the future of the royal family
Well, their reputation certainly isn't in a good way right now. I trust Charles and company will be able to beat some sense of history into Harry, though.
EDIT: No, really, I do hope he gets a literal beating for this.
I like Britain. I have no problem with it, except that for some reason, a very few British people (not even just British people, but other countries in general) think EVERYONE in America is obese and mentally incapacitated.
But besides that, I like Britain. Some of my favourite actors and actresses are British and a lot of my friends from EoFF are British. I love the accents. :)
I'm british but I don't think the many wars we have haplessly joined have help our reputation very much, but many old world countries probably still consider us in high regard, even if we don't deserve it :)
Britian is okay...I guess. The royal family doesn't do anything as far as I am concerned. To my knowledge everything is about the parlament. I say get rid of the royal family because they are freeloading off your $$$
I dont like Britian because they followed the US into Iraq, but i do like Britain because they put pressure on Israel.
the Monarchy charges 1 pound a year, thats not exorting really, and it stops Tony Blair from being a president and having total power so its a bargin, besides just because you dont see it doesnt mean its not there, the monarchy is very busy unlike the government they just dont declare everything they do.
But I wish the Queen would stop Tony from his love affair with bush and his wars, As for the Nazi thing, I dont really care, some people have to much time on there hands for things to scream about every person does.
They need a hobby per say...
I think people in the US tend to like Britain. Maybe not the more ignorant Americans, since you're foreigners and therefore most likely terr'rists.
Personally, I still think that the Monarchy is a good thing, we pay very little towards it, and the amount of money we get from the tourism because of the royal family is immense (if you ever go to Central London, around St James Park you'll know what I mean).
The reason I made this thread is all about Prince Harry. I can't believe he would wear a Swastika, even though he may end up being King one day.
i'm british and i don't really like it! i don't like the british arrogence. its so annoying! like saying "we won the war" what!! no YOU didn't. the poor sods that died did...grrrr *sits down for a while*
sorry
i think that the british steryotype is funny!!! do many people see us as bridgett jones people???they all had such silly accents!! i don't know ANYONE that talk like that1!! but i suppose i live in farmer land...they all say "ohhhhhhhh aaaaaarrrrr!! the mooouuuurrr!"
*sigh*
anyway!! if i wasn't british i'd see the country as arogant and big headed! but i know that they're not all like that!! it's just the current government!! *kicks tony blair in the bum and rule supreme!!* ;) :D ;) heehee
I kind of agree, really. I get annoyed occasionally when I watch American TV programs, and the Brits have really posh accents...and bad teeth. I'll have you know my teeth are as good as anyone's and I couldn't talk posh if I tried.
Apparently a lot of people here aren't even aware of the matter of Harry's incredible historical ignorance.
Try 2 million, and that is just for the Queen.Quote:

Britain is a fallen star, if you ask me. We were once the most powerful nation on the Earth, but upon the start of the 20th Century, Britain began to decline. After holding back Germany from advancing west in both World Wars (Which was part of the war being won - without Britain's resistance Germany would have taken the whole of Europe, meaning that the Allies could not have launched an assault and liberated it) and taking part in the liberation of the US, Britain pretty much fell into decline even further, and has become a puppet of the US.
And now we have that moron Blair in power, whose sycophantic government and faceless civil servants seem keen to destroy all British heritage and declaring it racist. It is the final nail in the coffin of a once proud nation.
Yeah. I figured but like I said, to my knowledge everything was the parlament. Good to hear that they do a lot of stuff but I don't really hear about it as I live in America and the news doesn't report on things outside the boarder unless it directly effects us.Quote:

And many of you are not gonna like this statement but if we didn't hold back the Germans, they would of not only taken over all of Europe, they would of concentrated on Russia, defeated them (because they would of invaded before the cold Siberian winter), then they would have made Japan their little milirtary puppet, and who knows where they could of gone from their? They probably would of defeated North Africa, Asian islands that Japan occupied, and you never know, without Allied help, they could of successfully invaded a little country I like to call the USA.
All that is enough to make me proud to be British.
1 pound a year, its not that much at all. I hate the sterotype where we all have those accents, NOBODY speaks like that!
Besides if the monarchy are evil racist nazi's how many small middle east countries have they decemated recently?
I'll be honest, I'm not happy with Britain at the moment. I feel that they hate Americans. I feel the same way about Canada and the rest of Europe. I'm not being racist (please don't think I am, I'm not, please). I'm just very hurt. People can have their say about our government, but I wish they would stop blaming the citizens themselves. I wish we would all stop fighting.
Not that its been splashed over every newspaper for the last few days over here, but in reality I don't see why he should have to make a second public apology, firstly hes German anyway so he has the right to do that, but mainly he was drunk when he picked the costume and it was a last minute thing, I think the public apology he gave was good enough and now the royal family can deal with it privitly and probably hang him, but they don't need every single person telling them what to do really.Quote:

edit-weren't the Nazi's competing with Japan for Russia?I dunno but i do know Japan invaded Russia in WW2 also.
Being German does not make you a Nazi. Nazism had nothing to do with Germany itself, it was just a political party. Also, do you really believe he picked it when he was drunk, or whether it was just a cover-up spouted by the Palace's press office?Quote:

Take care all.
I think their accents are cool...my friend hates all British people for some reason or another though...well, just about all Europeans in general...or so he says, but I doubt he does, he just enjoys pissing me off.
But most of the people around here think the British are all evil pussies who need to be killed for a bunch of senseless reasons, mainly the one Doomgaze mentioned:

What do I think of the English? Oh, I'll TELL you what I think of the English...
Anyways, all joking aside, many Americans like the English, though the comments about Blair do seem to be prevalent here as well. America enjoys many things from England, such as Harry Potter, for example, and they are rather staunch allies of America, so I'd say we get along well with them.
Yeah no one talks crap about hte english.Heck somepeople here like to do fake british accents.Heck my cousin here went to england for 2 days came back to oklahoma. and tried to use a fake british accent.Saying that he picked it up within his 2 days visit.Man we made fun of him for being so stupid.lol
I dont really like their lapdog leader.-.- i dont even think ppl in britain like him either.
On another note i am having a problem with a british friend saying everything American people see and believe in being not well informed enough just because its in america, its true to an extent but he is taking it too far and just is prejudiced(which is kinda understandable, every country does not like america for the most part). But alot of em on BBSs have been doing that lately -_-; So meh they are fine, i just wish some would be more respectful =/
I think both America and Britain stereotypes of each other are completely pointless.
Most Britons think all American's are fat, greedy (food and money), stupid and every American thinks they rule the world, and I'm guessing most Americans think that we speak very posh, drink tea, are are extremly arrogant.
I do find it quite funny though that America's greatest friend (the TV) was invented in my home town (Hastings) and many Americans seem to think that the TV was their invention.
I think Brits are wonderful, and most of them have a great sense of humor. On the subject of Harry's party costume, perhaps it was a bit shocking; but he wasn't dressed as Chancellor Hitler himself, just as a Nazi soldier. I ask, would it have been thought of as offensive to Mexicans if he had dressed as a Spanish Conquistador? What about other historical tyrants like Julius Ceasar and Napoleon, their costumes are quite popular. Much ado about nothing in my opinion.
I can't speak of the world idea of Britain, but I can speak what my friends (portuguese) think of the british and of the Britain...
1 - Britain (as country)
- Cold
- Rain weather
- Pretty evoluted
- Another world totally different wiht money
2 - The British
- Also extremely cold
- Red hair
- And some have a strange pronounce called 'london british'
3 - British royalty
- Diana - Pitty that she died... they liked her
- Prince Charles - No opinion
- Prince Harry - A guy with no brains
- Prince William - the charity guy
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now MY opinion about Britain, british, etc
1 - Britain (as a country)
- Cold and rainy but what the f* it has to rain, ok?
- Also another world totally different, but much better than Lisbon... The money... well... for some historical events I better not speak to much, but if D. Joăo V, king of Portugal when we discovered gold in Brasil) didn't spend all the money, we could be a rich country...
2 - British (the people)
- British guys (some) are really really really cute...
- They aren't cold, from the people that I've talked to, they are much friendly with me, than my real-life friends... And a friend of mine told me 'Yeah, but don't give two kisses in the face of each other when they met'... HELLO? Do I need to give two kisses ina face to a strange person, or to my friends? Why don't just they say 'Hi'...
- Some have red hair, but I'm used to that...
3 - British royalty
- Princess Diana - I loved her... when she died, I was a kid and I just cried, coz I liked her really a lot...
- Prince Charles - The soon-of-a-****, killed her and he's hanging with that horrible of Camila...
- Prince Harry - Nothing in those brains, if he has some....
- Prince William - He reminds me a lot Diana, when I look at a pic of him, I look at him and he reminds me a lot Diana.
So, see? Britain is not that bad... actually I really enjoy live there!
By the way:(SPOILER)British jokes aren't fun... Come to Portugal and we'll talk about jokes....
Scotland is traditionally the home of red hair :)
I know hardly any red-heads.
And yes our humour is second to none.
Britain is just a very rich country in my opinion :greenie: But I've heard it's really rainy and downright miserable sometimes. I love some British words!!! Like "plonker" and "sod" and "manky" <-- I have no idea how to spell that one. I think the British accent is a silly stereotype. -.- Yesh. Silly stereotype.
I think what P. Harry did was a stupid thing; the newspapers are freaking out on that picture. It definitely wasn't a nice thing, and I don't think another apology will hurt. He's always getting into trouble, eh?
I like Britain and the Brits and footy and all, but sometimes when I read my history textbooks, I don't like them much. But those are just moments, and sometimes when I read my history textbooks, I like them very much.
Try putting 'great french victories' into google ;)
Edit: aww it used to correct it to Read French military defeats...
Ok British has some sense of humour but not that great... special for jokes... But u have much more red hair in Britain than here in Portugal...
In my opinion British humour is better than any other countries.
And yes, us Brits were out of order in the past, we used to have wars with the French for fun, but that's all changed now...
Yup; past is past. But I think most people fought with the French
German did....
A little known fact is that technically, Britain is still at war with France, the 100 years happened about 600 years ago, but France and Britian NEVER signed a decleration of peace or a ceasefire.
So if we started attacking France, there's nothing the UN could do about it.
british humour is the best!! i mean monty python, faulty towers, ab fab, blackadder, MR BEAN!!!! etc etc!!
the whole harry thing...bit silly but i think that an apoligy is all that needs to be done. although it wasn't a good move.
i still don't like the british arrogence. i'm part german and i get really upset that some people talk about germans as evil nazis. at school i wasn't able to talk about my family and their history because of where they'e from. instead i had to talk about my irish side. i was bullied and called alot of horrid names. i know that many british are not this shallow but it hurts. my grandma didn't ask hitler to be a nutter.
oh and plus i think that british people are less interested in the royal family then the rest of the world. although whats happening to dianas letters is discusting that back stabbing butler.
Ok Mr. Bean... only and some British humour are good, but portuguese is even better....
What!!!! You fool what ever tom its me callumQuote:

Does anyone honestly believe that is going to change if Blair is voted out. I don't think so. Michael Howard is a weak weak man with wild economical ideas that will probably leave England in a Thatcheresque ruin. And who's the other guy? Charles Kennedy is it, of the Liberal "Token" Democrats? Blair isn't the problem, Bush is. If Blair goes a new puppet will come along.Quote:

There's nothing wrong with Blair, we just use him as a scapegoat, he has actually done a lot for this country, more than Bush has done for the USA.

