worst bowl ever

I am absolutly discusted at the ref job done at the superbowl this year. The steelers are out played, and mereley winning because of some of the worst calls (and reviews) I have EVER seen in NFL history. I am sure I have lost faith the officiating representatives health plans, at least as far as optomitry is involved.

I have not even like many of the comercials :( total bummer

Anyways, what are your thoughts on the bowl so far? Gratned, I am asking at the third quater, but I think I am done watching it this year.

This is the most boring one I've ever seen. That's even including the 2 consecutive years I was sick to the point of feeling like burning myself to know I was alive..... but I'm friggin sick again THIS YEAR!!!!! Not as bad, aware enough to know how STUPID the ref is and how boring the game is... The halftime show was good though!

Well to top it off the worst team in the match won, and because of bad calls. I hate ABC just as much for hardly even questioning this questionable game. Thier half time coverage was horible. The fact of the matter is that the seahawks owned this game, and the stealers walk away with the completley undeserving win, and cocky smiles like they think they deserved the win. I even liked the stealers, until tonight. There is somehing called class, and that is somthing obviously absent on the Steelers side.

As far as the complete lapse of Accurate officiating, is there any messure that the NFL will ever take to improve it? From what I have seen, the last years have held the WORST calls I can recall. Not just in the superbowl, but in the regular season as well. This super bowl is just the icing on my cake... I am not just trying to rant cause the seahawks I was pulling for lost, but because I was hoping to see a decent football game, obviously somthing this NFL is not capable of providing anymore. Don't blame it on let down either, I am a Vikings fan, I am used to that side of the coin :p

Just as a whole, the NFL dropped the ball on ensuring a good game. As for the half time show, it was pretty cool.

Mind you, the Seahawks made a couple of dumb plays, but still. I could have done a better job of officiating, and my experience extends to some videogames. =/

Overall though, I'd have to lay the blame squarely with Grant Wistrom.

This year's superbowl and the connected commercials were ass.

I don't see how the Seahawks could've won if the refs made any different calls. They didn't lose any turnovers or TDs. They lost one 20 yard or so catch to Stevens and that's about it.

However: the "incomplete" pass to Stevens in the first quarter was a fumble. As was Hasselbeck's dive who was "down by contact" because someone touched his jersey as he was going down.

EDIT: I watched the game with people who hated the Steelers and were rooting for the Seahawks, and they had no complaints. In fact, they admitted that the refs screwed the Steelers over for those two plays that should've been turnovers.

If a guy is going to the ground and gets touched, that is considered a tackle. That call was right to be overturned.

Either way, Steven's drop was still a fumble. So the Steelers would've had at least one more turnover and the refs didn't take away anything nearly so big from the Seahawks.

It's been that way ever since I've been watching football, which is going on 17 years now.

They took away a first quarter touchdown on an offensive pass interference call that most people thought was questionable at best.

...what? Ok, so he fully extends his arm against a player who then doesn't move. That's sort of what refs look for. Looked pretty obvious to me.

I am so sick and tired of listening to Steelers bashing.

They're a good team, they did a lot this season to earn their way to that stage.

This kind of thing happens every year, people don't like the team that wins and immediately look for some reasons on how the other got "cheated". It's nothing new.:rolleyes2

Hasselbeck just sort of lost it in the second half. It looked like Pittsburgh was pressuring more then, too. But those sort little 1-5 yard passes as the clock was ticking down were just retarded.

I feel the refs may have taken away more momentum from the Seahawks than the Steelers did. However, the Steelers had their share of calls against them before, and they were able to outplay the refs (Exhibit A: Colts game). The Seahawks offense instead seemed to crumble under poor play. And I mean, that double reverse Randal El pass to Hines Ward? That was just way too insane. If your team can pull that play off, damn man, just go ahead and take the trophy, you freaking deserve it.

Both defensive units were fantastic, however. I was thoroughly impressed.

I have to give some credit to the Steelers. The Parker run and the TD pass from Randal El to Ward were pretty impressive.

