What the hell is this?
I was playing FF2 yesterday, and I didn't notice this line until now.
It actually sounds pretty 1337; I doubt that's the correct translation, anyway.
Can I really trust this translation?
I get the feeling the retelling is pretty sham.
It's an homage by the fan translators to a classic line. It's not an accurate translation of what Borgan actually said there, but it's not like it was an important line anyway.
And for heads up if you don't know the "classic line" it's "You spoony bard!"...
"You Spoony Bard!" which is what Tellah yells at Edward is considered one of the most famous lines in Final Fantasy history and quite possibly video game history. Ted Woosley translated Square's SNES games back in the early to mid 90's (FFII, FFIII , Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, etc.) and he did a decent job considering he was always under pressure from Squaresoft to translate quickly to get the game published and sold in North America. Of course, now that Square Enix has grown and has hired more translators, the translations of their games are getting more sophisticated and accurate.
I don't remember what Tellah says in the re-translation of Final Fantasy IV on FF Anthology though...
Something along the lines of "You bastard!" I'd imagine. Got ta get those kiddies playing.

Woolsey didn't translate FFIV. Two or three Japanese guys did. The reason all the dialogue seems like it was written by someone who had a tenuous grasp on the English language was because it...well, was.Quote:

Man, Scarmiglione is a crappy name. Milon was so much cooler.
Scarmiglione is his real name. It's from The Divine Comedy. He and the 3 other fiends were named after demons in The Inferno. However, only the names were used. The characters aren't similar in any other way (Barbariccia is male and Cagnazzo has a snout). In case you're wondering, the names are Italian and translate thusly:
Scarmiglione: (actually no idea on this one, but I heard it means "snatcher", even though that can't be true...)
Cagnazzo: ummm... well "cagna" means b**ch... draw your own conslusions...
Barbariccia: curly beard
Rubicante: It seems to mean "it steals you" or something like that...
Calcabrina is from the Comedy, as well. And Farfarello, but that's FFV.

Babelfish says calca brina means crowd frost. Of course, when I type "crowd frost" and tell it to translate to Italian, it comes up with "gelo della folla". Go figure.
I thought Rubicant was from Dante's Inferno?
All of the four Fiends have names from Dante's Inferno.
They are , basically, names of people that Dante put in hell. The only one that still makes sense in modern Italian is Barbariccia, "curly beard" like DJZen was pointing out. I can do a research on their basic meaning if you want me to.

The whole spoony thing may be trying to tie in with FFIV's Tellah. I'm guessing you're playing the remake (duuuuuh!), and so the translators wanted some sort of connection...

Spoony Bard made me laugh, i'll admit, but it gets overused to oblivion and all the fun is gone.
And "You Swindler!" is a lot funnier than "You Spoony Bard!" in my opinion.
Kishi's right. You really don't get it at all. Maybe you just had to be there fifteen years ago when the game first came out.
