2005 NPC Tournament winner revealed!
Announcing the Final Fantasy NPC tournament 2005! Atfer the great success of the 2004 NPC tournament where Beatrix of ff9 defeated Rubicant of ff4, it is time to relive the glory in 2005! Due to some eligibility complications, Beatrix will not be defending her title, but we've got a full slate of baddies and goodies to battle it out.
We need a field of 64 NPCs, however I have 65 that have qualified to participate. Therefore we must have a play-in gmae to determine which of the final two qualifiers get to join the elite field of 64.
This year's play-in game pits X-2's Shinra against VII's Professor Gast. Vote for who gets to join and prepare for the full field to be set! You may vote based on perceived battle strength, perceived coolness, random coin toss, or any other method you prefer (except the rhythm method, who are you trying to fool?)
NPC Tournament Bracket A Round 1
Ok, this starts the official tournament with Bracket A. Choose one from each pair in the poll.
NPC Tournament Bracket A Round 2
So we have some winners in the first round of bracket A, and here are our compelling second round matchups:
1. Bahamut (I) vs. 9. Don Corneo (VII)
The class change master from the old school master meets up with the crazy pimpin Rapps star of the PS king daddy. This one could go either way.
5. Olan (T) vs. 4. Raine (VIII)
The only one who knows the truth faces off against Raine. I;ve never played ff8 so I have no clue what Raine does. I think Raine is Squall's dad, or mom, or something. Anyway, go Olan!
6. Ultros (VI) vs. 14. Cid (X)
The grand master of the 2005 EoFF elections and all around awesome octopus buddy Uncle Ulty meets up with our big upset winner of the bracket, the ubiquitous Cid in his FFX incarnation. What? I'm just a stupid octopus?
7. Namingway (IV) vs. 2. Hojo (VII)
Easily the weirdest moon man ever thinks his opponent Hojo should change his name to TifaLuvr6969. Hojo thinks Namingway should shut up and change his own name to YellowGreenBlueXXII.
Vote for one in each group of two, and may the best NPCs advance!
NPC Tournament Bracket A Round 3
After some tight battles and one big upset, we move on to round 3 of the first bracket. Here's our matchups:
9. Don Corneo (VII) vs. 5. Olan (T)
After ekeing out a 9-8 upset over topseeded Bahamut (I), our favorite slum lord faces off against the master astrologer Olan and his Galaxy Stop attack. Olan dispatched Raine (VIII) without too much trouble, winning 11-7.
6. Ultros (VI) vs. 2. Hojo (VII)
Lovable cephalopod Ultros completely dominated Cid (X) in round two, winning 15-2. Now he faces the crazed doctor and beach bum Hojo in what should be a premier matchup in the tournament. Hojo was victorious over Namingway (IV) 13-6.
NPC Tournament Bracket A Round 4
Wow, we have an all ff7 matchup in the finals of Bracket A:
9. Don Corneo (VII) vs. 2. Hojo (VII)
Don Corneo pulls off another improbable upset over Olan 11-7. His reward is facing the lovely Hojo who barely eked out a victory against the very popular Ultros 11-10. Who will represent Bracket A in the final four?
NPC Tournament Bracket B Round 1
I am filling in for eestlinc while he is on vacation this week. We're ending this round because it has been brutal.
Results from bracket A final:
9. Don Corneo (VII) - 1
2. Hojo (VII) - 12
The scientist wins in a massacre.
Ok on to bracket B! Vote for one name in each pair.
1. Hades (IX) vs.
16. Professor Gast (VII)
8. Desh (III) vs.
9. Ellone (VIII)
5. Rin (X) vs.
12. Queen Remedi (TA)
4. Gippal (X-2) vs.
13. Bikke (I)
6. Aldo (XI) vs.
11. Zalbag (T)
3. Reno (VII) vs.
14. Daryl (VI)
7. Robot (I) vs.
10. Nelly (II)
2. Rubicant (IV) vs.
15. Gogo (V)
NPC Tournament Bracket B Round 2
A lot of upsets in this round!
