After seeing so much said about Kefka in other threads that were not even about Kefka, I thought it only fitting to start a discusion on him.
And deserving of one he is.
He is in all my favorite FF character and FF villian. Being the most successfull of all villians and one who you knew was evil without question. So tell me, what are your thoughts on the beloved, infamous Kefka?
I think he is the best villain in the series.

The only other villain worth naming is Garland!
(And the only reason for that is because he has no character except what is held for my wild imagination, which creates him to be quite a villain indeed, but still not one so wildly maniacal and vicious and evil as Kefka)

Kefka: The only ff villian is history to truely mess up the world big style (much like the politician who fulfils all their elections promises : rare, surprising and strangely pleasant). Plus clowns are REALLY scary.

A great villain and without a doubt the most evil out of all the FF villains. :cool:
Still... there CAN be even more evil guys. Kefka: 8/10 in evilness.
I love him because he Isn't Evil with a cause (which sometimes makes you a tiny bit sympathectic, like Garland wanting to preserve his people) hes just mad which makes you just want to hate him! I'm not a sympathetic person in case you havn't noticed!

(SPOILER) Kefka was Cid's first magitek experiment. A soldier in the Imperial Capital of Vector informs you before you go into the MRF. He is in the pub. Kefka was insane, not evil.

Im thinking "OMG Its true!!!!!" Hes the most original FF villain ever. Plus he actually suceeded in destroying the world. One of his most interesting factors.
Kefka is the greatest villian to grace the final fantasy series. Yes, he was the only succesful destroyer of the earth, yes, he slaughtered people for no reason whatsoever, and yes, he still manages to keep a funny tone to him. He's the evil clown that we all love!

Kefka is probably one of the best villains in any video game, and most certainly better than just about every other villain in Final Fantasy.
back in the early days of web site creation i made a website dedicated solely to the #1 greatest villain, Kefka. He embodied the true essence of insanity. At times he was even used as comedic relief to lighten the depressing moments. Truely one of the greats!

The closest thing i can think of is the mp3 of the last boss battle in between parts of the song they play his laugh. It's quite beautiful.

Kefka was the best...Seymour...really he is not evil...just a freak...Garland in FFI was corny to the max...Sephy...well he is a touch insane, but so is Kefka...FFIX Villians aren't evil, they wanted to survive. The Shoyin *the guy from FF X-2* He was feeling unloved.

To bad I have no sound. I think his laugh is just great. And indeed he's one of the better villians. I like the last boss battle (SPOILER)with all the tiers etc the best. It's really the best I have done yet in the FF-series.

Got to love Kefka
Kefka... well, let see. I always thought of him as a comical fall guy. No not really that but I never really took him seriously. He seemed well, to try to hard at certain points. I definatly do not doubt he is evil. For sure. And Edgar and Sabin made a fool of him in Castle Figaro. However after he killed Emperor Gestahl, I really started to realize he wasn't evil. He was insane with the lust of power. What I am getting at is that I grew to like him in a sense. However the clown thing really turned me off. Its hard to look badass when you look like a crazy clown. His final form however I thought was great. I think though I like Sephiroth a bit more. Ok alot more. But I have to admit Kefka and Sephiroth are both in my opinion some of the greatest villians in Final Fantasy. They were both different and similar. Kefka wanted to rule the world, Sephiroth wanted to destroy it. Both did what they did to show their power. P.S. Garland was a wimp, Chaos was badass.
Yeah, and Kefka was the ONLY character in any FF (except 9) that I actually wanted dead from the beginning. I was watching that movie sequence with Terra, thinking: "OK, he has to die, and I have to kill him. Otherwise, this game will suck". And it didn't disappoint.
Kefka was an awesome villian.. His plan acctually worked to.. That is untill I kicked his butt a year later.. But still. He suceeded in being the ruler of earth(or whatever planet they are on)

