To all you rap haters

EDIT: 4 skulls were suppose to appear in the title, but eh. The real title is: To all you rap haters: you.

I'm so tired of it. I don't know what people have against rap. Yes, I know some of you baffoons will say "Well, what about you hating anime?" I hate anime for legit reasons. The only reasons I hear people speak of rap is "Oh, it's just bad poetry" or "Anyone associated with Eminem sucks." Yeah, thanks for your "enlightening" comments.

Most of you who hate rap are the most immature people I know. Rap is not my main form of listening music, I still prefer alternative/rock. But I always see rock-music people bashing on rap more than any other group. Not even country music fans bash rap as much as you "white-Americans" as Eminem likes to call them. That wasn't meant as a racist remark, I'm only quoting Eminem. But he's right, most of what I observed is that upper to middle-class White-Americans are more against rap than any other group of people I know.

I'm not saying rap fans don't bash you rock fans, but I hear more negativity from rock-fans towards rap than rap fans towards rock. It's stupid really. I don't listen to country music, I don't like it. But I don't hate it. Some of you rock-fans needs to listen to some Bone or Biggie, I swear...you guys just refuse to give anything a chance.

Some rap-haters have legit reasons. Obviously this hasn't been considered.
What they are, I wouldn't know.

I just prefer other music so much more.

Rap is catchy, and a good listen sometimes, but I really don't consider it music. The rappers are good song writters occasionally.

I like Eminem actually, his songs are good, but the rappers that constantly talk about some girls ass are very irritating. A good example of a terrible rap song is Snoop Dogg and Pharrel's Drop it like it's Hot. It's like:

I'm not saying that. I don't care if people don't like rap, I can accept that. All the reasons for hating rap is stupid. People assume it's just about guys talking about "booty" and "guns." Not like that at all. But I take it you took offense to what I said. But the next time people talk about how rap is all about booty, rock is really just all about people pretending to be depressed and how they have it so bad in life. Please. I know that rap doesn't require too much talent(other than R&B, what mainstream music these days does?), but it's not like rap is just " you whores" or "Imma kill you". At least you can understand what they're saying.

I can't even understand what the hell rock bands play most of the times because of all that screaming and mindless electric guitar playing.

If anyone has heard bands play acoustically, THEY ARE GOD AWFUL. With very few exceptions, bands obviously cannot play the right notes on acoustics if their lives depended on it.

But there are some bands that I adore like Five For Fighting or U2. There isn't a young band alive today that can hold a candle with U2. And no, don't compare Coldplay to U2...not unless you consider U2 dull, boring, and pretentious also.

While I don't like most rap, I would say 35% of it is good music. I never liked Snoop's music, never liked Dr. Dre, never liked Kanye West, and Shaggy is just plain horrible. But Bone, Biggie, and 2Pac were always my favorite rap artists. Bone especially. With their R&B tinged speed rap as someone perfectly described, it's truly unique.

Anyone who listened to Bone's "Crossroads" will most likely never say all rap sucks.

So for all you haters, go to hell.

The style is repetetive, the lyrics are often vulgar and crude, and I dislike the overall way the music is executed. I am a fan of classical music, and rap does not in any way, shape or form, appeal to me. I hate it with a passion.

There are a lot of people that dislike rap for legitimate reasons. Yeah, there are people out there that hate rap just for the sake of hating it, but for the most part, the people that hate rap have good reasons for hating it.

I dislike new rap. Give me old rap, like MC Hammer and Puffy from the good ol' days, then I'll listen to it constantly. The majority of new rap, nowadays, is about killing/beating people, sex, and drugs and the rappers are usually only speed-talking with a base and snare drum playing in the background with an additional computer generated tune. I like my music with actual instruments playing and with singers that sing more than one tune. I also like lyrics that aren't just about murdering people. If you like rap, terrific. You have your tastes and I'll have mine.

For the record, most bands have a DJ that generates music. So please, don't just put it on rap songs that have computer generated beats.

All music is repetitve, not one single genre isn't. So saying rap is repetitive while others is not is just bias.

And for rap singing only one tune, what makes that different from rock bands? Has anyone ever heard Linkin Park live acoustically? Anyone ever heard Creed Live acoustically? Good Charlotte? Hoobastank? Yellowcard? Bowling For Soup? They ALL stink. They couldn't hit an octave to save their lives. Some like Five For Fighting are great, and Green Day is decent enough that I'll listen to acoustically. At least U2 admits to being so-so acoustic players. So all these comparisons about how rap these days is just a single tune and repetitve beat is just the same thing with rock, country, alternative, and R&B.

