What's in a name? (spoilers)

This thought just occurred to me. Remember how Vivi is a prototype black mage, produced by Kuja? The mages in the Black Mage Village are also products of Kuja's evil plan. Now, the mages in the BMV are given numbers with which to identify themselves. Could it be that 'Vivi' is not in fact a name, but a number written in Roman numerals? If this were true the little mage we all love could be known as:

Black Mage No. 66,
Black Mage No. 5151,
Black Mage No. 516,
Black Mage No. 651, or
Black Mage No. 541.

What are your thoughts on this?

That is a very interesting theory, you have. Vivi was one of the first Black Mages, so I think that if VIVI is in fact a roman numeral then his number would be pretty low.

Good theory XD even though I always saw Vivi as the No. 1. I mean, if he isn't, then the ones before him should be pretty important, since they should be like VIvi.

I can't believe no one's ever written about this. I always thought Vivi was just the pronunciation of "VV." In this case, his number could have also been 55.

You are forgetting the entire story. I mean every thing Vivi talks about it is "life" and, even in english as a prefix, Vivi means life or some form, such as lively. He fights for his life and others, he constantly thinks about "stopping". I really do think you are trying to find some sort of deeper meaning, and there isn't. Also his full name makes sense too, Vivi Ornitier, because Ornitier looks like Ornerier, which means "bad disposition or mean", a typical black mage and fighting machine, which is what Kuja wanted and together they form a kind of Spanish "long live" or "Life of" meaning Life of Hate or probably Death.
That is what I thought...I didn't see numbers, but I could be wrong. My way, does, make sense in a way.

-EDITED-Also, you disproved your theory in your post. Since you said Vivi was the protoype that means he was the first, because a prototype is the original base for the later models...in which he truley is, and there is no such thing as a protype higher or lower than one...because that would be an oxymoron.

Yes and with a prototype you, usually, have just one, which is the original idea or base for the rest. The chance of there being enough prototypes that he, Vivi, would be 55 or any number that exceeds like....five is just unbelievable and farfetch.

Consider this, they were working with the mist, which they really didn't know much about, to create something capable of magic, which tends to be outside the realm of science, and something that is capable of developing its own personality. If thats the case, they would have had many many failures, which is quite reasonable. The fifty fifth try actually sounds a little low to me for dealing with these factors.

ive also heard that if written in hexidecimals, "VIVI" would be "FF". (not that i have any clue how hexidecimals work, thats just what i read.)

Vivi is a word, not a number. -_-
255 is FF in hexadecimals.

I thought his grandpa named him Vivi.

actually,by the standards of the creators of black magi,vivi is NOT a successful prototype.the reason is,vivi has free will,and it makes him a failure.

and i believe it was quan who gave vivi's name,being vivi's "grandpa" and all.if that is true,then the chances that quan would know that vivi is a black mage would be very slim,let alone giving vivi a name that represents a number for being a black mage.

Well, in the game they tell u. When u go to the cave near Treno when ur with Vivi it shows his grandpa(wich is the same race as Quina). They tell u that he got his name from his grandpa. Nice Theory though.:D

Yes there is, because even if your name is something as common as Nick or something not so common...it has a meaning and an origin.

If he got his name from his grandpa instead of other sources is what make the difference here.

knowing the giver of the name is a very big factor in understanding what a name really means.and as i said,since it was quan who gave the name to vivi,it is really improbable that the name "vivi" would mean a certain black mage number,because quan barely even knows what vivi is and that black magi have numbers.

The games aren't connected, but there are references and tributes throughout, FFIX having more than usual as it was the last FF for the PSX, and so paid tribute to its predecessors.

But it could be. As I say, we will have to wait till the last final fantasy to find out the answer. which will be never. because final fantasy isn't final. lol.