Sephiroth was a cruel bastard, but Kefka was just plain sadistic for the pure sake of sadism.
Kefka was evil, but also intelligent and insane. As I said before
(SPOILER)Kefka was the first of Cid's magitech-knight experiments, and the experiment was not yet perfected.
He also wasn't one of these villains who wanted to destroy all existence, which I feel is completely rediculous. Sephiroth wanted ultimate power at the sacrifice of the world, why? It made no sense, just because he couldn't handle the fact that he was a Jenova Clone.
Kefka wanted absolute power, and he got it, then he crafted his Magical Empire of Kefka, and ruled it with a stern fist, as a tyrant. He was a lot more evil than ole' sephy, Kefka made people hide in fear, and caused suffering. Sephy, he just wanted to kill everything all at once.
Kefka killed his leader that he was "loyal" to. All in a conquest for power.
Now don't get me wrong, Sephy is one bad-ass guy, and one of my favorite villains, but nothing like Kefka. The only good comparison is Luca Blight.

Anyhow, play more into the game. You'll get a good feel for him. Even if he does irritate the everliving hell out of you, then at least he is doing his job, and he is doing it well.

Kefka is one of the better lines with lines most actors would kill for, and is funny. One of the few villains who deserves the title "Villain". He rocks my world.

In all honesty his statement before the final battle I think sums his ideas up the best. "Why do you hold on to life. You can't live forever so why do you try."
This tells me that he feels that since we are all going to die he just as well speed the process along by killing us all himself. Truly a diabolical and great Villain. Really Sephy may have been "EVIL" in some peoples eyes but he is PATHETIC when compared to the heights at which kefka rose only to have 12 adventurers smite him down after over a years dominance of the planet. I must admit the final battle with kefka at least holds a little more challenge to it the first time than Sephy did too. Sure you can use the broken genji-offering combo and whatever but first time thru VII you just start throwing 12 KNIGHTS of the Round up at him and he falls truly a pathetic final encounter with your VILLAIN.
To be frank, I'll disagree with everyone and say that I don't think Kefka was too good a villain. I guess this is for personal tastes, but I've seen loads of villains who are pure evil, madmen who enjoy being evil and hurting people. They know they're evil and they love everything of it. So what? That's so old, cliched and overused that I don't want to see it again. I prefer villains who are humans, who have a cause where they sincerely believe in because they think what they're doing is right and good, and who have human emotions (and Kefka's tantrums and laugh aren't enough to make him a human villain, IMHO) and weaknesses.
That's why, in my opinion, two villains who many consider clearly the best villains ever, i.e. Kefka and Luca Blight, aren't really well made at all. I thought Sephiroth was one of the greatest villains with his tragic background story and personality, but I think even he met someone who's better developed than he is. Kuja. And maybe Shuyin. Now you may wonder, what on Earth, the other one is a cross-dresser and the other one is a ghost image of (SPOILER)Tidus. However, most of the things Kuja did was because he believed in those things. And as for Shuyin, (SPOILER)he died to protect his loved one, hoping to stop the war. However, one thousand years passed, and the people never stopped hurting and killing each other, even though Sin was dead. He just couldn't take it anymore. After being an unsent (or a ghost or whatever he was), trapped in this realm because of his desire to see people stop hurting one another, for thousand years, he wanted to just fade away and rest in peace. So he wanted to use the Vegnagun, the machine of destruction, to destroy everyone so that people couldn't hurt each other anymore, and he could fade away too. Now that's what I'd call a lot more human reasoning than Kefka's "I enjoy frying ants with magnifying glass! Hahaha! Ouch, there's sand in my boots, I must poison, rape and kill everyone because of that! Die die die! You Goddesses refuse to obey me? [insert 17 F-words here] I will burn the world! Burn, burn, burn it all! Hahaha!"
I have to disagree... I think Kefka was one of the most human character ever. He was a bit loony, but as I stated above, there was a reason that he went awol.