While most rap is probably about drugs, sex, and violence...what about rock music? It's mostly about how life sucks and suicide. Please. If you're going to bang on rap like that, you might as well rip other genres that you listen to.

I don't listen to rock, and if you think Classical is repetetive, I beg to differ. While many songs have certain themes, the variety of music in the classical genre is astounding. You cannot listen to Pachelbel's Canon in D and Mozart's Requiem and say they are the same, unlike many rap songs.

I don't like listening to rap. I like listening to rock. Rock sounds good to me, rap doesn't. That's my reasoning behind it. I'm not all that fussed if people don't like the music I do, or if they choose to be a "hater". As far as I'm concerned, people can like and dislike whatever the hell they want.

I hate a majority of rap. According to my brother I hate "Midwest Rap" the most. It is slow and full of base(base is necessary for music but I like trebbile notes more) and is just god awful. They don't even sing half the time. They are just talking or speaking the lyrics.

I like some west coast rap because it is the opposite to an extent. It is fast paced and they have electroic sounds to help for the beat, which for the most part are more trebbile than base) and they at least act like they are singing. I still don't like it but I don't hate it.

Not to say that all is good or bad in each catagory but for the most part this is how it is...at least to me and from what I am told by people who like rap.

I meant mainstream music. I agree that classical music requires the most "talent" to create, as I use to be an avid classical music fan, but nothing new that comes out is ever appealing. And eventually you get sick and tired of listening to the same thing again. So nothing new appeals, while the old gets boring. Not saying classical music is boring...but the fact that nothing new that sounds good ever comes out leaves it a very little fanbase.

That's true, but bands also use guitars and they are actually playing the instruments, whereas rappers are usually just speaking quickly.

I'll also agree that Linkin Park is godawful live, but Chester sounds great on their CDs. I've never heard Hoobastank or Creed live, but I've listened to a couple of their songs and they sound good singing. Also, the key word here is singing. Most, if not all, rap is usually just a bunch of meaningless speaking.

That's usually just punk and goth music, and that's why I hate that type of music. Creed and Hoobastank don't sing about crap like that, though.

I whole-heartedly agree with you on how most mainstream music, nowadays, is nothing short of atrocious. There are some decent/good bands out there, though, that stand out. These bands are usually the underdogs of music society.

Hoobastank live makes me want to cry. They're atrocious live.

That's not necessarily true, there are newer Classical albums that are simply amazing. Most of them are fairly obscure, but they ARE out there.

I think rapping takes a great deal more talent than singing, but I don't have a problem with people disliking it, for whatever the reason. None of my business what they like.

I've yet to hear a Rap song that isn't some cheap beat over a cheap bassline played over and over for three and a half minutes. Music comes before the lyrics. Not that I fancy the "lyrics" most Rappers shout out.

I mostly dislike rap except as most of you know Nas. I'll listen to Shyne, Puffy, 2pac, Biggie and a few others but for the most part I dislike rap. I HATE midwest rap. I <3 NY rap though. Wu tang, The QB and such. I really don't know why I like Nas more then any other rapper, I guess it's just because you can tell how he's grown through his 7 albums in the last 10 years. I hate rap. I have legit reasons. I don't even really consider it music. People generally respond to a statement like this with, "Well, you're just not looking for good rap music." Well, I'm not about to search my life for good rap music, when there are other types of music that I enjoy 100 times more (country and folk) that are easy to find. My sister listens to the pop stations that play rap all the time, and it's just a bunch of crap. I don't want to listen to crap like that, talking about sex, drugs, and violence. There are easier ways to listen to good music that searching for it.

And can anyone blame me for not wanting to be near rap music? I deal with school everyday, walking to my car, getting a headache because of the bass coming out of people's car. The sound settings on my car are Treble 3, Bass -1. I can't deal with it.

If you listen to country and folk singers...listen to them play their instruments. They know what they're doing. They understand chord structure, and it's tasteful, in my opinion of course, an opinion not shared by many others. It's not too loud, a necessity in my opinion. Rap music is way too loud, and very little of it is actual music. Like Behold the Void said, listening to a classical piece like The Marriage of Figaro or his unfinished Requiem will show you what music is. Obviously country music does not get close to fulfilling the same type of musical requirements, but it's much closer than rap is.

