C'mon people, Zelda isn't an RPG by most standards, and this has been widely discussed... except Zelda II: Adventure of Link, that was...
Anyways, have to do top ten games
1)FFVI
2)Chrono Trigger
3)FFVII
4)Super Mario RPG
5)Tales of Symphonia
6)Golden Sun/GS:Lost Age
7)Fire Emblem(GBA US, though they are all good, this is the only one I legally own)
8)Shining Force(original)
9)Secret of Mana
10)Zelda II(it's classic)
Or top 5 series
1)FF(I include CT and mario RPG)
2)Tales series
3)Golden Sun
4)Fire Emblem
5)Shining Force
(BTW anyone know where I can get translated Romancing Saga roms, I hear they are great RPGs and want to play them, but understand them whilst I do!)
NOTE: I don't own a PS/PS2 and have played none of the exclusive RPGs for it...
THE JACKEL
The five best rpgs:
1 final fantasy VII
2 final fantasy X :p
3 Grandia II :greenie:
4 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
5 Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (actual a strategy rpg but an rpg all the same) :D
Feh, I can think of better RPGs....
1) Tecmo Cup Soccer
2) Earthbound
3) Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
4) Vagrant Story
and of course.....
5) Square's Tom Sawyer
(SPOILER)my real answer is 7th Saga, but don't tell anyone that!
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Xenogears
Tales of Symphonia
.hack(all 4 of them...it is pretty much 1 game and not really 4. They just wanted money)
Also Legend of Zelda is not an RPG!
For me its:
1. FFVI
2. FFX
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Kingdom Hearts
5. Suikoden III
All followed closely by Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, and FFIX, and FFVII
Xenogears
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Cross
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Valkyrie Profile
All in no particular order.
1. FF (almost all of them)
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Dark Cloud 2
4. Super Mario RPG
5. Kingdom Hearts
LotR-the third age was'nt too bad, but nothing too worthy of favorite RPG
If I had to list my least favorite...
25- Dark Cloud
100,000 times infinity to the thirty first power- FF X-2
Someone tell me then. Why isn't Zelda an RPG?
No flaming and don't hi jack the thread with loads of answers. Just one will do.
- Final Fantasy VII
- Diablo II (don't know if this counts as an RPG)
- KOTOR
- Deus Ex
- Morrowind
i think one of the first two was  . i think it's more like Role Playing Action :) .Quote:

The battles, instead of fought by means of a turn-based system, are in real time, putting it in the Action/RPG subgenre. Turn-based RPGs are generally thought of to be "traditional" RPGs.
Fair enough. That'll do for me. It's still staying in my top five though. :p
1. Legend of Mana
2. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
3. SD3
4. SoM
5. Tales of Eternia
Then in a bunch: CT, FF6, SoM, ToS.
I actually have something to add to that. In the Zelda series you have direct control over your character, while RPGs have a more command driven system. That's why Kingdom Hearts is more of an Action RPG than Zelda, because you actually use a menu to control your own actions. In Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior, you select actions from a menu. In Diablo, you issue commands by clicking the mouse. Fallout gives you a sort of combination of the two. In Zelda, you just press A to slash. It's always been considered an adventure game. Zelda II had more RPG elements; while in the overworld you would encounter monsters and then enter a "fight", you got experience from fighting that led to level ups which could increase your attributes, and magic was actually used via a menu. However, dungeons were done in the style of a side-scroller, and jumping around and using various moves (upper thrust, downward thrust, etc.) were a big part of winning fights. You really couldn't call it an RPG in the purest sense of the word.Quote:

Actually- RPG's are short for role playing games. Which probably means playing the role of a character in a set story. So, unless you were specifieng on the more FF turn-type RPG's, then Zelda technically is a role-playing game.
A typical answer.
1. Final Fantasy 1
2. Final Fantasy 6
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Earthbound
5. Super Mario RPG
By that logic ANY game is an RPG. Gran Turismo is an RPG because you role play a race car driver on the racing circuit. Super Mario World is an RPG because you control mario on his quest to save the princess.Quote:

Final Fantasy VII
Shadow Hearts
Final Fantasy VIII
Star Ocean 2
Chronotrigger
I should probably stress that these are in no particular order.
Suikoden II
Suikoden I
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Suikoden III
1. Final Fantasy VI
Actually, let's just stop there. ;)
And by a seperate interpretation of that logic: none of those are RPGs because you have no true control over the character. They follow the scripts created and programmed in. A Final Fantasy style game is more like an animated, interactive story than a Role-Playing Game. Can't be role-playing if you don't get to play the Role how you wish.Quote:

4. FF 6- I've played the ending repeatedly because killing kefka is a hobby of mine.
5. Chrono Trigger- and it's only last because the competition was THAT GOOD.
1) Final Fantasy VII

