Hypnotize - System of a Down

I couldn't find the old thread, so sorry for making a new one.

So far, this CD is AMAZING. Very old school style, except with Daron singing a lot, like I was wishing for, so I was so relieved. I've heard Dreaming is like Steal this Album! and Attack is like their self-titled first album. But they've also got the good catchy style for some songs from Mezmerize. Kill Rock 'N Roll, for example, is awesome. It's still somewhat Steal this Album! style, which is good. U-Fig is very much like Steal this Album!

I have no complaints, but I've only listened to a little less than half so far. :)

EDIT: Listened to it, now I can review it:

1. Attack - Very nice song, old-school style. 4/5
2. Dreaming - Nothing extrodonairy, old-school SoaD style, but nice. 3/5
3. Kill Rock 'N Roll - Insanely catchy song. 3/5
4. Hypnotize - A good song, but not their strongest song, considering it was a single. 4/5
5. Stealing Society - Like Dreaming, but better. 4/5
6. Tentative - Very catchy, Toxicity style. 4/5
7. U-Fig - Steal this Album! is the best way to describe it. Love the insane sounds. 3/5
8. Holy Mountains - This is when this album gets kickass. Great intro. Very atmospheric and beautiful. 5/5 9. 9. Vicinity of Obscenity - smurfing insane song, I love it. Banana, banana, banana, banana, terracotta, terracota pie! 5/5
10. She's Like Heroin - Even more insane than the previous song. Very very funny, in my opinion. 4.8/5
11. Lonely Day - Stunning. 5/5
12. Soldier Side - Possibly the best song on the album. Stunning, just like Lonely Day - 5/5

I was hoping I'd get to make this thread. :p

I heard most of it on the radio last night, and I went out and bought it this morning. Great stuff, but you all probably could've guessed that.

As expected, with every album System of a Down released, it sucked total ass.

I didnt really like it, they werent up to my Unreasonably high metal standards.

I loved it, I don't restrict myself to "only heavy" or "only metal" music. Even though I love metal I also appreciate other music like rock and hardcore. System has always been one of my fave bands and I don't care what any fanatical purist says.

I liked it.
Doesn't beat their older material, but it's still good. Something to jump and wave your hair along with :)

I think it's a good album, no System of a Down aren't metal, no they're not to everyone's taste but not LIKING them doesn't mean that they "suck".

I think it's interesting. It's not as good as their old stuff, but it's interesting to see the new direction they're going in. It's better that they're staying original than going through the same old stuff. That's for puny bands. Metallica made a few unusual turns in their time, and they're all the better for it.
But, I'm still not to sure about someone wailing 'Eat the grass! Eat all the grass that you want!' in a vagely melodic tune. Is grass meant to mean grass as in the drug? Everything they sing seems to be about drugs. Or ranting about politics. But that's OK.
Drugs = Bad
Inane political rants = Good

Is it longer than 35 minutes?

It's only 39.6 minutes. It's not a really long CD, only 14 songs, but I'd rather a nice short CD than a big crap CD. :p

She's Like Heroin is so catchy. Lonely Day and especially Soldier Side are really good too. Probably the best songs on the album.

XD That's true!! There are loads of albums that play more songs in one CD. Even CD-roms that are bought for CD burning can holds more minutes!! Longest I know is 80 minutes...

Had I ever said they sucked because I didn't like them? No.

I don't like them because they suck. Heh. They are honestly the same old nu-metal, aka, hard-rock (with some metal influences, but few), with Armenian musical thrown in there. Woo. Big deal? I don't get the whole big deal over them, especially from the kids who claim them to be inventive.

It is honestly not that inventive at all to use folk elements in ones music, many bands have been doing it for years. However if you just like the sound, than I feel incredibly sorry for your ears.

Rye, I've got about 66 now, how many more would there be after adding hypnotize? xD 78 ish? Chubbz seems to have more than me though xD

I like SoaD's lyrics, especially Forest, and Innervision. Sugar is funny and Spiders is even creepier with the words.

I doubt I'd like them quite as much if they didn't have Serj singing so much.