There are always exceptions. There are exceptions in every music genre. I hate Pat Green, who is becoming more and more popular in the country music world. I don't like his voice or his song selection. His lyrics are dumb. However, there are plenty of other kinds of country music that come on that I do like. Rap, however, is a genre where it's too hard to find good music. I've never heard good rap music, and I'm not about to search for it. All of the rap I hear is not tasteful, too loud, and doesn't require any musical talent whatsoever. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to listen to it. And nobody can make me.

Furthermore, you can't ignore the issue of race. I'm sorry, but it exists. A middle class white male has absolutely no concern with listening to lyrics that don't apply to him. A lower class African-American male, however, can apparently relate to the lyrics. However, I can relate to Toby Keith's Should've Been a Cowboy. Though it seems dumb to some, I once had those same dreams of ropin', ridin', and wearin' my six shooter and ridin' my pony on a cattle drive, before I knew that there were very few cowboys left. That makes sense to me. That dream of being out in the open range appeals to me much more than being in the ghetto fighting for my life.

I hate rap music. I'm not afraid to say it.

I hate rap and i'll tell you why. It doesn't sound good. Alot of the times, it's just damn irritating to listen to. Another reason would be the fact that main stream rap musicians don't write their own songs. If you don't write you're own songs, no matter what genre of music you play, you suck by default and I won't listen to you. Now let me talk about the "lyrics" in rap. They are pointless. (Usually. I do like some of eminem's stuff because he doesn't always sing about pointless bs) If you're gonna make music, don't waste it by singing about "bling" or "ice". Also, rap lyrics are violent and sexist. Im not going to listen to music where the rapper is singing about killing or beating someone up. I also refuse to listen to music where women are treated like objects. Women aren't objects, and they aren't sex tools. I can reinforce this point by asking, "Have you ever seen a rap music video?" This is why I hate rap music, and I think that I have reason enough to hate it.

Let me explain why: rappers like all other artists work hard to get their message spread out,
that being said; all who chooses to use their time entertaining people should automatically have our respect.

Insert repeating beat - Hrmm, well almost every song has that. They use 3 or so different beats in this song however.

Insert ebonic speaking person - in this song, they arent really speaking ebonics much. even if there is an ebonic undertone, so what? Snoop is a gansta.

insert tounge clicking - Actually, this is very unique, and probally a big part in why it was a big hit. very catchy and different.

if that formula was that easy, i think there would be alot more rich people out there. these people are artists. not everyone could do what they do.

plus this song has some tight rhymes!!! Off his new album, R&G the Masterpiece, it isnt one of his best songs, but its not a bad song at all imo. Check out Pass it Pass it, Can you control yo hoe, the bidness, step yo game up, lets get blown and so many other great ones on there.

Not all rap songs are just pure base. 2Pac's I Ain't Mad at Cha is primarily piano based, along with Notorious Thugs. Destiny Child's Survivor is violin based as well.

The lead singer of every band has very little experience with an instrument.

But I also want to note, that while rapping is really talking, rock's lead singers are not that much better than rappers. None of them could sing a simple verse from R.Kelly's I Believe I can Fly. In fact, seldom do any lead singer can sing a proper note. They all scream or speak as well. I've yet to hear any lead singer actually sing to be quite honest.

And just because someone can sing, doesn't make the music good. Christina Aguilera can sing multiple octaves, but her music is never really that good. You look at an artist like Vanessa Carlton, who can't really belt it out, but makes great music due to her song writing and piano playing.

Also, because someone plays a guitar, doesn't really make them that talented. Electric guitars are much easier to play than acoustic guitars, and drums are not exactly instruments that require an amazing amount of talent. You look at some of the songs from Jay-Z's Black album, a lot of them had actual bands playing in them. You look at Bone Thugs n' Harmony's songs, a lot of them(almost 75%) had actual bands playing in them, some on the piano. It's amazing how people can say rap is so talentless, while most of the beats created are of actual instruments and not just computer generated.

Drums take an amazing amount of talent to play (if you want to play them well). Listen to some early stuff from The Who. No one but Keith Moon could have played that stuff.