Also, Josh Brown didn't do the Seahawks any favors missing two (admittedly long) field goals.

ahahaha, that's exactly what a friend of mine said. He was rooting for Seattle (he didn't give a damn about the Seahawks, he just didn't like Pittsburgh) but after that TD pass to Hines War from Randal El, he basically said "Ok, the Steelers deserve to win just because of that play." xD

EDIT to RSL: the 54-yard one barely counts. xD The other one was a legitimate miss, though, and even though it didn't make a difference to the final score, it still could've been a momentum turner.

What realy makes this Super Bowl suck is that the Steelers won (god I hate them). But ya, the refs did a piss poor job. 6 months to go until next season....

Anywyas, yeah, the bad calls ( and that they were) took a lot of momentum away from seattle, (to say anything else is a joke) and even gave the steelers a clearly missed Touchdown. This lead the steelers to a a 7 to 3 lead in halftime. The touchdown was out, and Madden had a cow on that, the illegal blocking (or whatever) was called on a tackle! I mean WTF! Then the holding play, which was never reviewed (save by madden on ABC) was clearly a mistake. Not just a mistake, but one that costed the Seahawks a HUGE play. On that note, it was hard to see how the ref even cried holding, especially when the action was happening not feet away. The @#$ BJ coulda called it better than the LJ in my opinion.

What else, ah yeah the OPI that costed them a TD - that was nearly bull, a call - but that is nearly the equivilent for some over zealous ref that calls offensive holding on every damn play. Let the boys play football, the recever was just breaking innto scramble, and the arm motion could have arguably been our for 'herding' purposes. Its kinda like runing into someones fist imo. I can live with that call though.

I have to agree with ya raist, the Stealers (as I shall now call em) had a few great plays, but if that is really the mark of a great team, the vikes would be sitting a little better :p

As for the cocky smiles, I was not calling them out for savoring victory, but to display themselves in such an undeserving manor took a lack of class, and that is what I meant by cocky smiles. Personally, I really didn't care who won (I did want to see the Seaducks do it though- kinda), I just wanted to see a decent football game. What I did get was a poorly run game officiated by a referee whom should have stayed coaching high school sports (as it was mentioned he did, while Coach Mike H. was coaching HS level - funny factoid). I really expected more, I guess. It was a dissapointment either way.

The stealers were outclassed, outgunned, and out played for the first (nearly) three quaters. After that the ducks seemingly just got sick of it, as did I. I Actually gave my wife controll of the remote for the remainder 4th quater. She kept it there, and she found herself as befuddled as I was.

Either way, with the NFL ranking in its grossly illrewarded dough from this game, the should give 100% optical coverage to thier ref - no case there.

One of the worst officiated games I ever seen, Big Ben turns in a a pretty sub par game going 9-21 gaining only 123 yards, and Matt Hassleback turns in a great game going 26-49 with 273 yards, and Seattle still loses. Looks like the refs were buying into the whole homecoming thing. nobody from Michigan likes Bettis, he went to Notre Dame, traitor if you ask me.

Anyway, one touchdown called back, a mystery holding penalty and bad clock managment cost the Seahawks the game, MVP refs.

All I have to say to NFL.com is bullcrap!

And I had $10 on the Seahawks!

Roethlisberger's td was not a td, but the Steelers would probably have pounded it in on 4th down anyway. That first quarter td pass was totally not pass interference, though.

There were some close calls. Overall it wasn't too compelling, but not the worst ever.

Raiders-Bucs was the worst ever. :cry:

When did the ground start being able to cause a fumble? He was down - at least one knee and one elbow - before the ball popped out. Doesn't matter if he was downed by contact or not, at least not as I've ever understood it.

But, I can't deny, that was one hell of a TD the Randal El/Ward play managed.

The "ground can't cause a fumble" rule is only significant when someone is being tackled. For instance, when Randal El on that one punt return dove threw the air, was practically killed, and then fell, his forearm hit the ground and the ball popped out. However, the forearm counts as being down - thus, no fumble.

If Hasselbeck hadn't been touched and just dove/fell to the ground, and wasn't down by contact, the ball and the play are still live.

This Superbowl wasnt bad in the fact that it was interesting till about 5 min left in the 4th quarter, but it probably would have been better had the officials not gotten flag happy. Their have been plenty of great superbowls,most recently Titans vs Rams, Patriots vs whoever, but sometimes you may get a Ravens vs Giants or a Bucs vs Raiders game and those were terrible in terms of one team came to play and the other didnt.

