FFV "challenge" thread

I say challenge but i doubt it will be tbh. More just a bit of fun.

Firstly i should mention that i may not start this for at least a week, most two weeks but i am really looking forward to it so thought i'd get a thread going.

Basically, i want to beat final fantasy five with a single player.
Some of you may have read the single player x-death challenge i attempted which is kinda the biggest hurdle already jumped. I did a single player verses shinryu two days ago too so thats that covered. But earlier on in the game or through world two when you don't have all the available abilities i have now may prove to be tough. I'm thinking Archeoavis and Atomos to be tough.

But before i start i want some opinions on how i should aproach Minotauras and Omniscient. I don't have a choice about using another character here. I would really like to finish the game with three of my characters on their initial levels. But i have a high chance of being owned that way. I may be able to beat them by teaching a level 3 character high ability skills but leveling the AB points without leveling up would take a decade with the amount i'd need.

Also, does anybody wish to accompany me on my "challenge"? Might spark some interest in here and we could compare notes after certain events :greenie:

I got owned in the wind shrine :mad: i was actually scared to go back in there. Scared of the first dungeon :( not a good start!
There are winged creatures in there that use aero which hits for about 70HP. So i levelled my character to level 9 and tried to avoid battles in there. A back attack is seriously deadly atm. In fact it's pretty much instant game over.

Wing raptor died with the help of some tonics :)


Now I'm going to level a few more levels. I just made my character a Monk so he has noticabley more HP and his 'Kick' can defeat a group of enemies outside the windshrine in one go so no more being punched by enemies that always out number me :)



Edit: For the next boss (karl boss in the canal) i was going to need cure coz tonics weren't cutting it anymore. But a white mage couldn't actually hurt anything so i learned black1 and gave that to a mage to train for white1. Then put white1 on my monk. Karl boss got in first attack which paralysed me, then he tail screwed me and finished me off before i could do a thing. I'm at level 12 at this point and all i can really do is level up. Theres nothing to protect from paralyses and no spells like regan are available yet to heal without needing to execute a move so i'm pretty much stuck.
Might have to rely on luck and see if i can avoid being paralysed, then i might stand a chance. Being a little bit faster from gaining a few levels might help too. The extra HP i get from being a monk class isn't really helpful in this battle so i'll aim for speed and use a Theif.

I don't like being owned, i'll try again tomorrow :)

if you learn a lot of magic and doublecast and go onto a bare class to maximise to the amount of abilities you can use you should have a good chance but you will need tons of leveling up.

Leveling up will be difficult with only one party member but it will also be quick, with him getting everyone elses EXP :)

At the place where i am now, i only have Black mage, whitemage, Blue mage, Theif, Monk and Knight. So i'll have to use my brain to beat this next boss. I'm trying again soon so i'll see how it goes.

I agree with you about learning Redx2. The key to this challenge is to be able to do more than one thing in a turn.

Progress report :): I think i have an idea how to wipe this boss off the face of the planet (errm maybe) I need to learn an ability which needs 60 ability points to learn so i'm doing that now. Which means i'll gain a few levels. Fingers crossed

Okay, i levelled up to a pretty respectable level18 in the torna canal. The enemies there don't attack males so i didn't have to heal at all.

Originally i was going to give a Knight the Counter command and just Gaurd. I'm hitting for 400HP damage a turn so i only needed to hit him twice. But he always got first attack and paralyzed me. Which meant i was helpless.

When i was levelling up, i watched my speed stat and it didn't increase at all regardless of what job class i used. My character as a Monk or Knight had just 26 on his speed stat but as a theif he had a nice 41. So i switched for a theif for this battle and gave him the Barefist command so he could inflict the same damage he did as a monk. I got first attack and hit for 400HP. He Used Tentacal as expected and paralyzed me. Then by shear luck he used an ordinary attack instead of his Tail screw. After being paralyzed my time bar resets so he gets another attack and used Tail screw then. That put me on single digit HP but i get a turn next because i'v recovered from paralysis so i hit him again to finish him. Phew

I saved in the ship graveyard near Siren and will attempt her likley on thursday. I don't take her to be too difficult.

redx2 will be a bugger to get though. it take 999 point to learn so just go to a point where the enemies give you a lot of AP and stay there for a while.

If i started training one now, i probabley would still be training come world three. I'll use pheonix tower for a quick boost and level in the area where you find Odin. I can probabley do without it until then i think. :cool:

Quick update. Destroyed siren (level 18) destroyed magissa and faltzer (level 19) and destroyed graula (level 20)

all pretty easy because of the levelling up i did in prep for karl boss.

Now im just learning black2 in prep for the shiva battle. the off to karnak

Sorry for not updating this very often, im not playing much.

