i dunno if its a good idea to slang anime off....
i personally LOVE it!!
fav stuff FINAL FANTASY and neon genesis evangeleon!
you have your own opinon...but i really disagree!
I was pratically raised with Anime around me... So I have to love it.
And What do you mean it's got bad art form? You should see american "cartoons" they distort them selves (I do like them a litlle but They look TOO much like drawings) Animes look as realistic as a drawing can with out going 3D. I aplaude them
Yes I think everyone in the world has big glassy eyes and spiky hair. Well maybe the freaks do...
Yeah, and the eyes are really the biggest body part. And they really do become heart shaped when the person that owns them sees something he loves. And a sweat drop always appears next to a persons head when the person gets embarrased. Just one sweat drop though. Yeah, it's pretty realistic. [/sarcasm]
I think American and Japanese cartoons can shake hands when it comes to realism :p
Oh, and I agree with Doors if there was any doubt.
I totally disagree. The artform is beautyful and really cool. I like it. And while I've only seen a very few animes... some of them where much better than most other movies I've seen. So... yea... I disagree. :tongue:Quote:

I can't say I really like anime. I have nothing wrong with it, really. And I don't care if a lot of people I know watch it. But, the only thing I have against it is how a lot of people become so obssessed with anime that it's the only thing they talk about and they see it as practically their life, it's just.. well, I find it really annoying sometimes.
And, I don't see really any cartoon realistic. Japanese, American or wherever. I thought that was the whole point of cartoons.
He's right you know, but what is more terrible than anime is the obsessives who allow it to take over their lives, or cosplayers.
Or people who find Cosplay erotic, theres a special corner of a distant hell reserved just for them.
That said, if I could drive, I'd join this : http://www.i-mockery.com/ddaaf/default.php
Everyone has their own opinion, and I respect that. I personally enjoy anime. I prefer its animation style to American. I also like the stories. There are some really stupid animes out there, but then, there's also some really stupid American movies and cartoons as well. Wether or not anime 'sucks' is all just opinion.
In case you didn't read any of that, I disagree. :)
The anime genre is so diverse it is impossible to stereotype it on just a handful of shows that you might dislike. If you choose not to watch it that is all well and good, but it is annoying when people stand up and start blathering about how anime sucks without having any real knowledge on the genre. If you've sampled a good amount of the anime out there, then you're free to say that. If not, you are ignoring the facts, and thus I can safely say you have no idea what you're talking about.
I have seen a bunch of anime out there. And how can you not see a bunch of it if every persons sig has an OMG INUYASHA LOOK LOOK or DBZ RYU OMG! or OMG KAWAII!!! :))) genre stuff in their sig. Also I used to like Anime when I was younger and I found my fair share of "samples" during the time.Quote:

Oh my god. I never though I'd see the day. A thread about anime that's actually not worshipping it. *wipes imaginary tear from eye*
But seriously, anime is overrated. Some anime is good, but it's not THAT amazing.

