What is GOOD about America?(for once)

Ok! Its a little lame that we all bash on America(even me! xD) all the time 24/7 so this time lets give America some credit to their good parts. Dont focus on any bad parts at all, just give us 2 or 3 good things about America this time. Its only fair and this part of the forum could use a little change.

- I like the diversity that is here, just going into a class in college shows how many different people are in this country and they all live side to side with (hopefully anyway) reletively little conflict is a good thing for the most part.

- Financial Aid D: I couldnt get to where i am without it. and i am sure many other people wouldnt either so i am really grateful for this.

- Pimpjuice at your local college store :D

Games are released in the US before EU, when the EU gets them. Bastards. ;)

The Dollar is low compared to the Euro, which makes me happy when I buy my NTSC PS2 games.

In the South, it's never cold. Winter there is like Fall here.

I'm a sucker for Pink Lemonade (crystal ftw). My inlaws regularly supply me, in fact, since it's nowhere to be seen here.

You can buy huge fireworks for quite cheap on the side of the road. Here, I know only one store in Paris, and it's way more expensive.

The Smithonian is a pretty damn good set of museums.

I love America, and I am here - and as if that were not enough to make this country great, the levels of diversity are awsome. Things are finally getting more laid back as far as racism and such go. We still have a ways to go, but we are still great :)

I never really considered what was good about America I guess. I know I could make a list, but I just can't get the juices flowing. I don't think we are a horder better than everyone else, its just a comfortable place to call home. I wish everyone could have that feeling, and I hope they do.

The friendliness and eagerness of people in America. People have overheard things I've said and struck up conversations based on that - I can't dream of such a thing happening in England. Store workers are friendly and even when they work in a place it's quite plain couldn't be enjoyable, they regard being friendly as part of the job. In fact, the only place I know of which has a concentration of assholes is Customs and Immigrations. Which is, it seems, the case the world over. :p

The sheer range of products one can buy in the US. Ok, here in Britain we've got a nice array of choice, and I'm sure it's the same in most of the rest of Europe, but frankly it pales in comparison to the number of things one can buy in the US.

Emphasis on the individual, and on individual responsibility. As you'll be aware, that's in line with my personal beliefs.

The ability to assimilate so many different cultures, yet remain America. Here in Britain, we have a fair spread of cultures as well, but they are far readier to remain distant from the general body of British society.

No chavs.

Sports I can actually enjoy. This one is obviously a matter of personal perference; I just happen to like football, hockey, and basketball. Whereas most other sports bore or don't interest me at all.

CSI, Oz, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Babylon 5, Space: Above and Beyond, Family Guy, The Simpsons, House, Lost, and dozens more shows. EDIT: Also, piles of movies and music as well. Yeah, there's a smurfton of crap out there, but I'll take that and sift through it when Firefly is up for grabs. Only problem is Fox cancels all sorts of great shows ><

The fact that people as disparately aligned as Michael Moore and Pat Robertson are legally protected when they say whatever insanities they are saying today.

Actually, the best thing about America is that its average citizen is so morally lazy and willfully ignorant as to make even me look pretty good by comparison. Also that its less average citizens are finally getting fed up enough to turn off WWF or "Friends", read a damned book, think a little, and maybe complain about the crappiness of the ruling system currently in place. The founding members of this country have got to be spinning in their graves fast enough to act as an alternative energy source.

Much of what I did love about this country has been eroded, so most of the comments I would have made about the time this board was starting out, I can't any longer make. Man, this is supposed a pro american thread. There are 1,000 other threads were we've all already been called fat and lazy. Can't at least one be rid of it?

I can't think exactly WHY I like this country, which is somewhat why I love it. I'm accustomed to growing up to what this country has to provide, like peace. And no, please don't make a comment about like "PEACE LOLZ OMG LEIK AMERICAZ STARTZ DA WARS" because I've never had to be afraid of someone suicide bombing a store I was in. I don't KNOW what it's like to be afraid of that type of stuff, so I'm very thankful for that.

Oh, and most of my favourite musical artists/bands come from America (Tori Amos, System of a Down, Evanescence, etc.)

Maybe you guys are rude, but I think you'd probably die if you came to England. I have not once in my life been randomly complimented by a stranger in England. In the US, it happened within a week of my first arrival. I have not once in my life started a conversation in a store with some stranger based on something they overheard. On my second visit to the US? Yep. Could be some strange freak occurance, but I'm willing to consider it at least indicative of Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois. (Yeah, I visit the exotic states, right? :p)

Yeah, that happens to me quite often in stores. Sometimes people will randomly compliment me, it's very nice.

