According to Taoist legend , the Jade Emperor devised this as a systemof identifying the movements of the stars and gave them to animals , which would revolve in a 12 year pattern.He held a race to determine the fastest animals - the first twelve to cross a river would be chosen to represent the twelve earthly brancheswhich make up the cyclical order of years in the lunar calendar. People born under the different signs were suppposed to possess the characteristics of their particular animal - for example ,the Monkey's intellect ,the Dog's loyalty , the Ox's shyness etc.
