Serenity on DVD

Bought Serenity on DVD. That made me happy, though I was a little disappointed by the lack of decent Behind-The-Scenes features. I found it odd, considering the great featurettes on Firefly DVD set. Also, I'm told that there's a bonus disk that comes with Battlestar Galactica Season 1 that has better Serenity featurettes. That kinda annoys me, mostly because Serenity isn't really anything like other sci-fi shows, especially Battlestar Galactica. The outtakes were funny, though. Also, every deleted scene was something that I loved from the book (Yes, I read the boof and it was awesome too. :p). Not important to the story, but they are great character moments. Really wished they could have kept them in, regardless that it woulda pushed the movie far over the 2 hour mark.

One deleted scene that was missing from the bunch was a my favorite scene, a moment between Mal and Inara after they discover the secret of Miranda. It was really sweet in the book and above all scenes wished it was there. I'd say it was scrapped before shooting, but a portion of the scene is in the outakes. Nathan Fillion starts the monologue from the book, forgets his line, then does a little jig. He then takes Morena Bacharin in his arms and they dance around the set. It was amusing, but it made the lack of a deleted scene for it more unnerving for me.

The commentary was good and Joss Whedon mentions other deleted scenes that I remembered from the book, that were very much missing from the DVD. But overall, the movie is great enough that I can forgive the missing items and the lack of real featurettes.

Anyoe else checked out this treasure yet?

I saw it in theatres and will most definitely buy the DVD at some point. I'd still say it's the best movie I've seen this year.

I bought it the day of, and am in the process of forcing it upon as many people as possible. You're right, though, the extra content was a little disappointing.

However, it is nothing compared to the atrocious cover art. o.O I want to know who the hell is being all seductive wild sex womany on the cover, because that is not River. When I first picked it up, I thought it was some crazy porn spoof or something. Oh, the dismay when I realized it was the actual movie.

Whoa, I didn't know it was out already. Well cool. I'll probably bug my parents to get it for me sometime in the near future. It was good enough for me to want to buy. ;)

I'm hoping to get it for Christmas. If I don't, I'm going out and buying it tomorrow or the next day.

I wanna get it just for the Song at the beginning (Does anyone know what it's called...?)

Yay Serenity, I am getting this for Christmas, It is a great movie and I also loved the series firefly, I have even seen the un-aired episodes! I would defiantly recommend it to anyone.

I'll be getting this at some point!

Yush.. I gagged when the box art was revealed last month. Joss Whedon is apparently pretty pissed about it too. I'm hoping it will do well enough to merit a "Special Edition" or something, so Universal will put some time into it.

Heard of the show, but i didnt watch it. Heard the movie was good, saw it and simply put, i was blown away! Did this do good in the box office cause if it did a sequel would be in order!?

I recently had an opportunity to watch a back-to-back marathon of Firefly episodes, and lemme tell ya, it was rad.

Finally watched the movie. It was good, but I can't say I was blown away. Very well done intro though, and I loved the last half. Thanks to Jebus I saw the first episode, which itself was an hour and a half, basically a made-for-tv movie to jump-start the series. But it set the ground work for everything. I dunno how well I woulda enjoyed the movie had I not known as much. But the extras on the DVD about the series was awesome and makes me want the series all the more. By the way people who are interested. I dunno about any other stores, but Wal-Mart has the DVD set for the series priced under 20 bucks. Which is what I paid for Serenity. Sounds like a good deal for fans. If you're interested.

I definately prefer the more Western feel to the series. They kinda cleaned things up and pushed the scifi bit more.. It works and makes for an incredible end for the series. The series just seemed more down-to-earth is all. I'm not a big sci-fi buff really and that's what drew me to the show. The blatant lack of sci-fi elements. But, like I said, it certainly doesn't hurt the movie to have them. Just a matter of personal taste. It's still Joss Whedon at his spiffiest.

Actually, I heard that ,if Serenity did well, they would make a couple more movies. And since it seems to have done rather well, they'll probably make more.

Yeah, I know. And while it would have been awesome and every fan wanted it, we all kinda knew that it would have been a bit of a miracle for that happened. Joss Whedon was smart enough to wrap up loose threads for that reason.

