FF Character Tournament Madness! Winner revealed!
Welcome to the second installment of the Official Eyes on Final Fantasy Character Tournament, or April Madness if you prefer. This year we will have 4 divisions, each representing a certain set of games. No more FFVI characters hogging up the later rounds. The divisions are:
Old School (FFI-III, Mystic Quest)
Glory Days (FFIV-VI)
Teen Angst (FFVII-IX)
Games Spuuky Hasn't Played (FFX, X-2, XI, Tactics, Tactics Advance, Crystal Chronicles)
Before we get things underway, we have a few spots left to fill, and a once in a lifetime opportunity for four lucky characters to make the big dance. This is known as the play-in round. Eight characters will battle it out in one-on-one matchups for the 16 seeds in this preliminary match. The winners never end up doing anything, but it provides for an emotional moment for some of these characters who always dreamed of making this tournament.
As always, vote by selecting one name out of each lettered pair. This is a multpile selection poll, so you can vote in as many or as few matches as you like. Use any criteria you like for making your selection: power, personality, importance to story, personal preference, etc.
Rounds will last a couple days. Here is an unfinished bracket for those of you who want to get a head start on your office pools.

April Madness! (FF Character Tournament) Glory Days Division - Round 2
Here are the results of Round 1 of the Glory Days Division:
1 Celes (VI) - ||||\||||\| 11
16 Cyan (VI) - ||||\ 5
8 Bartz (V) - ||| 3
9 Shadow (VI) - ||||\||||\||||\ 15
5 Locke (VI) - ||||\||||\||| 13
12 Edge (IV) - ||||\| 6
4 Cecil (IV) - ||||\||||\||| 13
13 Reina (V) - |||| 4
6 Edgar (VI) - ||||\||||\| 11
11 Faris (V) - ||||\| 6
3 Terra (VI) - ||||\||||\|||| 14
14 Rosa (IV) - || 2
7 Kain (IV) - ||||\||||\||| 13
10 Mog (VI) - |||| 4
2 Rydia (IV) - ||||\||||\||||\| 16
15 Krile (V) - | 1
All but one higher seed advanced. On to round two. Here are the matchups:
1 Celes (VI) vs.
9 Shadow (VI)
5 Locke (VI) vs.
4 Cecil (IV)
6 Edgar (VI) vs.
3 Terra (VI)
7 Kain (IV) vs.
2 Rydia (IV)
Can Rydia, Cecil and Kain hang with the overpowered FFVI Conference?
April Madness! (FF Character Tournament) Old School Division - Round 1
Here are the results of Round 2 of the Glory Days Division:
1 Celes (VI) - ||||\||||\||||\|||| 19
9 Shadow (VI) - ||||\||||\||||\| 16
5 Locke (VI) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\ 20
4 Cecil (IV) - ||||\||||\||||\|| 17
6 Edgar (VI) - ||||\||||\|||| 14
3 Terra (VI) - ||||\||||\||||\||| 18
7 Kain (IV) - ||||\||||\||||\|| 17
2 Rydia (IV) - ||||\||||\||||\|||| 19
So Celes, Locke, Terra, and Rydia will advance to the Sweet 16! On to a new division, the Old School Division, where this great series got its start. Even if most of the characters weren't much for personality development, they were still useful nonetheless. Round 1:
1 Ninja (I) vs.
16 Josef (II)
8 Onion Kid (III) vs.
9 Ninja (III)
5 Black Wizard (I) vs.
12 White Wizard (I)
4 Knight (I) vs.
13 Phoebe (MQ)
6 Gus (II) vs.
11 Sage (III)
3 Summoner (III) vs.
14 Red Wizard (I)
7 Maria (II) vs.
10 Lionhart (II)
2 Frionel (II) vs.
15 Gordon (II)
Some good matchups already. White Wizard/Black Wizard and a sibling rivalry with Maria/Lionhart.
Please support the best character from FFII

April Madness! (FF Character Tournament) Games Spuuky Hasn't Played Division - Round1
Here are the results of Round 2 of the Old School Division:
1 Ninja (I) - ||||\||||\||||\| 16
9 Ninja (III) - ||||\||||\||| 13
5 Black Wizard (I) - ||||\||||\||| 13
4 Knight (I) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\ 20

