what were you doing when.....

you all know the saying (its not really one.....just didn't know what to put!) "everyone remembers what they were doing the day the berlin wall came down"
well i was thinking, as that was such a long time ago there must be a new one, for this generation.
after watching a thing on TV i kinda thought it would be this
"what were you doing the day Princess Diana died"
at the time i don't think i was too bothered (me being the evil little teenager i was). i was in my room and my younger brother ran up to tell me. i'd just moved out from the room me and my sister shared....
now i feel really sad about it.
so i'll ask the question
"what were you doing the day Princess Diana died?"


please no horrid comments like "i was driving in france" thats just cruel and nasty.

I ran down stairs and turned on the TV, and found out. I shouted upstairs the news and my Mum went "Really?" Then I got my brekfast and went to school.

I was still only a kid.

I think that the question for our generation will be "what were you doing when 9/11 happened?"

It's one of those moments that defines our generation.

Anyway, I was watching cartoons on TV when it was interrupted by the news that Princess Diana had been in a car accident and died. I remember feeling absolutely shocked. Princesses aren't supposed to die ya know?

I have no clue what I was doing when Diana died. I could hardly care less, too. I do remember on 9/11 I was off work and slept in. I woke up at around noon and went to check the monday night football score on espn.com and instead got a picture of the burning building. I was like "what kind of prank is this?"

Diana dying? I was asleep as I was 11 and it happened really late at night, and then my dad told me in the morning (I do believe it was a Saturday?) but I didn't really care.

As for 9/11, I was at school so I didn't really know about it, but one guy who went home for lunch knew about it and informed us all that "Israel have bombed America". And when I came home the first thing I saw on TV were scared people covered in dust running away, leading me to believe it was just a bomb at first.

I don't remember what happened with Princess Diana died either o_0 I don't even think I knew she died until days after... shows how in touch I was ^_^ I was in class when 9/11 happened.

I was in a car with some fat guy driving. He pulled over and started crying. I didn't understand, so I went and brought a burger and a milkshake.

As for Diana -- no clue about where I was when she died, but I was working on the day of the funeral, a whole bunch of us watched on our lunch break.

9/11 -- I was off work and at home. My dad was getting ready for work and for some reason was watching CNN. Anyway they were showing the smoke from the first crash and everybody on TV was like "We aren't sure if this was an accident". I remember looking at the pictures and thinking "accident? how can someone 'accidentaly' hit a building when there aren't any clouds or anything?" Anyway just about then I saw the second plane, and then I knew what was going on. :cry:

I was watching The Pretender on NBC when Princess Diana died, and they interrupted the show during the climax! I was fairly mad at the time. They cancelled that show, too...it was so good! :(

And when 9/11 happened I was sitting in 8th grade science class. We turned the TV on after the first plane hit, and watched the second one hit while a kid named Jeff said "Whoa, cool!" He was always a stupid one.

when 9/11 happened me and my friend went to his house to get ready for the next day at college. we ran downstairs singing "digimon digital monsters" as we were about to watch it on tv. we turned it on and saw the towers falling. we thought it was a film and started moaning thinking they had canncelled our show. we turned it off and went to play pokemon. it wasn't until his mum came home and told us we realsised it was real....

when Diana died i was sleeping ( it did happen ay 3 in the morning), my brother rushed up and told me at 8 "Rory, Diana's died" and i was like "Who" ^^

anyway when 9/11 happened i was at my friends house playing playstation games so we didnt know what had happened, we knew that a plane had crashed into the world trade centre, we didnt know it was a terrorist attack but some kids outside told us stuff like new york was on fire, and the pentagon had been blown up, kids eh. :choc:

9/11 I was at college. My history class had just ended and on the way out some guy got a thingy on his pager and was like, "huh, someone just flew a plane into the world trade center". I was just like, "Yeah, okay." Then while I was waiting for my art class someone sat down beside me on a bench and said something like how crazy this all was. I didn't know what he was talking about. He told me all about it and I was like, "OH". Then they cancelled classes the rest of the day and I was happy cause I really hated my art class. I went home and me and my best friend changed the spark plugs in our cars. Then we went by the river and threw rocks in it for awhile.