How does it take more talent to play acoustic guitar than it takes to play electric guitar? Both instruments are limited to certain sounds that they can produce. And both instruments are limited in terms of what company of other instruments they can be played with.

I agree that singing and lyrics come after music, but adding a piano to a song doesn't redeem it from being garbage.

I agree that rappers are talented at speaking quickly, but they aren't poets.

That's true, Dingo. I love Christina's voice, but her songs aren't always that good. Her "Stripped" CD is nice, I have to admit. She may not have good songs, but they at least show off her range.

That was a joke. I don't like rap because it just doesn't appeal to me, usually. If you want to argue about it, I can tell you the flaws I find within it, but ultimately that won't change your view on it, so why bother? If you hate rap, fine. If you hate rock, fine. If you hate me, fine. This is America. We're free to hate whatever we want. Even if it's something someone else likes.

There is such a thing as good rap; I happen to actually like Eminem when most of the stuff I listen ot is punk and heavy metal, but most rap is absolute crap.

I listen to all sorts, though as I've already mentioned, punk and heavy metal make up the bulk of my listenings, such as soul, r&b (not that R. Kelly e, more the Aretha Franklin and Al Green kinda stuff), blues, etc. In short, I listen to what I call good music; this of course is a subjective view, but in general, it's something most people can agree to. A melody, meaningful lyrics, good singing... most rap is a recycled beat with some guy talking quickly over it, about tits and ass. Then you get people like Eminem, who talk about not falling into the "gangsta rap" lifestyle (that's how I interpret his lyrics; it's more like "Hey, look at me. I'm a total -up. Don't end up like me.")

When it comes down to it, there's bad rap and good rap, just like in every other musical genre. If we didn't bitch about it, what would we bitch about? If you don't like people bitching about your "favourite musical genre," well, tough . People will always bitch about it. That's human nature. Personally, I couldn't care less as long as you don't subject me to listen to it. And that is the key point; if you dont' like it, don't listen to it.

Personally I really don't like Rap. I've given it a chance and some of it's alright. I like Rock because for one I grew up listening to it and I like it. You and all your genres of Rap and R & B can't even compare to the greatness of the original Black Sabbath. Grunge Rock sounds a hell of a lot better than Rap too, and let's not forget Alternative Rock. That's some of what I like. If you don't like it, I really don't give a shit.

Do I like rap? Hell no. Well actually I adore Outkast, and Beastie Boys, but most people dont count the Beasties as rap. I like a few Emeniem songs, but they get tiresome.

And I read somewhere back about punk rock being whiney and singing about cutting yourself and all that crap; that's radio 'punk' as far as I know. I've never heard an actual punk song like that (try listening to The Misfits, Lower Class Brats, Narcoleptic Youth, Naked Aggression, etc).

But of course, most folks generalize any genre they dont like and talk about the sheer diversity of their own, so I wont get into that.

Rap isn't my favorite genre, alternative is. I never said anyone had to like rap, like the reply below to Abominatrix's statement, it's ironic how people put these false assumptions on rap and how easy it is to come up with music and how repetitve it is...yet what mainstream music isn't? If that was a shot at me, you didn't read my replies in my other threads. I don't have anything against rock, but the fact that most rap haters are rock fans, I might as well point out the things that make rock "so bad."

I try to be diverse in my music, and most of my music consists of rock/alternative. All these haters who keep claiming rap is some kind of crap that grew from the asses of black folks are idiotic and I'm going to defend rap against these stupid assumptions. I don't care if people hate rap, but don't go around making these false assumptions about rap when these same allegations are true of rock music.

Some people don't realize that "D-12" is actually a band, a lot of rappers have bands, you just never hear about them. They claim rappers have no musical talent, but rock music isn't much different from rap. Rappers_DO_HAVE BANDS. It's just that a band doesn't have to have a guitar player, drummer, and a DJ. Has anyone seen Joss Stone's "band?" She's an R&B singer, but she has a keyboard man, guitar players, etc. So please, some of you people really need to do your research before you bash on rap.

I don't normally listen to rap, or R&B, although given the right mood I would quite happily listen to Jurassic 5, Crazysexycoolera TLC, and a few others.

Most of my qualms with rap concern the packaging, or rather the glorification of scantily clad girls dripping off of a rapstar merely because he has a lot of bling, and despite their apparent 'womanising' ways.

