Wal-Mart is going to kill music one day.

Please forgive me mods, I posted this originally at FG, so there'll be swearing, but luckily the censorship will catch it. xD

Ok, I was listening to the radio and on this talk show, they were discussing about how Wal-Mart is going to kill the music industry. But, first, allow me what Wal-Mart is doing.

You know you can get music at any Wal-Mart for about ten dollars. Which is cheap and affordable. But the music that you buy at Wal-Mart is never the same kind you'd find at a local music store where the same CD would be about twice the price of that Wal-Mart is selling. Also what's wrong is that Wal-Mart sells editted CDs, and they often don't sell certain artists, like Eminem and most rap artists considered "hardcore." Wal-Mart sells these editted CDs for 10 dollars. They buy the CDs for 12 dollars, but sell them for $10, which would mean them losing money for selling under the price of purchase. But, don't get me wrong, Wal-Mart is not losing money because of this, as they make most of their money on other stuff rather than on music.

Now, Wal-Mart wants the music industry to sell their stuff to them for 10 dollars rather than $12 dollars, and if the music industry doesn't comply, Wal-Mart is going to stop selling editted music CDs.

Now, why would this kill music? Well, at most places in the US, there is always a Wal-Mart, and usually, that's where people will buy music. Because it's cheap and affordable. And $10 dollars is really cheap. Not only that, but most people who purchase music at Wal-Mart will have the crappy editted version, which the artists usually don't want the consumers to buy. Wal-Mart is going to sell the editted crap at a cheap price, to the point where it can drive out local music competition in the smaller stores.

What's also ed up, besides the music thing, since Wal-Mart is going to sell "editted" crap no one really wants to hear, they sell movies and video games, usually rated and "uneditted." Which is ing stupid. But that's not the point. The point is that Wal-Mart ing sucks that they might kill the music industry, because the music industry relies heavily on Wal-Mart to spread music across America, yet Wal-Mart doesn't really need music to make a profit.

What do you want me to do about it?
Because I honestly don't think that I have an answer for you right now.

I could care less. Let the music industry die. Its too ed up a buracratic as it is. They don't listen to people or care about them. They didn't try to make MP3s and online music sellable. They tried to kill it ONLY when music sales went down. Then they tried to kill and they declined worse. They have no clue what they are doing and if it dies then it will eventually get revived again but with people with a vision and those that are smart. These people suck.

Well, that's not what I'm really concerned. I'm more concerned about what Wal-Mart is doing, because this will eventually kill of competition with the small stores that sell uneditted music at a more "expensive" price than Wal-Mart.

Well then the music industry will just have to say no or the artists will have to take a stand. One or the other. People have to step up to Wal-Mart and tell them how it is going to be. If Wal-Mart stops selling music then imagine how many complaints THEY will get. After people can't get their music then they will shop else where. K-Mart, Target and other places and then Wal-Mart may lose customers.

Wal-Mart shouldn't have its way and I don't think they will.

A majority of Wal-Mart's Cd's are not edited, and when they are, the Cd is marked as edited. How this helps the problem I don't know, but I can honestly say most of my friends don't buy music from Wal-Mart.

I can't say it will affect me too much because the type of CDs I listen to are put out by companies like Deutsch Grammophon and Walmart or any other company'd have no reason to edit them, most don't even have lyrics after all. As far as the repercussions of this, I can't really say what I'd like to see happen, I'm just not involved in either side enough to have it really effect me.

First off, a lot of people don't WANT edited music, so they'll pay the extra few bucks to get the unedited versions.

Secondly, I've seen more edited cds at Target than at Wal-Mart.

Also, I don't think this is really going to kill the music business, but if it did, I feel the same about that as ed. Even if there was damage done, music itself, real music, good music, will never die.

Actually, both my parents work at Wal Mart, and yes, they are. Did you not all hear about Wal Mart getting sued recently over the unedited Evanescence CD that slipped through somehow?