A. 1. Hades (IX) - 8
A. 16. Professor Gast (VII) - 10
B. 8. Desh (III) - 7
B. 9. Ellone (VIII) - 13
C. 5. Rin (X) - 12
C. 12. Queen Remedi (TA) - 3
D. 4. Gippal (X-2) - 5
D. 13. Bikke (I) - 13
E. 6. Aldo (XI) - 3
E. 11. Zalbag (T) - 11
F. 3. Reno (VII) - 16
F. 14. Daryl (VI) - 7
G. 7. Robot (I) - 15
G. 10. Nelly (II) - 1
H. 2. Rubicant (IV) - 9
H. 15. Gogo (V) - 9
Round 2
16. Professor Gast (VII) vs.
9. Ellone (VIII)
5. Rin (X) vs.
13. Bikke (I)
11. Zalbag (T) vs.
3. Reno (VII)
7. Robot (I) vs.
2. Rubicant (IV)
NPC Tournament Bracket B Round 3
Round 2 results:
A. 16. Professor Gast (VII) - 11
A. 9. Ellone (VIII) - 5
B. 5. Rin (X) - 6
B. 13. Bikke (I) - 9
C. 11. Zalbag (T) - 3
C. 3. Reno (VII) - 12
D. 7. Robot (I) - 6
D. 2. Rubicant (IV) - 9
Time for round 3:
16. Professor Gast (VII) vs.
13. Bikke (I)
Professor Gast tries to continue his improbable run as the lower seeds continue to dominate.
3. Reno (VII) vs.
2. Rubicant (IV)
A pretty good matchup of quality NPCs. Rubi has the FFVII bias to get over now. 'Allow me to heal you before we fight, Reno.'
NPC Tournament Bracket B Round 4
Well, Looks like Professor Gast continues his improbable run to face Reno in an all ff7 matchup in the finals of Bracket B. Who will advance to the final four to meet up with Hojo????
NPC Tournament Bracket C Round 1
So Reno vanquished Professor Gast 14-3 to advance to the final four out of Bracket B. Now, on with Bracket C!!!
1. Golbez (IV)
16. Arylon (I)
The evil adversary of FF4 meets the evil...um...dancing villager...of FF1. Both have the ability to make men do their bidding.
8. Llednar (TA)
9. Princess Sara (III)
I have no idea who Llednar is, but he sounds elvish or something. Princess Sara however is the hot red dominatrix of 8-bit fame.
5. Quan (IX)
12. Dr Unne (I)
All I can say is this would be a very strange matchup on Celebrity Death Match.
4. Lion (XI)
13. Fujin (VIII)
I don't even know who either of these two are.
6. Buddy (X-2)
11. Erin (IX)
Erin flies the airship.
3. Vormav (T)
14. Yang's Wife (IV)
One is crazy and kills lots of people and then turns into a devil. The other gives you a frying pan and a spoon.
7. Rufus (VII)
10. Guido (V)
Rufus doesn't do much of anything except get his ass kicked, and Guido is a ninja turtle. Still, Rufus will probably win just because OMG FF7 IS TEH BESTES!
2. Jecht (X)
15. Katarin (VI)
Jecht does stuff, I guess. Katarin singlehandedly repopulates the town of Mobliz. You be the judge.
NPC Tournament Bracket C Round 2
Some close ones, some runaways in round 1.
Here's round 2:
1. Golbez (IV) vs 9. Princess Sara (IX)
Golbez made quick work of Arylon 10-2, while Princess Sara knocked out Llednar 7-4. This is a good matchup of crazy old school FF outfits. Both of them would feel at home in a goth club.
12. Dr Unne (I) vs 13. Fujin (VIII)
Both underdogs won the first round, with Dr Unne edging out Quan 7-6 and Fujin crushing Lion 9-3. I'm sure they will produce an exciting round 2 matchup.
11. Erin (IX) vs 14. Yang's Wife (IV)
Another pair of upsets as Erin barely defeats Buddy 6-5 and Yang's Wife thoroughly embarrasses Vormav 9-3. Yang's Wife is more popular and also more silly, but Erin has that oglop magic and a sailor suit.
7. Rufus (VII) vs Jecht (X)
Rufus flipped Guido on his shell and won 8-4. He'll face a tough challenge in Jecht who easily dispatched Katarin 10-2.
NPC Tournament Bracket C Round 3
We had some close battles and now we have four who have emerged to battle out in the next round of Bracket C:
1. Golbez (IV) vs 12. Dr Unne (I)
Golbez handles the firecracker Princess Sara 10-5 to move on and face the underdoctor himself, Dr Unne, who barely eked out a victory over Fujin 7-6. Go moon man!
11. Erin (IX) vs 7. Rufus (VII)
Erin slid past the late surge of Yang's Wife for a 7-6 victory. Her reward is a matchup with the President of ShinRa himself, ol boy Rufus, fresh off his 12-6 trouncing of Jecht . FF7 characters seem to have the upper hand in the tournament this year. Can Erin stem the tide?
