Zelda is considered an Action/RPG or Action Adventure game depending on who you talk to. The fact that there's no experience system or form of character development, stat-wise, is reason some won't consider it an RPG. I think the fact that it has HP and and MP (in the form of hearts and a magic meter, respectively) is reason enough to consider it an RPG.

The battles, instead of fought by means of a turn-based system, are in real time, putting it in the Action/RPG subgenre. Turn-based RPGs are generally thought of to be "traditional" RPGs.

Fair enough. That'll do for me. It's still staying in my top five though. :p

I actually have something to add to that. In the Zelda series you have direct control over your character, while RPGs have a more command driven system. That's why Kingdom Hearts is more of an Action RPG than Zelda, because you actually use a menu to control your own actions. In Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior, you select actions from a menu. In Diablo, you issue commands by clicking the mouse. Fallout gives you a sort of combination of the two. In Zelda, you just press A to slash. It's always been considered an adventure game. Zelda II had more RPG elements; while in the overworld you would encounter monsters and then enter a "fight", you got experience from fighting that led to level ups which could increase your attributes, and magic was actually used via a menu. However, dungeons were done in the style of a side-scroller, and jumping around and using various moves (upper thrust, downward thrust, etc.) were a big part of winning fights. You really couldn't call it an RPG in the purest sense of the word.

By that logic ANY game is an RPG. Gran Turismo is an RPG because you role play a race car driver on the racing circuit. Super Mario World is an RPG because you control mario on his quest to save the princess.

And by a seperate interpretation of that logic: none of those are RPGs because you have no true control over the character. They follow the scripts created and programmed in. A Final Fantasy style game is more like an animated, interactive story than a Role-Playing Game. Can't be role-playing if you don't get to play the Role how you wish.

That being said, my favorite "RPGs" are:

1. FF 7- because it made me cry.
2. Legend of Dragoon- because it actually surprised me
3. FF 8- because the Ragnorock was awesome
4. FF 6- I've played the ending repeatedly because killing kefka is a hobby of mine.
5. Chrono Trigger- and it's only last because the competition was THAT GOOD.

How boring am I!? Four of my top five RPGs are Final Flaming Fantasies! Oh well, I guess I can't help my fanboyish ways.

I find it insulting to RPG's to put them in lists placing them above the rest. So I will resign my self to love and treat all RPG's equally.

Ah, that's a good point, and a good way at looking at it. I actually have a friend who tries to define "Action/RPGs" and "Adventure/RPGs" as being two different subgenres, though those two names aren't good descriptions of what he uses to define each subgenre. Zelda isn't any different from most other adventure games, aside from the fact that there is actually a system of increasing your stats, something not many pre-modern adventures games featured.

Ocarina of Time has somehow gradually eased it's way into being considered an RPG over time, and I think it has something to do with exploration, which is a major defining point of the RPG genre, and in the way that the world is designed, and how nearly the entirety of it is open for you to investigate from the very beginning. It just feels like an RPG, but that's not a good argument.

And about the command argument. In Ocarina of Time's case, to be subjective, the various items/equipment Link has equipped to the C buttons are representative of menu items. Though they don't appear as your stereotypical option menu like that found in Kingdom Hearts, both serve the same purpose (though, admittedly, the menu system in KH is more in depth, and you won't find me disagreeing with the argument that KH is more fitting of being considered an RPG). Furthermore, the various menu items Link can equip to the C buttons range from bows and boomerangs, which can be a form of special attack, to magic crystals (ie. Naryu's Love, Din's Fire, etc.), which are magic attacks in the truest form, being that they reduce MP (in the form of the magic meter) when cast/used.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you either way, just adding to the argument. It's all up to individual interpretation, anyway.

Oh yeah. Zelda II is sort of the black sheep of the series, but I have fond memories of running back and forth in dungeons while my HP was low, and trying to kill enemies without getting hit so I could get a level up. That, and wandering around the world map, waiting for an enemy to drop an experience boost. Fun times.

Bah, that argument has been made a million times, and it kind of negates itself, given the loose definition of "role playing" applied to games. The two opposing arguments already made in this thread address this.

I'm going to leave Final Fantasy out of this, since it's only top 5 (and these'll probably end up in different orders depending on my mood):

Out of curiosity, Is this game very hard? I have intentions of obtaining a copy of Silver Star Story at some point, but I have the boxed version of Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, and it's the most difficult RPG I've ever played.

That's the reason I ask, and because I hear that the first one isn't that difficult in comparison to Lunar 2, so I'm trying to assess whether the series in general is meant to be challenging, or if it's just Lunar 2 that causes headaches.