No, I don't think Wal Mart is going to kill the music industry: I think bitchy people who want the world to raise their kids for them already started killing it along time ago.

These industrys only sell popular already bands new people cant get a break and with this power they can say whay goes now, Im not kidding when I say bands have changed songs and titles for them.

Saying that Wal-Mart is going to kill the music industry is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. I just don't see how that would possibly happen. I can't even think of anyone I know who buys music at Wal-Mart except for my stepmom, and that's 'cause she works there.

Well, let's see. Most places in the midwest don't have a Best Buy or some store that sells music only, and Wal-Mart is cheap. Besides, if they do make the music industry to sell their CDs at $10.

When the price of the CD drops down to $10, everyone loses out.

Supermarkets in the U.K, namely Asda (owned by Walmart) sell C.D's at a reduced price but this will not signal the death of the music industry. I agree with those who ask, who actually buys music from the supermarket? No one I know. The real danger for the music business is still the illegal distribution of files over the internet.

This is actually incorrect. This year for the first time saw a rise in album sales. In the UK, Album sales hit record amounts this year. Also the introduction of sites such as iTunes and legal Napster has brought about the download chart which has proved to be a massive success.

The music industry is not going anywhere. They simply adapt, and carry on with business. Those of you who talk about the death of the music industry bringing about some revolution where great music will make a come back are misguided. How are the record companies supposed to promote "real music" if they go out of business. Don't expect anything to chancge drastically until the next technological improvement in music forces it too.

Some of you, because you are smart enough to use a computer, really understimate how much white trash depends on Wal-Mart. Trust me, far more people buy all of their music at Wal-Mart, and that number will probablly only go up.

You can buy the entire albums at iTunes for $10, full unedited versions at that.

Yeah but you don't get to own the CD, the inlay, the lyrics etc. Personally I prefer to have a physical CD collection. Also that $10 doesn't include distribution, packaging, retailing mass production etc so the music companies get more for your $10.

Mom&Pop Grocery Stores aren't the only one suffering. Wal-Mart is by far the largest grocery distributor in the US with their Supercenters. I hate those Supercenters. You can't find what you're looking for without walking for hours.

I don't see a problem with the undedited versions for people who don't want to hear those words or have children they don't want hearing words; howerver, it strikes me as odd that they wouldn't sell both the edit and unedited version. Best of both worlds? I guess because the people who enjoy the unedited version would it see it as not being moral. Soccer Mom Boycott of DOOM.

Then again, Wal*Mart sells rated R movies. It seems a little hypocritical to me. =o

About the Evanescence suit - A while back, when I wasn't allowed to listen to unedited version of song ( yes, my parents were that uptight ), I could only buy my CDs from Wal*Mart and had picked up a copy of NickelBack ( shush, I liked them at one point ). The very first song had the F bomb there but no advisory sticker. Does anyone know if that caused and uprise as well? O_O;

The hell are you talking about. Best Buys are scattered every where in the midwest. Maybe not in the middle of farm country where there are literally towns of 100 people. But they are around quiet a bit. Quite possibly my favorite store.

This is actually incorrect. This year for the first time saw a rise in album sales. In the UK, Album sales hit record amounts this year. Also the introduction of sites such as iTunes and legal Napster has brought about the download chart which has proved to be a massive success.

I don't live in the UK. So I could give a damn about what ever the UK is doing. If I remember correctly the Music Industry out there didn't do the same thing as the RIAA over here. Over here the first 2 years Napster was out sale increased a lot and saw record years. Since they started to crack down and do something about it has not reached even that level again but continued to decline until this past year when apple and others(NOT the music industry) started to sell music online. Still is not as good as the days of file sharing but maybe it will get there. They did not embrace change and tried to kill it. Only when people with vision came in and spent a lot their own money to get this up an running with out any help from the music industry. They originally tried to get blank cassette tapes outlawed because people could record music off the radio.