This is one powerful statement that Kefka states... He's not immortal, he has immense power, but he is human, and he knows that he will die soon, and that he has no real reason to live when ultimately it is death that conquers. He is angry at the short time that life grants, and figures that if you can't live forever, why should anyone bother, thus he feels he is relinquishing others of their ultimately purposeless existence.
You also have to realize, that he is insane, he wasn't born insane, read first post in this thread, and you'll see why. He may have thought about these things for a long time, but upon becoming insane, he became more outright in his actions. The poisoning of Doma, that may very well been another instance of the above quote, that he is executing this thesis. Sure, he also says "Nothing can beat the sound of thousands of voices screaming in unison" this ties in with his insanity.
"You all sound like chapters from a self-help booklet." Because ultimately, what are those, things to better our short and meaningless lives, which he deems already worthless. Why try to better it...
I think Kefka is immensely human, with deep emotions, not just insane.

Kefka-Was excellent. Completely original and loved mass destruction (who doesn't?)
Sephiroth-Was brilliant. Wanted to become a god and rule the world with mummy(which was a bit sad).
Ultimecia-WTF? Where'd she pop out of with the worst dream ever, just her and only her. Where's the evil? You can't think of how evil she is if your frozen for all eternity.
Kuja-Very evil but too efeminite. Plus, he only really went crazy when he realised he coudn't live for ever.
Yu Yevon-Worst enemy ever, too easy, was just a black spider, wait a min......
Seymour-Here we go, much better then Yu Yevon. I think he should of gone out with Kuja, Kuja would wear a dress and Seymour would talk like a girl, plus he had a beer belly - that's not evil!
He is what is thought logically impossible, that is he believes he is evil, and sanely chose to destroy the world.
I actually liked him before the destruction of the world. Back then, he was funnier.
(also, Seymour? Beer Belly? For sooth, my version of X must be different, because he didn't have one :p ).
Kefka was an effective villain because he was completely insane, and that made him somewhat scary.
But, I also felt that he didn't have much developement at all, which makes him somewhat uninteresting at the same time.
Some of the biggest development pieces in Kefka's story were hidden.
for example the lady in vector that tells you how he was infused with magitek power and went crazy. pieces of his story are easily missed and it makes him seem to be more of a hollow villain than he really is.
It's not so much that he wanted or expected to die, or that he wanted other people to die, but that he realized that life is only a finite time frame, and one must do what they can in that time. He didn't kill people just to kill people, he did it to demand loyalty. Power was his motive, not wrath...as opposed to Sephiroth, who's just a schmuck.
Sephiroth had just as much motive for killing as Kefka, I think anyway.
Kefka was evil, cool, and irritating.
You hate him and love him at the same time.
I think Kefka reminds me alot of Zorn & Thorn. Really evil, but can be comical in the game sometimes. like when he runs away from the fights at the army camp
Personally, I think Kefka is more remembered for his quotes than his plotting.
It is odd how the more recent FF villians all 'realise' that they are only mortal, (or in Seymour's case, just didn't want to give up). I'm not sure if that calls for the term 'unoriginal', though.
Kefka, as mentioned above, was quite sadist. He wasn't insane for quite a while, though, as he could recognise power and was consumed by it. In his mind Gastra was weak, and had to be disposed of (as it did happen). In the end, his mindset was not to save humanity, but to destroy it. In the minds of some of the other villians, they were what they believed (in one way or another) helping the world.
I thought that JENOVA was controlling Sephiroth, or was I wrong?

as for Kefka, what makes him so scary are the things he has done to the world, and how he can kill so easily without even a second thought, and then give a sickeningly ominous laugh. At first he seems just like a bad egg with an extremely evil disposition, someone that is annoying and needs to be taken care of (kind of like Zorn and Thorn, except more evil). Later on though he really starts to develop into a mroe evil forboding character when he poisons doma castle. Then when you go to the magitek factory.. you see another ugly scene where he kicks the corpses of some espers down a conveyer belt.
Kefka seems to gradually lose his 'pathetic' charm and become a scarier, more dangerous apponent. When he begins meddling with the statues, betraying and killing ghestal, and destroying the world, I was truly SHOCKED when I first played the game.
What makes kefka so scary is how he is 'unfolded' to the player. He is seen initially as just some crazy underling of ghestal, but quickly changes. There is nothing likeable about his personality, he is simply an evil bastard that is worth slaughtering. When I first fought Kefka, it was definitely a fight I was nervous for. Kefka is indeed 'scary' in a sense (maybe not totally literally, but I can't think of a better word).