Lunar Legend was fairly challenging, I suppose. Harder than most FF's, I'd say. Last I asked someone what they thought of both Lunar games, he said they were both "buggeringly hard". I can't really help you more than that, I'm afraid. I'd love to be able to play both of the Lunar games, sadly all I have is the OSTs, which are very impressive, I must say.

Nah, you answered exactly what I was asking. I read that you had not played SSSC; I was asking about Lunar Legend. I only mentioned the former because I was expressing that I wanted to play it just as you did. I suppose my paragraph structure (where I chose to place the sentence) was misleading.

I've heard that Lunar 2 is considerably harder than the first one (and it is tough), and I wanted to know what you thought of Lunar Legend's difficulty to assess whether the series was designed to be difficult (based on what I know about Lunar 2, and what you told me about Lunar Legends), or rather just Lunar 2.

Yeah, Legaia two came out a couple years ago for the PS2, and I believe it was developed by a different team (Legend of Legaia was a first party Sony title, wasn't it?).

I have both, and I thought the first one was much more fun, but the gameplay in Legaia 2 is probably deeper in every espect. Regardless, even with a very similar battle system and a lot of music common to both games, it didn't feel exactly right.

However, there is one aspect of the sequel that I liked a lot more - not just the battle system, but a particular aspect of it. In Legaia 2 your strongest movies still use AP, but any special move that's not considered a Super Art actually gives you AP, allowing you to continually attack round after round, instead of having to waste turns Spiriting.

Ah the fabled what is an RPG argument always fun. Well don't use the you play a role argument, cause that'd be almost every game. And don't use the, has to be random encounters or turn based, cause that isn't true either.

Most RPG's give you a choice of how to raise your characters. Zelda, does not, except Zelda II as I said earlier. This element of having control of character development is an RPG. Come on, I want someone to say that there isn't any choice of character development in Final Fantasy, I'm expecting it...

Though I have a feeling Atlus' new game "Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga" (Also known as "Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner" in Japan, Atlus is trying to get the SMT name recognizable in North America), that's coming out this March will definately make it onto this list from what I've seen so far.

What RPG is Morrowind. I aint heard of it?

Morrowind is a RPG for the XBOX. I haven't played it much but I found it was kind of like Fable or possibly/less the Bard's Tale. You customize your character then you have free roam over the map, accepting quests or killing the old shopkeeper that tried to kill you.

Because all of them, need skill, timing, and good reflexes to battle and play well, as well as having a pretty absorbing storyline and likeable characters, with a relative amount of depth. Well, less of the character side on Super Mario RPG, but it was still quite a lot, especially with Mallow.

All I can say is Namco, Wolf Team and Tri-Ace > You

And Lunar : SSSC is pretty damn hard, yes, but I'd say Eternal Blue is harder for the Dragon battles, especially the black dragon. WAY TO BE RESISTANT TO PHYSICAL ATTACKS, THANKS FOR THAT.

The final boss was kickingly hard too, and then the epilogue, oh gawd, that was difficult.

Wow.. I think those are some of the best RPGs ever. Honestly, what what didn't you like about Shadow Hearts and Vagrant Story? I can understand why you don't like Suikoden IV, since I think it was the worse out of the Suiko series.. but Vagrant Story and Shadow Hearts?

Shadow Hearts was boring and the battle system was silly. Same goes for Vagrant story. The battles are so stupid. One time you could do 60 next you will do 0. And its just a continous dungons. Well the bit i got up to then I got bored and stopped. There are no towns and just dungon trekking. Boring..........

I'd have to say that I consider the Zelda series games RPGs, the adventure/rpg or action/rpg tag is pretty accurate.

Opinions can not be right or wrong, my dear sir, especially in this circumstance where the definition of an RPG is a subjective one.

here's how i have to put it :) :

Zelda may not be turn-based like Final Fantasy :cool: , but i've always considered it to be an RPG ;) . my memory is vivid here, but i once had two of the earliest Zelda games :) (as a rom) and what i can remember is that one of them is RPG-based :mad: :D .

HEck, with this literal argument, any game can become and RPG, not by conventional standards, but by definition. And if that's what it takes to get Zelda on my list, there ya go. If that's not good enough for you, sorry, it's my list and my opinion. :D

It's basically Zelda with a much more involved plot and brain killingly hard puzzles. I've never seen anything as nasty as the ice column puzzle in that game. Working Designs even posted the solution on their website because it was that hard.

Well, considering this is an ff site, pretty much everybody is going to say mostly ffs. And i'm no exception.

I'd consider it an action RPG, but RPG is Role Playing Game, you do that in every game, you play a role, so such genre definitions are very much personal opinion.
