It was. Im fighting Air buster or whatever that big side walk cleaners called.

You should gain AP after battles even if you don't have any materia equipped. However, if no materia is equipped, nothing is recieving the AP you're gaining.

Ah I see, Thanks for clearing that up. Isnt that Presea in your avatar? Her hair looks like Quistis's without her large pigtails.

of course you need materia thats what Ap is for

Well what I actually meant to ask originally was do I need to use the materia I have equipped for it to gain Ap or can I just equip it and attack to my my hearts content.

do you know how the AP system in FF7 works?

equiped materia of the characters who battled gain the AP
