Why does everybody hate FFII

I mean sure the dungeons are hard and long and no saving, but it's like that with FF1 and 3 also and those were not rated as poorly

The leveling up system where INT. and STR. Conflict can be easily overcomed by eveningly using both... I LOVED the leveling up system, you get stronger only when you need it...

Limited Item systems are more stratgic (yay Parasite Eve!) Although with FFII I have to admit, It could have done better without it...

I can't deny the lacking of any plot involving our main three heroes, the temporary fourth characters usually have more plot devolopment surronding them...

The graphics were kick-ass compared to the original, battle animations, so many different palletes and nice facesets...

And one-word, Xtal

So... why does everyone hate it?

You kidding? I love FFII. I've beaten it at least four times on my GBA. When I'm not playing Fire Emblem or FFIV Advanced, I'm playing FFII.

FF2 wins almost all the time. Except perhaps when faced against Wolverine.

I love FF II. It's one of my favorite FFs. I love the fact that you can customize your characters in any way that you like

I dunno but them, but to me FFII still has the best levelling system

people should stop these "why does everyone hate" threads because they always get replies from people who like the game. all of us like pretty much every FF. FF2 wasnt the best for me but was still a great challenge and game and i have nothing against it.

I like to sorta overlook amano's artwork as being the real character design for anything.

And even in Amano artwork he is cute, if anything he is more cute on Amano then in avatar... as for Lionheart, umm... his Amano artwork makes his lip really big and throws it off, the pictures with the less detailed lips look MUCH nicer

FF2 was OK, but I personally like the system of experience instead of FF2's system. Plus the magic went basically unused for me because i hated that system too. I liked the plot however, and the fact that you could carry two weapons. I pretty much said "[img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img] shields" and used 2 weapons the whole game. All in all, I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Because the graphics suck that's why!!!!! :mad:

I find this a stupid reason to hate the game. xD Obviously this is an old game, but it's a classic. Old games should be judged on how entertaining they are, not by how pretty looking they are.

Anyway, I love FF2. It definitely isn't one of my favorites and wasn't the funnest for me, but there are a lot of things I do like about it.

Really? In my game, Layla doesn't use magic at all. I just give her 2 knives and theif gear and watch her pwnz the hell out of gigases while dodging every hit.

She COMES with Lit, and has terrible attack power, and decent INT. ... she's a more a mage...

Well that's yet another fun thing about FFII. It doesn't matter how a character starts out, you can train them to be anything you like. Since Layla is a pirate, I figured "why not make her a theif?" It worked suprisingly well and that was actually the moment when I realized that evasion is MUCH more important than defense.

I always gave Guy tons of armor, but he also took WAY more damage than anyone else. When I realized Layla had the highest evasion and always took the least amount of damage, I realized that defense in FFII is useless.

People hate FF2 the same reason they all hate FF9, 'they are horrible idoits'

I personally didn't care for the leveling system or the plot. The plot just didn't scream "Final Fantasy" to me--just like FFT didn't either. It was more of a tyrannical empire takes over the world then throw in some magic and a couple of other fantasy elements.

Also, the codeword/key item system was unnecessary. You could find yourself knowing exactly where to go and what to do, but have to backtrack an hour because you forgot to mention "Sunfire" to someone.

The leveling system is innovative, but it is easily abused and hard to level up legitimately. I think they should have kept the way to level weapons, but kept stats to an EXP level-up basis.

That particular plot element got used in FFIV and FFVI and FFVII and FFIX and FFT and FFTA and probably FFXII.

Anyhoo, they actually did re-use the weapon skill and magic skill system in FFXI. However, the stat increases in FFXI work very differently. It's a similar concept, but the execution isn't familiar to FFII fans. It's possible that it will also be used in FFXII (aka FFXI Offline), but it's hard to say based on the demo alone.

Actually, you can miss out on some stuff depending on when you use the key words. (I missed out on the second blood sword because I entered the Whirlwind too soon:cry: )

having 2 blood swords is the FFII equivalent of putting master summon and counter and mime materia on everyone. Not that OHKs aren't fun, but it is kinda overkill.

Didn't they take the second one out of later ports?

FF II is cool. But it seems like you appreciate it more AFTER you beat it. With me at least...

Yeah, it's weird the first time around since it's more open-ended in the beginning than most games. Sure, you could go to Phin and talk to Scott like Hilda tells you to, or you could wander too far north and get killed.

It's more subtle than that-- you make your own, which is more fun for me, at least;)

While you can make your own, you're still better off leaning toward one of the standards from FFI. Except Red Mage. Red Mages are a bad idea in FFII for oh so many reasons... shame, really.

