotline along with just the 4, and get to the confrontation with Garland. THAT is going to be a riot.

I hadn't thought about that. I hope Garland lives. He's a good character and could be built up to much more. If Garland gets killed off then Brian is wasting a good opportunity IMO.

I agree with the idea of sticking to the main 4 though. I'd like to see Red Mage get a little more developed, now Thief has. Plus Red Mage could be developed into a pretty cool character as well. But hey, I'm into statistics, so that's just me.

I seem to side more with Dr. Disco on this one. It is only a comic, and the comic is staying essentially true to the game. I think it's neat that the creator (you named him! Sacrilege! :D ) is taking liberties, but not overdoing it.
In any case, I really have not been responding to this thread because I realize that I could produce, maybe, one funny comic each month, and as far as I'm concerned, he has 89 hysterical ones in a row. I'm not going to tell him how to write his own comic.

Finnally its going somwere, i was somwhat dismayed at brians tantrum on the audiance when he wrote about a "moron" he later edited it to a toned down version but those who saw it before that saw his side wich was pretty childish and doesent leave a good impression with comments such as "I made this site for 4 people, and if you others dont like it fine if i lose half my audiance because you think im an asswhole then its your loss" ect but other than that i really enjoy the comic =) and cant wait to see garland in a brawl.

Red Mage...

His "tantrum" as you called it, I thought was justified. When he went back and toned it down I was kind of disappointed.

It's like this... he's providing this comic for free... in his spare time... to anyone that wants to see it.

Then this guy e-mails him... tells him he doesn't update enough, gets on his case about how he doesn't like the characters, and then tells him how to manage it.. "wouldn't it make more sense to work on the comic whenever you have free time... rather than the night before?" (this quote is from memory... so it's probably not accurate :P ). It's more like polite hate mail to me. I would've reacted the same way.

And like Brian said... if that guy doesn't like the comic... he doesn't have to read it.

Anyway, critisism is one thing... but that e-mail was extreme. That guy had what was coming to him.

About the Red Mage being down to -10 HP. That would be funny as heck. The only character that can cast LIFE is dead. A White Mage/Black Belt cameo looms...

Then White mage saves red mage and she leaves and the plot continues with red mage still in party, and rightfully so! that episode were rm says "HE'S LOWERD MY INT SCORE BY JUST BEING NEAR ME" had me in fits best one yet i believe or grants ear i just dont know :D

I didn't really get the Dark Warriors thing the first time I read it. But I think I know what you're saying. The Dark Warriors are supposed to be evil, but not as evil as Chaos is. The reason they help people? Money, baby.

Well, no one can be funny ALL the time, give poor Brian a break. At least - unlike some "real" comic strips out there - Wizard of Id, Cathy, Marmaduke, et al - 8 Bit-Theater is actually funny on a regular basis! And usually, if a comic is so-so one day, the next one more than makes up for it - at least that's been my experience.

But I guess I'm just used to high standards from 8BT, and for once in a while it just didn't deliver. I'm sure it'll get better next "issue".

Well it didnt, "i guess black mage has a point" episode bored me senseless, he is losing his edge for like the past 4 comics

This is my first post to this thread. I just found 8-bit Theater. It's histerical. Personally, I think they should have kept White Mage around rather than Red Mage, but thats just me. Fighter/Thief/White Mage/Black Mage is my favorite party. But Red Mage is kinda funny.

As for the most recent comics, its so funny how they just left Red Mage lay there suffering from the Werewolf wounds. And Garland is such a wussy enemy I can't stop laughing at him. I can't wait till they actually have to fight him.

Eagle: good call. Bob and George is also quite hilarious. (it's at http://www.bobandgeorge.com if you wanna go check it out). I'm surprised that Red Mage didn't have a HEAL Potion tucked in his Twink Utility Belt! That would have saved his bacon...

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole Red Mage injury is a ploy by the author to get the White Mage into the party. Plus it's almost up to the fabled 100th comic to BTW.

First of all, they're not ALL supposed to be funny. It's clear that Brian is building a story here (a very long story since they haven't even gotten to garland yet, but that's another discussion altogether). So sometimes a comic or two has to be sacrificed for the sake of moving the story along or setting up a joke later on. Secondly, the ones that are supposed to be funny won't be hilarious to everyone every time.

Besides, like I always say, don't criticize unless you can show that you can do better. Brian has produced nearly 100 pages of comics that range from hilarious (black mage's pie woman dream) to distubing (black mage brutally murdering those guards) to fascinating (black mage's "true face", those dream sequences). This guy clearly knows what he's doing. Don't criticize him for doing more than "I like swords" in every issue.

But that's just me.