3 Summoner (III) - ||||\||||\||||\ 15
7 Maria (II) - ||||\||||\||||\|||| 19
2 Frionel (II) - ||||\||||\ 10
The original Ninja managed to hang on, while Maria beating Frionel is the biggest upset so far. These characters will advance to the Sweet 16 and join their fellow cartridge friends.
Now we swtich gears and move on to a potluck division of sorts, the Games Spuuky Hasn't Played Division. Spuuky is a busy man, as you could imagine, and so doesn't have time to play some of the later games in the series, but hopefully some of you have played them! I fully expect FFX dominance in this division, even though Tactics had some great characters. Round 1:
1 Ramza (T) vs.
16 Agrias (T)
8 Marche (TA) vs.
9 Red Mage/Ninja (RDM/NIN) (XI)
5 Rikku (X) vs.
12 Paladin/Warrior (PLD/WAR) (XI)
4 Orlandu (T) vs.
13 Male Clavat (CC)
6 Paine (X-2) vs.
11 Beowulf (T)
3 Yuna (X) vs.
14 Monteblanc (TA)
7 Lulu (X) vs.
10 Mustadio (T)
2 Auron (X) vs.
15 Tidus (X)
Vote by selecting one character from each lettered pair in the poll. You can vote in as few or as many of the matches as you like.

Seems the top half is Tactics heavy while the bottom half FFX heavy. Let's see who can last! Vote for one name in each lettered pair in the poll.

April Madness! (FF Character Tournament) Teen Angst Division - Round 1
Results are in for the Games Spuuky Hasn't Played Division, Round 2:
1 Ramza (T) - ||||\||||\||||\|| 17
8 Marche (TA) - |||| 4
5 Rukku (X) - ||||\||||\ 10
4 Orlandu (T) - ||||\||||\| 11
6 Paine (X-2) - ||||\|||| 9
3 Yuna (X) - ||||\||||\|| 12
7 Lulu (X) - ||||\| 6
2 Auron (X) - ||||\||||\||||\ 15
The Sweet 16 is almost complete. Now we proceed to the final division, saving the best for last, and by best I mean most popular, the Teen Angst Division! That's right, there are very few FF fans that have not gotten a taste of these games, or at least whined about how bad they are. By far the most popular set, FFVII-IX made this series a household name, and to think that the secret was to merely include 3D graphics and more young characters complaining about their problems. Enough talk, on to the matchups:
1 Vivi (IX) vs.
16 Selphie (VIII)
8 Quistis (VIII) vs.
9 Garnet (IX)
5 Cid (VII) vs.
12 Freya (IX)
4 Zidane (IX) vs.
13 Zell (VIII)
6 Red XIII (VII) vs.
11 Quina (IX)
3 Vincent (VII) vs.
14 Irvine (VIII)
7 Aeris (VII) vs.
10 Rinoa (VIII)
2 Squall (VIII) vs.
15 Yuffie (VII)
This round features the battle of the Zs and a faceoff between two heroines. Vote by selecting one name out of each lettered pair in the poll (should I still have to say this every time?).
April Madness! (FF Character Tournament) Teen Angst Division - Round 2
I just found out my boyfriend was killed, but this new guy is really cute and I think I'm in love with him. Anyway, here are the results of round 1 of the Teen Angst Division:
1 Vivi (IX) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\||| 23
16 Selphie (VIII) - ||||\||||\ 10
8 Quistis (VIII) - ||||\||||\||||\| 16
9 Garnet (IX) - ||||\||||\||||\|| 17
5 Cid (VII) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\| 21
12 Freya (IX) - ||||\||||\| 11
4 Zidane (IX) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\ 20
13 Zell (VIII) - ||||\||||\||| 13
6 Red XIII (VII) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\ 20
11 Quina (IX) - ||||\||||\| 11
3 Vincent (VII) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\||| 24
14 Irvine (VIII) - ||||\|| 7
7 Aeris (VII) - ||||\||||\ 10
10 Rinoa (VIII) - ||||\||||\||||\||| 18
2 Squall (VIII) - ||||\||||\||||\||| 18
15 Yuffie (VII) - ||||\||||\|||| 14
Being a princess is so hard sometimes. And why the hell is Red XIII so popular? Man I'm so angry. Now on to round 2:
1 Vivi (IX) vs.
9 Garnet (IX)
5 Cid (VII) vs.
4 Zidane (IX)
6 Red XIII (VII) vs.
3 Vincent (VII)
10 Rinoa (VIII) vs.
2 Squall (VIII)
What will happen when lovers quarrel? You decide! Meanwhile, I will go back to whining about the false memories my employers implanted in me.
April (now May) Madness! (FF Character Tournament) Spoony 16 Round!!
I don't really feel like it, but here are the results of Teen Angst Division: Round 2. Whatever.
1 Vivi (IX) - ||||\||||\| 11
8 Garnet (IX) - ||||\||||\ 10
5 Cid (VII) - ||||\||||\| 11
4 Zidane (IX) - ||||\||||\ 10
6 Red XIII (VII) - ||||\|||| 9
3 Vincent (VII) - ||||\||||\|| 12
10 Rinoa (VIII) - ||||\||| 8
2 Squall (VIII) - ||||\||||\|||| 14
What a close round! We now have all we need for the Sweet 16, but since this is FF I'm going to call it the SPOONY 16. This is where it gets good. Here are your matchups:
Old School Division:
1 Ninja (I) vs.
4 Knight (I)
3 Summoner (III) vs.
7 Maria (II)
A couple of original FF powerhouses collide in what will be a hard and long battle. Will Maria or the first Summoner be able to take advantatage of the survivor?
Glory Days Division:
1 Celes (VI) vs.
5 Locke (VI)
3 Terra (VI) vs.
2 Rydia (IV)
A couple of lovers tangle (oh come on, you know they dig each other), while Rydia tries to stay alive as the last remianing non-FFVI character in this very strong division.
Teen Angst Division:
1 Vivi (IX) vs.
5 Cid (VII)
3. Vincent (VII) vs.
2 Squall (VIII)
I'd say this one is wide open. Vivi surpirsed me by getting a 1 seed, but this will be his true test, going up against the very popular Cid Highwind. Meanwhile, we have a couple brooding characters taking each other on in this aptly named division.
Games Spuuky Hasn't Played Division
1 Ramza (T) vs.
4 Orlandu (T)
3 Yuna (X) vs.
2 Auron (X)
As expected, Tactics and FFX dominated this one. We have a couple in game showdowns here, to see who is the best from their game once and for all. Two focal characters going up against two very popular swordsmen.
Voting will last three days this time. Remember to select one character from each lettered pair in the poll.

