I'm sure many of you have heard that Hurricane Wilma strengthened to a Level 5 Hurricane today. Already, about two-thousand people have been killed, most of them living in Guatemala.
According to researchers, it will hit Florida on the weekend, but not before passing through a bit of Mexico.
Hurricane Wilma has been declared the strongest storm of the year, with winds going up to 180mph.
What are your thoughts on another hurricane arriving?
Holy crap 180MPH and fresh too this is bad, My Mate has just gone on Holliday to Florida.
Heh, we've run out of names. If any more hurricanes or tropical storms show up before Nov. 30th (Which they likely will.) we'll be using letters of the Greek Alphabet. Hurricane Gamma... gonna be trouble.
Assuming anyone gets through this one of course.
Just gotta take your precautions and be ready to rebuild I suppose.
My brother in law lives in Florida as well. But, it isn't gonna hit there until the weekend most likely.
The size of it is very surprising.
Not as big as Rita or Katrina it's quite small so this is gonna stay fast for a while longer.

I thought names were picked at random from a certain list that revolves every 5 years.
Why the hell would anybody want to live in Florida? I just don't get it. The place gets destroyed a good five times per year.
they name them in alphabetical order.
It's probably won't be as strong when it hits the US, but still it doesn't look good.

No, they don't. Storms are named boy-girl-boy-girl and proceed through the alphabet. The most powerful ones are eliminated from the list of future storm names for a period of 80 years. Until now no year has seen the end of the list reached, but the procedure is to use letters of the greek alphabet if this does occur, which it almost certainly will now that we're at 'Wilma', the last in the list, a good six weeks before the end of the Hurricane season.Quote:

it's the biggest hurrican ever recorded (typhoons are actually larger so we don't count them) and has the lowest pressure ever seen in the northern hemisphere.
but hitting florida is okay. people are getting all paranoid now after katrina. katrina wasn't a problem because of it's size but because of where it hit.

Oh, and Cloud's right about the typhoons. If you think hurricanes are bad, imagine a storm which covers an area greater than the distance from the Canadian to Mexican borders. That is how big some of those typhoons can grow.
It'd be fun to see a Hurricane Gamma or Hurricane Delta XD.
Rita and Katrina surpassed WIlma in size but since Wilma is smaller she can sustain higher speeds for longer before fizzing out of juice.

she will also spend a longer amount of time on the ocean if she follows her path. sucking up more water and getting more powerful.
If I am not mistaken all the name use to be female names and then the ladies complained that it was sexist. Just what are men trying to say? That women just ruin lives so they gave all these storms that destory lives female names? So they changed to to be every other one like it is now and look what has changed....NOTHING. Women still ruin everything XD

Wilma has arrived at Southern Mexico. Although, right now, it's in the "eye of the hurricane" status. That's when the hurricane slows down by more than half. Sadly, many of the people there think that it may be over from that.
A death toll has not been reported.

been far more than 2. tis a global trend. whether it's caused by global warming or not is up to personal belief. the warming of seas does create a lovely little spot for these things to grow from and become more powerful.
It's because we've just spend a fair number of years in an incredibly calm period down there. All signs suggest that this year's hurricane season is a lot closer to the area's normal quantity and intensity than the last few decades have been. We're just going to have to get used to the fact that this is normal and will be for some time, until it cycles back and calms down again.
Sepho: True, but due to various considerations typhoons (Or more correctly those designated as super-typhoons) can be far, far larger than hurricanes.
I'm just glad I live in Britain. We have the same amount of rain and wind, but portioned out equally across every single minute and second of the year. That's why our entire economy is based on the manufacture of anoraks, gloves, and silly woolen hats.
Except for that one hurricane in the 70s, but that was a deliberate attempt by the French to steal all our cheese. They're jealous because everyone likes cheddar, but no-one likes camonbere(sp?). But everyone likes Brie, so I really don't see what they're upset about!
Actually it was in October 1987 that the "Great Storm" happened.
It was a tropical depression from the remains of Hurricane Floyd, not really a hurricane but still it pwned the south area of England.
So what's the status of Wilma now?
