All in all, I thought Bush covered a wide variety of topics that needed addressing and on the whole, I thought this was one of his better speeches.
The ovations for the Iraqi voter and parents of the US Soldier were particularly moving too.

Bush... what a creative man. He uses negative images to convey emotions of fear through the people, making it seem like we're still in danger and he is our only salvation... If only that were true, then I wouldn't mind having him in office, but what is true, is that he is the danger.
I didn't see it, so I'm not quite sure what all he said. I'll have to look around and see if I can't scrounge something up.
I spent 5 minutes watching it. Only because there's a tv in the kitchen and only because it took me 5 minutes to finish my dinner.
*yawn* @ Bush.. yeah yeah yeah.. "talking it over in N. Korea" and killing more terrorists.. yada yada.. >_> I'd rather read the paper the day after than actually watch him talk about it.
I'm too tired to get into the whole thing, but I will say that I fully support Bush's proposed social security reform.

I lost my opinion in bush. Mind you, it was a negative one, but I honestly dont really give a damn anymore. I watched the first half of it, and then ate some icecream. When you start eating icecream, thats when you know you lost your interest

I'm not saying that Bush is a Nazi, but I am saying that you shouldln't let fear clould your judgement of your leaders' actions.
No talk of Bin Laden??? Maybe hes stopped caring. Anyways he turned the audience into cheerleaders, that stood and clapped so they wouldnt appear to be non-supportive of Iraqs recent vote. I doubt anybody was actually moved or unaware of anything he said. IT was all politics.

Though it's been common pratice to see a lot of those clapping breaks during the State of the Union, I got a kick out of hearing the Democrats shout "No!" at Bush when he was talking about Social Security Reform.

I am repeatedly amazed at how often Bush will say the exact opposite of what he really means. Of course, if he said what he really meant (like "My party has been plotting to destroy Social Security for decades because the Democrats came up with it and it works") then he wouldn't be very popular.
I watched about a third of it; I couldn't stomach any more of it. I was repulsed by how he used that dead soldier's family for political gain. Granted, that was virtually the end of the speech, which was good for him, because if it hadn't been, I'd probably have turned off the television in disgust.

Social Security will no longer be a viable entity within 15 years anyways because there's a huge mass of American population that will be of the age to retire and start drawing their money from Social Security and it will be unable to fund them. <-- unrelated note.
didn't catch it, all State of the Anything addresses are boring and usually fairly repetitive anyways so I don't feel I missed much. Only president I was actually able to pay any attention to whatsoever was Regan, which is really saying something given I was a very small child when he was in power. It was the height of political lies but he could make you think he really cared about what he was saying and was speaking directly to you. Actors make as good of presidents as anybody else. better probably because they're better at lying. :D
No, the administrators of Social Security saw this coming and set up a trust fund so Soc Sec would have reserves to be able to pay full benefits to all retirees through at least 2040 at which point the balance should start shifting back again.Quote:

It's simple for me - Bush can STFU about "fiscal responsiblity" and go stuff any and all of his 150 proposed reforms because the defense budget is now 419 billion dollars a year, not including the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq, which in order to not turn this into a war thread, I will simply label as ineffective. Education is not an priority, let's deflate or simply erase 50 education programs, but spending more and more money in Iraq in a losing effort is a priority?
Simple, real simple. If he really cared about turning around this deficit, which this year is a new record for America, breaking Bush's old record he set last year, he would stop spending well over a billion dollars a day on such an unnecessarily large military. And how he can wave around the military as such a huge priority and then call for a cut on veteran's benefits is a flagrant, disgusting act of hypocrisy. If any Democrats had any guts (I'm looking at j00, Barbara Boxer) they would stand up and call this cro-mag on all of his BS.
I can't wait for these next four years to be over with so we can be assured we will never, ever have to deal with this incompetent, war-mongering monkey as President ever again. In four years he has turned this country into an embarassment and the laughing stock of the whole world, let alone bankrupting it, leaving his mistakes as a mess for my generation to clean up. That's true, BTV, however, Kerry still could have dominated the election had he opposed the war in Iraq and told the real truth about what Bush is in Iraq for. Judging by the way the democrats acted, it seems like they wanted to lose. With the minimal effort the put into it, they certainly deserved to.
Not Dean. He did the opposite. He opposed the war and said we were getting out. He thought the war was wrong and that we have no right to be over there in the first place. I wish Dean had won...now he will just be the DNC head guy. Which is good because he can lead the party and help out building up local and state governments a bit more as the Dems have been falling behind there greatly.
Yes, I think Dean could have been a contender, it's a shame the Democrats weren't willing to gamble with an edgier candidate.
I think he would have won had the primaries been held all on the same day. I hate how some piss ant little state gets to pretty much decide who wins...with a cacuas at that. Then everyone else just votes what they vote to go with the crowd. If you are from that state and you are offened then GOOD!

Well thats better than pulling more money out of SS and investing in Enron. And cutting Veterans benefits, the same Veterans that fought when this country asked, and some from this recent Iraqi conflict. I don't think withdrawing all troops would be a prudent measure; it would probably just end up creating another Afghanistan.

That's the thing: We did exactly that in Afghanistan. After attempting, and grievously failing, to set things right there, we pulled all our troops out, and it just became a breeding ground for terrorists who hated the U.S. because we did what amounted to a hit-and-run there. That's a good part of the reason why 9/11 happened, and I can guarantee you we'd be complete idiots if we made that mistake again (although, seeing as we've made so many other mistakes again lately, it wouldn't exactly be an unprecedented event). Pulling out of Iraq completely is the worst thing we could possibly do for ourselves right now.

I didn't see it, because I don't watch television, and even if I did, I sure as hell wouldn't listen to Bush talk...or look at him for that matter.
But I heard all about the Social Security thing...it's gonna be gone by the time I can use it...but I already figured that.
