Bots and scripts in #eoff

What are we going to do about them? Because seriously, I hate 90% of the things that they do. I don't mind Raggy. But I don't like the caps and punctuation floods. I don't like welcome back scripts but they're seemingly harmless so whatever. I don't see the point in having one person having five names in a chatroom, let alone two or three. Okay, two is acceptable if they're logging in from school while the other PC is on at hom 24/7, or something.

These are my (currently) proposed changes...
1) No bots aside from Raggy and Mint. Mint can be used for his translator crap etc.
2) No "Don't do that" rule where if you kick someone, you get kicked. Same for de-opping. If I want to de-op three people in one go, I don't want to get kicked. If I want to op three people, I don't want to get kicked. This should at least apply to all the aops in the room.
3) No caps flood kick, no punctuation flood kick. If someone is going to be an arse then we can kick them ourselves or we can ban them if they do it too often.
4) No useless triggered scripts. I am happy to be the judge of what is useless and what is not once people start using them and will advise people of how it is useless by either chatting to them or kicking them repeatedly.
5) Only one second name (Mint and Raggy don't count as clones as they are bots) per user at most. Not from the same PC, please. That's just silly.

Am I missing anything?

EDIT: Upon further consideration of point #3, I think it would be reasonable to keep a caps flood on, if possible, for multiple lines that are in caps but not just one line. I say that because I know certain people *cough* tend to have a rather high amount of lines that are all caps.

Resha had a sticky shift button - she wrote 1831 lines in CAPS.

EDIT: If someone can make sure all of the following see this thread, that would be great: clout, Roogle, Proto, 'xoden, Kat, Snizz. Any other chatters are also free to join in but it would be nice if the aops at least were specifically notified. :p *isn't at home so can't chat*

In my few minutes' experience with #eoff, I found it to be angry, convoluted, and violent.

Weren't you in last night? I didn't see anything bad going on at that time. Oh well. Then again, I was all but asleep at that point.

1) Agree.
2) The "Don't do that" is Mint's, so you need to tell clout to get rid of it.
The multiple de-op thing is built in to Raggy, I can attempt to switch it off if you want me to. If it's not the Raggy one you're complaining about, I'm guessing its another of dn's ty things.
3) You need to speak to dn and ask him to remove them then. In my opinion you need to ask him to not op himself in the channel anyway. I don't op myself in channels I shouldn't, and neither should he.
4) Dunno about this one, I find some of them amusing, but then if you want rid of them then it's up to you and the other ops.
5) Clones are smurfing annoying, especially when they pretend to be 2 different people and have retarded conversations. I know I have 2 clients connected, but I have it that way for a valid reason. People who have more than 1 for s and giggles are annoying.

End of the day BoB, it's essentially your chat, so you need to tell people to turn stuff off it you don't want it there.

Im not too fussed about any of the bots, they're pretty harmless really, except when you get booted for a caps flood, get back in the room, and then get booted again for a repetition flood.

BoB I agree with everything you said. The caps flood, punctuation flood, and repetition flood kicks definitely need to go.

Someone got kicked one day for saying "there there." Ridiculous.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see the problem with lines in all caps. No one in there seems to do it to a point that I think is excessive, not even Resha (though I'm not usually in there during her peak time).

though i got banned when i was about to leave that flood kick punctuation flood kick and all the other auto kicking crap was annoying i got headaches from seeing people getting kicked blah. and as for advise to Aops use the kban option more if someone is saying psycho stuff no one likes kick warn if again another kick and if again a kban like other servers you can remove the bans when you like and errrr unban me from the server and ban me from the room for as long as you want but im sure the ffchat ban is for a long time.

Ok, here's my opinion on your list. You'll note that I hate hard-and-fast rules as much as possible, and would much prefer social pressures.