Thank you. It's what I've been trying to preach all this time. I never had anything against rock music, but when people bash the "flaws" of rap, I'm allowed to bash the "flaws" of rock.

The Roots (or is it just 'Roots'?) are good, but I can't admit to liking much rap at all. But then again, my favourite genre of music is rock, but the vast majority of modern popular rock bands are pretty crap anyway.

Claiming not to be the one to turn things into a personal dispute is usually the best way to further one. Please keep that in mind.

There are only two conteporary artists that I will buy a new album from. One of them is eminem. I agree with Nicky that the rap image isn't for me, but I don't pay much attention to image or what the artists do in their free time. I just listen to the music and base my enjoyment of it on how it sounds. I find eminem to be quite enjoyable, as well as some other artists, but most of them don't make new albums anymore.

Anyways, there is bad music in every genre, and good music in every genre. In rock, there is alot of good music, and less (albeit alot) bad music. It seems that in rap, there is more bad music than good music. I respect Eminem, but most of the other main stream artists are just horrible. I am however, seperating R&B from rap, like it should be. Most of today's mainstream R&B sucks, like Usher. However, some older R&B like Tony Braxton is some pretty nice stuff even though I don't really listen to it.

Ya know I even used to listen to Eminem, but I dont like his music now. Eminem forgot to put the F in front of his name. What I mostly listen to these days is: Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, etc. I dont like that gangsta rap , some of the old school gangsta rap is ok (I know thats kind of contradicting)... If you dont like this form of music like others have said, then dont listen to it. :)

Everyone around me is so hardcore rap, I can't go too far speaking my views on it without getting "blasted on", as they call it. Most of them I can't understand because they talk like their favourite bling-toting heroes. And what's even funnier is they're all tiny white farmboys.

Which... is funny for me.

Might I start by saying that this is a very brave thread to make, even if it did get a little personal eventually. This was always going to turn in to a controversial issue, but at least there's some good debate mixed in there as well.

Now then, my CD collection is almost exclusively rock, or variants of rock. There might be a couple of movie soundtracks thrown in there, but I can certainly guarentee that there's no rap in there. There's not even anything close to rap, and that's the way I intend to keep it.

Nevertheless, I don't hate rap, or even dislike rap. As a matter of fact, I will actively listen to rap on the radio, sometimes (shock horror) ahead of rock music! The reason for this is very simple, rap is incredibly catchy. The beats, computer-generated and repetitive though they may be, stick in my mind. Certain lyrics amuse me. When it comes down to it, I'd rather listen to something mindless and catchy than something that obviously requires a lot of talent, but doesn't interest me. If talent were what I was looking for in my music, I'd do nothing but listen to Classic FM. In fact, this isn't the case, and I'll find myself listening to rap music from time to time.

That said, I'd never buy a rap artist's album, since it just doesn't have the lasting appeal to make me buy it. That sums up rap pretty well, in my view. It's good as background music, catchy to listen to, but simply not with enough substance to maintain lasting appeal. Does this make it bad music? Of course not. Like any other form of entertainment, it simply can't appeal to everyone, and cannot compete with other genres for my attention. For millions of other people, the situation is different, and rap music is their favoured genre. This alone suggests that rap music has to be doing something right, or else nobody would like it at all.

Of course, there's rap that I consider to be bad, and that I wouldn't listen to. But then the same is true of any genre. I'll take good rap over bad rock any day, and I'll gladly skip over K-DST and Radio X while playing GTA: San Andreas to listen to some of the catchy hip-hop tunes on Radio Los Santos. I simply don't like the rock/alternative music of the period, and therefore don't listen to it. I may like the genre as a whole, but none of the songs included are good examples of it, so I just don't listen. To summarise, I'm not a rap fan, but I listen to certain rap music over rock, because I consider neither genre to be completely good or bad.

If you hate rap, that's fine by me, whatever your reasons. But it seems to me that 'hating' a genre for the commonly cited reasons is a bit petty. You're free to listen to whatever you like, and it isn't like rap is being forced upon you. It may be all over the mainstream radio, yes, but that doesn't mean it can't be avoided. Simply don't touch those radio stations. Focus on what you like, instead of what you don't. It's no use blaming the artist for making bad music, when all you have to do is press a button to make it go away.