FF Character Tournament Madness! Excalibur Eight Round (Division Finals)
1 Ninja (I) - ||||\||||\ 11
4 Knight (I) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\ 20
3 Summoner (III) - ||||\||||\| 11
7 Maria (II) - ||||\||||\||||\|||| 19
1 Celes (VI) - ||||\||||\||||\ 15
5 Locke (VI) - ||||\||||\|||| 14
3 Terra (VI) - ||||\||||\|| 12
2 Rydia (IV) - ||||\||||\||||\|||| 19
1 Vivi (IX) - ||||\||||\||||\||| 18
5 Cid (VII) - ||||\||||\||| 13
3 Vincent (VII) - ||||\||||\||||\||| 18
2 Squall (VIII) - ||||\||||\||| 13
1 Ramza (T) - ||||\||||\|| 12
4 Orlandu (T) - ||||\||||\||||\ 15
3 Yuna (X) - ||||\||| 8
2 Auron (X) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\|| 22
We move on to the divisional finals, aka the EXCALIBUR Eight! These characters will battle it out to be the best of their era, and gain a spot in the Final Four.
Old School Division
4 Knight (I) vs.
7 Maria (II)
Maria has had an impressive run, beating a few higher seeds in the last rounds, but she faces her biggest challenge in the powerful Knight. It is the classic struggle of personality vs. strength that you will only get in the Old School Division. The first FF heroine vs. the first FF hero! The Knight's incredible power and defense, might be too much. Of course, with the FFII levelling system, Maria could be turned into a similar type of character, but that doesn't really fit her. Give her a bow and throw her in the back row tossing out Fire11 spells, that's what I say.
Glory Days Division
1 Celes (VI) vs.
2 Rydia (IV)
Girl power reigns supreme in this tough division. A valiant effort from Rydia, she has been able to hang with the big kids, aka the FFVI crew, but now she has one more to deal with. After dumping last year's runner up, Celes hopes to continue her good fortune against the Caller of Mist. Will Runic be able to stop Bahamut's Megaflare? The winner of this match has a very good chance of making it to the finals, going up against the weaker Old School division, so this is great chance for both ladies to make it big!
Teen Angst Division
1 Vivi (IX) vs.
3 Vincent (VII)
The battle of the Vs! Vivi surprised me with a number 1 seed, but he has stepped up to the plate so far. Now he faces the enigmatic Vincent. These characters are both the result of expiriments, so there might be some kinship here. They also both attack from afar, Vivi with his powerful black magic, and Vincent with a shiny gun. Could be a good match. I mean, whatever.
Games Spuuky Hasn't Played Division
4 Orlandu (T) vs.
2 Auron (X)
We close this round with a battle between two powerful and wise knights. Excalibur vs. Masamune. Thunder god vs. Undead. Both characters have great popularity due to their strong will and convictions, and their resolve to stand up for what they believe in. Armed with Excalibur, T.G. Cid will attempt to Lightning Stab his way through the legendary guardian. With the equally notorious Masamune, Auron will try to lure Orlandu into one of his Tornado overdrives. Only one can make it to the Final Four!
Voting will last three days. Please vote by selecting one name from each lettered pair in the poll.