The Death of Princess Diana: I was at Claire's house playing ghostbusters and sonic 2.

The Eleventh of September: Geography was cancelled so Towns and I went to eoff. Yeah.

When Diana dies I think I was in bed asleep. I think she died at night, right? I was too young to remember. When 9/11 happened I was on my way home from school in the back of a car with some other kids and we heard it on the radio but I figured Id heard it wrong or something or that it wasnt that big of a deal. Then I went inside and saw it was taking up every tv channel and got a better idea of what had happened.

Diana: I was watching tv of some sort. I was at my dad's house...very young...and, matter of factly, that night was the first night I ever played Final Fantasy VII...infact, any Final Fantasy! But i was too young to appreciate it like I do today!

9/11: because I am over in Aus. when we heard of it, it was early morning the next day. My nan rang us, and we watched the news, and then we had to go to school...half the class was late and didn't get in trouble cause their excuse was 'watching the news'

Diana: I was asleep. Fast asleep.

9/11: I was taking a shower when Vince banged on the shower door. *blushes* I remember it so vividly. He thrust his head in the shower door and calmly told me the Twin Towers had collapsed; even though I was staring at him angrily despite being naked.
*sighs* We hadn't got the news, so they had already collapsed by the time he told me.

When Diana died... No clue. I was probably sleeping. :D I didn't really care either.
9/11: I must have been in school or something. :D I just remember everyone talking about it. And me, not being a 'lets watch the news' person, had no idea what they were talking about. :D

Diana: No clue.
9/11: Asleep during the first part. My mom woke me up for work and said something like "A plane hit the World Trade Center" and I was like "What dumb ass did that?" then I watched the news as I got ready and the second one hit and of course everyone knew that it wasnt an accident. We kept up on it during work that day.

Diana: I was watching TV when it happened, the news came on and over took all the other programs. So I watched TV some more to find out what had happened etc. I can't remember what I was doing earlier in the day though.

9/11: I think I went shopping that day, I went for a walk, went on eBay and sold stuff and then I turned on the TV and it was all over the TV. Every channel it was on. It took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on and I was stuck to the TV for half the night.

Diana: ....no clue.....

9/11: I came home from school, it was a really hard day.... I wanted to ask my brother for something and met him in front of the TV. When I saw the pictures of New York I thought World War III broke out. I still remember this desperate paralysis flowing through my mind..... war....

Diana....I don't recall. But on 9/11 I was in Geometry, jr year of high school and then Mrs. Denson came in and started talking about the world ending or something, and then the bell rang and I was walking to my next class and I walked by the library and looked in and the tv was on with a bunch of people watching it as a plane slammed into a building. I was like "WTF".

i was quite angry as i woke up on that saturday ready to watch live and kicking and the next instalment of spiderman, BUT NO THEY HAD CANCELED IT because princess diana died, so i switched the tv off and went back to slept. EMPATHY

I don't remember about Princess Diana, I do remembet about 9/11 though.
I was taking a bath and I heard my father saynig "it's like a civil war". But at the moment I din't undestand.
After a while I came aout of the bathroom and then I couldn't help but know. Everybody was talking about it.

Thats really... wait hold on a minute... you were watchin Digimon? At a college age?! ^_^

Diana - I think my mother informed me, as I only saw it on the news ater. It did not really bother me that much, as I was young and ignorant. I only realised the great things she had done to contribute to humanity a few days later.

9/11 - I came home from school, and my mother told me to turn on the TV, so I did (slightly confounded at the importance) and I viewed the burning tower. Shortly after, I watched the second plane strike the building, and continued to watch for about an hour or so.

Yet again, I was not personally concerned at the time, besides the initial shock, yet as I slowly came to understand the impact, I realised the lives lost, and families broken.