Shiva went down against my awesome power (level 23) and liquidflame went down (level 24)

ATM i have left the fire ship after defeating liquidfllame (aparantley you can do that) and have saved. I need to learn the Blue mage skill "learning" before i do the karnak escape mission. I really need to learn "doomclaw" from ironclaw before i leave. Doomclaw also paralyses so i need to grab the ribbon on the way out and use a bare class fighter with a learning skill and ribbon equipped to survive it without being KO'd from being reduced to single digit HP and being paralysed.

It seems pretty easy but that is because of the mass levelling up i had to do to survive Karl boss. Shiva was a little challenging but nothing i couldn't handle. Garula was so easy. A Protes spell to protect from his physicals and then inflicted most damage from counter attacking. Liquidflame dies in three hit from having ice2 cast on a sword which did over 1000HP damage a shot. I could even have made that easier by learning 2-handed, but it didn't matter because even with all the missed attacks (high eveade rate that bugger) i still disposed of him quickly. But the super challengers will come later. Like i said before, Archeoavis and Atamos may prove to be very tough. The elderly tree boss is normally a tough one, but i'm sure he won't prove too difficult. X-death who casts Condemn at the start of the battle may be tough because i will have to defeat him before the countdown reaches zero. Bahamut might (MIGHT) be tough but i havn't decided yet whether or not im worried about him.

I am going to have to raise another character from his base level, and it will have to be Galuf. He will fight one on one with Gilgamesh and later krile will fight Omniscient. So long as every battle is fought with only a single character, then it shouldn't matter who that character is.

So far, the most annoying thing has been the enemies which confuse you. I have been favoring the Monk class and have learned HP+10% with it already. The kick attack has been my best friend. So when i become confused, i kill myself with my first attack. Random battles may prove to be more challenging than the bosses. I can be outnumbered 5 to 1 in a random encounter, and if that's a back attack, i'm pretty much screwed. I have died at least 4 times from back attacks. That's why i stick with my Monk class, he has high HP and inflicts a decent amount of damage on all enemies with his Kick attack. But i know that won't help me much as i progress through the game. I'll have to see how it goes. I know i'm not giving up easy though

Well, good luck with the rest of the game. I must say...It truly would be a feat if you did beat the game with only one character( however unlikely though). :D

Update: Hmmmmm Doomclaw still parlyses you regardless of being equiped with a ribbon. But his other ttacks did 0 damage so he couldn't kill me. So i learned it no probs.

I took the easy route with Ifrit and Byblos and used elemental rods to finish them quickly. Then used Doomclaw on Ramuh to finish him quickly (despite it failing the first three times, probabley would have been quicker to punch him with my monk) Then slughtered a Quadrharpy to get Aquarake and finished the sandworm quickly too.

Defeated the very easy Clay claw. Adamantaim put up a fight but i finished him in one go. I couldn't kill him quickly with level 5 doom because i can't learn it.

The cannons outside the ronka ruins werent too much trouble. My coral ring meant the flame cannons couldn't hurt me, and the missile cannons only take half of your current HP so they werent really a threat.

Sol cannon however took me three tries. From the first try i learned i'd never beat him without haste. But hadn't learned any time magic so just equiped a time mage. Mainly i just broke Bolt rods (about 6 until i ran out) but he puts up a defense thing so they werent really doing alot of damage. His beam cannon got me about 5 times during the battle, and it takes half of your maximum HP. So i switched my lightening rod to the healing staff a lot to heal. (theres no upgrade to tonics yet, and i didnt want to waste the elixers ive found in chests)
I also cast regan on mayself but it gave me back ONE HP every turn :mad:

Anyway he eventually went down. Now im ready for the ronka ruins and the almighty Archeoavis :) i'm looking forward to fighting him

Update: Yay i beat him :) he was tough, took me a second try to beat him. But i lose galuf now and he is still on his base level at level 1. He will fight gilgamesh one on one shortly so i couldn't save after beating archeoavis. I need to take galuf back to the earliest stage in the game and start leveling him up

OK i levelled Galuf to level 20 which should be more than enough for taking on Gilgamesh. Archeoavis gave me more trouble the second time (i forgot to unequip my coral ring so his lightening attack took half my HP every time. He also favoured it above everything else, but i went in with Blue magic and prevailed using Blowfish and Whitewind) Then Pyuroboros, Titan and Kimabrain all went down VERY easily. They are only sub bosses imo so no surprise really that they were so easy.

I'm going to stock up on Tonics (yup, still no potions available at this point) and elemental rods. And need to buy an Angel ring because there are some enemies on the other side who like to use Zombie status attacks. Then i'm ready for world 2. Which i will get started on this weekend.

Every enemy, boss or other in world one has been defeated one on one :) Bring on world 2

I have too say that I'm impressed that you've made it so far. I hope world two is as smooth and easy as you found the first the world. :)

I don't know if it's too late to suggest this, but I wouldn't keep three characters at level 1. Level them all in different ways, and then use the character that fits the current dungeon the best.

