I'll probably flip it on and watch for a little while. I don't really have a favorite Olympic sport, but track and field should be interesting. Here's hoping everything goes smoothly and that there is NO terrorist problems.
Take care all.
Amen to that. I hope the games are really good this year, I hope they're competitive!
The Olympics aren't really attractive to me as the organizers stunt the potential of the athletes by barring stimulants such as speed and cocaine.
Since i live in Greece i'm going to watch them. Here in Patras they're going to be held some football matches(hope to see famous persons,i heard that the Portugal team stays in a hotel in Rio,if i could see Ronaldo  !).Anyway my favorite sport is track too.
I have no interest in the Olympic games, but I can't deny that the opening show (right before the parade of nations) was awesome to watch. I'll probably look it up to download in a couple days.
Yeah, I'll be watching the rowing, being a rower myself. And some other sports as well. The Olympics in general are pretty bloody amazing to watch - the athleticism is incredible.
Being quite the patriot, my favourite sports to watch are the ones asians compete in and have a chance of winning. Diving, Table Tennis, the martial arts such as Judo, Gymnastics, Volleyball andSoccer:p
In Australia, we get a lot of Olmypic hype and it's hard to ignore Roy and HG every night when they're just so damn funny.
Maybe, just a bit.
I don't watch the olymipcs. I don't like any of the events. I actually refer to the olympics as 'The sports no one gives a damn about'. How often every year do you turn on the TV to watch a good game of Pole Vaulting?
I watch the Winter Olympics from beginning to end, but somehow I just can't get into the Summer Olympics. I'm sure I'll end up watching some bits though.

I'll watch what I can. I just finished watching the China-USA Indoor Volleyball match. I wanna see some baseball/softball, and hopefully a bit of basketball. The swimming and track/field sports just don't tempt me all that much.
I'll be watching. I can't wait for the, um, synchronised swimming.
Track and field athletics include my favourite events. Long-distance running is good as well (if only to marvel at how fit the athletes are!).
Yeaah! I watched some of it today, like Womens Vollyball USA lost to china. :( And men's boxing USA won against china. :D
I'm gunna be watching it. Part of my holiday homework in PE. ;)
I'm interested in the field Hockey Events as that is my sport. I'll just watch bits of it, I like watching the Gymnastic events as I think they are beautiful to watch.
Chaos
Hockey, but then there's also the Luge and Bobsledding, all of the skiing and ski jumping, all of the skating...speed and figure, and even Snowboarding. I watch it all. :cat:Quote:

It's not often the entire world can agree to do something together so well. Then there's the fact that every event features athletes who've trained in their event for years, so you're seeing the absolute best that each nation has to offer. The events are all so brief, too, in most cases. No chance to get too bored, unlike most "big" sports which can last over an hour.[q=edczxcvbnm]I actually refer to the olympics as 'The sports no one gives a damn about'.[/q]Or how about 'the sports edczxcvbnm doesn't give a damn about'?
Ever watched the world's best martial artists or table tennis players go at it? Ever seen anything as physically impressive as a floor routine in gymnastics? It's the diversity of the Games that sets them apart. Even 'obscure' events like dressage, archery, airgun and others get the attention they deserve. And with the Olympics, you can be sure that the people competing are the best around, not just over-paid media creations earning their 'appearance fee'. So many of the events - swimming, target shooting, practically every track and field event - are about personal excellence, rather than simply beating a single opponent. The aim's not to win in any way possible, but to be the best you can be. Sets it apart from 'professional sports', in my books.
To add to Big D's comment, these athletes truly love what they do. They train, and they don't ask for money. It is an honor and a privilage for anyone of any nationality to come together for the Olympic games. Much as was the custom in ancient Greece, a certain peace seems to come with this as representatives from so many nations come together to compete and push their limits. The excitement they must feel is enviable indeed.
I am not fond of most sports, in fact, I detest most physical activity. However, I like the Olympics, if not for the sports themselves then for the principles that the games embody. It is truly an amazing concept.
My main reason for watching was to see if Michael Phelps could swing eight gold medals. So much for that.
Maybe I'll watch the U.S. basketball team embarass itself. . . naaaaaah. I'll keep it on track and field stuff.
It was refreshing to see the 'Dream Team' get thrashed by Puerto Rico. I know they're not the best team the US could field, but they're still worth something to the tune of 300mil. The Aussies got pipped by Greece, though. Phooey.
Are Roy and HG shown anywhere other than here? They're absolute class!
I really like the Olympic Games... 'cause of all the buzz around it, the variety of sports, the diversity of people (country vs. country), and the utter and over-whelming togetherness and competitive aura that event has.
Not everything is made of football, baseball, basketball and hockey, you know.Quote:

I never watch the Olympics. It just holds no interest for me. I rarely watch sports at all, and never very often, so the Olympics just arent my cup of tea. I occasionally enjoy watching gymnastics though, cause it's interesting stuff.
Well...it looks like everything is going swell, people are getting along, and everything seems great. I just hope that it can stay this way for next week! I WANT MY TRACK AND FIELD! :D
I watch if I'm bored or mom says something goos on like girls beach volley ball :joey:
yeah....womens beach volleyball rocks
Yay! I wanna watchthe Olympics. I mean;I am watching. I watch gymnastics, diving, swimming , tennis...well;anythingtht'son and interesting.
I'm watching the olympics, it's so awesome this year. The aussie's are going strong, I was so excitied when Thorpe won gold in the 200m...and when aussies have won gold in other events, second on the medal tally!!! Very happy I am :):):)
Whos #1 on the gold medal tally?
w00t U-S-A ALL the WAY!!!!

I like the olympics. I don't get into any of our regular sports (football, basketball, baseball, etc.) so it's nice to watch a sporting event that I can get into.
I don't like the Olympics any more. I'm tired of them, and of sports. People take these things too seriously. When an athlete makes a dumb mistake, their country gets mad. Getting mad over a game is pointless.
Sorry to sound so gloomy, it's just how I feel. :shame:
WOOOOHOOO USA just won the first fencing womens gold in 100 years :p
Why do they only show sports at which the USA is good at? :(
Bert, I think China is leading in gold medals.
China IS winnig in the gold medal count but america has 1 more overall medal.
Go CHINA!!!!!
ps.this is only at the moment of this post.stats may change in future.(duh)
Just so people know...I don't really watch sports to begin with. I think baseball is the most boring game in the world. Football is too slow. Basketball has too many games(my favorite sport). Hockey...is soccer on Ice. Soccer is boring as well as most sports. I can get into a game every now and then but don't think I like to sit down and watch sports like that every week. Why would you assume that I like those other sports in the first place? I only really watch the playoffs-finals in BB and nothing else really. Maybe the occasional game but not devoted or caring too much.
Also I consider a lot of these really minor things to be more of a hobby than anything. Archery, Ping Pong and other things along those lines are more of a hobby than a sport. You can be really good at it but it doesn't make it a sport.
I also disagree with the way the Olympics are put on a higher level of 'honor' than the rest of the sports world. There is corruption and blatant advertising all over the place. I am going to use the winter olympics as an example. The down hill skiier who did pot yet still was able to retain the gold. The whole russian ice skating scandel by attempting to fix the games by pressering other countries into giving them good scores and others bad scores...result? TWO gold medals in an event.
The only reason this stuff isn't around as much as other sports is because it happens for a few weeks every four years instead of 16-24 weeks EVERY year.
Of course the medal standings take on a whole new appearance with a bit of statistical tinkering.
Gold medals per capita:
1 - United Arab Emirates - .408
2 - Australia - .306
3 - Greece - .187
4 - Slovakia - .184
5 - Switzerland - .136
Total medals per capita
1 - Slovakia - .737
2 - Australia - .716
3 - Slovenia - .517
4 - United Arab Emirates - .408
5 - Mongolia - .373
Weighted medals (G=1.5, S=1, B=.5) per capita
1 - Australia - .741
2 - Slovakia - .737
3 - United Arab Emirates - .613
4 - Greece - .328
5 - Netherlands - .311
...
26 - USA - .078
36 - China - .017
Yes, I really have nothing better to do... :rolleyes2
Here's something to give a clue why there's so much animosity towards the US when it comes to the Olympics; below are the total medal standings when it comes to the US since the first Olympiad in 1896(excludes US boycotted Olympics):
2nd, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 1st
So think about that. The US has never finished lower than 3rd in the Olympic standings. Only in Seoul, Korea did the US fail to win more gold than any other country.
So yeah...I love the olympics...it's nice seeing envy in other countries because it provides a more competitve spirit. In the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, the US won a record 174 gold, that alone is more medals than 170 countries have won on their own individually in their overall olympic history.
