Ownership of threads

I've noticed in the past, and recently aswell that people seem to think they "own" a thread because they posted it. "How dare you close my thread" "X is not allowed to post in my threads" "Hay now, no talking about Y [Y being related to the subject enough to not be spam] in my thread" etc etc.
Now I was just wondering what exactly the staff's stance on this is! I know in the case of people complaining because you closed thier threads, you just tell them to smurf off, as you should. But what of the last two cases, and similar ones? Are members allowed to control that much what goes on in a thread because they were the first one to post it, or should they just shut up and stop being dumbasses? :eek:

I don't know if we have an official stance. MY stance is that you shouldn't be able to tell members they can't post in your thread or try to control the thread. At the same time, I think if your thread gets derailed by others and gets closed, you have a right to be mad at those who derailed it.

Nobody "owns" any thread. Once you start it you have no control over who posts in it, and what they post. If you feel someone is "ruining" your thread then you can warn the post and staff will evaluate.

The only exception is that Recognized Members and Former Stuff are able to close their own threads.

What Riz said, but if they want to pretend that they have control of it then I don't mind letting them. I'm certainly not going to tell them to 'smurf off' for something as trivial as that. If it is a question about help in a game I will usually close it if they ask, but that is the only time.

I agree with RSL, eest and Del. Starting a thread does not give anyone ownership. In fact, what it does is open the floodgates for everyone's opinions, which is what it is meant for in the first place. The only place anyone has control over what or who posts is in your own LJ, or something similar.

Cid owns your threads and posts.

what annoys me is if i create a thread. and then i leave it for a day and for some stupid reason we ened up talking about iraq (again), or some other totally un-connected thing with no relevance.

i think if you create a thread for a purpose. mainly in eotw to have a discussion you want that to be what the thread is for and at time you feel like your time is wasted.

If the thread goes off topic, use the warn button and we will review it.

The internet is built upon tangents. No use in trying to restrict that, else you're not going to have much to talk about.

The human mind functions in a process, which is why people like to play word association games. Trying to make people stick to exactly one topic in exactly one arena is more or less a lost cause.

Let it be known I approve of things that have a logical transition, and often those with less than logical ones xD

I know that once before I started a thread and after a while the subject was massively changed by the members. I asked for it to be closed and it was.

As for this thread, people should shut up about it. They don't OWN the thread. It's like owning the clouds! Or the sky! Or 1000 chicken fajitas! It's simply not possible!

But you can't own threads. Although I can see where some people are coming from when they try to claim ownership--it can be quite frustrating when you're trying to keep to a specific topic and people either totally ruin it or post something incredibly stupid. And not funny stupid, just brainless idiot stupid.
