Well, they are talking about feral, wild cats that are over running the streets and killing off other species. If it was some horribly ugly animal that was killing off pretty little birds would you protest it as much? I don't like the whole idea either, considering it is the fault of humans that these feral cats' population is out of control.
I'm not sure where I stand on this issue to be honest.

No, no! Sorry, I am just kidding. I am a rather non-violent person, but I understand how some things simply must die if they get out of control, in order to let other things live. It's our fault that all the cats are out there. We, as humans, messed up the natural order of things here, and unfortunately, we may need to fix our mistake in this manner in order to avoid putting certain bird species into extinction.
Wait! I have a solution! Capture all the cats and than let them go in NY to take care of the pigeon problem! ;)
As for the horses, that is just wrong. Those damn horses were already wild, and were there first. They kill them to give cattle grazing ground, and to keep them off the land.
You don't realise how awesome pigeons are until you move to a different part of NY where there are only seagulls. :/ Get the seagulls, please~Quote:

I love all animals as well, unless you consider bugs animals, if someone proposed a bug genocide I'd be first in line to whole heartedly agree. I can't think of a horribly ugly animal... Well, I guess Pug dogs are horribly ugly, but they're so ugly they totally go around the spectrum and become cute again. I'm pretty much against the killing of animals for a reason such as this. I'm not too into the idea of killing animals for food either, but I think meat is delicious so I have no grounds to complain there. This just seems totally wrong to me because it just seems like an excuse so that people have another thing they can legally kill.

But seriously, you've got a good point there. As I said before, what was I thinking saying the cats are the problem, it's obviously that humans are the real and original problem. (I'm not being sarcastic.)

How about this for an ugly animal: big, nasty sewer rats? Larger than most cats, and ugly as sin. Get them in a pack, and they'll bring down almost anything that is meat. Get them hungry enough, and THAT includes humans.
If those were overpopulating, and came up from the sewers to eat your pets, wouldn't you be for killing as many of them as you could? There'd be a wide-spread moral outrage that we haven't driven the rats into extinction for the purpose of "sanitation". Yes, being cute makes them more lovable, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't clear the problem before it goes too far and the entire population starves to death.

Seriosuly though, there is better ways of solving this issue. For example, I have helped capturing stray cats to take them to the vet and chemically castrate them, thus controlling stray cat population in Barcelona. It seems to me like a better solution, then again, it's easier to shoot them, and most people just don't mind doing that.
Chemical castration works for only a few days. Then it wears off. You'd have to continuously dose all the strays. A bullet, however, you only need to use once.
True. That's why you use surgical methods. My main problem is allowing residents a liscense to just start shooting. If the ferals are as big a problem as they claim (and, let's face it, feral cats do quite a bit of hunting,) then why not use humane methods? They should also make neutering pets mandatory, otherwise they'll just keep breeding. :mad:Quote:

I don't think some of you realize just how many feral cats can gather at somewhere like an old farmhouse.
There's also a difference between "stray" and "feral" mind you. You can adopt a stray cat, it might turn out fine. A feral cat is a little ball of hate.
I'm a fan of cats, and was originally shocked to read the proposal, but at the end of the day though, is a feral cat going to live much of a great life anyway? That being said, surely there are far more pressing issues at hand, unless the amount of birds being killed is negatively affecting the community in some way.
Yeah, they isn't enough of them to keep the bug population down, so the bug population becomes too large and eats all the plants, and when all the plants die, we run out of oxygen and die. :p That's a negative effect, my friend. ;)

I can't say I care that much about cats in particular.
Nor do I care a lot about birds getting killed cats.
However, I think we should let nature have its way and not interfere too much.
I'd rather wipe out all humans (excluding me and everyone I know) then all cats,
who can't really make that much of a difference anyway.

Jojo might be better to ask, since she lives out in the boondocks when she's not in college.
In many cases the cats wouldn't be out of control If people had properly taken care of their pets and such. If you have a cat and dont' plan to breed them for quality and such.. casterate the thing... if you don't want it anymore.. dont' just tose it to the streets... etc... you get the drift the root problem here is likely the people, not the animals.Quote:

...That IS the root of the problem. These cats are generations away from human ownership, that's why they're FERAL.
And as for YOUR cat, you shouldn't be letting it run loose anyway, that's dangerous. Besides, this would NOT APPLY IN A CITY. If you take your cat out to a farm and let it out to play without a collar, that's your own damn problem.

I usually like to err pro-life... except in certian circumstances. Also I am not aware how BAD it actually is... but I really think there is another solution.. ways to still err pro-life that is applicatable, other then to pull out guns and start hunting... hunting when you aren't going to use it as food is BAD and close to EVIL in my opinion.. sure if you all roast the cats to feed the millions of starving people out there in the world without charging them then I could see it in a much better light... but I dont' imagine that is what is going to be done.

Animals that have grown up in the wild are EXTREMELY hard to tame. The more wilder the species, the harder it is. Feral cats would be pretty hard. However, most stray cats aren't that feral. I dunno about the ones in question. I'd have to see them.
The biggest problem I have with this method is that killing is bad, and that it's a problem ONLY because of the irrisponsibility of humans. Period. That really pisses me off. We shouldn't be killing our problems away. In this case, though, alternatives would be very difficult.

As for the first.. it isn't as easy as say having an already tamed animal, but it ain't impossible.. you just got to treat it... I dunno.. like another living thing worthy of respect perhaps?
Anyways the un-domesticated animal I currently am training(or was before I came down with my cold) is of species never domesticated by man, however my particular specimen, while not raised around many humans, has had human contact.. good human contact. so it nows we aren't cruel and it nows if it behaves itself we behave ourselves etc... but you should see it if I treat it like a normal dog... that thing has SHARP teeth.. i mean ouch... you really gotta watch your step. this thing is thrice the size of any cat I have seen and I wouldn't fear it in a dark alley.. so I would be willing to try and tame a feral cat(ok maybe not.. I really do HATE cats).