This is quite bad humour, but I will state it in any event:

A few days ago in Geography class, we were watching a documentary on earthqakes, when our teacher suddenly statedL "this is an important section, keep watching"

And then the video started crackling, and was disrupted for the next few minutes. xD

When the audia visual reappeared, the T.V. stated:

"Earthquakes can cause serious damage on America's economy, and an earthquake is long over-due and could strike at any time.

If this were to happen, America's Twin Towers, would be completely destroyed."

The class burst out laughing.

Diana- my mom told me she died, and i replied with "so what? people die everyday. who cares?" pretty ruthless, but i was only a little kid.

9/11- i woke up, and my mom was watching it on the T.V. she said "omg kyle, a friggin plane just flew into the twin towers!!" and i was sleepy, so i replied with something like "oh really? that sucks." (the knowledge didnt really absorb into me at that moment.) later in the day at school, they were talking about it, and i was like "wait a minute, a FRICKIN PLANE FLEW INTO THE TWIN TOWERS!?!?!" and thne everyone looked at me. not my finest moment.

OKC memorial bombing-Just in class doing work then all of a sudden booooooooom *earthquake*.

Princess Diana I really don't remember I only heard about it at school later.
9/11 I was in confirmation class when the lower grade teacher just brought his whole class into our room and flipped on the tv.

We did this in psychology. Flashbulb memory yadda yadda.

I was coming down the stairs in my PJ's when I heard some heavy conversation in the sitting room, and one of my sister's told me she died as I was walking down the stairs. Then I just kinda stopped and added it all up. At that age though, it didn't mean alot to me sadly, but I am much more aware of the scope of the incident now.

9/11 - I'd just come home from school. Funnily enough, while I was turning the key in the front door, I was staring in through my sitting room window and thought my mum was watching some kind of action film or something. When I found out what it really was, I was wishing she had been. :(

Diana: I got told by my somebody, and I wasn't really bothered by it, I was young and I really didn't understand much of what was going on.
9/11: It happened while I was at school (as I live in the UK), and when we got out of school I found out as I got in my car to go home and it was on the radio. I watched and found out about it all on TV all night too.

Princess Diana, think I was just watching television at the time and found out.

September 11th. Well, I was in school at time, Science lesson. We were doing structures at the time seeing how much weight a cardboard bridge could hold before it would collapse by building it in certain ways. The fact that our bridges were collapsing on that day, during that afternoon, is why it sticks in my mind...

I found out on the way home, got a lift off Dad and got told a plane or two had hit the WTC. Got home turned on Sky News and saw the first pictures.

When I found out Diana had died i was cleaning my house.

When 9/11 happened I was going to practice with my (then) band.

I can't for the life of me remember what I was doing when princess Diana died, but I wasn't much concerned about it. Kudos to the woman for using her fame for some good purposes, but her death didn't hit me any harder than hearing of anyone else dying.

On 9-11, I was headed to class, and after that I'd be driving from the college to work. I had a tape in the radio, but I'd listened to it about three times by then and was bored with it, so I clicked on the radio instead, and heard about the first plane. At work, every time I got a break I'd go out to my truck in the parking lot and turn on the radio to see how the search for survivors was going and how soon we would find these SOBs and nuke them.

I honestly changed the channel, because I dont care for that women..... I was a young kid.

I don't remember what I was doing when Princess Di died.

I woke up in the morning on 9/11 and turned on the TV to see a plane crashing into the side of the twin towers on recorded broadcast. At first, I wondered what the hell I was seeing . . . but they kept showing it over and over again. I've never been too concerned with the twin towers before, so I didn't really know what these buildings were for . . . but when the building came down, I freaked out. I never thought a plane could decimate such a massive building. Then they broadcast the second plane. Hol--CRAP!! What the hell!?
When my parents got home, they instantly took over the TV since they had been hearing about it all day on the radio. I don't remember anything else from that day.

When Princess Diana died? I wasn't too happy. I was a young dude back then, and I heard that she helped a lot of people around the world, and so I was sad that someone who helps others passed away.

