It would probably be too chaotic to imagine at a site this large, but what the hell, I'll suggest it anyway. There's a really good hack on vBulletin.org for vB3.5 that manages to update instantaneously without having to refresh, which should kill the bandwidth concerns somewhat.

I think it's that box at the top of some forum pages that sort of scrolls through what some of the post are, but I more than likely am totally wrong. If that's what it is though, I don't like them. They're way too busy looking.
A saybox is, in my experience, generally at the bottom of the site. It's like a universal thread/faux chat. People can put in their names and post replies and such. With as much traffic as we get, it'd get really chaotic really fast.
It's kind of like a chatroom. It has nothing to do with what's in the posts; there's one on FG if you want to go look. xD

I'm all for the idea, but not on this site. It would be way too busy and most of the posts would probably end up being requests for help in some Final Fantasy game, or something equally annoying.
It has it's novelty, but not something we need. I think it would clutter up the forums index. If people want to chat they can go to the chat room.
Excess spam is reduced by the usernotes so this would be reduntant.

But Leeza brings up the point of having to moderate it. I don't know about you guys but I would NOT want to have to sift through hundreds of posts every half an hour to make sure everybody was playing nice.
I'm hardly a spammer, but even my count is up to 952.
I definitly agree with Void. Moderating this thing would be a nightmare.

If it really becomes a problem to moderate it, you could always do what I do when problems like this crop up and add new staff members. xD

I actually happened to be on Fool's Gold today and saw the thing. I found it to be very suitable for that environment, which is to say it would be completely inappropriate for any venue even approaching common decency.

I like this idea. You really wouldn't have to moderate it. On FG after so many replies they get chopped off and are not viewable...at least from what I remember of the old shout box. I like the crazyness of it.

The swear filter is on a global replacement, at least for smurf and. So the shoutbox would automatically filter itself.
The problem with jerks isn't that they swear so much as it is that they post at all.
One time at FG I raped everyone with a 56K modem by posting ALL the smilies on one line in the shout box :D