And now that I think about it(it must be too late, for me to be reflective like this) it sounds so perfectly ridiculous to think that *my* favorite band is called System of a Down. Now I know why those people were like ":OOOOOOOO" when I was in eighth grade:]

And as for good SoaD that you wouldn't think of going by their released albums, Marmalade (strangeland soundtrack) Metro (dracula 2000 soundtrack), Johnny (I have no friggin' clue:D) Goodbye Blue Sky (sadly this too gets turned into a political statement, but I love it)

And apparently I'll have to wait for my birthday to get this; my mother asked me to guess what my brother had already gotten for me. She was a bit miffed that I knew what it was xD just two weeks I guess:(

And anyway, I just picked up the new ablum and was giddy with excitement as I skipped back to my car. I've only listened to it once, but I'm already likeing it. I'll have to listen to it a couple more time before I create an accurate view, but it's pretty good so far.

Well, I like System of a Down. Really much like. Good music and damn good political messages (or something)! I've heard some of the new album. As a whole, I don't think it's as good as earlier albums, but still very good. It's a little strange, yes, a slightly different style. But it's interesting to hear. I like it.

I never said my opinion changed their genre, only fact does. My opinion on this just happens to coincide with fact.

Each genre is rather different, but you and everyone else on these boards aside from jrgen are completly blind to knowing this. For someone who has a quik reference 101-Genres chart tatooted onto the inside of their eyelids, you're pretty ignorant.c
Hard rock is from the 70s and early 80s- stuff like ACDC and Deep Purple, to name a few. They're metal, plain and simple. Not heavy metal, though a few songs could be, but metal none the less. Alternative metal, they're usually called.
And just because you don't like Armenian folk music doesn't mean it's 'little-skull little-skull little-skull little-skull'.

No-one ever said they inventive because they had folk influences. At lest, not the band themselves. Besides, the first bands to mix folk and rock were guys like Jethro Tull, not post-black-dark-evil-aaargh-satan-I'm-so-cool-metal bands.

I don't think anyone's arguing that System of a Down is metal (not that I read through this entire thread to know that for sure, but I'm giving the members of EoFF the benefit of the doubt). They are to metal what My Chemical Romance is to emo, ie. not.

I despise them, and my boyfriend loves them. It makes for interesting conflict!

soad's been labeled as nu-metal for at least four years now, for what it's worth.

Nu-metal and metal are very different. Linkin Park is nu-metal. Would you call Linkin Park real metal?

I have given plenty of facts, in at least 2-3 threads that support my knowledge of metal and the different sub-genres of it. Hell, just everyone likes to think that because I can name so much off in so much detail I am being an elitest heh.

Who cares if I don't have much else in my life than music? It isn't anyones concern aside from my own, and if it were the case I would have already done something about it.

Shame none of those facts were in this thread, backing up what you were saying on this specific subject.

Fine I will effing post the genre discriptions here, and FURTHER make this go off topic.

Thrash: A combination of old school Hardcore Punk with Classic Heavy Metal, early thrash bands took the two emerging styles merged them added a healthy dose of speed and went from there. One word defines the instruments in thrash "fast", Riffs are sets of fast chords, drums are played in double bass rolls and fast snare reliant blasts, bass is often limited to fast plucking of the top two strings. Vocals are usually intense but clean and lack vibrato. Slayer, Testament and Exodus are all good examples.

Black Metal: An extreme evolution of thrash about pushing metal to its audible extremes. Guitars are fast and abrasive, often quite minimilistic, and often tremolo picked. Drums are usually fast double bass sections or fast blast beats, usually accompanied by a ride or hi-hat. Vocals are often shrieked in a shrill high-pitched tone, and production is often very rough to enhance the atmosphere and abrasiveness of the music. Mayhem, Darkthrone, Gorgorth, Burzum and Kreig are all excellent examples of Pure Black Metal. Some BM bands try to incorporate synths and more electronic atmospherics into their music, these bands are often called "Goth Metal" by BM fans although this is inaccurate, the term "Symphonic Black Metal" is a lot closer to the truth.

