Okay, I went shopping yesterday with my friend... she tried on some clothes, maybe a size too small and the sales lady said: "Don't you think you need to lose some weight?" HOW RUDE! I know my friend is a little overweight... BUT HOW RUDE WAS THAT?! People are always telling her that she needs to lose some weight... even strangers on the streets. I mean, have you've ever experience anything like that from strangers?

They are all concerned. Being fat is bad and it increases her chances of all sorts of lovely diseases and conditions. Like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Perhaps she should finally heed these people; not just because of how she may look to others but the health implications of being a fatty.
But yeah it was rude I guess but I have heard ruder, like when a drunken fat guy was trying to hit on my best friend and he just said "Hi, please don't eat me fatty," then the guy buggered off, no doubt to go eat some cake or oat meal.

Part of the problem is that a lot of people are "morbidly obese" today, rather then "slightly obese" as of 15 or so years ago. When people can't even walk up a flight of stairs or support their own body weight they really need to do something about their weight.
That and the fact that there are a lot of commercials on tv now (at least in the US) that claim "It's not your fault that you're fat, blah blah blah" and try to push pills. Most people don't try exercise or a healthy diet, or make a very poor attempt at it and these commercials prey on them and lead to unhealthy thoughts like "Yeah, it's not my fault, I did try walking five minutes three times a week and I didn't lose weight. It's not my fault!"
But that is true, she may die earlier because of it. Or one day she may run out of food and eat herself.Quote:

And other studies have shown that some fat people really can't help being fat. Sure, people have taken hold of that, and tried to profit from it, but still it all really boils down to what you want to believe. The things you say are true, but I, for one, do NOT believe someone with in the reverse situation of obesity, that is to say someone with an eating disorder, affects your life as a consumer any less. In fact, I would most definitely say it affects it more. A visit to your family doctor costs much less than a visit to the emergency room and a seven month hospital stay because you're malnourished and freaking refuse to feed yourself.Quote:

This saleslady wasn't concerned for the health of her customer, she was just a witch. And personally, I think rudeness is a much worse condition. I know if I had said ANYTHING like that to a customer, I'd probably be fired. And branded.
I agree with you 110% foa. I'm referring to those that are morbidly obese and those that don't try to do anything about it and then claim that it's genetic or can't do anything about it. If you eat a healthy diet and/or get regular exercise but aren't falling within the "heathly" boundarys of weight for your age, sex, etc... then in my opinion you're healthy and your weight is healthy because your body's running smoothly and you're taking care of yourself. But unfortunately that's the minority and the majority get fast food 2-3 meals a day, never work out and then complain that they can't do anything about it and that's what's driving health care and other costs up (plus the fact that the baby boomers are getting older and more obese so that just exponentially drives up the costs but that's a discussion for another time).
Also, I agree that anorexia and similar diseases cost more but they are such a small percentage (as far as treatment is concerned) that obesity ends up over-shadowing it. Also, as I said before, both are an issue that need to be corrected, but we're talking about obesity in this thread.
And I agree that the salesperson should have kept her mouth shut. Regardless of how she felt she represents the business and she should be working making the sale, not preaching about weight and weight-loss.
salesperson caring about their customer would be a first. One time I busted my knee open on an escalator and managed to crawl into a nearby store for help, but as I bled to death on the floor all I could here that salesperson saying was "Tch, You better clean that up"

I've never really had problems with my weight or anyone elses. Sometimes my mom accuses me of being annorexic, but I don't take that seriously.
What the saleslady did was wrong, it didn't show concern for her customer, and even if she did say that Chris's friend were fat, it would still be wrong. If you're working at a job that communicates with customers, you are expected to "kiss a$$." I worked at a movie theatre and no matter how rude someone was, I'd still kiss their a$$. If someone insulted me about my weight, I would feel horrible about myself, and no one should have to feel that way. Obviously she may have a problem, but close friends and relatives should be the ones concerning over it, not some random rude saleslady.
I know a lot of people discriminate against fat people, but there are still things called "manners."

I read this one story in K-Zone (a kids magazine in the philippines) that happened in Brazil.
A professor was fined 2,600 reals for calling one of his students a 'fatty'. The student left the classrom to go to the restroom, but left her tape recorder on so she wouldn't miss a word from her professor's lecture. When she played the tape back, she heard the professor telling the class she was a 'fatty' and that she would get fatter if she didn't go on a diet.
So yeah, it's really rude.