I myself prefer Rock but I will listen to anything that is catchy, where I live the majority of people who listen to rap are too busy beating "goths" and "skaters" up and stealing their money to give legit reasons why they don't like rock or whatever.

Yeah, where I grew up (Melbourne, Florida, basically Brevard County), you had all sorts of different kinds of people. Rockers, Punk Rockers, Rappers, R & B fans, Skaters, Goths, Metal Heads, etc. And not just a split race between White and Black; whereas, it was White (Caucasian), Black American, African American, Hispanic, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Latino (if that's what it's called and I think that's what was there), Oriental, Mixed, etc. I don't mind this because you have so many different varieties of people music-wise and race-wise. The reason I brought race into this was because you tend to notice a strict dividing line between "whites" and "blacks" where the "whites" like one thing and the "blacks" like the other. Unfortunately I moved to the Capital (Tallahassee, not in the city itself though) and now the majority is Black American and African American, few White (Caucasian) races, and VERY few of the etc catagory and some Mixed too I think. And the music is mostly Rap, R % B, and Gospel. Not much Rock here as there was for where I grew up at.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I don't really like Rap at all, and would actually completely hate it if it wasn't for the few songs that I actually like. I gave Rap and chance and there are very few kinds of songs that I actually like. They aren't played on the radio (that's for sure) and they are mostly old songs too. Not old-school rap, but this rap is older than the modern day rap that we all hear about. As for the rest of it, I like that saying of putting the C before the R in Rap. R & B and Gospels are very annoying and unfortunately I have to listen to that on the bus when going to and from school and I'm not about to complain either..I just put up with it.

But yeah, like I said; nothing compares to the original Black Sabbath if you ask me. Yes, there is Rock that sucks horribly, I can vouch for that. Most of the Rock I'm hearing on the radio is horrible. I hear bands who pretend to be Rock and they suck at it. I like some of the modern Alternative Rock like Linkin Park for instance, but I really like the Harder Alternative Rock, Adult Alternative Rock, and the old-school Alternative Rock a lot because they sound better in my opinion. We're talking about White Zombie, Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, and older stuff like that when I mention old-school Alternative. Personally, Korn is a harder Alternative as well, but that's in my opinion. Regular Rock is cool but most of the modern day stuff, sucks. I like the older bands of Rock such as Red Hot Chilly Peppers, Sublim, Bush (Bush might be Alternative for all I know), etc. But I also like the newer Rock such as White Stripes, System of a Down, etc.

That's stuff that I like from the late 80s, early-mid-late 90s, and a little after the late 90s. I also like Grunge Rock from the late 80s and the early 90s such as Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden. With that said, I might like the Garage Rock genre because they sound grungy like Grunge Rock did, I think. And Underground Rock kicks major ass. One band that I know of that was Underground that might have been Harder Alternative or Adult Alternative (if they weren't Underground) is Imprint. I only heard a demo CD from Imprint but they fricken rock in my opinion.

I also like older rock from the late 60s and all throughout the 70s. Classic Hard Rock, Classic Rock, late 60s Rock, 70s Rock, Psychedelic Rock, etc etc. Bands like the original Black Sabbath, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Lynard Skynnard (sp?), Aero Smith, Pink Floyd, Ten Years Past, Eric Clapton (sp?), etc etc.

Comparing the stuff I like to Rap, R & B, and the Gospels..I choose my genres of Rock and Metal over Rap, R & B, and Gospels anyday. I don't care if you like Rap, just don't make such a big deal about it to where you have to fucking sing out loud in class that get's VERY old.

Like I said, if you don't like what I like, I really don't give a damn.

A lot of people hate that gangster type rap because, well, it's horrible. It doesn't sound good, it promotes violence, hate crimes, demeans women, promotes drugs, etc. No, not all rap is like that, but I really hate rap that's like that, and it's a large majority of the rap that's on the radio/tv. I like some Eminem songs, he is a good poet, even if I don't like some of the thins he says. I like some Sweatshop Union songs. But they're really not typical rap.

i just think that people who hate rap and think that its just guys talking about killing ppl, doing drugs, and getting laid are just stupid. even in the case of VIOLENT songs, it wasn't unwarranted. in most cases, rap artists are just trying to get revenge for something that was said about them by another rapper. unfortunately, this leads to a never ending spiral (weirdest deja vu of auron's speach in ffx, lol). i mean, take a REAL artist, biggie, 2pac, etc. they talked about that, but also more important things, like LIFE. like feeding ur children. like giving props to your mom for what she went through,like mourning the deaths of ur closest friends etc, etc. rock does none of that.