That is a really good idea. But i can only level one character at a time and tbh it gets very repetitive. I think my primary character will prevail through most battles with some quick prep before hand. Once i hit world two it's going to be (possibley) impossible to level up a character and i'm not spending any more time in world one :p

I'm working almost everyday at the moment so i'm not picking this up again for about a week. But when i do, i should start getting through it quickly. Carbunkle is my main worry for world two. Im not overly worried about the other bosses (though that'll probabley change when they pwn me :D )

I have a few questions:

What character are you using? (Just Bartz? Someone else?)

Are there any other rules for the challenge?

Will you write a guide or "journal" or something for your challenge? :cat:

I'm using Bartz simply because you start the game with him. The only rule is i'm never alowed to use more than one character in any battle, random or boss. I'm not allwoed to attack anything until i have killed my other three party members. So when i levelled Galuf, i killed Bartz.

I am writing a rough guide on paper as i progress, which will end up on my FFV website at some point. When i type it out i will do it in greater detail so anyone who reads it can just follow what i have done and do the same :)

I wasn't going to pick up again until the weekend but i decided to continue for a while tonight.

World two:

Abducter went down incredable fast and easy.

Gilgamesh battle one was extremely quick. My monk did huge damage and countered a lot while also getting in a critical hit.

The bridge was very simple. I just used my Monks kick command to clear all the battles. Actually, there were very few battles, less than i remembered so that was good.

Gilgamesh battle two was a joke. I did the same as i did for the first gilgy battle, but this time i wasn't using level 20 Galuf, but level 36 Bartz. So the battle ended as quickly as my first gilgy battle.

I made a huge f*** up here. I meant to buy an Angel ring from world one before i left. When i looked in my inventory, i realised i had a spare Coral ring. Muppet that i am, i bought another coral ring :mad: Turns out i didn't need an angel ring after all. I remember some flying pigs here using zombie spells which is why i wanted the angel ring. But they use a spell called "animate" which turns an already dead character into a zombie. So an angel ring would not have been any use. The only way i could kill them all before they zombiefied my dead characters was to break elemental rods.

Though i then ran into a Kuzar. The damned thing uses ????. And has 4000HP. The max damage i could inflict was about two thousand and i had 2000 HP. So after i hit him, he would use ???? and kill me. I found out i could cast "Stop" on them which gave me two turns to kill them so i had to throw two elemental rods. phew

The cave where Tirasauras resides was simple enough. Ramuh Owned every monster in there :greenie:

For tirasauras i was planning a cheap pheonix down kill on him. But i stupidly sold all my pheonix downs at the last town (it's not like i could use them) And although i picked one up in a chest, i didn't want to risk it failing while he used that bone crush move he has to knock me to single digits. So i threw two fire rods at him :greenie:

The second battle with the abducter was as pathetically easy as the first.

Ive saved outside the dragon mountain. The enemies in there have alot of HP and having a bard sing requiem is the best option here. I'll see if i can make it through alive on the weekend

Cor dragon mountain wasn't pretty :greenie:

The enemies hit hard and fast and attacked in groups with 1 zombie dragon (over 4000 HP plus poisen breath) drippy (stealing all my MP) and a bird of some sort (HUGE evasion rate) Nasty combo. I prevailed with a monk and his counter and critacals plus HP+20%.

I managed to make it to Golem alive which was a simple case of using a Bard and singing requiem twice.

Dragon grass wasn't a problem either. Summoned Golem then repeatedly summoned Titan. took him out first try.

The i bumped into another set of enemies which gave me some bloody trouble. Kept turning my dead characters into zombies again. which meant using holy waters on them before hitting them to kill them again. by which time the enemy had turned them into a zombie again. They gain EXP at the end of a battle even if they are a zombie and the battle wasn't going to be won so i reset :S

OH but then came an incredabley tense battle :greenie: Gilgamesh battle three. I totally won this by shear luck :) I went in with a Theif because i hadn't learned Steal yet. And gave him the barefist command so i could attack with a Monks attack power. I spent three turns stealing from Gilgy before i stole successfully then began attacking. I was wearing Bonemail so Gilgy was only hitting for 55HP at this point and i had 1300HP. But when Enkidoh appeared and began attacking for 50HP a turn on top of Gilgys 55HP I was unsure if i would last the battle (because i couldn't use curative items thanks to Bonemail giving me "undead" status.) And then i was hit by Windslash which hit for 350HP almost garanteeing a defeat. I managed to finish Gilgy before Enkidoh could use Whitewind a second time. My health was VERY low at this point (130HP i think, but remember he has 4000HP and i couldn't heal) But to my amazement and relief, he uses Red feast, which instead of inflicting 800HP damage on me and healing him 800HP, instead healed me for 800HP and dealt 800HP damage to him instead thanks to my Bonemail :D so i had no trouble finishing him.