Werent they though, I think it was a little qb to coach confusion, because they could have put up some points just before half, not nearly as bad as Donovan Mcnabb forgetting the play in the huddle last year. Some teams just cant handle the pressure of a big game.

Also does anybody know why Brady through the coin toss this year, does the NFL really love this guy that much, I mean I thought I wouldnt have to see his stupid smile for another 6 months.

Hasselbeck was clearly touched, although it was a minor touch while he was already in the act of falling.

This looks like a thread from a Seahawks fan who was sad that his team lost. I, as an anti-Seahawks fan, thought the game was fine. Not very exciting, but at least BOTH teams had their fair share of bad calls.

$10 is a lot of money for me. So $30 bucks makes you rich. That really sucks that you lost it.

It was a decent enough game, I liked last years game alot more, asa whole my family (step-dad, mom, myself) lost $750 on it.

Not because the team we bet for lost or anything, we had the Steelers winning ever since the Colts lost, but because we participate in a "score grid" thing, where the last number in the score for each team allows you to win money depending on the score at the end of the quarter.

If that damned trick touchdown hadn't happened, and the Steelers only kicked a field goal than we would have had $5k.

This was my second Superbowl. It didn't compare to New England and Carolina at all. In all though, the Steelers won...even though some calls were touchy.

Obviously, since both teams didn't get the same amount of penalties, the refs are corrupt! I mean, that should never happen, right? Who's heard of one teaming actually committing more penalties for more yards than another?

read my post, I plainly say I was not a Seahawk fan, though I was routing for em - and as I said, I am a Vikings fan used to dissapointment.

Not a fan by an volation. I just wanted a good clean football game, and was robbed. Definatley bad calls on both ends (Seaducks and Stealers). I feel that the biggest inmpact was on the higlighted calls and uncalls vs. the seaducks.

My anger was not towards anyteam (save for the stealers eating grins - which was just more of an inuslt upon injury thing) just the general interference of the MVP refs.

It was pretty frustrating to watch. The Super Bowl is supposed to be dazzling football, and the teams are supposed to be good enough to not be caught up in officiating technicalities. Man, give me that Rose Bowl back any day. The last decent Super Bowl I remember was Rams v. Titans. The longest yard... man what a finish.

Worst call of the game, on Hasselbecks interception he runs to tackle the guy and he is called for an illegal clipping or something GOING FOR THE TACKLE! Pitt gets the football 15 yards father than when the play ended. I have played and watched football for 13 years and have never seen a call like that. Also on 3rd and 6 the play clock clearly winds down to 0, Big Ben signals the timeout about 2 seconds after the fact, and the official gives it to him, Madden tries to justify the refs and says that its hard for the ref because he has to look at the ball and the clock before he can give the signal, it was a halfassed attempt though. Instead of it being 3rd and 11 it was 3rd and 6, and Steelers convert drive down the field and score their last touchdown.

It was funny how Woody Page and Skip Bayless were killing the refs on 1st and 10 today. I went to an open gym today and everyone was in agreement that the Seahawks got screwed, note that these are non-biased kids from Michigan, who just wanted to see a good game.

I've seen a call like that before. It's illegal to hit a blocker below the knees while going for the ball carrier. It's directly in the rule book. It was a bad call simply because Hasselbeck barely touched the guy, though.

I think I saw the officials wearing "For you Bettis" arm bands, could just be my T.V. reception though.

Also the Superbowl is the #1 rated Television event in the United States every year. Over a 1/3rd of the country watches it. That is huge. I am not sure how well the world cup does for its final game though. Any one have numbers?

That said the calls were bad here and there but not so much that the Seahawks couldn't win. They defeated themselves. They had so many chances and they could not get the job done. Steelers got lucky.

Yep. No one here really gave a . The US has its own Soccer league also but no one really knows about it and then the small % of people who do know about...probably half don't give damn about it. I have never seen one of their games televised either...even on ESPN I have never seen it. Poker is televised on ESPN. That is how low soccer is in the USA.