While the artwork itself might be very good, if the plot doesn't interest me then I won't watch the show. The only Anime I've ever really seen is mainstream stuff like DBZ and Yu-Gi-Oh, anything more obscure gets very little airtime over here. However, what I've seen of so-called 'good' Anime hasn't really been fantastic, and still doesn't appeal.
This doesn't mean it sucks, just that it's not my personal preference. American animation seems no better than Anime, with both styles having plus and minus points, but both being somewhat disappointing.
Of course, for every person who finds anime uninteresting, there's one who is utterly obsessed with the stuff, with a wardrobe full of imported DVDs and who cosplays twice a week*. It's because the genre has such popularity that it doesn't 'suck', since to maintain such a loyal fanbase it must have quite a lot going for it. Sure, you may not like it, but that doesn't mean that it's a bad artform. The best thing to do would be to ignore it, and leave the fans to their passion.
*Yes, I'm aware that this is an exaggerated and inaccurate statement. Go away.
*Yes, this too. Be quiet.
I've seen my fair share of Anime (not just the DBZ type stuff) and threadstarter is right, it really isn't that great. I believe that if it was made in a country like America (but had the exact same content), people would like it less.
http://members.aol.com/drg4/cablepic.jpg
X-Men is much more patriotic anyway. I mean, really, Cable could PWN Kaneda or whatever any day.
I happen to really enjoy a lot of the anime out there. Also, I never understood how everyone could catagorize anime in one big ball. I suppose that's because of the crap that's going mainstream. I will agree that there are certain shows that are incredibly stupid and sadly enough, that's the stuff that's catching on here in the US and is overpriced and overplayed.
To any disgruntle anime haters, try watching things like Samurai X, Hellsing, or some deeper rooted animes. ( And if you have then I'm glad you gave it a chance. ^_^ Too bad you didn't enjoy. ) The friends back home hated anime but would at least sit with me during Samurai X or the Cowboy Bebop movie without me having to tie them down and enjoyed it. ^_^;; I even got my dad to sit down with me during some animes and he enjoyed it.
Not all anime is about a middle school girl gettings special powers or transported to another world and OMFG KAWAII NO BAKA, NO DA?!?! ( I butchered that one purpose . . . ^_^ ) You just have to search for the gems in the bunch.
( Although, I enjoy the spastic, crazy stuff too. Word up to all the Excel Saga fans. )
But as said, one's opinon is their own and continue to believe what you will cause I'll continue to love my anime regardless.
By the way - Lindy, that website it the BEST. I had a good laugh at it. Hehe. I also found this awesome Arnold Swhathaneger in Japanese that made me die a thousand wonderful deaths. [img]http://home.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/heart.gif[/img]

Not saying that I hate American cartoons, because I love 'em; just that there are many different art styles. How can you say which is the best, when everyone draws differently? Anime artists draw their characters in a way that fits the anime best.

Wow, making a thread so specifically attack something you "hate" for no apparent reason, that wouldn't affect you in any way unless you were sitting down and watching it. Your maturity level is one I must bow to. :)
As for me, I love anime. It's really the only thing I'm into anymore. BSSM, Gravitation, Steel Angel Kurumi, Excel Saga, and the best, Puni Puni Poemi = [img]http://home.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/heart.gif[/img]. I really don't see how anyone could say films like Akira, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Adolescense of Utena are ugly, much less the "most ugly".
I wouldn't be shocked to find out you were a Nazi or Klansmen...really, I wouldn't.
While I hate most of the newer cartoons coming out I really like some American cartoons, like Invader Zim. Not all the movies are stupid, maybe just the ones you've seen.Quote:

I've read the manga for Inuyasha its not that appealing. DBZ is godawful.
For the good ones, Neon Genesis Evangelion is certainly a must, I'm quite fond of Rurouni Kenshin myself (Samurai X being the OAV). I've heard good things about Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop, and many people like Trigun though I've heard of people who dislike it. As I said earlier, there are many good anime, and there are many bad anime, its no different than any other form of cinema. You wouldn't make a broad statement such as "I hate movies" right? This is essentially the same thing, anime is far too broad to be classified as one entity.
Pikachu and co. scare the hell out of me.
I'm afraid I've only seen the anime that finds its way onto terrestrial TV in the UK, which I'm pretty sure is the worst kind. Those that I've seen thus far - Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z and something else which was basically the same but probably had some subtle but minor difference (like a different name) - have been pretty awful.
Rorouni Kenshin and Ninja Scroll are both amazing.
I've seen Steel Angel Kurumi too. Strange stuff.
i advise you to get perfect blue!!! and if you can afford to get neon genesis evangelion!! well worth it!! the uk does suck when it comes to terestrial tv...Quote:

I like FF as a game.My favourites are the sprite ones which arent as anime as most of the other FFs(FF7 :/) and FF8 which isnt really all that anime.