Death Metal: The other evolution of Thrash, this branch of bands went in a very different direction with the Thrash prototype, they thickened the guitar tone, inserted a lot of musicianship, morbidity, groove and speed (yes even more). Double bass sections are usually faster, more blasts are used and riffs are usually a lot more technical. However the main thing that sets DM apart is the vocals. Vibrato soaked growls that are projected from the abdomen and shaped with the throat, this is as important part of the music as any of the instruments. Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy, Origin, and Death are all good examples of Death Metal.

Power Metal: A straight evolution of Classic Heavy Metal, through Iron Maiden who despite not being Power themselves were a massive influence on the genre. Power Metal places a high focus on guitar harmonies and melodies, extravagant solos are used often and riffs tend to "gallop" due to the chord progressions used. Vocals are typically high and soaring, subject matter is quite often fantasy based. Lost Horizon, Hammerfal and Stratovarius are good examples of this.

Melodic Death Metal: Or "Melo-Death" is a combination of Power Metal structures with those of Death Metal, Maidenesque twin guitar harmonies are used liberally, drums usually contain a certain amount of rhythm and groove, technicality is at a mid to high level and vocals are usually growled, although at a higher pitch than standard Death Metal. In Flames, Soilwork, At The Gates and Arch Enemy are all obvious examples of Melo-Death

Progressive Metal: A combination of the ideals of 70’s/80’s prog bands such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin with the distortion, groove, rythym and structure of classic heavy Metal. What came out was a legion of bands led by Dream Theater who featured immense technical ability, numerous time signature and tempo changes, long sweeping instrumental sections and typical high soaring vocals. Each song often sounds different from the last due to the fact that they draw influence from all over the place and extravagant solo sections are almost a necessity.


Grindcore: An extreme form of Hardcore Punk. Characterized by heavy use of blast beats, heavily distorted bass, and extremely fast, grinding guitars. Vocals are typically guttural bellows, but higher pitched screams are also used. Emphasis on simplicity, just as in punk. Napalm Death, Nasum, Burned Up Bled Dry, Extreme Noise Terror and Siege are all excellent examples of Grind. Modern grind or "Tech Grind" as it is sometimes called is slightly different in that it is based more on modern Metalcore than in old school punk, the obvious examples of this are of course Pig Destroyer.

Doom Metal: This term has grown to mean "anything that draws influence from the first two Sabbath albums" but I resent that, real doom is painfully slow, depressing music, with long monotonous drones for riffs, simple drums and particularly pained vocals (usually lower than their DM counterparts). Most Doom Metal puts the emphasis more on atmosphere and "feel" of the music, rather than any individual notes or riffs. Examples include Saturnus, While Heaven Wept and Skepticism.

Sludge: Typically a sub-genre of hardcore, although borrowing from genres such as Industrial, Grindcore, and even Southern Rock. Characterized by incredibly slow, grinding, dirgy guitars, primarily rhythmic drumming, and screams which sound particularly painful. Subject matter can be about anything, but is most typically about drug use or various states of emotion. the most easily recognizable bands in this genre are Eyehategod, Crowbar, Soilent Green, Beaten Back To Pure, and Rabies Caste.

Goregrind: A combination of Grindcore's intensity, pace and song structure, and death metal's vocal style, musicality, groove, morbidity and technicality. Rather than the emphasis on simplicity grind has, it finds a middle ground and uses moderate technicality and repetition to create a very listenable groove. Dual vocalists are a trademark (but not essential), as is very tongue-in-cheek gore lyrical content. Pre-Necroticism Carcass, Lord Gore, Devourment, Haemorrhage, and Repulsion are good examples.

Metalcore: In short: Hardcore + A Metal Genre (Usually Thrash Or Death) Very similar to Hardcore in most respects, but instead of using either overly abstract riffs (The DEP) or simple mosh riffs (Hatebreed), they tend to use much more Thrash or Death influenced guitar work. Metalcore tends not to have the genericore Hardcore vocals and the drumming is more tribal instead of jumping between slow blast beats and rolls. Zao, Johnny Truant, Luddite Clone and Into Eternity are all good examples of the range of sound Metalcore can create.

Bah, It was mainly because Traitor is a dick that I posted them, and felt like showing him off. How can I prove that SoaD are bad, it is opinion. I, however, only accept my own opinion and those akin to mine.
