Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" has been considered by many to be one of the best albums of the last 10 years.
I whole heartedly agree.
Others include:

- The Mars Volta "De-loused in the Comatorium"
- The Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream"

The Wall was pretty good too-- it sorta like looped and stuff.

although I generally prefer the cds i make myself

I base all of my choices on what I never get sick of. Each and every one of these albums I have been listening to for years and have yet to get tired of them. I can listen to them like they were only just released.
It's gotta be Silverchair's Diorama, for me. Comparing that to their previous cd, it's a huge change. Probably not a welcome one, for some, but I think it's genius. Particularly "Across the Night". Beautiful.
Most albums by The Smashing Pumpkins are pretty damn good as well. I couldn't specify one particular album, though, because they're blending all together in my head...
