I thought they were both pretty much the same in terms on pick up and play, but FFI was just more fun...

Not in terms of controls, in terms of gameplay.

In FF2 there is this HUGELY poorly animated bit at the start, faffing around with all the "blah blah, empire"

But with FF1, BAM! you're playing the game, and you know exactly what you need to do.

FFII

It had proper characthers, and is still one of the best stories in the series. And to be honest, it's notable for being one of the first story-intensive RPGs released for a console system!

bof! 1 is more free, but 2 has a better storyline.
1 you have to have a game guide to beat (for me anyways. its impossible!) and 2 doesn't have a lvl system. thats what i hate about 10

the levelling system in 2 is somewhat like the JP system in tactics, except that in tactics you don't have to use the specific skill to improve it.

Depends FF2 had a deeper storyline but the leveling system is not very straight forward. Like the Sap, and captain trick.