Really it's our smaller towns that are the best. Like all in wyoming(the state i live in) any city you go to if you want to you can have a conversation with the conveniet store clerk. And when the tornado hit wright all the bikers from the strugis biker rally pitched in and rose alot of money to help with the damage.
We have the right to speak our minds and not get prosecuted for it (unless it's about molesting children O.O)
Almost every student now goes to college. And we have alot of colleges in our country. You can find whatever school you want for whatever you wanna learn.

i dunno my town is pretty relaxed and friendly. strangers saying hi to you in the street. lending you the paper in the bus, that kinda thing is nice.

I can read. I did post something I'm glad about. I just think it's really silly to have a thread where we're only "allowed" to talk about Reasons This Country's So Wonderful So We Can Pretend It's Better Than It Is. If I posted a "Why America Sucks" thread, it would be inundated with comments about how great this place is, no matter what I said in the initial post.

This country, at one point, was pretty good. Never the great wonder our revisionist historians make it out to be, because it has as spotted a history as any other major power, but it has been progressive in the past. We are now regressive. I am disgusted that our potential to do great good has been squashed in this regressive backlash, that bad leaders have taken what could have been great and done inexcusable things with it. I am more disturbed that most people seem so inclined as to ignore this and to be happy because, well, your odds of being shot in the head when you go outside are slightly less than in the Middle East (unless you're a poor black male teenager in Gary, Indiana, or a Hispanic girl in south or East Chicago, in states you laud for their wonderful friendliness!), because we have better TV shows, and because we can buy more kinds of potato chips in the grocery store.

So, yeah, the US is great, if you're white, male, Christian, and have a decent income. It's excellent if you can afford to be educated despite the massive cuts in financial aid that people posting here seem unaware of; it's ideal if you don't ever need health insurance or want to control your reproductive choices. It frustrates me that people who are posting happy things about our country seem to not know what life's like outside of the suburbs, where most people CAN'T afford higher education, if they can even complete high school. This idea that all Americans have access to any of these good things is simply factually incorrect. This isn't a "good things about America" thread so much as it's a "things that I have personally found gratifying about living in this country in my social position". There's a huge difference. Go to poor Appalachia, the Northwoods, southern Texas, the plains states, and you'll see it.

The best thing about America is that if people wake up and actually start to CARE about something other than consumerism and what's inside their gated communities and college campuses, it's probably not too late to retrieve some of that potential. The greatest thing about this place is that even uneven wealth has left enough of us with good health and money to spare so that we could, if we chose, actually effect social change that a mother of four working two full time jobs for less than a living wage will never have time to work for.

America's crime rate has been falling consistently for thirty years, and has now reached the lowest point in recorded history for many categories. I'm quite tired of America being portrayed as this trigger-happy murder-ready nation when the reality is that this has long since passed, and whatever problems there were have larger been subsumed by comparative western nation's crime rates.

For the record, I'm white, dislike being male, abhor religion, and have smurf all of an income. But that's because Britain's socialist practises have ruined the economy and make it very difficult for businesses to start and expand. Fewer jobs are not good. America has lower taxes and thus is a better place to find jobs. Even minimum-wage jobs are good there, though they mightn't put you through college. Work at it awhile. Get a promotion. Save up and get training for a better-paid job. Don't be an idiot with your money, basically.

I don't care for other people's social positions, frankly. They can sort their own messes out. In truth, I'd go so far as to say it's good those things exist in the US because it shows the government isn't yet too powerful, and doesn't yet tax too highly. Not a single one of my American friends of college age has complained about the lack of financial aid, because most of them are on it and find it quite adequate. And frankly, if people in the less fortunate parts of the States actually put their minds to it, instead of demanding Affirmative Action and compensation from companies who built slave boats 400 years ago, they'd be a hell of a lot better off. Look at Chinese immigrants. They came over and did menial labor for a long time, but they worked hard/ And now they are popularly held to be among the most hardworking and dedicated citizens you can find. As well as among the most skilled.

First point, I'd rather have the choice of health insurance than be forced into an inadequate, failing, and understaffed system. I'd also rather be too poor to have the choice, because I've got principles I put forward my agenda by, not by whatever benefits me the most. Had Britain followed on from Thatcherism in the 80s, I'd probably have had a much harder life with significantly fewer things. I'm not rich by any first world standard.