I agree with Dingo and Doors. I personally hate anime, and I've said this before. Strangely enough, the only anime that I've ever liked is one that most anime fanboys hate (Digimon :p). I don't like it primarily because anime fanboys obsess over it and think that it's the greatest thing ever created. Most of it seems very, very stupid to me.
i like digimon, so much better then pokemon...but i love anime...Quote:

I would say that I am not an anime fan. There are ones that I like(Gundam anything is usually a winner with me) but the vast number that I hate or dislike dwarfs the number I care about. Part of the problem is that anime doesn't know how to be a comedy at all so all of the comdey anime already blows. Then the drama ones usually have to be pretty damn good(Fullmetal Alchemist). Movies almost always suck(Akira).
When I say the comedies don't know how to be a comedy, what I mean is that they have a huge greater plot and when it starts to come down towards the end they throw out the comedy and it gets way to serious. America knows how to do a comedy cartoon right while Japan has noing clue what they are doing.
I can always sit around and turn on Cartoon network and what some Ed, Edd and Eddie or some other lame crap and have a decent laugh 90% of the time where as in anime its probably more like 24% of the time due to the greater over all plot and character development. If I wanted any of that I would be watching a drama.
I love to look at anime as an art. However, the stories of the series and movies are usually so dry and/or strange, I want to go to sleep. There are a few series I like, so it's not that all anime is miserable, but often, I think it is. Usually, I find myself looking up still images, fanart, and such stuff like that because that's what I like more about anime. How it looks.
I got an idea to all of you anime haters. If you don't like it then don't watch it, if anime comes on the TV then change the channel.
Hentai, baby. woo woo
Hells yeah!!!! Someone else!!!!
If you hate Anime you hate Final Fantasy and you would not play it and you all have so one word....
..... STAGED!!!!!!!
Explain. The game isn't an anime, though it anime style at times. The FF anime IMHO wasn't that great to begin with anyway.
acually... it is Anime because they created SQUARESOFT
Umm... no? Square was created by the software firm Denyuûsha in 1983, and two years later began to develop games for the Famicom; and almost had declare bankruptcy until Final Fantasy was released. That is what kept them in business. Square was not an anime company. They just happened to make an anime series based on their successful franchise. I'm sorry, but your logic is off here.
I can't say for sure whether you'll like anime or not. There are some that I don't like, some that I can't understand, and a few that I adore. It all depends on your taste. Fine, you may not like anime, that's fine.
Just as long as you counter any anime fanboys. It's amusing to watch.
If there's one thing I don't like, it's the fanboys/girls who think whatever's the greatest. I'm sorry, but anime is not the all-great thing. I enjoy it very much, but I can't think of it as the best. Sure, some are very beautiful, and funny, and for that, it's very enjoyable. :)
Final Fantasy is not anime. Quit saying that.
I don't like anime. I'm not going to attack it or the people that enjoy it. It's just not for me. And I do like Final Fantasy and I'm going to get extremely angry with anyone that tells me that it is impossible to like Final Fantasy and not like anime.
Anime has spawned a generation or two of people who think that they can learn japanese from watching it, and then live in Japan, possibly either getting a job as an anime artist/game designer, or going to Tokyo Tower and being transported into a magical anime world where they are magical Kawaii Neko Neko warriors who have to save the world with their magic sword/staff/whatever.
When in reality they'd be lucky to get a box to live in upon arriving in Japan, after they realised they won't get far calling everyone they meet "baka".
Anime is annoying, and very silly, but the people affected so much by it are even worse.
I do agree that the anime humor, while it can be rather good, is usually thrown out later on in the series to make room for more serious character development. Frankly, I like that, though I can see why people wouldn't. It's not that I'm against humor, but I do like compelling stories and character development always takes center stage for me.
Actually, the Digimon series wasn't too bad. It did have its own depth and the storyline was rather interesting at times.
I'm not an obsessive fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, but I dislike it when people who've seen Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon and Pokemon suddenly come out and say "OMF ANIME IS TEH SUXORZ!!!!!!11111"
It's a wide genre, and, with all genres, there's the good and the bad.
Why do people instantly assume that people who dislike anime haven't seen any?
I've seen a wide variety, since once upon a time I liked it because I was curious about it, then I just got plain sick of it and realised how it was nowhere near as special as people assume it to be. >___>
And for the record, I've never actually watched a whole episode of Sailor Moon or DBZ.
Some anime is cool, but sometimes it gets out of hand. Like in DBZ they are powering up and for 5 minutes you hear goku going "aaaah!!" like hes going to take ain his pants. And then he goes louder because he's constipated. "ahhhh super sayian 25!!!" "nuclear fart attack power to the 10000!!" and then you see a nuclear smoke cloud that has a power of 1000000000000000 and can kill you!!
Like I said, some of it is cool. Like robots in Gundam fighting each other, or MD Geist, and Beserk...
It may to you, but not to others. I think anime is one of the more beautiful forms of animation. I have had to put up countless Western cartoons that have had hideously deformed people, and anime was a sigh of relief from that.Quote:

There are anime series that I do like, but it's not something I am obsessed with. I think both sides of the argument here are taking things way too seriously, though.
Simple solution (you may want to read this a couple of times because I know the concept is very hard to understand for some people):
If you like anime...watch it.
If you do not like anime...do not watch it.
Why do people who complain about anime always say they hate it without giving any real reasons and thus leading us to believe that such is the case?Quote:

Anime is a PAST TIME, not a way of life. I actually know someone who pretty much failed french class last year, because all she did during that class was read little anime comics and try to write in japanese. She also let me look at those comics, and all it was was weird crazy stuff with naked chicks with enormous boobs and guys in towels and enormous pigs on those girls (I'm being serious here.) It was scary.
If you watch anime, good for you, just don't let it consume you. Then it gets frightening.

Anyway, I agree with Lindy and Czech Republic. It's the obsessiveness of anime that's awfully annoying, not so much the style itself. Althought I do find them a bit repulsive, from what I've seen of it so far. :p

Yeah, getting obsessive over anything is the problem, not the thing itself (anime in this case) :p Look at all the trekkies out there and other weird fanbases for other series/films/whatever like Buffy or Red Dwarf etc. etc., they're just as bad as people that take anime too far :p

I don't see why everyone is taking this so seriously and in some cases, insulted by other people's opinions. If someone doesn't like anime then they don't. They can make fun of it and put it down all they like . . . it doesn't hurt the fact that you like anime. =/
I personally make fun of people who are hardcore in to Star Wars ( including myself even though I hardly follow it anymore ) or Star Trek or StarGate, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wrestling, or something else along those lines. To all the anime fans taking offense to what others are saying, I'm sure there's some trend that annoys you and you make fun of those people.
And yes, obsession is bad. I buy a lot of anime/manga but I'm not going to put myself in a dangerous living position just to have it ( even though, yes, I have come close to failing my French class because I was reading manga ). But it's no different for anime fans to obsess rather than wrestling fans, football fans, any collectors, etc. That's what people are trying to point out. They aren't just 'attacking' anime obsessors but anyone who obsesses to begin with.
And I'm still loving these Japanese Arnold commercials. [img]http://home.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/heart.gif[/img]

(Gundam SEED ^__^)
chaos: I admit, I can't stand it when people get overly obsessed with any anime. But still, I believe it deserves most of the praise that it is getting. I detest DBZ, as in my opinion, it brings out the worst of anime. Three episodes filled with one guy charging up until his hair glows yellowish/orange.
Rubedo: Although, there are also very good animes within the large pile of them. For me, it is Gundam. SEED, Wing, and the older series of Gundam were great in my eyes. The storyline, the characters, all absolutely believable. So I can't blame you for hating it, but, in my opinion, Anime is great.