Got that right. I guess that's an advantage to the GBA version. No reducing stats = increases across the board with consistency.

It's still not a great idea in DoS since you have to raise TWO magic stats. That and the more spells you have to learn, the slower it's gonna be to level up.

Probably the best way to go about it (and the best way to do Red Mages period) is to specialise in Buff/Debuff spells. The magic stats don't really apply for the Buff skill, more the skill level. Plus using them in every battle will soon knock them up. Plus their effects are usually consistent (Aura needs to be higher level to be more effective). Debuffers are a bit iffy, but again it's more the spell level itself. Offensive wise nothing beats a good old melee weapon.

I prefer a good knuckle sammich myself.

I only give Firion shields. Everyone else uses two hands for weapons. And yeah, Red Mages are a bad idea here. I always make Maria a Black Mage and Firion a Paladin. Everyone else sticks to physical attacks

Well I do like the idea of a buff/debuff red mage, but shields = no.

The only gripe I have about IIJ is the fake walls. *Inserts &^%$#@!*

People don't like FFII because they were never desperate to play it and see what it was like while the rest of us were.

Because it is rather odd, the music isn't as good, there are planes constantly moving on the world map and there is NO PROPER LEVELING UP. 'nuff said

I didn't like FFII because of the story. I was not impressed, having seen this used several times already. Also, the characters KEPT DYING! That annoyed me to no end, bothering to level them up, stat them out, equip the hell out of them, only to have them die an hour later. And they kept doing it!

Once I figured out how the levelling system worked, however, I sat outside the city right at the beginning and had my guys beat the hell out of one another for hours until they were all super strong in defense, magic, and attack. That was my strategy.

I didn't hate the game, but I didn't really enjoy it either. The bosses were all quite easy and the music was only nominal, as opposed to later great themes like in FFVI and beyond.

Barefist, try it, you'll love it.

I loved this game. I had made Maria a bare with a few white magics, Guy a large axe toting warrior and I equipped Firion as a theif with a few black magic spells and used his evasion to cause mass chaos.
I also loved the story and this is in my top 2 FF's. Its a great game with a story that set the archetype for alot of games.

I think FFII suffers because of when it was released. It gets compared against current games, rather than the games of it's time. This is especially noticable when people say that the story is weak and/or cliched. :rolleyes2

Yeah, if anything, FFIV, FFVI, FFVII and FFIX were biting FFII. :D

I know I'm going to get tied to a stake and burnt for this...but I liked FF2 more than FF1! It actually had a story, the characters actually spoke (!) albeit generically, but the story was more engaging and realistic in my opinion.
FF2 is only poorly rated now because by the time we got it a couple of years ago it paled against more recent, better developed FFs (e.g. VII!!). But back in its day I think FF2 excelled against other RPGs in its genre.
I also really liked the battle system, it was a break from the old levelling-up chestnut, even though it was underdeveloped and could be exploited easily (Maria: "This is for your own good, Firion." SPLAT! HP up. Firion grins and casts Cure, etc). Tee hee hee

FFII used to be one of my favourite FF games. But yeah, I haven't really played it for quite a while. It becomes tedious after a few dungeons.

lol i actually enjoyed this game quite a bit, i just beat the final boss today. Even though everybody hates the way u lvl up i thought of it as a twist to the traditional RPG lvling up.

I don't think I'll hate FFII when I get around to it, but I'm looking forward to playing it after I beat FFVI and buy Origins and beat FFI; hopefully this Summer.

Yea, when I first tried it the way you level threw me off and I stopped playing too soon. (I didn't like how FFX level stats separately either though). I was pretty FFFull at the time.

I totally forgot about this game, I guess I'll see if I can borrow my cousin's DOS again.

I like VII - It was my first FF - I've played 7,8,1,2, and about to beat 3 - and I've loved them all. - I don't see why 7 is something to downtalk - or downtalk it if someone likes it- EVEN IF it did get so mainstream and everybody has a copy whether they're a REAL FF fan or not. It's a good game. :)

There has been one final fantasy that has dissapointed me and thats FF 6 i just didn't like it from the start maybe i didnt get far enough but i just quit with it. Only bad thing about FF2 is it gets tedious with the same thing happening over and over and so many ambushes in battle

I KNOW! Everyone constantly says that FFVI is the BEST FF out there. When I played it, I got so bored quickly. Surprisingly, I like FF2 better than 6. I think people just started to like FFVI because FFVII became too popular so they directed their attention to the previous FF (which happened to be 6) as to not be part of the "crowd".

Back on topic, I like FFII but the problem with it was that is was a tad drawn out. Other than that, I loved FFII.