Control your reproductive choices? Are you talking about abortion? If so, I'm with you. I don't find it very savory at all, but I support abortion.

You clearly have no idea what the realities of income, taxes (which are not all federal; county and city taxes are extremely high and getting higher, particularly property taxes), crime, and healthcare are in this country. Many of the poorest people whom I mentioned are white and are not demanding reparations from anyone. Many are working eighty hours a week and are still barely able to support themselves because minimum wage hasn't gone up in nearly a decade, there is little to no public transit, and "wonderful" American companies like Wal-Mart treat their workers terribly while putting all of their competitors out of business, eliminating alternative jobs. I can't believe the generalizing racism in your last post. And while I agree that those who have children should only do so when they can support them, you are sadly ignorant as to the reality of trying, as a young woman, a low-income woman, or a woman far from a large city, to get birth control or even adequate information.

And just because your friends happen to get adequate financial aid doesn't believe that's available to everyone. Financial aid has been slashed hugely in recent years.

I like how American culture just kind of 'absorbs' people of different culture into it. It minimilizes the differences between people, and, therefore, there is less hatred, and less stupidity.

I think one of the good things about this country is that working hard can get you what you want, and there is sufficient freedom, equality and opportunity for mostly everyone who wants and deserves to be successful, to be successful.

The way for everyone to be equal is for everyone to sink to the level of the lowest person, because some people will never rise. I'd rather be happy and successful and everyone else be miserable than everyone be miserable including myself. One good thing about America is that not everyone is equally successful, and that my own success is almost entirely in my own hands.

I say, screw everyone but myself and the people I personally feel deserve something from me. I expect not a single penny from anyone who doesn't feel I deserve it through some deed of my own. America is good insofar as I'm allowed to live this philosophy, and bad insofar as I'm not. I am thankfully able to live this philosophy here to some extent.

Of the many things I disagree with in this post, I must comment on this one. If people stop having sex, they won't have babies. This is free. A person is 100% personally responsible for their own reproductive activities. Being female, poor, young, or living in a populous city is not even a partial excuse for having an unwanted child.

You are so detached from reality -- particularly on this issue -- that it's impossible to argue fact with you. Do you know nothing about sex "education" in America? About the number of people who have virtually no access to healthcare? Are you aware of the near impossibility for a woman to get sterilized, or the scarcity of reproductive care unbiased by religion? I give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that's because you've seen such a miniscule portion of this country that you have no real frame of reference whatsoever, but I think it's rather sad that because you perceive our economic system as being better than that in your country of origin, you assume these problems are a moot point.

I concede this argument because there's no point in trying to have a civil discussion with someone who's clearly so indifferent to the plight of others, if not outright amused at their suffering. I fervently hope that you one day find yourself in the fortunate positions of these people, so you can see just how great the system really is, and appreciate it firsthand.

You are so detached from reality -- particularly on this issue -- that it's impossible to argue fact with you. Do you know nothing about sex "education" in America? About the number of people who have virtually no access to healthcare? Are you aware of the near impossibility for a woman to get sterilized, or the scarcity of reproductive care unbiased by religion? Internetlolz. Or, you know, abstinance. And uhhh... I dunno about anyone else? But I was rather under the impression that most religious groups were quite happy to control sex. Certainly outside of marriage. And people being forced into marriage is a far more significant issue for you to worry about than people who don't know how reproduction works (If there are any outside of Africa over the age of 10.).

Hey, I didn't know Cloud No.9 had another account. Oh, sorry, I was totally so used to his wishing of suffering on people with differing viewpoints on political or economic issues that I got the two of you confused. Yet again, I point out that I have no desire at all to actively see other people suffering. I simply don't think anyone else is legally responsible for helping them out of it.

various hukman rights act actually state that it is the government's duty to help people out of suffering. this is actually an international obligation.

and i've never actually wished suffering on anyone. i merely said that they are happy to not care about other people because they have never experienced anything but luxury in their life. and that their point of view comes from that and to get a better insight into the world they need to experience it.

nope. because the answer to the above quesation has 3 answers, hee haw, very little, or nothing that isn't seen in another country.

You know, I'm not the biggest fan of America, but even I wouldn't go into a thread about what is good about America and troll the hell out of it like our little Scotch buddy is doing.

Lots of things make America good. One of them is the right to complain about America's problems. Obviously this thread has reached the point where animosity and personal attacks overtake the discussion and debate, so we won't be continuing it.
