Republicans against privacy???
Werent they suppose to be minimizing gov. and keeping it out of our lives??? Now me i am for this i have nothing to hide, im not a terrorist, so it wont affect me. But i dont like the idea of saying less gov control, and extending its power.
Well I gotta sorta aggree that I don't really have anything much to hide, though I am sure they could dig up something. Anyways this is a bit odd.. I really like my privacy.. and whilst I am wiling to give up some to help a good cause. Well I think they blew this out of porportion.
I'm an evil anti-american terrorist, but it's not like I care if they know it. Let them go through all the porn I look at. I hope they enjoy it.
And on a more serious note, this is the dumbest thing since carding people to board planes. Oh well...we'll be safe from those horrible Arabs once all our rights are gone...right?
Come on guys grow up seriously. The reason that they card at airports it to make darn sure that no know terrorist is in a position to hijack an airplane. You know, because they've done that before once, and it kinda sucked for the people on the airplane, and the building they rammed it into at full speed. This is the same thing, they want the IP (which they can get a name and location from) for a guy that they notice is hanging around online groups that preach or support jihad and possibly looking up bomb making sites. The reasoning is pretty simple, a guy reading about jihad and bomb making is probably going to eventually plant a bomb someplace. The idea that the government might want to take reasonable steps to prevent its citizens from dying is a good thing. And at any rate if they didn't get IPs and there was an attack, you'd probably be first in line to say "why didn't you get the IPs of all those people on Al-Qaida.com?"

Actually Gnostic I would prolly look up bomb making cause it would be interesting in learning exactly how one works.. I doubt I would ever USE one.
And it goes that way for my friends. Just about the only bomb they'd make is a super stink bomb. I just don't care for invaded privacy.. I guess if I go online saying I am planing to bomb the white house, then that would be reason to keep an eye on me... but really one should not try and over presume.

True. But preventing the death of innocents is also important. And if I knew it would have an impact I am willing to compromise.. and try and meet them halfway.

This is exactly the kind of thing America was made to PREVENT. I'm sickened to the core, but not particularily surprised.
The international intelligence community already monitors communications traffic - phones, faxes, emails, internet. It's routine, and happens all around the world.
So long as only the guilty are punished and no-one else is able to use the info for any purpose whatsoever, then I don't have that much of a problem.
However, this new proposed legislation appears to be going one step further - monitoring the interests of people, rather than targetting people who're actively attempting or consipring to do something illegal. This kind of monitoring could severely reduce people's freedom to hold and manifest an opinion or religious belief - if they're going to be targetted simply for visiting a website relating to some topical issue. It's one step below actively censoring major outlets for 'evil' religions and foreign news sources.
I'm all in favour of government intelligence agencies monitoring info in order to prevent genuine harm; but using those same techniques to single out people who merely have particular interests is going too far.

It's a very grey area. Whilst peoples privacy should not be infringed in any way, if they are under investigation, with a warrent, there should be instances where details should be requested & submitted. Child Pornography, Hacking etc etc. Conducting illegal activities online should not omit you from the normal course of investigation. Offline, peoples phone records & house can be searched, online the same should apply. This, ofc, raises the Big Brother question, but I feel as long as it isn't abused (and I'm aware it may be), investigations should not be infringed by Privacy Rites as long as the investigations themselves are done legally.

This is all bull! If the government wants to know what such and such a person is doing on the net then all they need to do is get a warrent by proving they have probable illegal activities a foot. Same as if they were going to get a wire tap on someone.

I thought that they could already get a search warrent for that even if it was online. I don't see why they can't do it when RIAA and MPAA have been able to get some information on people through the courts...and stuff.
well to start at face value it is breach to the right of privacy.
secondly it does not prove conspiracy. we shall take the rocks metaphor again.

in a parallel universe one day bill and ben randomly decide one day to collect rocks for fun. they are not guilty here.
searching the internet for anything that is legal. is well..... legal. i've looked at various bomb making guides. i've discussed guerilla warfare with people, economic and electrical terrorism and the effects there of. not because i am some mad terrorist. but i fear one day it may occour that such knowledge may need to be implemented. but curently i am guilty of nothing. i have commited no crime. when i start stocking up on fertilizer then i will be guilty. until then i am innocent.
this law kinda infringes on that a little.
i would hate to have some MI5 man at my door for looking at such materials.

nowadays if you stick "national security" or "to prevent terrorism" every breach of human rights seems to be okay for some people. this is not so. "for the protection of the people and the state" was gorunds for the nazis, do not allow it to be grounds for the american government.
No it's because the government has lists of people it knows are involved in terrorism, so if a person going by that name, or one of the aliases try to board an airplane, the government knows that this guy may very likely be up to no good.Quote:

it is a list of "known terrorists" or rather suspected. we've got the remember that cat stevens is on that list as well (lol). that list probbaly amounts to all of 5% of people who would want to blow up a plane. and half that list may well be wrong.
and..... alot of the suspects names were gained under torture. evidence which is inadmissable under any court of law.