As for sequels.. Dunno. It was reported that they had to make at least 50 million in the US, for a sequel to be greenlit, as it cost around that much to make. It made somewhere around 38 million worldwide. Not saying it isn't still possible, cause DVD sales could shoot through the roof, like the Firefly DVD did. We'll have to see how well the DVD does. But talk is that becuase the theatrical release was poor, a DVD success would push for sequels that are only direct-to-DVD. Which isn't horrible, but I got spoiled by seeing the ship in all its glory on the big screen. :p

Wrapping up loose ends. As in killing Preacher so that we would never find out what he used to be. :rolleyes2

But your right, he did pretty much wrap up all that was needed. I still hope for another one though.

It's been hinted at alot that if a sequel does happen, it could reveal Book's past. Joss Whedon could easily have some unknown dark thing from Book's past, the very thing that drove him away from the Alliance, come back to haunt the crew of Serenity.

I'm a huge Firefly/Serenity buff, but actually, I almost don't want another movie to be made. It tied everything up rather neatly for me. Most of what drew me into the series was River and her mysteriousness. Now that it's settled, I don't care for more. I never gave a hoot about Book.

Unless, of course, it's another TV series. Because the possibilities with that are endless.

Actually, I was more interested in Mal. River's little issues were cool and all, but Mal was always more human-like. He doesn't express alot of emotion, but you can see it his eyes and his mannerisms. Although he may not be the most honest man, you can't help but love him and hope that he works out the inner demons that trouble him.

Mal is the captain.. Book was the preacher.. River is the psychic that can kick ass. :p

I had come to think Book was formerly an Operative. First, when Book is injured in 'Safe' the Alliance is more than ready to not give a crap. Then they check his ident card, and immediately snap to giving him the best care they can. He's plainly someone special.

Second, and for me the most compelling, is the parallel between Book's desire to have people believe in something, just so long as they do believe, and the Operative's similar belief in his own work - as well as the Operative's apparent departure into some unassuming vocation at the end of the movie, having lost his faith in the Alliance "There is nothing left to see."

And finally, Book plainly demonstrates an extensive knowledge of firearms, ships, and so forth. Oh, and Early exclaims "That ain't a shephard!" after someone (Can't remember who. Inara? Edit: No, Simon.) admonishes him particularly for accosting a shephard. Also, note that Early takes Mal and Shephard out brutally and quickly, whilst he's quite happy to discourse with those he doesn't think pose a threat.

True enough. However, it's unknown whether or not Joss had already come up with Book's backstory before the movie. It's definate that he was involved with the Alliance, but the rank "Operative" wasn't revealed until the movie. It could be possible that Joss thought up that rank specifically for the movie and may not have anything to do with Book's past, just that he knows of them.

HOWEVER... In the novelization, the Operative is actually at Haven (SPOILER)when it was taken out. He specifically was the one who shot Book. It's of interest to note, that while admitting to have never met him, the Operative clearly knows of him regards him as a bit of an idol. (SPOILER)However he shoots Book, because Book shot down the Alliance ship. The Operative considered it inhonorable for a man of faith to murder "innocents", regardless of who Book used to be. The Operative uses his sword to offer honorable deaths, which he doesn't feel Book deserves, thus Book gets killed by a gun.

Based on this, it is quite possible that Book was an Operative or possibly of even higher rank.

I got the DVD and watched it last night. It was, if you can believe it, better than I remembered.

Autumn Rain: Very interesting stuff there, and I definately need to get the book. Your point that Operative is a new rank is fairly made, and I'll retract claims that Book is specifically that, but I do think it a likelihood that he was at least somewhat important in the Alliance.

The deleted scenes were great though. Poor Inara, most of those scenes were hers. xD

And the outtakes were highly amusing. Jeez those people swear alot.

Too bad there's not an option to play them in the movie and jerry-rig your own director's cut. 'Cuase I think it woulda been nice to have them within the flow. 'Course that'd make it almost a 3 hour movie I think

Everytime I watch the movie, I've thought that. There's some really good scenes, that I wish they'd left in.

Yah, the book is great. It's of interest to note that the book doesn't follow the flow of the movie. Hell, the first 4 chapters are scenes from the series. It really puts everything into context with the series and is a must.