Reading this over, I think I come across meaner than I meant to and I apologize ahead of time :D I guess the point is: Brian has said that his 8-Bit Theatre isn't 'just another webcomic'. I for one am definitely seeing, to put it lightly, hints that this is the case. Let's just sit back and see where he takes us. If the last 90-something installments are any indication, then I cannot wait to see what the next 90, or 900 will have in store.

I sent Brian an e-mail telling him to check this thread out... wouldn't it be nice if he actually did and posted some kind of reply? Well, one can hope...

Demento's got a point. I think we're being too analytical. If you go in expecting rip-roaring, side-splittingly funny comics EVERY TIME, well, guess what? You're going to be very disappointed.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, can be hilarious, without fail, every time. I don't care if you're Brian Clevenger or Jerry Seinfeld, it is just not going to happen.

On another note, has anyone noticed that the monsters are all smarter than the "light warriors"? That kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Wich i fail to see how it moves the story along or set up a joke, the next comic is basicly unrelated and episode 91 could've been deleted and no one would know because of it just being a stall episode. There are other episodes like that such as the garland-chaos dream wich was dreadfull.

What im saying is that i can still read early episodes and laugh, they were original and the jokes well made, I have a complete right to say that brian is losing his edge in some comics wether i could do better or not, its my opinion and im trying to express that dont we all want comics of the quality that brian made frequently before or poor episodes wich basicly make you think "i waited 5 days for that.
I wait 5 days because im a great fan of 8-bit theater and think its a great sadness that (in my opinion) the auther can do a whole lot better, as weve seen proof.

On a diffrent note, thursdays comic made me laugh, and it made me feel better that if he put that effort into other recent comics id be reading 8-bit for a long more time to come.

I personally think that Episode 91, WordBearer, was a development of Red Mage's "twink" character not being quite as invincible as he thought he was, and how the other warriors are beginning to lose respect for him. So, no, I disagree with saying that it didn't have a development point.

Umm, how was Ep091 unrelated to the next one? The whole basis was that they were trying to say something clever about beating the werewolves, and then the werewolves got into an argument, and that's practiocally what saves them. And if you don't like it, I think you can safely assume Brian doesn't give a rat's ass.

I agree that the comic is not as good as it was when it started. I know that the creator of the comic might not value my opinion, but I didn't post it as a suggestion of change, simply as fact.
I like Thief much more after that dream. Instead of being a goofy, laughter-inspiring character, he is a semi-serious flawed character, which is a good asset to the story(which I believe will stagnate if it relies completely on character humor).
(Off topic slightly): I never have understood people's objections to flaming. I have never found it unpleasant to read (often it has been more entertaining than the threads it inhabits), and while it may be off topic, I think that some off topic discussion is necessary in pretty much every BBS thread to keep it lively and evolving.

Even if you think the quality hasn't been as high lately (though i'd say it has, but that's just me :)), you've got to admit that was a great comic.

Seeing Black Belt dive headfirst into a mass of tentacles WAS quite amusing! You don't see THAT very often.
I'm also going to have to give props to the COMPLETELY unflappable White Mage... I mean, NOTHING bothers this girl. Monsters, Black Mage's come-ons, rejection from the party, Black Belt's sillyness; none of it bothers her one bit, she just keeps on keepin' on...

P.S. I like how he's been subtly ripping sprites from FF3, hoping that we won't notice. But I'm on to him, I say! The gig is up!

Subtly? White Mage, the Crinos, almost all the ppl in line for the Light Warrior auditions, Garland and Sara, and the little kid BM scarred for life are all FFIIIj sprites. LoL

I agree about what Brian said in the last update though. He should take a week off. How much time does he spend voluntarily a week? It's not as if he gets much help with it either, and by the look of what he's been posting recently (not enough sleep, more stress etc.) he needs the extra time to get things back to normal.

Yeah, a week off couldn't hurt at all. Maybe he could post some fan comics or fan art in the meantime. Or do Mage Comics like those Fighter Comics.

But those might be too freaky for mortal eyes to gaze upon... kinda like Black Mage himself. :D

I agree completely. It wasn't even funny, and it won't be funny if he continues with this "BB is gay" thing. Hopefully he's going to drop it.

I just hope he'll make it look like BB is paranoid. If he makes him out to be gay then I'm one of the probably many people who'll stop watching 8-Bit Theater.

It's not all bad though, at least it meant that BB beat the large tentacle monster...

Hehe, Black Belt is gay. But it isn't hard to beat Kraken, a one-eyed squirrel armed with wet spaghetti could do it.

I find it pretty hilarious that BB's either paranoid/gay. Either way, it'll be funny.(Hmm, is Dr. Unne really Brian?:D)

And yeah, I'm sure 1,000's upon 1,000's will just close 8-Bit Theatre immediately and never read it again, all because of gay jokes.