Also I don't really listen to music. The only music I listen to is not produced by the RIAA and is not even American. I like Europian and Japanese music a lot more because I find more of it has a techno tone to it. The crash of the music industry here will not affect me one bit.

I hate Walmart with a burning passion, but I hate the people who sue Walmart even more, who force Walmart to be this way. Parents sueing Walmart for Evanescence's cover of Korn's Thoughtless (they dropped the f-bomb a few times there) is just plain STUPID.

I've been mad at Walmart ever since I picked up the edited CD of System of a Down's Steal this Album! accidently. :mad2:

If I recall correctly, this is illegal. Something about antitrust law, I think.

Not that that makes a lot of difference, as if the government under the Bush administration would *actually* go after a business for breaking trust law.

If you went to a store and looked, a majority of them won't have the ED on the tag because they don't need it.

Yeah I'm tired of Walmart and there evil monopoly ways.IF you want to see a good example of a rising monopoly look at WalMart.Shoot once there isn't any competition in a small town mainly small businesses.WalMart's prices goes up and the quality goes down.Though there are other massive merchants.They can barely compete against WalMart.If they could then you'd see a Target built right next to a Walmart then.I think etierh Target is owned by WalMart or Target doesn't wanna step up and compete with Walmart.Cuz if they did then things would be a lot better for small towns,etc.

Well you don't remember correctly. The BPI took exactly the same stance as RIAA on illegal file sharing.

So are you saying Apple one day just decided they were going to sell music online. No. To do so they need the record companies that own the tracks to license companies like Apple to sell them, otherwise it is illegal. So it's safe to say third party aggregators wishing to sell music online needed record company involvement.

The thing I agree with you on is that the music industry did try to kill file downloading, like they did blank casettes, like they did blank C.D's and I'm sure they will do so again in the future because they are arrogant people who don't learn.

The fact is they once again are adapting. Check out the RIAA website for correct statistics. 1997 saw the original release of Napster and saw dollar value sales and unit sales down in the States by 2.4% and 6.5% repsectively. These figures then fluxuated ending on an upward trend by the year 2000, I found no evidence of the record sales that you suggest. Then the figures drop rather drastically. The reason these figures dropped can be partly attributed to illegal filesharing and partly attributed to the subsidised music available at supermarkets, of course there are other factors at work here. The fact is the RIAA has recorded profit increases over the last two years, the first time in 5 years they have achieved back to back increase, further proof that the music industry is in no danger whatsoever.

Whether its illegal filesharing or subsidised music at supermarkets, the music industry will inevitably prevail.

That's America's problem. In Europe we buy at HMV or Fopp and in Australia there's HMV and JB Hi-Fi. Bad words and all! :p

I've had KoRn's Untouchables since it came out, and I've heard the cover by Evanescence...it's not bad, pretty neat to hear someone cover it, much more a woman singing in the place of Johnathan Davis with somewhat of a dark elegance to the opening of the song.

But yeah, these people have been out to get me all my life, and they continue to attack everything I like. :(

If they think "omgz solo amy lee" is evil for saying rape, whore (she said it on another song), and dropping the f-bomb, than I think they need to go search for their kids stash of hidden Eminem CDs.

Seriously, those are all just words. I'd be more concerned about what those kids are doing when the parents aren't around.

EDIT: And I don't think the cover is stupid. :o I think the people moaning it's evil are stupid.

What really gets me is no one will gripe at Christina or Britney for lyrics that are around the same level of not for 5 year olds, or worse. Personally none of those lyrics bother me, but for Yevon's sake, if you care about your kid hearing the word "ass" "whore" or "boob", look at what you're buying them...we shouldn't all have to suffer just because you don't want to pay attention to what your kid is doing, but rather have the world do it for you. :mad2:

Of course, Wal Mart is "family oriented", so nothing unsuitable for your 5 year old could be in there, right? :)

And I agree with everything you said there. And this really is a big part of all the problems, these parents who don't want to take the time to raise their own kids. Whenever something bad happens (school shootings, pre-teens killing each other, etc.) everyone points the finger at TV, music, and video games. Of course, no parent is going to raise a perfect child, and every child makes their mistakes and goes through rough stages while growing up, but you have to at least play a part in your child's life to help them along the way. You can't just sit around whining for this and that to be banned; that does no good. People wonder what's wrong with kids these days, well, this is what's wrong.