Diana: I most likely was sleeping (I live in France, it happened late at night), and found out the next day.

9/11: I was in class/test, and a Ph.D student came in to tell us he heard about it on the radio. We didn't rush to the radio and just kept on with the class/test, but it was quite the only topic of discussion around dinner.

Berlin wall: I was watching it fall live on the TV when it happened.

She died? Oh yeah! I was in class...I think it might have been math or english.

9/11: I was sitting in English class withmy teacher, Mr. Dennis and my class and all of a sudden, we hear over the loud speakers that the Twin Towers had just been bombed. Please calm down. And I'm looking around, confused and thinking, "Wtf? why is everyone so worried? What is going on?" I was in sixth grade and didn't get it. I don't think that I had even heard of the Twin towers then. I was on my way home and people are talking about it. We couldn't get on the subway or anything, and I didn't understand until later that night when I got home and school the next day. And then I was like, "Oh! Are you SERIOUS! Well...that's stupid. They might as well have bombed the whitehouse." I'm serious, I said and thought this.

Berlin wall: I was then too young... I think I was suckin my thumbs, hih. :p

9/11: It was school day for me. But I heard everything from TV. Strange that my friend just on that day draw a picture where two skyscrapers were crashing down before she even heard what have happen. Scary...

Diana: I remember that day forever. It was morning and I was watching TV. Suddenly there was a text which was telling that Princess Diana is dead. I did't really knew her but I thought she must been important because my favourite programme was interrupted beacuse of that! :mad:

I'd like to point out that you would have been alive when Diana died, because if you were at school on the 11th of September 2001, you would have been born at least 5 years earlier, and Diana died in 1997, 4 years earlier.

I was helping my grandpa draft a fantasy football team. I think we took Steve Young first overall.

September 11... I remember I was one foot out the door to go to school when I heard it on the radio. I had headphones I always used to use because it was so early in the morning (6 AM) and so quiet, and when I heard the news, I had to go back inside to see if it wasn't some kind of joke.

It wasn't, of course, as I turned on the TV to see the first tower fall. I remember the whole thing being very surreal, because the rest of my family was still asleep. Then, when I got on the city bus, I must've been the only person to know because there was no radio and everyone else seemed to be going about like it was any other day. Of course, by the time I got to school, it was pretty much all over the place, but for that little while... it was eerie.

It's funny. When I read the thread title, 9/11 and the news of Diana's death were the first things that came to my mind.

Diana - I was in France at the time, actually. We had just moved there. My family were staying in a long-stay hotel while we were looking for a house to rent. I was in bed, and I heard it on the television in the next room.

9/11 - I was in the chemistry lab at school, working on my IB project. My friend heard it from his mum, who called him to tell him about it.

Ok, thanks, I guess I was at school then. I don't remember when she died, I was 7, and I can't believe I don't remember anything... I did a report on her in 3rd grade though... I still don't remember! XD My memory sucks.

I barely knew who Princess Diana was when I was in third grade, so I don't remember.

as for september 11th, I was riding the bus thinking that it was going to be a sucky day:P my parents weren't at home when I left for school, my friend was feeling sick, etc etc.

Princess Diana died when I was 13, just before I entered high school. I remember the day. It was the end of August, and most of the kids in my neighborhood were packing up to leave for the winter (my neighborhood is mostly summer people, I'm one of the few Cape Cod year-rounders) so I was helping my friends from Germany next door move their furniature. I grabbbed the end of one chair, and one of my friends, Chris, told me, "Did you hear? The Princess is dead."

Now, I had heard of Princess Di a bit, but only in passing. Not being European however, I was completely caught off-guard by the out of context remark of "The Princess." I couldn't think of anyone I should know by that title. "Who's the pincess?" I asked. Then, once they explained to me it was the English Princess Diana, I got it. I found it sad that I only really learned about her life and what she had accomplished after the fact. She was a remarkable woman.

I also remember the day the Berlin Wall fell when I was 7, (I watched it on TV with my parents, everybody was on there was dancing and crying and breaking things down with hammers. Since my best friends (our summer next door neighbors) lived in Germany most of the year, it was a big deal for them and us.

