Hey! These gas prices are outrageous!
I propose a fairly massive boycott from EOFF. Here's thte plan: AVOID USING CARS. Bike, Run, Walk,ETC. Do what you can to minimally consume it. If we work together and spred the word to others, it might help.

First off it's kinda too little too late. We're gonna run out of gas eventually. It's inevitable. So then my second point has to be yeah... you'd only be delaying the inevitable. I say eat it up. It'll get those nifty hybrid and electric cars and such out on the market and more affordable faster when the need for them increases to a suitable drastic amount.
The prices here around my college have jumped to $3.40 and the lines to get gas are insanely long.
So far the rumor is that at 4:00pm they are shutting off the gas pumps for 2 days in Georgia.
Sure. Then, we can boycott oxygen, water, and food. :)
In short, it wouldn't work.
I am boycotting gas and have been forever. I take all of it I can and burn it in my engine as an extreme demonstration agains the oil industry!
TAKE THAT!

I already do that. I drive my car to my dad's house and back once or twice a month but that's about it.
Um, why? If the gas prices are so outrageous, get a smaller car. When I get my first car, I'm getting a tiny little Mitsubishi Spider or a Punch Buggy so I don't have to spend millions on gas. They've only gone so extremely high this week because of Katrina. They had to close down the oil places on the water because of that, so it went up a good 30 cents.
Though I do encourage walking and riding bikes more. Walking is marvelous exercise and very fun. :)
were gonna run out of gas 4ever? in less than a month?
You could get a smaller car and still buy gas, or you could... adjust your lifestyle so that you don't have a need for more than a small amount of gas. Reducing consumption is always a good thing.
Yeah, that's true. Using the bus is cheap and walking and bike riding is free, so it's good to do that more often. I'm lucky, I live in a tiny little suburban town. I won't need my car that much when I first get it as everything is very close.Quote:

I drive a small car already (chevy cavalier) but thanks to school being just three miles away, it only gets about 20 mpg.
It won't work. Gas prices will only increase from here. The demand for it is increasing drastically, while the supply is descreasing. To hell with boycotting gas, just stop using it all together.
Considering my job depends on driving... It isn't gonna happen. Sorry.
I think boycotting hurricanes would be far more effective.
Okay that's it! It's time to start the war on hurricanes!Quote:

Maybe they'll cancel school...
But it's kind of a bummer too.
I wish people would have backup plans.
Or brains, that'd be nice as well.
Hmmmm...
Drive 15 miles to town = 18-22 minutes.
Walk 15 miles to town = ....... Not gonna happen.
Here's a better plan: Boycott the major gasoline companies for the rest of the year. I know that in Canada, those companies include Petro Canada, Shell and Esso. I'm not sure what they are elsewhere in the world, but suffice it say, buy gasoline elsewhere. We can't live without gasoline, but if the major gas companies aren't selling, they'll be inclined to reduce their prices, and other companies will surely follow suit. Think about it...
That's like a 45 minute walk. If you take it slow in the heat, an hour. Take a bottle of water. And then when global temperatures continue to rise you will be prepared, as well as being able to get wherever you need to on foot when there is no more gas.Quote:

I remember having to walk everywhere in louisiana. Of course it was crossing the streets, which is what took a lot of the time xD
Here's an idea, let's switch away from fossil fuels and start using nuclear power more!
As to our running out of gas... Yes, it will happen, but not anytime soon. As the gas runs out, the deposits which were thought to be "too costly" to tap will begin to be used. The more something is wanted, the more it's worth. Prices will continue to rise, but gas won't run out for a while.
Reasons:
1) OPEC has raised the price of oil per barrel a tremendous amount. 70 per barrel. They make hell of a lot of profit with it.
2) Not enough refineries in America to process oil.
bad planning = bad outcomes
Heh, fair enough. I don't know how uphill uphill is, but eh, my post wasn't entirely serious anyways. I wouldn't walk that unless I didn't have the choice.Quote:

I don't think you guys understood me. I wasn't being sarcastic; I'm serious when I say a boycott on hurricanes would be far more effective than a puny half-assed effort to boycott gas.
Can we boycott bottled water next?Quote:

Face it, gasoline is one of the major conveniences of our age. Now, with it becoming more scarce, and being controlled by a monopoly (essentially), the prices are rising. It's not surprising. Anyone who's taken economics could tell you that this would happen. When it gets to the point that people would rather stop using it then pay, that will happen. It won't be a boycott as much as a switch to something else. It's already happening. More and more people are looking for alternatives. Hybrid cars, bicycles... A boycott wouldn't change a damned thing. So don't bother. Just start using alternative transportation yourself. Others will change when they're ready. And eventually we won't use oil anymore. WE are still willing to use oil at the current prices. If you're not, don't, but don't ask us to change what we're doing because you're paying too much.
Yes, the gas companies are tying themselves up. Taking such advantage of current market design is about the most retarded thing they can do.
Sure they can shell in the money right now, but the outrageous hike will make people more willing to invest in other modes of transportations. Like fuel cells, and hybrid cars. It is speeding up thier own demise.
Greed for teh loose.

Gas companies can raise the prices just as much as they want. People are so dependent of gas theyu will purchase it no matter what the prices are. And the prices aren't even that high in the USA. Around 3$ a gallon or something like that. Where I live the gas is 5.7$ and it doesn't stop anyone from using their cars.
There you're wrong. As the prices raise, fewer people will purchase it. And while there are some who will keep buying it, the majority will switch over to an alternative energy source. And once that source is properly developed, OPEC can cut prices all they want and they still won't get people to switch back. The oil supplies aren't infinite, and they will run out. We will have to switch someday anyway. Then OPEC's great monopoly will fail (and I'll be laughing my @$$ off).Quote:

A 3-litre engine is small? Good God, the American standard for a 'small car'. A 1.3 litre is a small engine. A 1 litre engine, is a small engine. A car that does 16 kilometers (25 miles) on one litre (0.25 gallon) of fuel, is a car that conserves fuel, and uses it efficiently. A muscle car is a very cool thing indeed, but also a very effective fuel-reducing agent.
True it is difficult for most of you, however, if companies are making a signifigantly decreased revenue, they have no choice, but to decrease gas cost in oreder to sell products. Also this isn't necessartily a ban on gas all together, Im just more or less saying we should conserve it, so as to decrease company profits. Cmon even before the hurricanes the cost of gas was crazy at near 2.70 a gallon in my town.
I filled up today. Whoops.
It will never reach such a point. Look at the gas prices in Europe for example. They are constantly increasing and have been for a really long time. At places the gas prices are as high as 7$ a gallon. Maybe people would abandon their cars if the concept of public transportation would evolve a little further, but as it is today, people who live on the country or in the suburbs do need effective means of personal transportation.Quote:

So I don't really consider it that big a deal. YES it's a big deal in the sense that we can stop using gas NOW and pollute LESS, but I don't really care about pollution, just human conveniences.
So burn down the oil 'rivers' and do whatever -- it makes little difference in the end.
Though seriously the best course of action is to boycott the big names. There ARE no-name or non-big-huge gasoline companies everywhere, hopefully, and so you can all go there until they make so much money that they are like the big names lolz!
In case many of you were wondering, the biggest problem right now isn't the price of the gas, it's the LACK of gas. Most gas stations on my way to work, which is a thirty mile drive, have been shut down because there are no fuel deliveries.
Additionally, the price of gas skyrocketed NOT because OPEC raised the price per barrel, because they didn't raise it by that much. Prices are sky high because gas station owners are trying to prevent a run on their pumps. This is also why they've begun to ration it out. If most people hadn't been so freaking retarded and jumped up to go top all three or four or their cars off in a mad rush, things wouldn't have had to come to this. But human beings are, as a group, pretty gullible. OMG DE GAS IZ GON 4EVA GET IT WILE U CAN.
I managed to get a full tank today, and I don't plan on worrying about it until Tuesday or Wednesday when I need to fill up. There are many more important things going on in this country right now that Americans SHOULD focus on, but refuse to because they're vain and shortsighted.
Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh.
Actually, if you take inflation and past gas prices into account, it hasn't gone up as much as people usually think. But there will reach a point when people can't afford it anymore. When it costs more to drive to work everyday then you get in your paycheck, people will quit driving. If they don't, they are stupid enough that they deserve what they get.Quote:

I agree with the idea of getting a hybrid for fuel effeciancy. I just found out that my neighbor got one, and she barely has to pay for the gas.
For those of you who can just crap out a hybrid (not me). That actually might pay off.