FF Character Tournament Madness! FINAL FANTASY FOUR!!
Getting down to the wire! Here are the results of the Excalibur Eight Round:
4 Knight (I) - ||||\||||\||| 13
7 Maria (II) - ||||\||||\||| 13*
*tiebreaker used
A very close battle where 8-bit competitors traded attacks for magic. With both having white magic abilities, this looked to end in a draw, but at the last second Maria uses her last 16 MP to throw out an Ultima16 prayer, and it does the job.
1 Celes (VI) - ||||\|||| 9
2 Rydia (IV) - ||||\||||\||||\||| 18
Looks like the former Magitek Knight was no match for the Caller. After trading spells, Rydia started her Bahamut attack, and as a last ditch Runic effort Celes put up her sword, only to have it blown away by the king of dragons.
1 Vivi (IX) - ||||\||||\||||\ 15
3 Vincent (VII) - ||||\||||\||||\| 16
Vivi tried to win this one with the auto-reflect + reflectX2 approach. This provided for some powerful offense, which gave him the edge for a while, but also allowed Vincent to get a limit break. The little mage could not reflect a devastating Splattercombo.
4 Orlandu (T) - ||||\|||| 9
2 Auron (X) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\ 20
In this turn-based match, Orlandu threw every swordskill in the book at the legenday Guardian, but he wouldn't have any of it. After fighting is way into overdrive, Auron took aim and blew his opponent away.
Now we arrive at the Final Fantasy Four! This is every character's dream. We have some fresh faces here, since only one of these characters (Auron) has ever made it this far. On to the matchups:
7 Maria (II) vs.
2 Rydia (IV)
A couple of strong women get it on in this battle. Maria's status as first heroine has certainly helped her get this far, but now she enters the relm of the big games. She's been through some tough battles, but that only makes her stronger! Rydia seems like a runaway freight train at this point, destroying the FFVI crew and moving on to her first Final Four. Her magic will have to come through again if she wants to make the finals.
3 Vincent (VII) vs.
2 Auron (X)
Two of the most popular characters in FF history. These guys do things their way and have their own adgendas. Vincent's transformations might not be enough this time, as the experienced Auron has overcome much more greusome creatures, though it will be interesting to see if the Masamune can pierce Chaos's thick hide. These two met in last year's Elite Eight Round, with Auron coming away with a convincing victory. Here is a chance for revenge!

FF Character Tournament Madness! FINALS - Rydia vs. Vincent!!
And thus ends the Final Fantasy Four. Here are the results:
7 Maria (I) - ||| 3
2 Rydia (IV) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\||||\|| 27
From the very start Maria was determined to make short work of her competition, but to no avail. Before casting her most powerful Ultima16 spell, the caller of Mist called upon Asura to put up a protective Wall, sending the spell right back at her and making all further magic attempts useless. Though quite skilled with a bow, this could not do nearly as much damage. A few summons later, and Rydia was able to tsunami her way right into the finals.
3 Vincent (VII) - ||||\||||\||||\||||\| 21
2 Auron (X) - ||||\||||\||||\|| 17
In a much closer battle, Auron and Vincent were able to keep damage minimal, with Vincent firing from afar and Auron blocking most shots with his strong blade. As the battle raged on, Aruon's overdrive slowly built up with each passing turn, until it finally reached its max. Taking a swig of his brew, the legendary guardian lit up his Masamune and hit the former Turk with all he had, but Vincent managed to survive and gain a limit break of his own, transforming into the mighty Chaos. Aruon managed to survive a few swipes and gain a second overdrive, but Chaos slashed his way right through it to give Vincent the close victory.
And now, we go on to the finals! Here are your combatants:

Rydia
Game: Final Fantasy IV
Age: 20something
Hometown: Village of Mist
Occupation: Caller/Black Mage
Weapon: Whip
Special Attack: Bahamut Summon
Rydia had an uphill climb, finding herself in the strong Glory Days Division. After beating some of the FFVI greats like Mog, Terra, and Celes, she was able to wear the 16 bit crown with pride. Now she faces Vincent. Before this battle, she made sure to get a good cabin's sleep and stock up on Ethers. Will she be able to overcome the FFVII bias and beat Vincent? This green haired warrior will give it her best.

Vincent Valentine
Game: Final Fantasy VII
Age: 27
Hometown: Midgar?
Occupation: Former Turk/Vampire
Weapon: Gun
Special Attack: Chaos Transformation
Vincent, the mysterious cloaked gunslinger, makes his first championship appearance. He was able to beat some tough players, such as Squall, Red XIII and number 1 seed Vivi. He has both barrels loaded, though with Rydia's powerful magic he will not have the distance advantage in this contest. Luckily for him, he can become a snarling beast to match any she calls, making this a truly freakish battle.
Only one match to vote in, so let's get them in!
