Innocent Bear Killed!

Ok, i live in a small rural town of about 2500 people. Today we hit the state news because we had a bear in the middle of town that had climbed into a tree and wouldnt come down. Streets were closed off and news choppers rolled in. All big news that the whole town knew of within the day. But the landowner decided it was a nuisance, so instead of catching and releasing the bear or tranquilizing it. They killed it! I mean what did the bear do? He got lost in a town! WTF Heartless man killed an innocent Bear. :cry: :mad2:

First, I must say I am dually outraged! First off, because I didn't make it on TV, and second off cuz they shot the poor bear. It was SOOOO cute. It wouldn't have been that hard for them to get it down. Those heartless sons of.......

I am speechless and outraged. One of which is a lie. (most likely not the outraged part.)

Sounds like killing the bear was unnecessary. People are assholes.

Has this bear been exposed to human food? If it has, it wouldn't mind going off and grabbing more of it, a hazard towards a community. Anyways, that was a case similar to up here in Alaska. Except this bear got into beer and drank the whole twelve pack. It was drunk, climbed up a tree, and passed out. It was lured down into a cage with a six pack of MGD and some donuts. I haven't heard much of that little alcoholic since then. Perhaps he's out in AA for bears. If it's been overly exposed to human food through garbage, tourists, feeding, then it will go for more. However, I can't really say about this one because I have no idea about it's history.

This happens once every couple of years around here, same with the wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, feral dogs and even the hawks and eagles (the latter of which are released in these parts for protection; tell that to the owner of the trout pond). In some cases these animals DO become threats to people and their livestock, but I still don't think that's reason enough to kill them. I think it's really, really ridiculous, unecessary and cruel to kill an animal just because it's "a nuisance". Grrrr.

It may not have been too bad of an idea. As has been pointed out, the bear might become a threat or a nuisance to the community. Sure, they could have tranquilized it, that would probably have been the better idea, but what would they do with it then? Put it back into the wild, so it could track down another neighborhood? I'm not supporting the shooting, but sometimes you've got to look at both sides of the coin.

It also depends somewhat on what kind of bear this was, and what it's typical diet is.

People hunt bears all the time, are those people evil too?

I mean if it was attacking people or something that'd be one thing...but that's just messed up...it didn't harm anyone.

Yeah i have to wonder too...since when do we hunt for food these days anyway? I mean if it was for food i would think..well sure i guess...(even though its a bear O_o i mean who would want to eat a damn bear?).

Taking both sides of the coin into account it still seems wrong to kill it off. Hes more scared of you than you are of him keeps coming to mind. Tranquilizing him and putting him back in the wild seems much more sensible.

Hunting and eating = ok. Hunting because "hur hur hur I gots a gun what shoots" is not ok. I have friends and family who hunt, and that meat goes to feed their families. I know people who hunt just to kill things just to cut off heads/antlers just to say they could.

The point is that human beings have to realize that no matter wear they live they're going to come in contact with nature some how. If that threatens them and they've no other recourse then it's "ok" to kill. If a bear wanders into a neighborhood and climbs up a tree, maybe they should do the smart thing and just stay the heck away from it until it comes down and leaves. I don't believe in unecessary killing, and I feel this was unecessary.

In some places where I live, you have no choice but to kill animals for survival. If it's not right to kill bears, then it's not right to kill cows or chickens. And it's also not right to kill little bugs.

I just said that. If you're feeding yourself, or defending yourself, then I have no problem with the killing of animals, be they wild or domestic. However, it's wrong to kill something because it interferes with your daily life.

And I don't kill ants, or bugs at all. I take them outside. Same with all the bugs and critters that have ended up in my house/basement.

You must admit there is a certain satisfaction to squishing bugs.

Size of animal is directly proportional to its worth...in most cases.

Kill a billion one celled organisms every time you sit down, or a few
hundred thousand mites when you lie in bed, don't think about it for even
a split second. Kill an ant, whatever, some people do it, some don't, but
nobody really gets pissed about it. Kill a fish, some people will object,
most don't care. Kill a cat, you're a freak. Kill a bear, people post about
their outrage on a forum. A whale washes up on a shore, tens, if not
hundreds of people go to help it back into the sea. :p

Don't take this as me being an ass. I'm one of the illogical bastards who
will catch a wasp and get stung just so it can be released from the house
rather than killing it. Sort of realized the importance of life a few years ago
walking home. Saw an ant, was about to step on it for no reason other
than it stood out and I was walking toward it. Then I stopped and told the
ant he was the luckiest insect in his colony on that day. ;\

History of the Bear

It was a 2 year old cub that was kicked out of its "nest" by its mother and just wondered into town erliear that morning. So it hadnt been a "nuisance" very long at all!

I could go into my whole Animal Rights speech, but I'll just stop it as OMFG! What were those damn people thinking, killing that bear? Were they high or on drugs? Just as easily as they shot it, they could have tranqued it and put it back where it had orginally came from. I want to Bear Foundation to come and shoot whoever killed the bear. I am totally pissed off right now

someone just told me "it was too small to be tranqued. it would've killed it." WTF? does that make any sense. can't you get different doses? and if it was TOO small to be tranqued, then how much harm could it have been? sigh/grrr.

Pretty much agree with you there. I express no outrage about this, because it's just a bear. If it were a human on the other hand......

Tranquilizing an animal usually doesn't make it much safer, or better protected. If they had tranqued it, it would have fallen out of the tree and possibly hurt itself--I know somebody that has seen video of a bear being tranqued, falling out of the tree, bouncing off (and out of) the trampoline that they had set up for it to land softly on, and snapping its neck.

Plus, a groggy bear is a dangerous bear.

Optium--I agree with you, but you forgot about cuteness. You kill a possum, nobody cares, but you kill a cat, and you're a monster. Catch a rat and you're a hero, but step on a hampster and you're Satan incarnate. I still haven't figured out how the hell...dammit, I forgot their names..."sea cows"...Manitees. That's it. Those things are uglier'n hell, I don't know how people can see them as cute, or want to protect them any more than anything else. Or the dolphins that used to get taken up in tuna nets. If tuna get caught up in any other nets, does anybody care? No, because tuna are ugly.

A dolphins also a very intelligent animal and tunas just a fish. If I was living with a small child I certainly wouldnt want a stray rat anywhere near it. Some people have rats for pets but theyre much less dangerous and diesease free. But majority of the rats people have to deal with are stray vermin causing damage to your house, endangering your kids etc. Most cats though are friendly household cats and relatively harmless and the same goes for hamsters. If I had a pet rat and someone killed it Id still be pretty annoyed. Thats bear didnt seem to be of much harm. Just as Sasquatch said bothersome to get out of the tree but theyre would have been ways to get around that Im sure.
