I can't explain ff9. It wasn't bad but to me it seemed like a Fill-In kind of game. Like they had to make it to get to the next. Especially graphics wise. FF8 graphics were much better than FF9 and the characters in this were much shorter. Kinda like everyone was a midget. lol. but i still loved the storyline. it was a pretty good idea.:D
It was a tribute to all preceeding FF games, so they wanted a style that could be identifiable with many of the sprite-based games of yesteryear. The graphics are similar to that of FFVIII because the games were in development at the same time
The characters were purposedly made super deformed as a homage to the times where superdeformedness was a graphic necessity.
And no, it was not a filler, but a way to celebrate Final Fantasy in all of its installations before the transition to PS2. I dare anyone to demonstrate this game is a filler.
Some say that Square made IX with a distant old school flavour to make up for the experimental failure that was VIII. Not true though, as ForestOwl has said, the games were developed at the same time and IX was always intended to celebrate the Nintendo games that had skyrocketed FF into the forefront of the minds of all RPG players.
Besides, the game ownz. How can you say it's a filler?
how could you say that? FF9 is one of the best FFs and although the graphics may have been different FF9 is one of the coolest, funnest FF because of all the tributes and because of the cool storyline. i think its better than FF7. FF9 was supposed to be a tribute but only in a little way. it was also supposed to be a proper game which it is.
X-2 was a fill in. IX was not.

chaos: I think they actually spent a lot more time perfecting FFIX than X or VIII. Have you listened to the music? Completely awesome. :)
Trowa: The graphics were beautiful. I didn't have a problem with them. The FMV's might not've been perfect in comparison to FFVIII's, but still, they are good. The storyline surpassed VIII's and X's IMO. I really felt like this game really fit the name "Final Fantasy". *sits and stares and sits and stares*
Calling it a filler is an insult. Well, not really. :) But I whole-heartedly do not believe that this installment of Final Fantasy was a 'filler'.
A filler would've looked horrid, had an un-creative storyline, terrible character development, leak-filled battle system, etc. FFIX did not.
Besides the IX is decorated in pretty gold colour. ^_^v
by the way i never sayed I hated FF9 and never meant to insult it. i like it too actually, especially vivi. But I was just stating my mind. But I guess I was wrong eh.

No. Your not babbling, thats pretty acurate. I don't hate X-2, actually its quite fun but what you stated is obvious. The other reason for X-2 is because XI was online, alot of people would be turned off, therefore a normal game was made to balance out the equation and keep both sides happy (and themselves happy concidering they reap the profits of two games instead of the usual one)Quote:

X-2 was made to expand the market by appealing to women and horny old men... they already had teenage boys with the whole swords magic and chocobs deal they just needed to build up a fan base of chicks and perverts... thus X-2 was born... now just you watch all the die-hard FF fans + the chick/pervert fans will buy XII and we will have the best selling FF to date... that you can count on

That's what u say. Did u actually ask Square if that were true. I'm guessin not so that is a statement for now but not fact.
FF9 was NOT a "filler" in my opinion it was the best "overall" FF due to a lovable (not annoying like FF10-2) cast good battle system (though trance pissed me off) and a great story to boot!
IX was a tribute to I. If you don't like IX, then you probably wouldn't like I. I, however, like both IX and I.
Final Fantasy IX is a wonderful game, and I can't see how anyone would call it a filler. I could see how someone doesn't like it, that's just your gaming preference. Anyway, FFIX was a tribute and made to bring back fans who were made with VII and VIII. In all the honesty I've ever known, I like both of those, too.
FFIX's music was the best achievement about the game, with Uematsu showing off all his wonderful talents - even if some game was remixed from FFI.
i hate all the mags and people that slagged off the random encounter system - it rocked!

Personally, I always considered FFX-2 to be Nomura's way of giving the middle finger to sakaguchi. FFX was the first time the two worked together (nomura on character designs, Sakaguchi directed) and considering Nomura's huge ego, I doubt he liked having his characters used by sakaguchi considering how different the two are in storytelling style and direction. When sakaguchi left square, Nomura had free reign and seemed to want to retell the FFX story, so he created FFX-2. Personally from a storytelling point of view I considered that to be unneccessary, and a huge mistake. The end of FFX was perfect, filled with patho's, dramatic irony, and characters coming full circle. Creating X-2 undid all that by making yuna into a valley girl and ending the FFX story with a happy happy joy joy vibe instead of the poignant, tragic yet hopeful vibe that sakaguchi created.Quote:

Wait, wait, wait...did you just say you'd call FFVIII a filler? The greatest fictional creation of all time? You've got to joking. The effort put forth in Final Fantasy VIII is obvious from the moment one views the cover- simply remarkable. Even though I don't agree that Final Fantasy IX was a filler, if any game would be accused of being such it would be IX. I am concluding this logically since FFIX was, at least partly, a tribute to the roots of Final Fantasy, resulting in an alleviation of the work required to create an entirely new story with entirely new characters and gameplay.
As far as Final Fantasy VIII goes, the mere fact that Square could come out with such a masterpiece after the phenomenal Final Fantasy VII is breathtaking.
I get this unpleasant feeling each time someone calls a Square game a ‘masterpiece’.
Ports like FFIV:Advanced are fillers. Original FF games are not.
Sorry, but to me, there's not a whole lot of difference in the greatness of classic literary works (such as War and Peace, Lord of the Rings, Romeo and Juliet) and the development of such ideas on different mediums. These different mediums, of course, being the console (or "video," if you must) game.
If Final Fantasy VII or VIII were to be novelized properly, they would surpass anything Tolkien created IMO.

I'll have to admit that X-2s battle system (not the class and class-changing system mid-battle) is one of the best I've played. It was fast pace and commands overlapped with each other to form combos, it actually made you sit there for a second saying "Not gonna use Darkness yet, gotta let the Thf begin to attack then I'll combo Darkness off it"
As for IX, imo, its the best PS1 FF. VII was amazing, and it set alot of standards, but oldschool Final Fantasy combined with the new technology that PS1 offered, made for an amazing game

Tidus was the worst main character to me, anyways, ok. FF9 has this blast from the past vibe. We all got that out of it. If you have played 1-11 you'll see how 9 kinda just shows you that even though 7 and 8 came out, don't forget the root. These games after all is called Final Fantasy, and no we didn't just start off with 7 to say we got a bunch. The only reason the second generation don't get it is because they don't understand what the crystal is!! jk
