Thread Revivals

Randomly, someone, most likely a newbie, will post in a thread that has been dead for an extended amount of time. As we all know, this is a thread revival and is usually closed right away, if the time between the last two posts is significant.

Now, I can understand somebody reviving something from the first page. It's still up there, and if you're not paying attention to the dates, it's easy to think that it's still somewhat active.

But I ask you, when someone revives a thread that's over half a year old (I just actually saw one that hadn't been updated for ten months) how do they manage it?

Do newbies know that this sort of behaviour is not looked well upon, but use their excuse of newbness to revive it anyways? Or do they simply not know what they're doing? I don't know about you, but I don't view threads that are farther than half way down the page (unless it's GC where you get a lot of traffic.) I barely ever touch the second page.

Threads that pop up a year later have to have been revived from at least the third page. This brings me to the conclusion that those who are responsible for thread revivals are either looking for these threads, or just have a complete lack of common sense.

What do you think?

There are some people who think its funny, and keep doing it, or some people who try and make it "their thing" and keep doing it. It's a pain in the ass, really. Unless it's the FFV forum, because that stuff is so old it smells.

I think that a lot of them honestly don't reilize(sp?) it, most likely because they haven't been in a forum ever before.

On a sidenote, how long is it before a thread is considered "dead"? 3 months, 6 months, what?

Some are just ignorant. They dont know any better. Not a knock or flame against them or anything. Maybe people did a search on a topic they were about to post, and they found it and posted in it, but it happens to be really old. Mistakes happen.

but i always wondered:how/why do some threads get "locked"?

Mods or Admins can close them - usually if the thread becomes inappropriate, dead and someone revives it, or spam-filled (my favorite :D). I consider a thread dead after two weeks, m'self.

If they're too inappropriate for viewing, they'll be deleted. For the other reasons they'll just be closed. Inappropriate behavior such as flaming will get a thread closed, but not always deleted.

I have to agree with princeofdarknez so far, I'd think they do it on purpose. I just can't believe that with how often it happens that it's an accident.

They probably just don't care. That's why so many of them are getting banned. Because they disregard the rules. This is in my opinion, though.

Because anything over 18 is deleted and replaced by a statement from the staff for others to look at so they don't do the same. Thats the only reason I can think of that keeps them from deleting them all together.....future reminder and warning.

i don't understand why nebies do it either. like, you see it's from a long time ago, even if reviving it was funny, you'd look like loner considering your answering a dead thread, lol. kids these dayz...

There is nothing wrong with answering a dead thread as long as the topic is still relevant and gets more replies from other people.

The mods seem to differ on my ideas on that though xD

No I don't remember reviving any old threads.

Yes, but there is a statue of limitations on those things. Some forums have a shorter time period. GC gets so much traffic that even a month is too long, but that's just the way it goes.

I think people who revive the old topics don't realize that it is a bad idea. Newer members search the forums they like for interesting topics and when they see one they'll post in it disregarding that it is from september 03 or something. It hasn't become that big of a problem.

Why is a month too long? Why can't a topic keep going after death if it is fun and reasonable.

That question deserves an answer. I've never been too thrilled with the policy, but I remember it being explained enough somewhere that I was satisfied. I'll try to find it for you, or maybe another staff member can recite it.

Del, I wouldn't mind reviving this because I realy wanted to post in it. My scanner was broken and I finaly fixed it.

Edit: So, basicly if I want to post my hand I should make a THIRD topic about it instead of just using the old one? I dunno...that doesn't make sense to me.

I never really mind if someone brings back an old topic. It actually saves server space to bring up an old topic rather than make a new redundant one.

I never hold it against anyone if they bring back a topic that's even a year old, I never understood why people would get so angry about that. Oh well.

True. Just because some people find the notion of typing with their feet or noses amusing, doesn't mean we should think any less of them!

I think Amanda will be able to vouch for my notoriety when it comes to reviving old threads, and I seriously don't think it's such a bad idea.

A lot of the time I'll read a thread and it won't apply to me, or I'll have nothing interesting to say in it, and if that thread still happens to be around months later and I can post something tangible in it, why not?

If you don't want people to revive threads, get staff to close/delete them more frequently. There's enough people here.

If they have something interesting to say on the topic, why not let them? If they're going to revive it with a smilie yeah, that's bad; but I'm sure there is some situation where they're bored, and reading all the pasts posts and see a thread they like and say "Dang, I wish I was here when that topic was made!" And, to save everyone from re-typing their posts, they save you work by bringing that thread right back.

can a "hot" thread be deleted?i don't think it should since it;s so popular, even if it does get outta hand, just due to the fact that its so large, theres a lotta valuable opinions in there. i apologize about my last post, it was in anger...forgiveness is the attribute of the strong, remember?

Those threads don't get deleted, they just get closed. People can still view them.

Hentai chicks are fine...up to a point. So far I haven't had to remove any, but maybe I should pay more attention to avs instead of just sigs. :) Middle fingers, however, have a specific meaning, which is not "appropriate". Monsters are just made of cookies. :monster:

Back to the topic: I close old threads because the members that have posted in them are more than likely not around anymore so it's kind of pointless. If the topic is worthwhile though, a new thread will give fresh input on a subject.

Lon611: Almost any image can be resized to be 60 x 60, but if you don't have the necessary programs yourself (such as Photoshop), you can post in the Avatar thread in the Help Forum and someone would be more than happy to help you out. I myself haven't banned too many members, but the ones that I did ban were notable. If you go against the major rules, such as posting porn, you will be banned.

I close pretty much ever revived thread I see. Unless someone says otherwise.