3) Earthbound

How boring am I!? Four of my top five RPGs are Final Flaming Fantasies! Oh well, I guess I can't help my fanboyish ways.
I find it insulting to RPG's to put them in lists placing them above the rest. So I will resign my self to love and treat all RPG's equally.
FFVIII
chrono cross
FFT
xenogears
suikoden
Ah, that's a good point, and a good way at looking at it. I actually have a friend who tries to define "Action/RPGs" and "Adventure/RPGs" as being two different subgenres, though those two names aren't good descriptions of what he uses to define each subgenre. Zelda isn't any different from most other adventure games, aside from the fact that there is actually a system of increasing your stats, something not many pre-modern adventures games featured.Quote:

It just feels like an RPG, but that's not a good argument.
And about the command argument. In Ocarina of Time's case, to be subjective, the various items/equipment Link has equipped to the C buttons are representative of menu items. Though they don't appear as your stereotypical option menu like that found in Kingdom Hearts, both serve the same purpose (though, admittedly, the menu system in KH is more in depth, and you won't find me disagreeing with the argument that KH is more fitting of being considered an RPG). Furthermore, the various menu items Link can equip to the C buttons range from bows and boomerangs, which can be a form of special attack, to magic crystals (ie. Naryu's Love, Din's Fire, etc.), which are magic attacks in the truest form, being that they reduce MP (in the form of the magic meter) when cast/used.
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you either way, just adding to the argument. It's all up to individual interpretation, anyway.
Oh yeah. Zelda II is sort of the black sheep of the series, but I have fond memories of running back and forth in dungeons while my HP was low, and trying to kill enemies without getting hit so I could get a level up. That, and wandering around the world map, waiting for an enemy to drop an experience boost. Fun times.Quote:

Bah, that argument has been made a million times, and it kind of negates itself, given the loose definition of "role playing" applied to games. The two opposing arguments already made in this thread address this.Quote:

4. Grandia II
5. Lunar Legend (though from what I know of it, it's nothing compared to Silver Star Story Complete, which sadly, I've never been able to play).
As far as FF goes, my top 5 would be somewhat like this:
1. IX
2. VII
3. V
4. VI
5. IV
It's hard, but here I go.
#1 - Final Fantasy VIII
#2 - Final Fantasy VII
#3 - Final Fantasy IX
#4 - Koudelka
#5 - Sword of Mana
Out of curiosity, Is this game very hard? I have intentions of obtaining a copy of Silver Star Story at some point, but I have the boxed version of Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, and it's the most difficult RPG I've ever played.Quote:

fire emblem ( the u.s one)
ff tactics
phantom brave
ff9
suikoden( all of them)
No order, one per series, only on consoles, you know the rules... the only way I can list just 5 :p -
Final Fantasy
Super Mario RPG
Shining Force 2
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Dragon Warrior 3
You cant treat all RPGs equally. I have a large dislike of Vagrant Story and a large like of Final Fantasy VII. I like them differently but I dont care
Are you insinuating that the Zelda series has character development and storyline? Or branching storylines like a western based RPG? Or both?Quote:

Koudelka is such an obvious choice for a Top-Five RPG Games.
Nah, you answered exactly what I was asking. I read that you had not played SSSC; I was asking about Lunar Legend. I only mentioned the former because I was expressing that I wanted to play it just as you did. I suppose my paragraph structure (where I chose to place the sentence) was misleading.
I've heard that Lunar 2 is considerably harder than the first one (and it is tough), and I wanted to know what you thought of Lunar Legend's difficulty to assess whether the series was designed to be difficult (based on what I know about Lunar 2, and what you told me about Lunar Legends), or rather just Lunar 2.
Thanks for the info.
1) Final Fantasy VII ( I like to be original when I can but can't deny this) Square 1997
2) Final Fantasy VI Square 1994
3) Secret of Mana Square 1992
4) Final Fantasy IX Square 2000
5) Final Fantasy X Square 2002
1.FFVII
2.FFVIII
3.FFX
4. .hack//
5.FFIX
I would say Xenogears but I havent played it and I dont consider KH or Zelda to be RPG's.
1. Final Fantasy X
2. Final Fantasy VIII
3. Final Fantasy IX
4. Final Fantasy VII
5. Legend of legaia
I love RPG's
Shadow Hearts (both)
Suikoden (any)
Grandia II
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Legend of Legaia (both)
there's more than one??Quote:

I have both, and I thought the first one was much more fun, but the gameplay in Legaia 2 is probably deeper in every espect. Regardless, even with a very similar battle system and a lot of music common to both games, it didn't feel exactly right.
However, there is one aspect of the sequel that I liked a lot more - not just the battle system, but a particular aspect of it. In Legaia 2 your strongest movies still use AP, but any special move that's not considered a Super Art actually gives you AP, allowing you to continually attack round after round, instead of having to waste turns Spiriting.
hmmmmm, I'll have to buy that.Quote:

Ah the fabled what is an RPG argument always fun. Well don't use the you play a role argument, cause that'd be almost every game. And don't use the, has to be random encounters or turn based, cause that isn't true either.
Most RPG's give you a choice of how to raise your characters. Zelda, does not, except Zelda II as I said earlier. This element of having control of character development is an RPG. Come on, I want someone to say that there isn't any choice of character development in Final Fantasy, I'm expecting it...
THE JACKEL
Hmmmm...
1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne & Final Fantasy Tactics (too close to decide between)
3. Vagrant Story
4. Star Ocean: The Second Story
5. Final Fantasy VIII
I'd like to tie Kingdom Hearts for last place, as it was lots of fun, but I enjoyed VIII a bit more.
Though I have a feeling Atlus' new game "Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga" (Also known as "Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner" in Japan, Atlus is trying to get the SMT name recognizable in North America), that's coming out this March will definately make it onto this list from what I've seen so far.
What RPG is Morrowind. I aint heard of it?
Morrowind is a RPG for the XBOX. I haven't played it much but I found it was kind of like Fable or possibly/less the Bard's Tale. You customize your character then you have free roam over the map, accepting quests or killing the old shopkeeper that tried to kill you.
sounds good. Aint got an Xbox thought :(

A) Earthbound
1) The 7th Saga (GOOD LORD THIS GAME GETS HARD!)
I) Chrono Trigger
a) Mario & Luigi
i) Dragon Warrior III
In order of "I feel like it today", my favorite FFs:
1) FFVIII
2) FFII
3) FFVI
4) FFMQ
5) FFI
And now, in completely random order, my favorite "not quite" RPGs:
3) Tecmo Cup Soccer
81) Alundra
-14) Act Raiser
1/-1) Kingdom Hearts
i) Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Symphonia
Star Ocean
Star Ocean 2
Super Mario RPG
Because all of them, need skill, timing, and good reflexes to battle and play well, as well as having a pretty absorbing storyline and likeable characters, with a relative amount of depth. Well, less of the character side on Super Mario RPG, but it was still quite a lot, especially with Mallow.
All I can say is Namco, Wolf Team and Tri-Ace > You
And Lunar : SSSC is pretty damn hard, yes, but I'd say Eternal Blue is harder for the Dragon battles, especially the black dragon. WAY TO BE RESISTANT TO PHYSICAL ATTACKS, THANKS FOR THAT.
The final boss was kickingly hard too, and then the epilogue, oh gawd, that was difficult.
1) Final fantasy VII
2) The legend of dragoon
3) Final fantasy VIII
4) KH
5) star ocean till the end of time
(Not in any specific order just afew of the RPGs that i like yeah)
Is Alundra an RPG???
I enjoy it loads but I always thought it was an RPG but people have said no. Help Me please!

Wow.. I think those are some of the best RPGs ever. Honestly, what what didn't you like about Shadow Hearts and Vagrant Story? I can understand why you don't like Suikoden IV, since I think it was the worse out of the Suiko series.. but Vagrant Story and Shadow Hearts?Quote:

I'd have to say that I consider the Zelda series games RPGs, the adventure/rpg or action/rpg tag is pretty accurate.
My list:
1. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn / The Throne of Bhaal
2. Chrono Cross
3. Final Fantasy Tactics
4. Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time
5. Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantsay X-2
Lufia II
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
you know, I've already won the Zelda is not an RPG argument on another thread on EoFF, so click on my user name and go to my most recent posts, it's under "the direction square is taking these days" I'm too lazy to have to argue to a whole new set of people again, when I know I'm right.

Opinions can not be right or wrong, my dear sir, especially in this circumstance where the definition of an RPG is a subjective one.
here's how i have to put it :) :
Zelda may not be turn-based like Final Fantasy  , but i've always considered it to be an RPG ;) . my memory is vivid here, but i once had two of the earliest Zelda games :) (as a rom) and what i can remember is that one of them is RPG-based  :D .
Currently
1) Tales of Symphonia (GCN)
2) Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
3) Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
4) Chrono Trigger (SNES)
5) Legend of Zelda (GCN) (Havn't played it, but when I do, it's going up to #1 :D)
As for the "Zelda not being an RPG" thing, well, tough, I pick it. I'll just be literal with my interpretation and there ya go. I am Playing the Role of somone in a Game. HEck, with this literal argument, any game can become and RPG, not by conventional standards, but by definition. And if that's what it takes to get Zelda on my list, there ya go. If that's not good enough for you, sorry, it's my list and my opinion. :D

Sprawling, demi-god type hijinx. Plus you get the chance to be an elf, which is never a bad thing. Will Ferrell knows what I'm talking about, right Will?

He's nodding.
Planescape: Torment
Deep, dark and oddly disturbing in places. I've never played anything like it before in my life.
Skies Of Arcadia
Flying pirate ships! Need I say more?
Deus Ex: Invisible War
May come as a surprise to some, especially since the original is so highly regarded but I must admit, I prefer IW. Though I do miss Walton Simons. :(

FFV is my new favourite
1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Zelda: OoT
3. Little Big Adventure

I'd consider it an action RPG, but RPG is Role Playing Game, you do that in every game, you play a role, so such genre definitions are very much personal opinion.