1) The key distinction to make is between useful bots that provide a service or do something unique and not annoying, and useless bots that provide repeat services or don't really do anything. There really aren't that many bots at the moment. (Ok, I wrote that line before I actually went through the list. But you made it sound like everyone had a bot or two.) But here's the list as I see it, and their function:

• Mint: Provides japanese translation service, ping service, and several annoying and pointless kicks. Judgment: Needs some modification, but otherwise useful.
• Philia: Never speaks, and produces the piespy chart that people occasionally look at it. Given its lack of speaking, its only problem is it takes up a slot on the nicklist. If that's a problem, then... eh, find a new hobby. Judgment: Useful
• Ragnarok: Provides ChanServ type services. Has a few annoying kicks, but those may or may not be changeable, and really aren't that intrusive. Judgment: Useful, of course.
• Confeito: Experimental conversation bot. People weren't even supposed to know it's a bot. Anyway, you can ask me personally for more details on how it works. It has no true triggers, per se. Judgment: Who knows. It might start taking up too much RAM for me to keep it here. :p
• Chubbzilla (whatever his bot's name happens to be at the time): Doesn't say anything as far as I know. I think it provides something useful, though I don't know what. Judgment: Neutral.
• Hotaru: shuten's eggdrop. Doesn't really do anything as far as #eoff is concerned. So again, it's only a nicklist slot that's missing.
• Krabmeat: Not actually in there at the moment, but it's Cbc's. I don't think it does anything useful, other than let Cbc talk when I banned him overnight because I forgot to take it off. ^_^?
• Skwoo: I don't know what it does. Probably takes up a nick list slot. Oh noes. :p

2) As far as Munty's go, it's more of a protection scheme than anything else. A few months ago, we had a little protection war type thing in #waiting_bar, and the protections we came up with were somewhat elaborate. It got really bad in there, actually. I eventually wrote a script to just deop everyone except me. Oh, fun times. But anyway, they only affect trying to attack Munty's clones. They're pretty much useless scripts, though, but getting him to remove them (especially if they're buried in pages of scripts) may or may not be difficult. Ragnarok also has some mass-deop kicks, and I don't know what can be done about that.

3) Yes, the caps flood, punctuation, and repetition kicks are pointless and stupid. Burn, burn, burn.

4) This goes back to useful vs. useless. At the very least, if a script doesn't provide useful content to the entire channel (but perhaps to a single person), it should respond with a notice. Most of my scripts did that back when I ran mIRC. That can result in trigger flooding, so private message or ctcp based triggers can be useful too. I had a little used one for my seen script back in the day.

5) Multiple names isn't really a problem except with some select people (especially FFChatters). But obviously, one person being on pretending to be three is kind of stupid. Just remember that there may be times when two siblings might be on from the same connection or something.

If there's anything else, I don't know what it is. I'm usually quite lax with what I let people do, and the only thing that can potentially annoy me is lots of kicking or instabanning.

I'm not a big fan of the caps and repetition floods, if for no reason other than they don't discourage all caps lines and repetitions. You're going to come across all sorts of personalities in chat, and that includes the super dooper social and even ecstatic types (i.e. Resha). If there are any grumpy lurkers in chat jaded from spending years in IRC chat rooms that find behavior like this too newbish, then I'd say that's something they'd have to deal with themselves. If it's incredibly irritating, then "/ignore is your friend", as I've said on a few occassions. Making the experience a bit more fun for one user at the expense of the enjoyment of another makes little sense to me.

More importantly, as I said earlier, these kicks do nothing. They don't discourage the sort of activity they're punishing. Never do you see someone get kicked for a caps flood and come back moments later with a changed attitude. Instead, "ExampleChatter was kicked (CAPS Flood)" is immediately followed by "ExampleChatter has joined #eoff" which is then followed by "<ExampleChatter>xD". It's almost a game, one which can encourage this activity because it gets a few laughs from some of the other chatters.

I don't see a problem with this one. Bots can be nifty, but Raggy and Mint suffice for the purpose of the #eoff channel. I've never really witnessed a problem with a bunch of users bringing in their own bots, but this isn't a bad rule anyway.

Sounds alright to me, I guess. Second names and all that jazz don't really bother me either way, but I don't see much use for them at the same time. I'd chalk it up to freedom of choice, but I see the reasons for the rule against it.

No. :) That's one thing I think is there for good reason. Learn to avoid the 'Enter' or 'Return' key and just use the ". " as replacement.