NPC Tournament Bracket C Round 4
Now for the finals of Bracket C.
1. Golbez (IV) vs 7. Rufus (VII)
Golbez handled Dr Unne with relative 8-4 ease. Rufus took his ff7 handicap and had a relatively weak showing against Erin, winning 9-6. Now the question is whether Golbez can prevent the third straight ff7 character advancing to the final four.
NPC Tournament Bracket D Round 1
So Golbez has vanquished the mighty Rufus 9-7 and prevented the total dominance of ff7 characters. Now for the final bracket! It's a good one...
1. Delita (T) vs 16. Dorga (III)
The great NPC of Tactics flows against the big tide. Dorga doesn't do much of anything.
8. Yunalesca (X) vs 9. Nooj (X-2)
I got nothing on this one.
5. Gatta (X) vs 12. NORG (VIII)
Don't even know who these characters are, but they face each other.
4. Siegfried (VI) vs 13. The Invisible NPC (I)
This is quite an interesting matchup. Siegfried tantalizes us with his untapped potential, while the invisible NPC probably would be difficult to defeat considering she's invisible.
6. Balmafula (T) vs 11. Dr Lugae (IV)
Wouldn't it be great if Balmafula advanced all the way to face Delita? She does know the truth, after all. Dr Lugae reminds me of snot.
3. Gilgamesh (V) vs 14. Nono (TA)
Man this bracket is stacked. Gilgamesh for the win?
7. Lani (IX) vs 10. Archduke Kam'lanaut (XI)
No character from XI has wona single matchup. Lani seeks to continue that trend.
2. Paul (II) vs 15. Palmer (VII)
Woohoo, Paul! Palmer has a dedicated following, though.
2005 NPC Tournament Bracket D Round 2
winners of round 1 of bracket D:
1. Delita over 16. Dorga 11-6
8. Yunalesca over 9. Nooj 12-3
12. NORG over 5. Gatta 13-1
4. Siegfried over 13. Invisible NPC 8-7
11. Dr Lugae over 6. Balmafula 8-7
3. Gilgamesh over 14. Nono 16-0 (CRUSHING!)
7. Lani over 10. Archduke K 14-1
15. Palmer over 2. Paul 10-5
so the next round:
1. Delita (T) vs 8. Yunalesca (X)
12. NORG (VIII) vs 4. Siegfried (VI)
11. Dr Lugae (IV) vs 3. Gilgamesh (V)
7. Lani (IX) vs 15. Palmer (VII)
vote on!
NPC Tournament Bracket D Round 3
none of these were close in round 2:
1. Delita over 8. Yunalesca 8-3
4. Siegfried over 12. NORG 10-1
3. Gilgamesh over 11. Dr Lugae 11-0 (crushing!)
7. Lani over 15. Palmer 9-2
so for round three:
1. Delita vs 4. Siegfried
This is a very good matchup.
3. Gilgamesh vs 7. Lani
Can Gilgamesh win three straight shutouts?
NPC Tournament Bracket D Round 4
Siegfried defeats Delita 9-7
Gilgamesh defeats Lani 12-6
So the final spot in the final four will be decided now:
4. Siegfried (VI) vs 3. Gilgamesh (V)
megadrive vs excalipur.
NPC Tournament Final Four
Wow, Gilgamesh dominated again, defeating the overmatched Siegfried 18-3 to advance to the Final Four. Here's where we are now, with two great matchups that could each go either way:
2. Hojo (VII) vs 3. Reno (VII)
A matchup of two powerful enemies from ff7, you get the mad doctor against the attitudinous Turk. Either one could pull out the victory and advance to the final matchup.
1. Golbez (IV) vs 3. Gilgamesh (V)
Battle of the Big Gs pits the pseudo-evil moon baby against the four-armed H(N-zone)IC. Definitely a matchup worthy of the final four.
2005 NPC Tournament FINALS!!!
Wow, an amazing Final Four:
Reno triumphs in the epic battle with Hojo, winning 9-8.
Gilgamesh made quick work of Golbez, 13-4.
So now, your NPC 2005 championship match, to join Beatrix in the NPC hall of fame:
Reno (VII) vs Gilgamesh (V)
A dream matchup? The most popular NPC from the most popular FF game faces off with one of the most famous of all NPCs ever. A clash of the titans. Touph Ring vs Excalipur. Four Eyes vs Four Arms. Many battles filled with witty banter vs Many battles filled with witty banter.