Okay, what walmart are you guys shopping at with editted and Unedditted CD's? i have never EVER seen an unedited cd in there. The other thing is, you've got to remember you can only get so much music at walmart. that's where the Plan 9's of the world will always win out (Plan 9 = kickass local music place. 3 stories, 1 of cd's, 1 of used cd's, tapes and videos, 1 entirely of records in teh basement. tis much rockness.) Plan 9 has everything. edited, un edited, used, only copied once by a band that only lasted a week. if it has ever been put to plastic, it's in there. walmart has top 40 and some country and classic rock to please the hillbillies. so yeah, music does NOT depend on walmart. pop music depends on walmart. can you dig that, SUCKA!

Every Wal-Mart I've been to in 5 states has had both edited and unedited CDs.

And Wal-Mart almost never carries rap albums. So anyone looking for a rap album in a place where Wal-Mart is the only place to get a CD will lose out.

This article quotes a Rolling Stone issue stating that one in every five CD's purchased in the U.S.A come from Wal-Mart. So this is for the people that think no one buys CD's from there. In the words of Chris Rock, "It's like cocaine, everyone's doin' it but they sure as hell ain't gonna admit to it."

If a company isn't compeating with its near rivals it cannot be considered to be in the same market, therefore it is less likely to be a super market but a local grocery store, which is reality is tottally different from a supermarket.

Wal-Mart will never kill music, but unfortunately, I don't think W-M will have the decency to die, either. You're right about other mega-corporations sticking mostly to their own turf and not taking on Wal-Mart too much.

Discrepancies like these are not uncommon. Remember, outlets will have their differences, even in the same state. Hell, even in the same city sometimes. My local W-M carries almost nothing except pop and rap (not much hardcore rap), and most of it is censored--the unedited is practically never in stock. I got lucky once and found a Tool CD there, all by itself, uncensored. I also came up about 50 cents short on tax three times straight, so I don't go there much anymore. (I know the tax was my fault, but still.) In short, if you find some good music at Wal-Mart, consider yourself lucky and grab it quick before W-M CEOs notice it and take a hammer to it.

I guess you could chalk my local walmart's reluctance to carry both edit and uned CD's to the fact that i live in VA. mechanicsville va. The most conservative place on earth, bar George Bush's Ranch.

I have shopped at Wal-Mart before, but only for legos. And I emphasize ONLY.

Although Wal-Mart's grocery prices are low, I go to the other low-price grocery store(even though I work for Safeway). Wal-Mart, despite what its CEO says, is one of the worst places to work. Hundreds of thousands have sued Wal-Mart based on unpaid OT, low wages, and harrassment.

It's about as evil as you can get in this world without being truly evil. Cashiers at Wal-Mart barely start off past minimum wage. When I worked at Safeway, cashiers started at $9.10 in Maryland. Minimum wage is $5.15 in Maryland. Wal-Mart should primarily be based for teenage workers still in HS, not adults who have to support their kids. And they even have a greeter. Seriously, a greeter? I feel sorry for the guy/girl who has to stand at the door 8 hours a day greeting people.

I have an old scary man in my Walmart as a greeter. :(

Okay I could agree that Wal-Mart might become a communist faction if given enough power. As I like Wal-Mart and am a socialist at heart. Infact on an ideolouge test I got most of all my fricking points on 'leninist". (Canadians will get that one..)

Most of my friends are from Canada, us and Wal-Mart and Kong will rule you!