Same for giving the Bank of England being given control of Interest Rates - first they heard of it was when Gordon Brown announced it.
His Government have raised taxes substantially in order to throw money at the NHS, which has in fact become worse since Labour took power. The hospitals are dirty and the waiting times are horrendous - not to mention people from all over the world come here to claim asylum purely because the NHS is free. Another reason why the NHS has been harmed under the Labour Government is through its sheer obsession with targets. Patients are often rushed through in order to meet numbers.
Not only are the tax and health policies a shambles, let us also not forget foreign policy. I'm not just talking about being George W. Bushes' poodle, but the way in which the Government has allowed the EU to walk all over us, imposing sanctions on us without even trying to restrict them. And then their sheer determination to get Britain to accept the EU constitution (For Tony Blair's own ambitions to become President of Europe, when such a position is created) that when the referendum will be held, Labour have suggested that ALL European Union citizens will be allowed to vote on an issue that affects Britain alone - interestingly none of the other countries are planning on doing this for their referendums on the same issue.
Don't even get me started on their appalling immigration and crime policies, among other things...
the whole hospital thig is really stupid. i had to have braces when i was younger. the NHS had me on their list for 2 years (!!!!!!! :mad2: ) and then just sent a letter saying i wasn't an emergency case. i ended up going private (and still am....damn retainer) its costing a fortune because of blair and his hospital BS.Quote:

Yeah, the hospital thing is a joke. The good thing about the Conservatives is that they are offering subsidies for people to go private - people can choose to go quicker (thus speeding up the NHS too) for a subsidised fee.Quote:

British poltics are more interesting than American politics.
I know Labour haven't been great, but education is getting better, violent crime is actually going down (it's petty crimes that have gone up), the 2012 Olympics will be great if we get them, and what our forces have been doing in Israel is brilliant.Quote:

On the other hand the NHS is a joke, drugs are on the increase, and what we helping the USA doing is stupid.
Wait, boris, I'm confused. Why did you have to go to that place for braces? Couldn't you have just got them at a dentist in the first place?
Then again, I'm looking at it like an American. We don't get hospital services for free. We have to go to the doctor or the hospital and always pay.
you have to get the nhs to give the go ahead. plus the dentistsi go to cannot do braces. you have to get on a list coz i was going to have it done at a hospital...it all got confussing!!!Quote:

lol YOu know in all my life being in the USA I've never once been to New York City.Heck the closest I've been to NYC is Boston.I've been everywhere else like Alaska(literally all over alaska).WEll I basicly been almost to every state except for montanna and new mexico. But I always wonder what NYC is like then someone told me it stinks so it never cross3ed my mind again.
I think NYC is beautiful. I like the people in the more urban parts of NY better too. There may be more violence in those parts, but they aren't all snobby and annoying like people in the suburbs.
There's no place quite like NYC. On any given day, on any given street, at any given time, you can see anything, from the beautiful and unique, to the horrible and violent. New York certainly does have an edge about it, and folks who aren't from the area often feel as if the people in the city can be harsh or even mean-spirited, but you'll encounter that anywhere to be frank. Deep down, New Yorkers have as big a heart as any and when push comes to shove, they mean well. Most of the time, we're just in such a rush that we can't engage in conversations but instead must just grunt hellos such as:
"Hey"
"How you doin?"
and the like.
To jump back on topic, having encountered people from all over the world, I am often struck by the pace of the language that is spoken. New Yorkers and Long Islanders especially, are known to be quick talkers, and it becomes more evident with every encounter. I've noticed that in some cases, people from England actually embrace our fast talking and can quickly adapt their ears to understand how we speak and vice versa. I'm not sure as to how or why, perhaps it's due entirely to the people I've met, but it seems that the English have somehow mastered the melting pot technique when it comes to language.
Also, Jess, the reason you and I both keep seeing those darned commercials for the stadium is because it's beginning to become a real hot button issue. Building the stadium would displace literally thousands of families and would probably congest traffic even further since the construction would take several years and would not be an easily reached work place. The reasons TO build the stadium range mostly in the all but guaranteed revenue it would bring in, both for the sports games played there and also, on the off chance NY does get the Olympics, it would serve as our main stadium for all the opening and closing ceremonies.
In my honest opinion, I don't think NY needs the Olympics or should have it, I think either France or London would be better choices, but it seems like everything is falling into place for the Olympics to hit the Big Apple.
I think I've talked about everything except for the point of this thread, and for that, I apologize greatly.
Take care all.
Britian is like America...except better. Although the fact that Tony Blair would be willing to follow our dumb-dumb leader into war worries me a bit, at least he didn't start it.
lol I dont liv ein the suburbs but I do live in oklahoma citywith about only 1 million people as its population. The closest thing to suburbia here is Edmound and Moore. All teh other towns that surround okc are actually towns lol. They call it the metro area because they are so damn close to each other. its a 100 mile radius over alll. But oklahoma city itself ain't that big.lol I liked LA south central better. They have nice blvds.,.Quote:

What do I think of Britain? I admit that I don't know a lot about the British, but the mere fact that they are a constitutional monarchy... eh, sounds outdaded/wrong to me. I also understand they have a lot of socialistic policies in place. I prefer America for that reason, but then, Britain's weather and landscape is beautiful.
Oh, and to the person who likes the monarchy so that Tony Blair won't be ultimate ruler: Bush is not our ultimate ruler, and in a constitutional republic neither would Blair (ideally). xD I don't think you should be too concerned.
What does the monarchy actually do?
Even though im not necessarily fond of the british i would have to say i respect them more than any other country
I liked Britain when I went there 7 years ago. very pretty country. People were exceptionally rude to me when I was speaking with my native accent. when I spoke with the accent of the area, I had no problems whatsoever and the people were very friendly. sound like an american, though, and wow! exceptionally rude.
But that was only in England. Scotland was orders of magnitude better. many orders of magnitude better. Scotland is so much better, in fact, that England barely registers on the scale anymore. Once people realize this, I think everybody will be happier. so what if I descend from a Highland clan? Though, I must say, the food in Ireland is better than that in Scotland and England put together.
Didn't like New York, though. too many people. too dirty. got ripped off. negative feelings about NYC. Sorry Cap. I love all those movies where NYC gets destroyed. No bearing on the Captain whatsoever, but I didn't like New York.

I don't like the Conservatives that much in general, and prefer to lean towards the Lib-Dems, but it's the Euro thing that puts me off the Lib Dems.Quote:

People blew the swastika thing way out of proportion. Of course he shouldnt have worn it But the fact is he apologised sincerley straight away and hes most likely getting a punishment of sorts which wil probably be studying the whole swastika and holocaust events in detail. What else do you want, Blood? Ignore the question mark cause you're not getting it. To call that the future of the British monarchy is a pretty half assed view. Lets face it, theres NO WAY Harrys gonna be king. Odds are 1,000,000 to 1.
You are correct, the Greens have never got into the British Parliament, the only time I'd recommend voting for any party outside the big 3 is in European elections, as the Greens have got MEPs into there.Quote:

Interestingly, Labour only got 40% or so of the vote last time, and the Conservatives got 30%, and I think the Lib Dems got just under 20%. However, Labour got 60% of the MPs, Con got 20% and Lib Dems got 10%. We have a very unrepresentative system, which makes voting for the lesser parties a wasted vote, whereas in elections for the European and Scottish Parliaments, and Northern Ireland and Welsh assemblies, the votes are proportional, so your vote will mean something. I think the Pensioners' Party once got an MP to the Scottish Parliament
What I'd do, if I wanted Labour out and I was in a Labour-held constituency was look at who came second behind them last time, and vote for them. And here, and generally throughout the Midlands where I live, the only party that looks like being able to get anywhere near Labour are the Conservatives.
Where I live, in Hastings on the south coast, Labour get almost every vote, it's unbeilievable how many people vote Labour here. I think Hastings had one of the biggest land-slide results out oif the whole country in the last general election.
What makes things even harder for us is that we live practically next door to our MP.