And, to really date myself, I remember the day the Challenger space shuttle blew up in 1986. I was 5, and wanted to be an astronaut in the worst way. I followed the program and knew everything about it, and I envied Christa, the school teacher who was on the mission. So of course I watched the launch, and the subsequent horrible explosion. I learned a lot about life that day.

However, if you want a defining moment for our generation, along the lines of "where where you when JFK was shot" that our parents have, it is and will be 9/11.

I will never forget that one. It was my sophomore year of college, and I was two months away from my 19th birthday. I was a gorgeous fall day. Our school's president had just left on an important trip to NYC, and I was putting off checking the callback list for my dance company after a week long of gruelling audtions. I told myself I'd look after class. I had African American literature at 8 am, and had a long, normal, lengthy discussion about the book we were reading (I forget the title, but it was about a guy who became a pullman porter). We had no idea what was going on outside our sunlit classroom. When class got out at 9:55, I had only 5 minutes before my theatre class at 10, so of course, I rushed out to the courtyard to scribble the rest of my homework together. I noticed a TV had been rolled into the lobby of the building and a lot of people were watching it, but lots of news events caused that, nothing big, so I paid no attention.

I finished my homework and dashed back to my theatre class (ironically, the class was entitled Modern Tragedy) before my professor got there. There were only a few people there, and we remarked how beautiful it was out, and a lot of people must have skipped to tan outside. Then my professor strode in, intent. Before he said anything, a kid from NYC ran in, a whirlwind. "I'm sorry, I can't be here, I can't call my family, I don't know what's going on, I have to find my parents!" and ran out of the room. All I could think was, What's his problem? Then a few more people came in, crying. That's when my professor spoke. It was appropriate somehow that it was him, the great actor he is, the prof we thought of in the theatre major as a second father. Almost in tears, he said, "We have studied tragedy together only to find ourselves among the worst that we may ever see. Like our stories, we are hurt. We will be angry, and we will blame, and we will want to understand why. But today, today is not a day to think. It is not a day to understand, or to be angry, or to forgive. It is not a day to ask why. That will come later. Today is a day to grab onto everybody you love and hold them tighter than you've ever held them before. So I think, I think that's what you should all do right now. Go find your families. Go." And he started to cry and ran out. Tears were running down my cheeks and I still hadn't a clue what the hell was going on. But I knew it was big.

Slowly I walked downstairs to the lobby, people rushing past me crying, screaming, everything. More rushing as a approached the lobby with the TV. For the first time that morning, I watched what was happening on the screen. I watched the plane crash. The burning. The *God* people holding hands and jumping to their deaths. And the falling, like a scene from Independance Day. . . when they showed it fall, a kid wearing a Yankees cap ran screaming out of the lobby, kicked open the doors to the courtyard with his foot, and fell to his knees sobbing on the ground. My professor ran up to him and held him in his arms. The tears were on my face, but they were of shock. For the people around me, the mayhem. I walked back to my dorm in a daze, like a robot. I got there and it hit me. I called all my friends who lived in downtown New York. They were out giving blood.

My German friends called me. They were living in Washington DC now, only a few miles from the Pentagon. When the plane hit that, they weren't allowed to leave their homes as the National Guardsmen poured through the streets.

We had a campus meeting at 4. The bell tolled. We all held hands and sat in the setting sun of the beautiful day. We had a mike, and people said everything they thought and felt. There was a lot of love. Our president was okay. She was out giving blood at ground zero.

Now it was six, and someone asked me in passing if I had made dance callbacks. I had forgotten all about it, then realized if I had, I had to be there at 6:30. I ran to the studio door to check the list. I made it. I started jumping up and down and screaming - this thing I had wanted for so long finally came true. My dance careear had begun, it was the happiest day of my life. . . and then I felt like the biggest asshole on the planet. My country was having one of its worst days in history, the people I loved around me were in such pain, and I had the gall to be estactic. It was so bipolar. And I felt so guilty. I'll never forget it.