in my eyes, i stopped listening to rock a couple years ago cuz most bands that were up and coming were repetitive, and everythign was so monotonous. i mean, how many interesting things can u do with 3, maybe 4 instruments?it got old to me after ahilwe. plus, everyone into rock at that time felt like they had problems and wanted to commit suicide.boring....

at least in rap they talk about specific problems, specific solutions, whlie making you want to get up and do something about urs. a majority of rock, on the other hand, are just vague and ambiguous sentences strung together about a tired subject to a couple of instruments.

The problem in this issue is that everyone looks at rap as any other form of music.
Mostly it isn't though. It's poetry spoken to a beat.
If you judge it like poetry, you can't say all of it sucks.
Someone is bound to have something intelligent to say.

And it really is more than guns and alcohol. The good rap has an underlying message or point to why the song was written. I pick-up on these, and thats what makes me think of a rap song a good. Sometimes i do wanna hear, the "shake it" songs, but thats only to dance to.

Honestly, I wish people would make threads like this more often. But current board rules don't allow too many topics that spawn flamers. It keeps the boards more interesting, but since these forums are not owned by me, I can't really make those changes. It's much better to have threads like this than "What did you have for breakfast?"

I knew right before I made this topic that I would not only step on some toes, I would nail them down. But I don't really see it as too controversial, many people think I'm against rock/alternative, yet many of them fail to read some of my posts. I'm more of a rock fan than rap.

I'm glad more of the recent comments in this thread signified that rap isn't all about hoes and , and rappers do have bands and lead singers of bands are no better "singers" than rappers, for the most part.

What's frustrating of all is how people never see your implied intent. Like when I say "You can say that rock is repetitive too", they think I mean all bands. I thought many of the people here were old enough to know that the implied meaning is that "most" is repetitive...but whatever, 90% of all people never fully understand what others are saying.

Lastly, people should read what I posted in my Rants section on my website. It tells you all you need to know about my views, because maybe my frustration didn't portray them very well. But I get the feeling that once people read what I've said on my website and understand what I mean, you'll agree.

Personally, I'd say "wiggers" alone are enough of a reason to hate Rap music, but then I don't hate Rap as a genre, I just dislike some rap artists because I find their music boring and rather generic. There are several I like, though not music I'd listen to constantly, I certainly wouldn't actively try not to listen to it.

Yes, Wiggers are terrible. I'm so happy someone brought that up. If I see one more guy in some enormous spinner necklace they bought off ebay one more time, I'll cry.

at least in rap they talk about specific problems, specific solutions, whlie making you want to get up and do something about urs. a majority of rock, on the other hand, are just vague and ambiguous sentences strung together about a tired subject to a couple of instruments.

I'm sorry but you are sadly mistaken man. While you are right about the part where some rap has meaning behind it, and I won't deny this, and how you are right about current rock which is monotonous and repetitive and boring, the rest is wrong. Rock, just like any other genre, has meaning behind it. Listen to some older Rock if the new stuff doesn't appeal to you. Apparently you are judging all of Rock when describing this new shit. Why don't you listen to Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Metallica, etc. You want to know what you can do with three or four instruments? Magic, that's what. And maybe the people into Rock do have problems and suicidal problems, you don't know that. How can you say what they felt? Maybe there are people who act like depressing suicidal human beings who need to get over themselves, but to me it sounds like you are judging a majority of people, and some, could have been going through some kind of trouble that would drive them to suicidal thoughts. You don't know that. And don't even tell me that they told you that they weren't or something like that; somebody can tell you one thing, and do another. Did you question every single person?

You can do a lot of things with three to four instruments. I gave a list of bands that prove this, many more are out there. End of story.

I am a rocker. I prefer bands like Korn, Disturbed, Metallica, Static-X, to name a few. However, I do listen to (and sometimes like) other types of music.

I like rap. I really do. I just wish that some rappers (yeah you Snoop Dogg) (and you 50 Cent) would get it through their heads that you need diversity of topics as well as beats. I've no objection to songs about sex, prostitution, and drugs, but those songs keep on playing every single year. They have different names, beats, and lyrics, but it's basically the same repetitive crap in a different package. And yet every single year they become hits. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if this is the best rap can offer.