Am at the bottem of barrier tower where i have saved. Atamos tomorrow :( wish me luck

Whoa!!! Atamos just kicked the s*** out of me :eek:

I don't know how i'm going to beat him. When the battle starts, he immedietley starts sucking my dead characters into his mouth instead of casting comet which is what i hoped for. But it takes him about three turns to get rid of them!! He used a Slow spell while doing that. Then he starts using comet of which i survived three of. But i couldn't heal because i was wearing Bonemail.

I have a couple of things i can try. I'll update again in a few minutes.

EDIT:

He's kicked my ass three times since now. I get just two attacks before he starts to pelt me with Comet and im barely surviving one comet spell now let alone two.

I have an insane idea to beat him though. Its very likley to not work, but if it does it'll be the cheapest and cheekiest thing to ever have been done on FF ever! I have to learn a couple of quick abilities first though which is very hard as im fighting an Ultra gigas every random battle and he always uses Hurricane to knock me to single digits while one of his buddies finishes me off. So i'm winning only 50% of the random battles i fight and saving after every battle. I'll continue tomorrow

It would of been cooler if i'd have beat him with the strat i planned than what i did though! I planned to poisen him and then hide, then just wait till he died from poisen. But after four atempts i couldn't poisen him, although i have had him poisened in the past.

In the end though i made a samurai on a spur of the moment. Then i $tossed him to death :D Cheap? perhaps! but i beat him with one player and it was still hard. I got two $toss's on him before he pelted me with comet. I got another $toss before being pelted with two more comets. I was left with under 100HP and managed to finish him with my fourth $toss. A very quick battle. I also wore a wall ring i found from one of the enemies in the area. This saved me from a Demi and a Slow spell too.


EDIT: i havnt mentioned for a while what level im on. Im at level 41 just after beating atamos. I would really like to beat the entire game at no higher than level 50. But im not running from any battles so i will certainly be somewhat higher. I'm not going out of my way to level if i can help it, but i need ability points. What with only one character being able to receive them, im not learning many abilities
Ive saved, had enough exitement for one night. Theres no challenge in Shoat and the elderly tree gaurdian. But the forest and X-deaths castle are going to be seriously intense! More tomoorow

wow well done! i got pwned by Atomos with all my party members, but i also beat it with $toss! good luck with X-Deaths castle!

Not updated this in a while. Iv'e been playing FFX for the first time :greenie: so have been distracted with that in what spare time iv'e had. All ive managed to do today is clear the small dungeon where sage Gill lives. I went to the cave leading to Shoat and got killed by the Iron dresses in there before i could land a single attack. Then i went to moore forest and had a few encounters but got killed fairly quickly. To get through moore forest i'm going to need summoning level 3 and Blue which i have just learned, so hopefully i can make it through there in one piece.

For now though, just so you know how my characters are doing, heres the lowdown:

Reina:
Level 1 (starting level)
Abilities: None

Faris:
Level 3 (starting level)
Abilities: None

Galuf:
Level 20
Abilities: Summon lv2, Store

Bartz:
Level 42
Abilities: Gaurd, Chkra, Store, Flee, Sslap, Critt, Aim, Check, Tame,
Cntrl, Hide, White3, Black3, Time2, Summon3, Blue, HP+10%, HP+20%, Barefist, Cover, Counter, Learning, Secret and Dash.

Not too many decent abilities in there. Ive relied on a monks counter attacks and kick command which is why ive learned mostly monk skills. Theres also alot of useless first abilities which i learned from using a certain job class quickly for a suited task. I really want to master a hunter (a very long process) for his X-fight and a time mage up to time6, but other than that, im not aiming to learn anything specific. Maybe a white mage for Blink and Reflect, they will probabley be very useful too. Well thats all for now

Moore forest was a bitch. I used all my ethers in there and im down to just three elixers. That's because i relied on magic for all the battles. Wearing the earth robe meant Titan could kill alot of enemies in here in one shot. There are also enemies in here that resemble the blck flames from world one. They absorb fire, wind, ice and bolt and had to high an evade rate to attack physically, so i opted for Aquarake which is costly. Anyhow, i got through their in one piece.

The elderly tree gaurdian cheated :mad: I had the perfect strat for this guy but aparantley he doesn't follow the rules!
What i planned to do was simple. Cast Golem to absorb all their physical attacks. Cast Float before the battle so i was immune toEarth shaker. Wear my Coral ring so i would be protected from fire3 and absorb Aquarake. And cast Reflect to protect me from Aero3. All i had to do then was summon titan till he died. But the cheeky f***er obviously didnt like my little strat. So for this battle, Aquarake will do double damage to someone holding a flame shield (weakness, makes sense) but can't be absorbed by a Coral ring :mad:

So i switched my Coral ring for a wall ring which reflected fire3 and aero3, golem still protects from physicals and Float protected from earth shaker. But they are still very fast. Between the four of them, they would attack 6 times, so golem would last only a few turns, and Aquarake occasionally would appear twice before i could attack. They were still beating me because after they started using aquarake, i couldn't kill them before their numerous aquarake spells killed me.

