Gil is nothing more than currency used in the various FF worlds. As was discoverd in a thread I made quite a while ago (see below), gil has no consistant exchange rate as its value varies from game to game. What has always confused me is how monsters seem to be an abundant source of this currency (except FFVIII).

You could argue they got it from victims, but I agree that a regular paycheck makes more sense that getting it from monsters. Too bad the SeeD rank system was poorly executed.
It worked fine for getting money. It's not like you need a lot of money anyways.
Sure, but what I disliked was the way it made life more difficult for people like me, who spend a lot of time building up characters in between the main adventures.
Well, fish have gills. So I guess in some FF realities, they use rotting fish parts for currency. Weirdos.
I know what it is. I just want to know what it is.Quote:

I was playing FFI last night and I had this theory that they had to abbreviate Gold to fit a certain character length, and then from there it was just a mistranslation. GOLD->GOL->GIL.
It's kind of like R=U except I'm awesome.
Giru.
I don't think there was any mistranslation. It's just what it's called.
Except that they made it fit the 2 character length by calling it "G". I therefore conclude no.Quote:

well in FF4-6 it was called GP, and that meant Gold Pieces, I dont think "Gil" came til FF7 and the FF4/FF1/FF2 remake on Playstation.
Right you are. A WINNER IS YOU!Quote:

EDIT: And I just read that other forum, where "Giru" was mentioned. This is probably engrish for "Gilda", the term I was apparently on about (I somehow didn't know the root term), and that dude below me brought up. Or "Giru" could be japanese for "Gold". I don't speak the language.
Yes. It's from gilda, the Old English word for gold. Think of gilded, etc.
Kôichi Ishii - "So we've got the characters, monsters, and dungeons. I think that's everything"
Akitoshi Kawazu - "Wait, what about the money?"
KI - "Good point"
AK - "Yen?"
KI - "No, it's gotta be international"
AK - "...Multi-Yen?"
Yosihtaka Amano - "That's just lame guys"
KI - "Hey, get back to those sketches!"
AK - "Well I'm out of ideas"
Nasir Gebelli - "Hey guys, I just thought. Why don't we try a no-level system for the next game if this one's successful?"
KI - "Nasir, please, one problem at a time!"
NG - "But I figured we could call it : Grandoise Integer Language! or G.I.L. for short. What do you think?"
KI - "Hey Akit, you thinkin' what I'm thinking?"
AK - "Am I ever...Hyperpounds!"
KI - "You're an idiot"

I have an answer. I theorize that if you could look closley at the money, you will see the picture of the person Japan loves most, the person they named their money in ff after, Gilford Godfree
This is the best theory because it's right.Quote:

They're fish gills.
duchovney is obviously hotter.
He's a handsome man, of course, but c'mon.

Oh, Woolsey didn't mistake "gil" for anything, he deliberately changed it to GP as part of the localization. For the record, GP stands for Gold Pieces.