Another thing I object to is the language. Rockers often have filthy mouths, and I don't object to the F-word and stuff as long as it doesn't get too rediculous. But Snoop, there's only so many things you can rhyme with "n***a". I don't particularly approve of the way women are treated, either--many popular rap music videos are more or less soft porn with background music--but what really pisses me off is the N-bomb and the repetitive topics in general. I mean, come on--you say you came from the "hood" and you're a "gangsta" or "thug" so you should automatically be respected? Guess what, I lived in a tough neighborhood for a while, too. (Somebody brought a gun to school when I was in kidnergarten for Christ's sake.) I don't walk around flashing gang signs and telling everybody " off, n***a, I'm from da hood!" If someone asks, I tell them; if not, I keep my mouth shut. Actions speak louder than words.

You're generalizing quite a bit yourself. Rock does talk about that a bit more than I like, but there are plenty of songs out there that talk about many other things. Especially when you throw in "sub-genres" like punk, grunge, lighter rock, alternative...

I'm not saying that my complaints above hold true to all rap songs, either. I like I.C.P. (though I don't agree with everything they say), and I used to like Eminem until around the time "My Band" came out. (IMO, he's sold out and become the same old crap in white skin. As one magazine put it, "rebels don't have clothing lines".) Anyway, I didn't like them because they were good rappers (though they are), or for their good music (I.C.P., Eminem's beats are nothing special except for Lose Yourself). I liked them because A) they were different from the rest and B) I've yet to hear them say "n***a".

In short? I don't like rap because a lot of them don't have anything to say. Many rappers have talent, but they're wasting it. It's like Picasso becoming a pornographer or something. It's like someone else said, I could search for and find the good rap, but it's too much effort in today's flood of crap.

EDIT: BTW, Li'l Jon actually has said some smart things. "Don't start no , it won't be no " is how I try to live my life, and Wat U Gon Do brought up some good points as well (though I prefer it censored, because of the racial slur.) If Li'l Jon focuses less on partying and saying n***a and focuses more on doing something different, I'll actually buy his CD.

I don't necessarily like rap, it get's very annoying to me. Just because it might not suck, does not mean I have to like it more. It doesn't appeal to me. End.

I don't like rap at all. Its often played loudly and hurts my ears like hell. Whenever I say, "Hey, could you turn it down?" My classmates always hush me. Thats because the only time I hear rap is on field trips while riding in a parent's car, or even sometimes at school. I'm not exactly to fond of the lyrics either.

That's just my oppinion though. I don't care who likes it, as long as my ears don't get blasted so much that I go deaf or anything.

Actually, I'm a huge rock fan ( modern, alternative, metal, punk, stuff from the 80s and even 70s ) and I'd have to say that most rock songs I've heard ( especially from the 70s/80s era is about violence, drugs, and sex. ^_^; Even bands today sing a lot about violence, drugs, and sex. I'll admit they usually aren't as blunt as a lot of rappers are about it but the same principle still lies.

I understand how it upsets you that people bash on rap without, in most cases, backing up their reasons because I'm a huge Country Music fan and I deal with it all the time. "My wife left me and I lost my trailer so I'm gonna cry and drink a beer," is something I hear quite often and it pisses me off. So if anything, I can understand you. ^_^;

There are a few songs I can get in to but I think it's more for the sound than the actual lyrics, although I'll admit, when I can throw down some rhymes I feel pretty damn proud. xD!
I dislike the rap music that holds no real meaning behind the song other than to inform everyone about how 'ballin' they really are. That's what I hear a lot of lately. "I have ice, whores, and nice cars so don't mess with me or I'll beat you up. ( I don't speak the lingo very well. xD! )" That I don't really care for but there are, like in ever genre, the people who will mess it up for you. There are some country singers I listen to who make me shake my head and go, "And I wonder why people hate country."

I like soft asian music or video game remixes and stuff like that. Electronica and dance is good sometimes depending on the mood....i pretty much like everything to a certain degree. But everyone has their right to like what they like, and that $#@% you comment wasnt that nice either. It just wasnt necessary, this is one of the few boards where people talk civilly and my IQ doesnt have to drop a few points -_- Cept with Kishi and Bleys posts, but they still rock :p

You like rap, someone else doesnt and you dont like anime and i do...whats the point?