Soooo i attempted to doomclaw the aquarake user. which took 8-9 tries to pull off. But when it did eventually work, a burn ray finished him off. Now so long as Golem was active, i was completley safe. So a Titan'd the other two till they died, then Blowfished the last one still he went kaplooey. Then beat up X-death with a level 20 bare class galuf with only 500 HP ^_^

And now i have to survive shoats cave and defeat shoat. Then I attempt X-deaths castle :( That place is going to own me!!!! I havn't decided how to approach it yet. It's full of dragons, so i know my newly aquired flame shield will help (protects from heat based attacks, ie blizzard and atom ray :greenie: thats gunna be a lifesaver) but i imagine the dragons hit damned hard, and like to gang up on you. Plus there are bolt attacking yellow dragons :S oooerrrr well.... i'll give it my best :)

Did you revive Galuf and kill Bartz during that last one mid-battle? If so, good idea.

nah, glauf was dead during the elderly tree battle, but started the X-death battle with full HP

I forgot to mention, while in moore forest, i was forced to run from a battle as i didn't want to trek it through to the far end all over again. Flee count: 1

I went to challenge shoat, but it was impossible to get through his cave. The druids in their cast thread on me as soon as the battle starts, and i have to endure 5 hits before i can attack. Getting hit by another thread attack isn't so bad, but it's garanteed one of them will cast encircle on me. I fled from battles while traveling through this cave. Flee count: 4 (total)

Shoat was easier than anything i have faced so far. I used a bare class with a ribbon to protect from his akumas eye. Summoned Golem to protect from his physicals, and attacked with Barefist. The battle only lasted three turns.

Then i did something damn right amazing. I challenged Gilgame... and won :D

I owe my victory to one very special relic. The elf cloak. The battle lasted a long while, which i wouldn't of hoped to survive, but the elf cloak would sometimes evade me up to five attacks in a row. And having summoned Golem too, i took very few hits. I was a black mage (coz i couldn't be bothered to learn black4) and held an ice rod while casting ice3 to inflict 4000HP a shot. I got through 5-6 potions, and an elixer from my panick Golem summoning and many ice3 spells :)

Only X-Deaths castle to go for world two :(



EDIT: X-deaths castle is near on impossible! There are enemies in their which can cast the following instant death attacks: X-zone, Blaster, Doom and break. A ribbon and Bonemail may protect me from three of the four, but i'd have to be a bare class to equip both, which means missing out on all those ability points. I also can't get by using just physical attacks, i need magic. I'm almost out of elemental rods and i have one elixer. Which means i'll never make it to the other side.

I have two options. The first is to simple run from all battles in there. This garantees i'll get through alive, but it means i won't be receiving a fully powered braveblade later in the game. Which means i will need to be around level 70 if i hope to beat Omega.

The other alternetive is to use a bare class with ribbon and bonemail eqquipped, but also i need to be able to stock up on elixers too. Is there any place where i can get elixers at this stage in the game? Usually i never use them and have at least 30 elixers at this stage. So ive never even thought if they were obtainable in world two.

Unless someone can help me with my elixer hunt, im going to have to flee from battles in here.

I'm leaving for liverpool for four days tomorrow so i'll pick this up again next week.

Nah elixers are only purchaseable in World 3 - Mirage Town...i dont know about monsters though, someone else will have to mention that

I decided to run from the battles in there anyway. I only played for five mins while i was away and defeated carbunkle. so just gilgy and x-death left for world two

That was intense!!!

OK so heres the lowdown...

First i fought Gilgamesh. Every item i equipped was essential to beating him. heres what i had:

Bare class fighter

Weapon 1: Bloodsword
Weapon 2: Flame shield

Head: Ribbon
Body: Bonemail
Relic: Elf cloak

Ability 1: Aim
Ability 2: Time2

Gilgy was WAY to fast for me and had some nasty attacks. So firstly i cast haste to beat his speed. The Bloodsword still heals you even if your wearing Bonemail so equipped with the Aim ability i could deal damage and heal in the same turn. The combined power of my flame shield and Elf cloak meant i had an insane evasion rate! I think he managed just one physical attack on me, the rest were all evaded. He would attack with all sorts of status spells including toad and mini which still worked regardless of my ribbon so i had to use items to heal from them. He also had hurricane which knocks me down to single digits which is why being faster than him was essential coz i needed to heal before he could attack again. And he also had dischord but thankfully he only used it once. So i was protected from the worst, prepared against the rest and overcame the odds by being able to attack and heal simultaneously.