I would have been about eight or nine at the time, I just remember waking up and hearing my Grandma and Mam discussing it. I had no idea who she was at the time, but the people in Spain did, I was on holiday there and I remember hearing they were just standing in the streets crying. It makes me sad thinking about it.
When 9/11 happened I was in class but it was all over the news when I came home to my Grandma's and I wasn't sure whether it was a film or not at first. People still weren't sure whether or not it was an accident, so it must have been before the second plane hit.

When Diana died, I was sleeping. I didn't even know who she was until after she died... =/

9/11... I was probably sitting in a classroom doing some kind of work or something. I found out the day after when I read it in the paper.

Diana: I guess I was sleeping. I was really quite young then, but my mummie is/was a fan of Diana's so we had to sit down and watch the funeral for three whole days. Meeh.

9/11: I was sleeping. When I woke up, my mummie told me. I didn't believe her, but when I went to school and this loudmouth was blabbing about it. When I got home, I just switched on CNN and watched the WTC's crumble down again and again and again...

Scary days. :(

Diana: I was 16 and I had just come home from a movie with a friend and found out that night.
9/11: I was sleeping (I was actually supposed to be in class but I forgot to set my alarm) and I saw it on the news in the cafeteria.

Princess Diana: I was flipping through channels when I saw a messed up limo. "Cool!" I thought, seeing as how I was just a little boy. When I heard a princess died, I felt bad, then changed the channel.

9/11: I was in school, 8th grade. All the teachers were low-key about it and went about a normal school day. It was especially cloudy that day and the clouds were very, very dark. I found out in third period French class what had actually happened. I then realized that what was in the sky wasn't clouds, but smoke and ash from the towers. Let me state that I live in New Jersey. The northern part of New Jersey, where it'd take around an hour and a half to get to where the towers were. I saw my classmates mourn over friends and family lost in the act, felt bad for them, then felt nothing more. To be honest, I was completely indifferent to the events that happened. I walked home at the end of school, flipped on the tube, and watched the third plane hit the towers.

I think I was only about 7. I was on holiday. I didn't find out til the next day andeI didn't really know much about her.

9/11 I had just come home from school and my dad was watching the news, and I was watching TV with him when the second plane hit... we actually saw it happen. It was scary.

I have a bad memory..
So i havnt a clue what i was doing, i think i remember that day.. But I didnt watch it, i found out of my Mum.

I was a little angry that Princess Diana got all the media attention and Mother Teresa got very little. Not that Di shouldn't have been covered or was any less important than Mother Teresa, but Mother Teresa should have gotten just as much coverage. Plus, there was the questions about how/why Di died when it was pretty obvious about Mother Teresa.

Obvious one but when we got Peace here, the Good Friday Agreement was signed & the IRA and Loyalists called a ceasation of their struggle on 10 April 1998. I was at my dads. The whole Falls Road errupted. Cars were beeping horns everyone was in the streets. A weird but memorable moment.

I don't remember what I was doing when it was announced that she died. I was only 9 years old. I don't remember much from back then (I have a horrid memory for some reason)

But I do remember watching her funeral and crying. When I was a child, I looked up to royalty...
That's not really the case now. I mainly view them as people who I don't have any emotional attatchment to. I like some of them, but I don't know any enough to judge. So, I am pretty neutral.

Yet back then it was a BIG deal to me.
And...
I remember the sunset that day as well.
It was a really pink-ish sunset...eh...that I cannot really describe.
I have the picture inside my head, though. It's pretty clear.

And 9/11...
I was 14 years old and I was blow drying my hair when my mom came in and told me about what happened. At first I didn't understand what the big deal was. I thought that some plane had just accidently crashed into some random building (I was so ignorant back then). Even when I found out what really had happened, I didn't understand what the big deal was...or at least I acted that way. I do remember one night in which I felt extreme anger, but I quickly blocked it and locked it away somewhere inside of me. I acted like I didn't care for a long time.
