Thats seems like a pretty good level. Im headed to the city of ancients now and the 3 people i usually use are in the low 40s, but then again i tend to train my people alot. Everyone else that i have though is around that level.
Well at the begining of the game i train my Barret and Cloud to Lvl 10.
So Lvl 30-40 seems pretty good.
Well, i dunno. I kinda finished the game with no-one over lvl 35 and in 3 hours. I generally try to do it as fast and as low as i can. It makes it more of a challenge then training.
level 35 is good but you will need to be 50+ to beat a boss on the way up north crater other than that you on about the same as i was
I like Cloud, Tifa, and Yuffie team at the end of disc 1 ^^

Well, my personal best was level 64 with cloud Cid and Tifa (also my persopnal favorite team) but that was when i was 8 and i didnt know where to find the Harp and powered up my characyers beyond belief on wutai, and my god did that take a long ass rtime, but thats just me...
a combo that i liked when i got done with disc 2 was cloud, vincent and redxii...around level 30...that party can easily go thru monsters
I do not think levels are a crucial factor while playing FFVII, since if you have a correct stratagy, then you could beat most bosses, without the appropriate levels.
I think I was in my early 20's, but I did not have a problem throughout the game, even when I defeated Emerald and Ruby weapon at level 60. I despise training my characters, and I never set time aside to train them, but I guess if you want a non-challenging game then you could train a lot, but I don't find it neccessary.
In terms of characters, it's totally irrelevant. There are ultimately very few differences beween them, in actual battle application, and many of these don't manifest themselves until later in the game. To clarify: weapons, Limit Breaks, minor differences in hard stats, and (based on gender) whether one equips the Escort Guard or the Minerva Band form the entirety of all of variance in the characters (as relates to battle). Thus, the ideal party at any point in the game is the party you wish to use. I would recommend using your three most powerful characters; since materia allows for complete customization, ability sets can be transferred and are therefore meaningless.
Your level really doesn't matter all that much. One can finish the entire game at a lower level; one can also level up to 99 by the end of Disc 1. For your purposes, unless trying to meet some particular standard, just go with what works. If you haven't had any real difficulty yet, you're fine. If you're having trouble, feel free to level up a little more. Ultimately, do whatever gives you the most satisfaction in playing the game.
I found that the only purpose to 'leveling up' is to level up your materia. There isn't a single person that could not be decent in using magic, attacking, or anything. In my opinion they should have polarized the character a LOT more than what they did. Barret may be 'bad' with magic, but he STILL doesn't decent enough damage to kill with it. It's unbelievable how all the characters can be so alike.
When you first get Yuffie, she is weak and has low HP. But even that doesn't matter, because she is still strong enough to survive any normal enemy attacks. The slight polarity is almost pointless in the characters. They should have also made the enemies more powerful. FF1-FF6 are so much 'harder' than FF7 it isn't even funny, and even FF6 is considered easy by many.
This is pretty much the bane of some of the later FFs, whereby to encourage customisation, they had to basically remove the central character's roles. It was even worse in FF8, whereby the only real different between characters was limit breaks (barring of course Squall's 255% hit rating). FF9 went back to a more strict role system, and FF10 was kinda like that, but by the end everyone again could be identical with the exception of limits.
I completed the game with Cloud lv60 Barret lv59 and vincent lv60 i was gonna train till lv 99 but it took way too long and to be frank i got bored
I'm at level 50-55 and I'm in disc3! so yeah level 35 is good.
Dont worry about your level throughout the game. The games more fun when the bosses are challenging and if you ever have to much trouble with a particular boss you can always go back and level up.
Final boss? Squad and level don't really matter TOO much.
Load up on powerful spells and multihitters.
The materia system effectively invalidates any individuality the characters have as for as stats and areas of expertise goes, so I just have a habit of picking the characters that have high attacks and look good in the battle screen (or are just cool).
For the last four playthroughs, I've picked Nanaki and Barret to fill out my party. I love Barret's attack animation, and his limit breaks are powerful. Nanaki's level 4 limit is underwhelming to say the least, but if you keep it set at level 3, his good attack power and awesomeness factor make up for it.

when i got to the city of the ancients in disk one, my characters were lvl 60+

I had Cid, Cloud and Red and was about mid 40's at that time
I trained alot as those frog things before you get to the ancient city give loads of EXP
i had cloud at level 48, cid at 47, and barret at level 46
Hey, I got Cloud/vincent/aeris to at least lvl60 in disk one... It's a pain in the ass for a while, but eventually it pays off. You hafta fight lots and lots of giant purple worms.
in the Mideel islands? yea i stayed there for a while also.
i had everyone in there 60s or 50s cloud got up to level 80 once