X-Death straight after though. I knew he cast Condemn at the beginning of the battle so i was prepared to have to defeat him fast. I wore a wall ring in hope of scoring extra damage by having his spells reflect onto himself, and used a ninja for the throw ability and threw excalipur for 5500HP damage then followed with shurikens for 2500HP thereafter. But condemned took me out alot faster then i thought it would.

Condemned is a form of instant death, so i tried again and this time i wore Bonemail which protects from attacks like Doom. (equiped with the bloodsword and Aim again so i could heal) But condemned still took me out.

Then i thought i would use $toss again like my fast kill on Atamos. This time though i was only reaching just over 4000HP damage instead of the 5500HP i was reaching on Atamos. BUT OMG X-death didnt cast condemn at the start of the battle this time, so although i am one skint samurai now, i used the only means of doing damage i had and finished him with $toss. Was incredabley intense. And after all the that, X-death kills himself by reflecting Ice3 off my reflect :mad: i didn't even get the finishing blow :(

Abyways i have just warped into world three. Or technically world one and two. And now i need a dose of nicoteen to calm me after all that exitement :D

OMG ive beaten world one and two with a single character :eek:

I'm not too sure how hard world three will be. I think i'm definitley running from nearly all the battles. The dungeons are very long and i have just one elixer and one ether and a disgraceful 60,000 to my name. I am really REALLY worried about Minotauras and Omniscient but we'll see how i go

World three:

Antlion: Took a little while because i wasn't inflicted a very high amount of damage. I opted for the Bloodsword+Aim combo so i could attack and heal at the same time.

The pyramid: Lots of forced battles in here i couldn't run from. The whitesnakes went down to a single spell. The Mechaheads gave me trouble at first because they have a high HP, but they are weak against bolt so casting Bolt3 inflicted 5500HP. The4y survived it but holding a Bolt rod increased the damage from a Bolt3 spell to 8000HP which meant one-hit-kills for them. And the mummies went down to the same method exept i held a Fire rod to increase the power of Fire3 which they were weak to.

Mellusion was a joke. I went in there with a wall ring so she would cast Ice/fire or bolt3 and would reflect to heal her about 700HP. I then switched to the apropriote rod and cast the opposite inflicting 7000-8000HP. Quick battle.

I then went to Mirage town and bought a pair of Winged shoes which is my favoured relic. Instant initiative and constant haste2. Picked the Magus rod masamune and excalibur as my first three weapons but i have yet to use them.

The island containing the second lithograph would have been hell. But with instant iniatitive i could flee from all the battles. Exept for a few i found in chests, including a boss: Invisable which i was unprepared for. I had a ninja so threw what shurikens i had and some mithril knives.

Stalker wasn't as bad as i expected him to be. But he was still a pain. I lost so many turns attacking the wrong segment. He also used Hurricane alot which meant i used up all the elixers i had found in the pyramid and this dungeon. I used a samurai with the summon command to beat him. Summoned Golem so i wouldn't have to worry about physical damage, then attacked normally with masamune. Wasn't overly effective but got the job done.

Fork towers are next and im afraid my road could end here :( This is really gunna put my skills to the test

Minotauras was a looooong battle but it was fool proof. Wore winged shoes for haste and stood in the front row. Then used the Guard command and relied on counter attacks for damage. I was using Krile at level 20 ( i levelled Galuf to level 20 for his one on one Gilgamesh battle) I was only inflicting 200 damage a hit (two hits for a monk) and would only counter once every four or so turns. Also i wouldnt counter when he used "critical" only for his normal attack so the battle lasted a very long time. But he fell in the end.

Omniscient wasn't the challenge i thought he was going to be. I wore winged shoes again for the instant haste and initiative. I cast Image straight away then endured a fire1 spell which hit for zero damage. Then i Beserked him and used Hydra to attack. I was using a white mage and hoped i could use Holy after just aquiring it from Minotauras but i wasn't given it till after this battle. So i killed him with the very last of my MP :)

For some reason i decided to challenge bahamut next o_0 He was a HUGE disapointment. The battle went something like this...

I cant remember exactly how the next few turns went... much the same though. I used my last Holy spell and had just 18MP left so didn't know how i would hurt him (as my choice of a white mage with the summon command couldn'y do much without MP and i had no elixers) I opted to cast reflect on myself and Bahamut used Meg flare immediatley after which reflected and killed him :D killed him on my first try and it wasn't difficult in the least.