But kefka is not a clown, he's a jester. Calling him a clown is an insult. Does Kefka have a rainbow-afro with a red round nose, baggy hoola-hoop pants and funny looking shoes?

Don't you think that Kefka might have brainwashed or manipulated Emperor Gestahl, I mean it seemed like Kefka was behind all the evilness. And that Gestahl didn't really know what they were doing.
No Gestahl knew what HE was doing he was just I guess so totally blinded in his search for power that he developed a blind spot for what was going on around him. Kefka knew more about magicite than Gestahl did and also I believe he was aware of the statues powers because if not he never would have allowed Gestahl to gain powers such as Merton and the like. This leads me to believe that Gestahl in fact had NO IDEA how powerful and knowledgable Kefka had become about Espers and the Statues.

Not trying to make any enemies here!!!, but in my opinion I felt that was the one thing that FF6 lacked... a really good villian. I wasn't too impressed with that cheesy get-up he sported, though I do have to admit that his utter ruthlessness was almost enough to make up for it... ALMOST! With such a great variety of formidable heroes up against him, I'd much rather have seen a more intimidating looking/ acting character, and not one who is always busy laughing.... maybe a Dark Knight, or someone a bit more like Sephiroth...
Sephiroth was a pussy on steroids. That's it. A whiny little kid that didn't like what some people were doing so he wanted to ruin everything. Kefka had a plan, and he went about it well. Sephiroth just wanted to destroy stuff, at least with Kefka it was just a means to an end.
No doubt, Kefka was a better planner. I just think that his personality and look are more fulfilling to the ideal of a truly bad-arse villain. The infamous scene of him walking through the flames sums it all up for me, tied in once again with great music. The way he carries himself, never backs down from anyone or anything, his outfit...he's just a bad bad man, he exudes that....Kefka does not. That's all I'm saying. And again, just my opinion.
I mean, Sephiroth kills Aeris, one of the more beloved characters in any of the Square games, and it's actually hard to hate him after it. Sure you get incredibly upset at her end, certainly feel sad, and if you're like me you'll even shed a tear or two (or empty a box a Kleenex!!! :p ). But by the time the last duel comes up and you see the scene with Sephiroth's intimidating glare, standing there like a rock, his body "saying" bring it on as Cloud spirals towards him, you're left with an adrenaline rush and thinking, man, this guy is one bad mo-fo. Most FFers I know would debate you for hours over who's the greatest hero in the series, but ask them who the most fearsome bad guy is, there's very little disent in opinion once Sephiroth's name is mentioned. He's just one of those characters who's so bad you almost have to like him for it.
Kefka didn't look too dangerous in the beginning. He looked just like a common madman. I didn't expect him to be the final enemy, I thought that would be Emperor Gesthal. Kefka was a surprise - not a total one, but a surprise nonetheless. He looked harmless in the beginnig. That's why he looks so great as a supervillain afterwards.
I thought about this post all day at work trying to formulate an arguement about the whole 'kefka is the best ff villain' idea and I couldn't come up with anything...
Kefka is in fact the BEST final fantasy villain...
Sephiroth lost some points because he is too easy... guy who wears black with steel gray hair and a big katana... nothing to original there... HOWEVER... Sephiroth stabbed Aeris through the back... That is pretty friggin evil...
Seifer Almasy deserves some credit as well... FFVIII was an incredible game... better than XI and VII... Remember this game had a mini-game that had Seifer torturing Squall... very cool... plus the whole 'chicken-wuss' thing...
Some people have been bashing Golbez in this thread... He was a great villian even though he turned out to be a puppet... Kain as well... his constant switching of sides in FFIV never failed to suprise me when I was originally playing that game...
as for Kuja... well... he was definately a mean guy... but kinda hard to take him seriously cause... well... err... lets just say that Brahne wasn't the only queen in FFIX...
What makes Kefka the ultimate villian is that unlike most other FF villians he is NOT a puppet... there is no Zemus or Ultimaciea or anything behind him... Kefka is the end all be all...
Final Fantasy 3 (as we in the US knew this game) is my favorite game of all time. At the time of its US release for the SNES NOTHING compared and even though the final fantasy games that followed were exponentially superior as far as graphics and gameplay was concerned the storytelling of FFVI was never surpased and I have always been left wanting with the release of new final fantasy titles (am I the only one who thinks FFX stunk?)

