In Japan weapons are banned and generally people tend to follow the rules. That reaction wasn't at all surprising, I don't believe even the police officers carry weapons.

I would like to note though that Japanese prisons are some of the worst around, and when they do subdue you you are probably not going to come out looking too great, if, indeed, you come out at all.

Well, if you're not trained to face an armed person on the expectation that nobody will have a weapon that you need to subdue, do you honestly think they should be expected to be able to confront it when the situation presents itself?

A friend of mine used to spend his summer in Japan while his father was stationed there, and he told me that a kid in middle school had been being bullied by another kid, and he decided to fight back and ended up breaking the other kid's arm or something. My thinking is that, armed robberies and armed suspects are few and far from being common, so just like how *insert rare cases of crimes here* for us we wouldnt put so much worry on, its only logical for them not to care too much for armed suspects because its rare and not oftenly seen for them. It might not seem logical to us..but we dont live in Japan :x