I'm still on level 45 as i havn't fought a single random battle since being in world 3. I don't plan to fight battles in the dungeons containing lithographs 3 and 4 so all i have left to worry about in world 3 is Odin, Triton neregeid and phobos and leviathan. I may go through pheonix tower too although i never need pheonix and there are no bosses as such in there. When i get to the cleft of dimension, i plan to walk by omega and come back for him after aquiring Ragnarok. I'm not sure that im really worried about any of the remaining bosses apart from Omega. Defeating him may mean alot of levelling :S

its good that your doing so well. i wish i could do challenges like this. i trie a solo monk FF1 challenge. i didnt fail but i just got bored because it was only canstant leveling up and no skill required. i could do challenges but they have to be fun and interesting instead of just repetitive and boring. good luck.

I'm exactly the same... a lot of challenges (no equipment, bare class only etc) must be very boring and repetetive. This one is very interesting as every boss or enemy fight is tackled very differently.

I'm sorry to say to everyone that i have sold my PS2. I will now only get time to progress in my challenge when i go to my GF's house in liverpool which is for just a few days every month. I still have every intention of completing this challenge and i'm close to the end so there will be updates but they won't be often.

Bolt3 sword plus X-Fight plus Two Hands might do you good for Omega. I don't know what your stats will need to be in order to make each hit 9999, though.

The damge with a fully powered brave blade and ragnarok will reach 7200HP on omega which is enough to kill him. So i COULD one-hit-kill him, but ive been a chicken concerning all battles since X-deaths castle so without a fully powered braveblade im looking at having to level up some 20 levels :S

I can hopefully pick this up in a couple of weeks... probabley won't finish it then... but hopefully not too long from then.

Bah, I always forget about Brave Blade and Chicken Knife when I play until its too late. I should be more consistent in fighting battles >_< Wait does Chicken Knife increase as you run or decrease as you fight? It may be in your interest to power up Chicken Knife if its the former.

That's an interesting point. The braveblade stops powering up once you retrieve it right? But the chicken knife still gains power from running even after you've retrieved it right? If thats right then i can power up my chicken knife supremley during the remaining dungeons.

Can anyone clarify this? and also... will the chicken knife ever reach the power of the braveblade?

i know the chicken knife can reach the power of the brave blade, i dunno about the rest

Wow i had no idea the full potential of the chicken knife!!! However i can't cast sword magic on the chicken knife and the only battle i would need it is in the battle with Omega where i need to cast Bolt3 on it. drat :mad:

But that's really helpful about the elixers. I can make alot of use out of that.... i may be able to take full advantage of the magic pots in pheonix tower. From there it will be stealing from crystal dragons... that's a garanteed elixer every battle, then i can fleeeeeee mwahaha

mime would help you better with the pots. Then you only need five elixirs with a full party of mimes.

This will finally be receiving some updates soon :) So you know i sold my PS2 and havn't been able to play it.... well i pinched my brothers PS2 so i'll be able to play till my hearts content. However my copy of FFV is in liverpool atm (me being in cambridge makes it kinda hard to play it)

Finally an update :)

Odin took a single shoat summon to kill, and nergade triton and phobos took a single odin summon to kill. That went very smoothly.

Leviathan.... was touch and go. I had a lot of luck in this battle. He seemed to rely on physical attacks most which still inflicted reasonable damage under the effects of protes, and which he would use twice in a row. My crystal shiel saved me a few times as did some perfectly timed tidal waves that healed me. However i did kill him in my first try. I had a sorcerer cast Bolt 3 on a sword because MP was low and i have no means of replenishing it. What MP i had i kept for protes and healing spells. I inflicted a very nice 4000+HP which each attack which i kept consistant so he died fairly quickly.

Now im debating whether or not to enter pheonix tower. I won't ever use pheonix so it'd just be the AP i go in for. But i don't really have the patience to find any elixers so i might just head for the cleft of dimension and start on all the fun they hide in there :)

you find 2 or 3 elixirs in the CoD if your lucky. and if you manage to get to the final floors you'll be going in normal battles against enemies that give you anywhere between 30 and 200 ABP and theyll also give you tens of thousands of gil which will buy you a lot of elixirs if you want to bribe some magic pots. but compared to the kind of ABP youll be getting in the CoD final floors i think youll want to give the pheonix tower a miss because its quite obvious that pheonix will not be needed.

Time for a BIG update!


Firstly, i was going to NEED Sshot before entering the cleft of dimension. So i learned the first few hunter levels in the basement of val castle. The i went to jacole cave and fought skull eaters in search of elixers. I gained alot of AB from them too and managed to find four elixers. Then i headed to pheonix tower and ascended high enough to bribe two magic pots (using three elixers) Even with the flee command i couldnt run from the enemies so i wasn't prepared to fight my way to the top. I headed back to val and finished mastering hunter (my only mastered job class) I also gained two levels which puts me on level 47.

Cleft of dimension:

I ran from all the battles in the ruins and forest parts and looted the place for goodies.

Woodsprite was not difficult. I used a Bare class (which is all im using against bosses now) I held masamune for first strike... but as soon as i was given control i switched for excalibur then used Sshot.