Though I'm not in #eoff as a lot of you, I'd have to generally agree. The repetition kicks and Cap Flood kicks are very often extremely annoying. I've always liked Welcome Back scripts because they're usually funny. I'd want one of my own, if only I ever said something original. :(

The 4 lines per 4 seconds is a server kick, not a channel kick. BoB has no jurisdiction over that. Only the FFChat administrators do.

I have no problem with all of Munty's clones, if he could take all of their scripts (!pie, for example) and stick them on Mint, that would be splendid, and take up less room on the nicklist. No other bot really does stuff.

I don't really get kicked a whole lot, because I don't type in caps or use too much punctuation, but I'd really like it if shuten's banning thing for punctuation flood was turned off, because that's extremely annoying. Thos one wouldn't be so bad if there weren't so many welcome back scripts when people do get kicked. It gets overwhelming in chat to see a punctuation flood kick followed by a log in followed by a welcome back message.

Seriously though, I usually shy away from #eoff because of the overkill of scripts and bots. The only 'welcome back' scripts that don't bug me are the ones you can set through Ragnarok. (and mine's been stuck for almost a year and I have no idea how to change it. >_>) In my opinion, getting kicked for doing your duties as an operator is asinine. Caps/punctuation doesn't really bother me unless it's in excess, and pointless triggers are fun for about five seconds.

I guess I can turn the kicks off in Mint again then, seeing as it's come and gone before, they're more for my amusement than for telling people not to caps/whatever :D And no, I can't combine Mint and Philia - one's mIRC, the other's Java, and I don't feel like hacking the piebot source code and getting mirc to interface with java so it no longer requires it's own connection for pie making.

The one that bugs me the most is !spin. I like !ping, !pie, !stats, the translator ones, and if you could add !seen I'd love it. :D As far as I know, other scripts are all dumb and annoying. Oh, and I don't mind !time. I don't know how many people do that these days, though. If too many people have !time scripts then I suppose we could at least encourage them tomake them all notice the user instead of shoving it into the channel. If there are other scripts there are out there that I can't think of right now, let me know, but as far as I know that covers all the useful ones.

So long as your bots aren't opped then I have no problems with this. :) Lately I've usually only seen three of your names at most anyway so that's cool.

And I want my bots opped so as soon as I get into chat, I can see if they're there or not so know if my PC's connection is alright or glitched and died or something else dodgy is going on with the connection and I have to fix something :monster: That doesn't harm anyone like the kick scripts do, so get over seeing them opped :p And you probably only saw 3 of me lately because I've been getting back from work late recently so probably been online on the dial-up connection while you were asleep :D

EDIT: Maybe I'll add !seen one day, but I've got other stuff to do too other than write more mirc scripts :p

Yeah same here :D I need to check that stuff all the time ya know.

The multi-deop kick was Raggy. I've disabled it.
I've also set BoB as a channel owner so he'll be able to deop whoever he wants without Raggy opping them again.
dn isn't allowed to op himself in the channel now, so that gets rid of his .
The flood kick limit (4 in 4 seconds) isn't set by server admins. It's set by ops, and it's totally up to them what they have it as. If BoB wants to keep it as 4 in 4, then you lot just have to learn to type longer sentences.

I personally like seeing a lot of names in chatxD and while having a lot of ops *is* overkill, it's sorta fun:)

Since I can actually do this now, I don't want to see our clonage rights being taken away. I'm sad that fenny hasn't shown back up thoughX.x;; (wtp is the power going out up there or something?xD) But using two connections on one machine at one time is a bit of overkill. Like tabbing between them and using them both instead of one at a time. Jebus's Schpadoinkle bot runs trivia in #trivia, not Krabmeat. Schpadoinkle also does !ping. So yeah, Krabmeat is useless xD

It was hilarious! xD! Confieto was talking. He was saying things that were tangible to the questions Resha and everyone was asking too :) One time Squieshy Reeshy asked who he was, and it said PSY!, and Resha was all like LIAR! WHO ARE YOU REALLY! xD!