And just for the record, many of the new animes that are coming out are based on much more american themes, or have been seriously westernized. Plus, alot of the anime you see has been butchered by american censors.
it all boils down to... if you don't like it, don't watch it. Just like several already have said
Yeah, the blood is removed and the subtitles can be so far off from the original context.
anime sucks?!? well i guess everyone has there own opinion but i think anime is awsome.
You are all crazy if you HATE anime... Hate is a REALLY strong word...
That it is.
We havent said we hate anime.Quote:

That's what I said. strong dislike and hate are two different things. In context, sucks means that it doesn't live up to expectations, or is disliked in a manner that's not hate, but not exactly cuddly love.Quote:

Flash movies like this are among the reasons why I hate anime.
Ofcourse there is a lot more...
Anything on newgrounds I generally think of as a waste of time, so it kind of goes without saying :p
So what isnt a waste of time?Quote:

One of my friends showed me some of the things on newgrounds, and i refuse to put my computer that sort of crap.
this thread was probably started to annoy Anime fans and try and start a flame thread. Do not play into Doors hands, just ignore him.

That isnt wasting of time just watch, theres many forms of art there that are great, i just happen to really like the one Doors posted because simply theres not enough of it around. You have to find the ones that really are good, dont just go for ANY flash, i have seen my fair share of true art conveyed through flashes in newgrounds that are good(ignore the bad) to make me go there again and again. Brakenwood, FFA+, Sunscreen Tree up there, and alot of other flashes. Tons, just fliter out bad stuff like you usually do.
Generalizing anime only to the crap ones are like how we compare it to spoongebob(which i dont like). Watch Genshiken which is about the Otaku culture(and a girl that hates that culture), see what people who like this stuff do. Cosplay, watch anime, read manga and discuss about plot twists(which most american shows fail to get and only have episodic natures which i HATE and therefore hate DBZ and Inuyasha about). Otaku is a culture in a way. If you hate it so much you dont have to participate.
The real anime that is good usually dont spawn over 28ish episodes(or in Full Metal Alchemist's taste, 51). Most of them are very touching in terms of people banding together and overcomming hardship and also have alot of plot twists for the most part. The comedy is also something i like, its just not the american comedy i see everyday here, its sorta one of those asian things Oo I have very little interest in american animation and i am probably opposite in whatever the original poster said, i like asian animation compared to american ones, and even the episodic anime, seems ALOT more involving than the american ones except Teen Titans...but the creator also had some anime stuff in it.
I have Dragon Ball Z for tape in chinese dub and its much more better, the english one butchered alot of things up and theres almost NO staring at those tapes so i didnt know what alot of ppl said about DBZ until i watched an english one the first time. If you want anime most of the time, watch the subtitled ones that arent translated by an american company and instead from a fansubber.
I recommend you watch Full Metal Alchemist, Chrno Crusade, Genshiken, and even Fruits Basket subbed from fansubbers. Those are top quality anime that are worth your time. Just most people do not see enough of the good ones to really know most animation...and base it off DBZ and Inuyasha which are one of the worst ones out there...and even personally i consider Kenshin and Trigun anime weak compared to their manga counterparts and to the ones i listed.
Ramen is "doll noodles" in china and yes i am pretty sure its from china then japan sorta took its own name and improved on it. I can suvive on ramen no prob as long as its not the instant ones ^^;
Anime is great unless you make too many episodes and series stuff like beyblade, pokemon and digimon just lost the plot and weren't worth watching oh and yes the noodles were from china but whats that got to do with anime?
It wasn't always what people think of it as now. If you have ever had real Ramen noodles from a Japanese resturant or a Chinese resturant that still serves it, the you would know how much better it is.Quote:

(SPOILER)Quite Possibly, No, Dunno, God Knows, Nope, Probably, Because that's people
We're not trying to convert, jusst trying to share opinions.
Your not gonna get blasted, and people should just nurse there own opinions, not try and cause distress to those who argue back when faced with such a situation.

I used to watch aload of anime. Even anime I didn't take an interest in, I either bought it or rented it.
I really don't care for anime series that much any more. I'd rather read Manga. Not sure why, it just appeals to me more. I'll watch the occasional Anime movie every now and then, but I usually get bored before it ends, unless it's really good.
Also, when I stopped buying anime, I noticed I saved up alot more cash to spend on video games/CDs. ;)
not all animes are like that now slap yourself.Quote:

Cool stuff.

Doors: Reviving a thread to add something constructive to it is one thing. Reviving a thread just to say you now want it to die is very bad spam. Don't do it again.