The Emperor in FFII destroyed towns and threw people into slavery on his conquest to take over the world. After his death he came back from HELL with Hell's palace to finish his conquest.
In FFV, FREAKING HUGE sections of the world were sucked into the void and destroyed forever.
Kefka wasn't the only villian to cause any damage.
I like Kefka. He's a strange villain because sometimes he almost says things that are quite the opposite of the way he behaves. For example, (SPOILER)when he is about to throw Emperor Gestahl's body off of the Floating Continent (right after killing him with the power of the statues) he begins by saying "Poor old" then trails off and decides Gestahl deserves it. Personally, it makes me curious to wonder if he really is crazy or not.
However, I'm not that far into WoR yet, so maybe I'll learn more later.
Let me express my appreciation for Kefka. He was a great departure from the ussual 'ME AM EVIL' reptilian bosses or the cookie cutter Darth Vader wannabes in cruel looking armor.
Probably because I liked the Batman movie so much as a kid, I really liked FF6 as well. Kefka is like the Joker. He's a psychopath and the comic relief of the story.
I think he's tragic too, in his own way....although it's hard to feel sorry for him. He was an experimental magitek knight, and the flawed procedures resulted in him becoming psychotic (why they still let him be in charge of stuff I don't know).
Gotta agree, Kefka is the best FF villain. Though Sephiroth and Kuja come very close, in my opinion. What i don't understand is that people seem to have not too much trouble with Kefka's jester get-up, but get all "omgzwtflolzorz!" about Kuja's outfit, which is just as ..weird. See past the wacky outift, and you'll see a true puppetmaster in Kuja..After all, he managed to bring the whole world at war without them realising Kuja is the real enemy instead of queen Brahne.
I agree, Kuja is my second favorite villain. I just wish he wore some real pants. lol

Personally, I think Kefka is a crazed man-woman-clown-thingie. He/she/it should be shot....He laughs weird too.

Shuyin was driven mostly by anger. He saw Yuna in the Farplane place thingie and thought she was Lenne. He realized she wasn't, got tricked by her into thinking she WAS Lenne, and got mad. He found Vegnagun and got to work.