And yeah, whether Book is an Operative or not.. It seems to me that his is either of an equal or possibly higher rank.

No words to describe how much I loved this movie.

I saw about 4 or 5 episodes of Firefly before I watched this movie (and I'm very glad I did) but a few things threw me off, like the fact that everyone seemed so surprised at what River was capable of doing. I mean, in the episodes I watched, River sliced Jayne with a knife, and saved Kaylee's life by shooting a bunch of men in 3 seconds flat. Was this whole history of River's behaivor scrapped to make things less complicated for the movie, or how exactly does Serenity fit into the timeline of Firefly?

I think they're just surprised everytime 'cause it's so sudden, and sometimes because it's more extreme then it had been before. I mean, they've been with her eight months and she's gone into freako-mode how many times? Like once a month or so? There's earthquakes once a month or so around here and each time I'm still like "OH GODS WTF!?!?!"

And then there's the "I knew she could so such-and-such but I didn't know she could do that" surprisings.

Oh yeah. And I gotta say, knowing Whedon's penchant for killing off beloved characters (Joyce :() when they were being attacked by the Reavers, I honestly thought that there was a chance that every single one of them would die.

I think that was the point. I was at the edge of my seat in the theatre. I honestly thought they would die.

And yeah, aside from her slashing Jayne and saving Kaylee, her madness was never that extreme.

When Wash died I wanted to toss up my hands and yell "THAT'S IT!" and walk out of the theater. But of course I couldn't do that 'cause Firefly/Serenity is still awesome. Wash was my favorite character though.

Yeah, I think a little part of me died right there in the theater. Book seemed a necessary evil, but Wash was just being cruel. Alas, the pains of good story-telling.

See, I think the reason for Wash's death was that Book's death would've made very little emotional impact on audiences who have never seen Firefly. Whereas, with Wash, even newbies could have over the course of the movie, fallen in love with the character. And so his death obviously would have had the punch that Whedon was looking for. I got really choked up at Book's death, and with Wash, I was just in shock.

Whedon is a master at completely ripping your heart out through the foot.

When the credits rolled, while being very satisfied with the movie, I was still very much close to tears.

I'd love to know where you heard that, seeing as how Alan Tudyk is signed on for two more movies, just like everyone else. Not to mention the fact that Joss Whedon has stated multiple times that if a sequal is made, he'd want the entire cast to return in some form.

How... how is Wash gonna return? Unless the sequels are gonna be prequels? Or is his character just gonna be used in flashbacks?

*shrugs* It's been speculated in different news and fan sites that Joss released his "ending" first, just in case he can't make three movies. Thus, prequels isn't entirely out of the question.

But in all actuallity, it could just mean flashbacks. Could be that there might have been a side-story arc for Zoe getting over Wash in future installments. Joss Whedon has been known to use flash backs to show deeper meaning or emotion.

Book, on the other hand, would almost definately be used in flashbacks to his past, as his backstory hasn't been revealed yet.

Did I miss somewhere that said they were signed on for two more movies? Where did you hear that?

The initial contract for each of Serenity's crew was for three movies. I didn't mean to make it sound like they were already going for another one. I'll find the article that mentions their contracts though. It'll just take me a sec.

I expect a trilogy then. From the information I had, they exceeded their expectation on opening weekend by at least some small amount. So that's pretty good, eh?

Not to mention it may do better with a sequel. People may see a sequel and remember they heard the first was great, go rent it, then see the new one. At least that's what I'm hoping for. As far as I'm concerned anyone who hasn't seen Serenity should be strapped in front of a TV with the DVD playing.

On another note, the local paper had some article on the top 10 underrated movies performances, and though I don't put much stock in top 10 lists generally, I was glad to see them tip their hat to Nathan Fillion, even if I think all the actors deserve some recognition for the job they did.

The best series out there.

The characters, the plot, it's all very original and very well made.

i was sooooo hapy.
plus they didn't have a terribly great budget.....

Thanks. I was amazed myself the first time I saw the show, which was after the film. The effects, the concept and the speaches are just marvelous. Best sci-fi series I've seen till now.
