Quote tags

I like the phpBB-style quote-in-a-box. Anyone else like it? I like it better than those ugly hr tags the normal quote uses. Example:

Yes, I like the nested boxes if it will keep track of previous quotes. Right now if I quote someone that's quoted someone else, I only get the second quote, and not the original quote as well. But then againI don't know if that's something that the boxed quoting can fix or even if it's operator failure.

Right now you can use the [qq=Chester]blah[/qq] tag to do the new quote boxes. If people really hate the quote boxes then I can leave it as an optional tag and leave the default as the sucky two-hr-tag quotes. I don't want to scare Leeza away.

Which appear in all options you can set, such as when posting, in your user profile, etc. etc, as well as other places such as grouping attachments in posts.

They originally looked like this in vB3, boxing every single set of options, one box per where you now see just the one line with the text centred through it as above :p

Which is messy, once you have like 10 boxes stacked on top of each other, like you get in your user CP pages :p I think it's fine for the odd quote box though, since they don't all get clumped together everywhere :p

I think the lines should be dark like the quote lines we have now. Other than that, I still think the boxes are ugly in general, but maybe I just need to get used to it.

I just saw someone try to use qq without the username parameter, so I added a plain old [qq] tag now.

Why wouldn't you want that many quotes? I know I do. It made me complete, whole, and happy.

Someone who has IE can go ahead and try to make the tag look right in IE / look better in Firefox. I'm not booting into Windows again to do it.

The boxes aren't ugly, at least compared to some other MB's, but they just need some getting used to.

BoB, your first test is something that is unique to EoFF, from what I've seen around other boards, and it made EoFF stand out above the rest. The new boxes aren't too bad, but I really don't like to see them when they're nested one inside the other. That is very messy.

The default QUOTE tag does this now too. It looked terrible with the two kinds of quotes mixed together. We'll see. Not hard to put it back the way it was if I have to.

I keep my brightness down so it just looks like centered text to me. It's supposed to be a solid box background, right? I can barely see it with the brighness all the way up. I think our alternating background colors are too similar to use this format. It's still better than the box, though.

I think I could get them to alternate when nested, but it would be painful. I did it using CSS, to begin with.

Forget that. We'd just ruin it by nest qq with q and qqq and q^4 tags.

Are the new quote tags supposed to be black? Because on my screen, they're black. And it's horrible to look at. God-awful, even. And alternating them is also a stupid idea. We need to decide - one or the other. No "oh, a bit of this and a bit of that" - be consistent.

I think you need a new screen for your work computer because it seems to have it's own colours apart from all the others. :)

I agree that we should be consistent and I think these look pretty good.

You people need to turn up your contrast.

Having them alternate inside the quote boxes would be nice too, but I guess if it's a huge problem you could just use a different kind of border for the quote boxes, like:

You probably oughta read our FAQ for some entertainment that doesn't suck. If you haven't registered, you'll probably want to do that so you can, ya know, post. To start viewing threads, click on a forum, look at some threads, and have some sex fun.

Also, the way you guys are defining the quote boxes seems a bit unsound, you could just use:

.alt1 .quote {border: #000000 1px solid; padding: 4px; background: #012033; font: 13px "Verdana", "Arial", sans-serif; color: #FFFFFF;}
.alt2 .quote {border: #000000 1px solid; padding: 4px; background: #002942; font: 13px "Verdana", "Arial", sans-serif; color: #FFFFFF;}
.prequote {padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 4px; font: 11px "Tahoma", "Arial", sans-serif; color: #FFFFFF;}

Then just use as the quote tag:

And for the custom quote tag:

Putting a "Quote:" message before people's quotes seems to me unnecessary and a waste of space. It's obvious that it's a quote, why else is it blocked out like that? xD

Also, having quotes with 12px text when the rest of the post is 13px text looks bad to me. If you really want it to look different from everything else, use something like 11px Tahoma or something.

I like the black line around the box better than the blue line. Less messy.

They're staying like this until I get a good reason to change them. "I don't like your CSS" and "My monitor sucks" aren't good reasons. Feel free to come up with others.

That's the thing. The blue line in the quotes looks out of place with the rest of EoFF and if you add it everywhere else to fit in, then all of EoFF changes and that's not a good thing because EoFF looks just fine the way it is now.

Yeah, your screen definitely has problems - they're currently using the same blues as normal posts, so unless one of the normal alternating post colours is black to you as well, you need to be fixing something at your end :p

Also, the CSS does need fixing to something similar to as The Man suggested, since some of the quote boxes are currently the wrong colour on the Add Reply page. Might be a side effect of posts not alternating colours correctly there, but at least fixing the quote box CSS will make them the right colour regardless of where they are then :p

That might actually be a problem with the Add Reply page. xD

Umm. I just happen to hate 12px Verdana and 13px Verdana being mixed together. It looks tacky.

If we're going to fix anything, we should make the posts alternate correctly first. Fixing that might fix the other problem. Maybe I'll look at that later.

Has anyone checked that IE renders all of this stuff correctly? Maybe that's BoB's problem.

Now that I'm home, it's definitely my monitor. Or should I say, the fact that I use my screen at too high a resolution for my video card at work to handle. I use something like 1600x1200 on a Compaq Deskpro - if I went one resolution lower and rebooted, it would be fine, but having a huge resolution is a valuable asset when it comes to spreadsheet work. :) But yeah, the 256 colours on my max resolution mean the two blues of EoFF are the same colour, and that's what caused the problem.

You shouldn't need to reboot to change resolution :p If the video card can't handle it, it won't let you choose such a mode in the first place - perhaps you're running at a resolution higher than the monitor itself is designed for :p

If you make quote tags alternate colour, can I ruin it all by using q tags and making the colour bleed into each other, thus causing some sort of third 'superblue' colour?

Blahg. There is a way to fix it. There's a way to make the spoiler truly transparent now too, now that I figured out how to make colors alternate. Darn you for making me do more work. :mad2:

Ok I played with the contrast and it looks a lot better. The black on the blue looks ok, but the blue on black looks terrible and I still hate them. Can't we switch to a more contrasting color like gray? The old lines were gray and it worked out.

Didn't I make spoilers truly transparent ages ago?