He's the most evil villian of the lot. (well, of the ones I've played) Even Kuja's not as heartless as Kefka & Sephiroth is a pussy compared to Kefka. I think Sorceress Adel & Kefka would make a great double act, as I think Adel is the only one who comes anywhere near his evilness.. :cool:
I love how horrible he is to the Emperor on the Floating Island... So heartless.
My favorite villian in the series is Kuja, and Kefka's probably my second. Sephiroth is by far the coolest villian, but not the greatest. Kuja was someone I actually understood. Kefka was a great villian, even more evil than Kuja, but in the end it felt like he was just a psychotic jester. As people have said before, hes like an uber-evil Zorn and Thorn. But Kuja... Theres just something about him that I found so incredibly awesome. People never take him seriously because he looks like a chick, but he really knew what he was doing. I just don't feel that Kefka can beat him.
Hm, really? I never cared for Kefka too much.
He seemed too... cliché. His reason for existing was too be the evil bad guy dressed like a clown. "Evil" bad guys are okay but don't hold a special place in my heart. I prefer the messed up realistic actual people type bad guys. The ones who have motivation, and actually seem like they could be human.
Just my opinion though. Kefka was funny if nothing else.
I think he's better than Sephiroth.
Kefka's evilness is unmatched by no one in all of FF.. He's Cool, I enjoy fighting him and he makes me laugh :D
Personally, I've never liked Kefka all that much. Yes, he does have a great laugh, but the thing is, he's overly cliched. He's evil, insane, and power-hungry, and I've seen just a few too many villains that fit into that mold to be able to really like any of them. To me, a good villain has to be well-developed as a character, have understandable motivations, and honestly believe that what they're doing is for the greater good. It's more realistic that way--even Hitler believed in his cause and thought he was doing the right thing, after all.
Kefka, on the other hand, just comes across as evil and insane--and not a very well done evil and insane, either. Insane bad guys, if done well, can be both believable and extremely scary. Kefka is neither.
But really, I don't think he's any better or worse than any of the other FF villains. They all tend to more or less fit into the same mold. The Final Fantasy games had the whole Warriors of Light vs. Evil thing in the beginning, and while the stories have gotten way more complex since then, they still have a tendency to show things as stark black and white. And there's nothing wrong with that--you can pull off a perfectly good story that way (and FF does on a regular basis). But personally, I prefer more realistic stories, where everything is in a shade of gray. (Hence my obsession with the Xeno series.)
Anyway, that's just my two cents. :)

Where I do see your point, and somewhat agree with you (on all your points), again, this is a game. Why would they make a game where the player must decide what's right or wrong to do? Instead, it's much easier for all parties to simply say "this is what's wrong, fix it", and we go on our merry way. Was there a question that we should destroy Kefka and the Statues, because without curative magic, it'd be much harder to help people? Or to take all the espers instead of leaving some for others? What about the airship, wouldn't that serve a better purpose as a commercial airliner, instead of our own personal taxi?Quote:

He is one of the first villians to have a decent sense of humour compare to the villians from FF1 - FF5.

i also love how in the ending of FF6, when the airship is flying around, the land and sea have reverted to happy sunshine land again, despite the damage done by kefka.

But the main reason I say he's not very believable or scary is because he strikes me as a very comical character. With the clown get-up and lines like "Son of a submariner!" (and the infamous self-help booklet line, etc.), it's hard for me to take him seriously, because he's always making me laugh. And again, I personally prefer a more serious villain/story.

For one, this thread is intended to get oppinions on Kefka, not to enforce oppions on everyone else. I see no problem with someone not liking Kefka, even though I am an advid fan of the great Kefka. As long as the oppinions are supported with reasons for those oppinions, that's good enough for me.
Xenogears and Xenosaga are wonderful games. I am as well a hard core XG/XS fan.
It was mentioned that Kefka justs fits the mold of the other FF villains? There I would have to disagree. Please allow me to explain why.
Kefka was the first true human villian in the FF series. The only other human villian before him was the Emperor of Palmaceia (FF2j). X-Death doesn't count because he turned into some tree thing.
Kefka was the first villain in the FF series that turned on his superior. Kefka so foar has been the only FF vilian to accomplish his goal. And Kefka's reason were clearly laid out....

Kefka was an experiment gone wrong. An experiment of infusing Magitek power into a person. After that something snaped in him and he went mad. He was not some badarse carrying around a long sword wanting to return the world to the ancients. He was not some crazy person looking to live on forever, he was not some self-righteous person seeking to save the world by becoming something worse. No, he just wanted to be god and destroy everything, which he did. He actually won.
He is the only FF villain to accutally cause the heros to become depressed and lose faith...
