Actually, I'd say MCR's Helena isn't very emo. It was written about their freaking grandma. xD
If you want emo, listen to Dashboard Confessionals, kthnx. It's terrible.
Going by the modern definition, MCR is emo, Rye. You just can't admit that 'cause you hate emo but love MCR. :pQuote:

True, Mr. MILF, true. But they don't suck. ;)
MCR are overrated, but I like them.
I love the music video for Helena.
What?
Me too, it has lots of dancing.
My girlfriend's little sister is into MCR and all sorts of that stuff mainly (she listens to lots of stuff, but mainly stuff like MCR...not so much emo I mean, but punkish kind of sounds). I could never get into it. The style doesn't mix with my music tastes.
Turn off the radio? I can't even listen to the radio any more. My Chemical Romance isn't emo. They call themselves Metal / Post Hardcore. How the heck can you complain about MCR being overplayed when S.O.A.D. gets played almost non-stop on the radio? They aren't even a quarter of MCR's talent. Unless you're talking about MTV2 or Fuse, in which case replace S.O.A.D. with Hawthorne Heights.
It's the other way around, in my opinion. MCR doesn't have a quarter of SoaD's talent. I absolutly love SoaD though, so I'm biased. xD
While we're on the topic of emo music, how about Linkin Park. They are definitely emo. All they do is b*tch. They are so annoying, my sister listens to them all the time.
Radio? What's that? Oh that's that thing that music corporations use to pay off radio DJs to play the same boring, abysmal crap over and over again.
When I am in my car, I am listening to what I want when I want. I don't need some rich old men in suits telling me what I should listen to. It's my choise.
It always boggles my mind when I am in a car with one of those people who have 1,000,000,000 CDs lying aorund everywhere, and they switch between two radio stations that generaly play the same thing. Morons. Every single one of you.
None of the music people claim that is "emo", is anywhere near "emo", and those that are "emo", most people don't listen to, even though it's far too awkward a genre to define or usually even really exist.
People associate emo with whining, and generally angsty stupid teenage rubbish, and a lot of people call themselves "emo" by being angsty stupid (and very much middle-class) teens. In reality, they're just idiots listening to mostly idiotic music like Linkin Park, desperately grasping to their claim it's "emo" and attempting to define their lives by the overtly angst-ridden songs or albums.
MCR are pop alt-rock anyway.
I make fun of emo like there's no tomorrow, but Helena is a very decent song with a very good music video. Hardly anything wrong with it compared to the stuff that Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday put out.
NPR = the ONLY radio.
opt
I listen to an '80s station in my car, and I avoid Fuse and MTV, so y'know.
MCR are pretty good.. or so i think.. =3
MTV pounded Helena into my brain with a sledgehammer.
MCR is not great, and they are overrated and way overplayed, but i must admit Helena is a decent song. It sucks too because almost every band you dislike seems to have 1 song you cant stop repeating. :P
Easy, listen to older music. I can't stand punk, rap, or any of that nu metal. It's all crap imo. It used to take skill to capture a large audience, but now all you have to do is play a pattern for a short amount of time. No lightning solos there. I'm only 14 by the way so don't asume I'm some geezer who doesn't want to go through the times
Interpol is real emo music.
you can only blame yourself for not turning the dial/changing the channel/doing something with yourself
Much as I'd love for Emo to always mean Antioch Arrow and Christie Front Drive, the simple fact of the matter is that definitions change. Just like punk once meant The Clash and The Sex Pistols, but now means NOFX and The Offspring, so Emo now means something other than what it meant back in the mid-80s. Besides which, the lines between Emo, Indie, Punk, and the like can be very easily blurred.Quote:

I refuse to ever accept that defined as emo.
Actually, I used to be a big emo-hater too. But not only did I discover that TRUE emo people are cool (and dont want to cut themselves) but actual TRUE emo music is also good. My Chemical Romance, is NOT EMO music. As Lindy said, it is pop alt. rock or whatever.
But all music is emotional.Quote:

I'm sure we'd all be a LOT happier about that if it was decided by people who knew something about the genres they're talking about, of course.
I think we need to stick a bunch of guys in an old car and have them beat on pots and pans with wooden spoons for a few hours. Record that and abolish every other form of music known to man, and kill anyone who says they don't like "New Age" pot and pan banging. Problem solved.
Oh, and I hate emo music too.
So let me get this straight...singing about what you're feeling is.........wrong and sucky and gay? Gotcha.
Well when what you're feeling is the pain from the loss of a (girl)friend forQuote:

That's another thing I forgot to mention in either of my posts. What's with all the sub-genres? Add a certain chord to a song and all of a sudden it's not rock--it's some creature called "punk-alt-goth rock!" Why must people label everything?
O.oQuote:

an explanation of emo. emo was a splinter of punk. it was more focused on melody and had more emotional lyrics which weren't just based on angst.
at one time jimmy eat world were emo. and they represented what emo was. then jimmy changed. they got all pop. but they were still called emo. and soon all bands that sounded like jimmy were called emo. even though they sounded what jimmy now play compared to what was emo.
so it all became skewed.
That does it! I am starting a new style! I am going to combine general hardish rock with a dash of country and punk! It will be called Crock Runk!
I'll help.
I once had a friend who turned EMO and when his parent found out he added that he was gay to avoid embarressment.
lol yes that is so true.Quote:

OMG STFU
Some emo is good. I listen to a group from around where I live called The Sophomore Year (www.thesophomoreyear.com)
I just don't like material that's too depressive.
MCR = Emo music is probably the silliest thing I've ever heard in my life. All of their songs have a very sarcastic kind of humor to them. I actually really don't like the band at all (though I love Helena), but still... what?
I love "emo" whiny music as long as it manages to effect me. So far all I've discovered is Evanescence... because seriously, that girl could sing about dirty toe nails and I would cry.
How dare you? I love Hawthrone Heights :crying:Quote:

No. I changed my mind. Black hair is cool. Emo is cool.
Edit: Oh and, Black hair isn't natural. Mr. non-emo "nightmare666"
Those god damn people who complain about emo but never do anything!!
Well what are they supposed to do, Crash? Kill the Emo people?
i used to think like you when i was you age up until i was 18. now i just plain hate 80's music. the 60's, on the other hand offer you a hreat amount of marvelous, instrument-wise music with incredible solos.Quote:

BUT ANYWAY.
Emo is cool. It's all angsty. ANGST AT THE WORLD YOU #$*&%#*(&#%!!
Grow up people. I listen to that music 'cause I just happen to like songs that practically bleed out their emotions. But I'm not a non-conformist, or cutter, or little ball of make-up wearing angst. That music isn't there to have any affect on your life, and if you're letting it do so, you have issues that need to address. Whether you're here loving emo or hating it.
I don't understand why people complain. I like a lot of emo music but to critisize an artist and misplace the genre correllated to it is quite embarassing.
My Chemical Romance is an ok band. Though they sound horrible live the music is ok. I like Hawthorne Heights. Again they don't sound well live but the recordings sound great. No reason to degrade the work, if you don't like it. Don't listen to it.
Meshing emo with whining is like meshing hiphop with drug abuse. Not all of it is about negativity.
Well, my revolution of Crock Runk is on hold here, so let me tell you what I think of some emo music.
I don't have a problem with overdramatic lyrics--as long as you don't do it in almost every song. Someone pointed out in this thread that it is very redundant when you talk about how the same girl broke up with you across the same album (on a different but similar note, this is the same reason why I avoided listening to Eminem's newer material: You hate Kim--WE GET IT!).
It's like most emo bands try to be angsty for the sake of being angsty. It just comes off as something fake in the end. That or you are starving for attention (you think being recognized by mass media and a huge fan base would cure lonliness).
ok i get it sum of you dont really care about this entire emo thing. but what really gets me pissed off is the kids who try to "convert" you to being an emoist. ha ha. there are these girls that keep on trying to get me to be all well.... uh.... like them. ya know what i mean? and it is really agrivating always hearin,"listen to such and such." it really makes me wanna yell at them.
If you don't like, why on earth do you listen to it?Quote:

Wait... isn't that the Emo motto? Oh my... the irony.
I just don't understand complaining about something you don't like. Nobody makes you have anything to do with it besides you. So just don't deal with it.

Emoman (It's Not Easy)
(to the tune of "Superman (It's Not Easy)" by Five for Fighting
I just sit and cry,
I am so naive,
I'm just out to find,
A Get Up Kids EP,
I'm more than a jock,
And more than a prep,
I listen to hardcoreso watch your step,
And it's not easy to be e-mo.
I wish that I could sing,
Chris Caberra's sweet,
Find a way to lie,
About a chick I'll never meet,
I sound like a girl,
Maybe you should leave,
Even emo kids are allowed to breed,
I may be disturbed,
But won't you just see,
Some green thick wool sweaters are on me,
It's not easy to be e-mo
Down again, away, away from me,
It's not alright,
Going to see Bright Eyes tonight,
I'm not crying...
It's in the air.
All my friends, they cry,
They are so naive,
I wish that I'd just die,
With hearts between my knees,
Just quote me on that,
'Cuz I am so deep,
Taken from a nine-year old on a city street,
I'm only a boy,
With old thick black specs,
Looking for inner peace inside of me,
Inside of me,
Inside of me,
Inside of me,
Inside of me,
I'm only a kid,
No phony ID,
I'm only a kid,
Looking for CDs,
I'm only a kid,
I don't have VD,
It's not easy...
It's not easy to be emo
I'm still not even sure what emo music is.
I'd suspend my distaste for crappy music momentarily if it allowed me to get with some emo girls. i'd probably get sick of them really quickly, though.
Here's a good saying, "How can music you poor your heart and soul into not be emotional." So technically all music is emo. Emo is short for emotional. All music is emotional whether you admit it or not. :)
But talking about emo as in the genre. I'm not a big fan of it. A lot of it is over-rated. I like some though. I can't stand My Chemical Romance. I don't care if other people like them, I just don't.
Ska is the greatest music ever. Depressed emo kids need to listen to The Aquabats, they'd feel better. Weee.