In the omega cave i fought battles. I used Leviathan to one-hit-kill the sybaratics, occulas's and grimalkins. Great dragons took either two extra physical attacks or another Leviathan summon. I did this purely to learn 2-handed which for some insane reason i havn't learned yet.

The Apprehendr would have been a lot more difficult but the right weapons and armour equipped made him easily defeated. I wore a ribbon to reduce the number of status attacks that would affect me. And (though i didn't know this before the battle) i wore Bonemail which turned his Drain attack (which he spammed) into a healing spell for me and a damaging spell to him. Windslash and physical attacks were easily healed. I just switched excalibur for the bloodsword whenever i needed to heal. Dischord and protes slowed the battle down but with Sshot it was still over fairly quickly.

Azulmagia wasn't difficult however he did kill me. After i inflicted the first 10,000HP his ???? inflicted 9999HP which instant killed me. This sent me back to my last save point forcing me to beat the apprendr again.
Initially i wore a Wall ring in this battle. When i rechallenged him i wore Winged shoes so i could inflict the damage faster, hopefully killing him before he could use ????. It worked and i did basically the same as i did for the apprendr. Sshot with 2-handed switching for the bloodswords if i needed to heal.

Catastroph was never going to be a problem. Casting Float before the battle and wearing a Wall ring kept me safe while i unleashed an onslaught of Sshot on him.

Then i charged straight for Halcyanos. I took a different approach with him. I chose a White mage in hope of being able to Beserk him then casting Blink on myself to avoid the physical attacks he was stuck using. However i couldnt Beserk him. With the Sage staff i was inflicting almost 4500HP (under the effects of shell :/ ) so i pressed on. Victory looked certain until he hit me with Holy which hit me for 6000HP.
I returned and pelted him with Sshot while weilding Excalibur and he died before he could use another Holy spell.

I was looking forward to Twin tania but the fatty disapointed. I did the usual... Held masamune for initiative, switched for Excalibur (in two hands) and used Sshot which inflicted massive damage. He only lasted a few turns.

I then headed back to Sshot alta roit and jura avis. They took 3 Sshots each and only two of them managed an attack (a windslash and a mealstrom)

Gilgamesh took two Sshots before he fled and i headed for Necrophobe.

I was seriously seriously worried about this. I wouldn't hardly survive one Flare or Holy so i especially wasn't going to survive four in a row from his barriers. I equipped a time mage with Summon5 and cast Quick followed by two bahamuts. Then i could attack again while he batted on about him being invincible with his barriers. Another Bahamut cleared his barriers. I threw Fire rods at him to finish him which all hit for 6000HP each. Gilgamesh showed and finished him.




There was a lack of challenge there. Halcyanos and Azulmagia both killed me but it was a simple case of "ok i know that now, won't fall for it again" and i beat them the second time. I know X-death will take me several tries as i remember a certain ammount of luck involved in my last one-on-one with him. Omega will require levelling, and shinryu shouldn't be a problem.

Now i have to master a few jobs/learn some abilities. I'm going to need sorcerer4, time6, white6 (i think) and a mastered ninja. Then it's time for the Final bosses in my challenge

That was intense. Ive been fighting shinryu all day and losing quite badly. Ive tried strategy after strategy and though some seemed hopeful, they didn't cut it against the god of dragon.... until the last one that is. Funny thing though coz i tried this strategy first and it failed.

I said i'd beaten him before today with just a single player but this was different. He just seemed impossible this time round and i can't even work out how i pulled it off the last time.

Anyway i'll tell you how i beat him the first time, then some strategies i tried (which were brilliant) and then i'll tell you how i beat him.


The first time i beat him (which was a few days before i began this challenge many moons ago) I don't remember exactly what i had equipped or how i was set up however i do remember roughly the strategy. I entered battle with masamune and strato and used Sshot for the initial strike. After tidal wave i used Sshot again. After being hit it was a simple case of changing my weapons for two bloodswords so i could keep up the onslaught of attacks without stopping to heal. I was level 51 and i beat him after a longish battle.

This time im level 49 and shinryus speed is just crazy compared to how it was in the last battle.

After a couple of test runs i decided the battle couldn't be won without two things... Haste and Blink. A physical attack is enough to kill me depending whether im standing in the front row or not and shinny was letting out those physicals like there was no tomorrow (twice in a row not uncommen.)

However having time magic and white magic as abilities just to keep me alive left no room for attacking. (him absorbing Holy and Meteo having next to no effect on most occasions) So i looked at the only job ability which could provide both forms of support magic. MIX! Thank you to Game faqs for the mix chart.

With mix i could mix two items together for haste as well as creating attacks like dragon armour and dragon power to raise my defence and levels. I got a kick in the teeth though when i tried to find the items i needed to make these attacks. I had plenty of dragon fangs and dark matters.... what i needed was turtle shells and i looked everywhere for them in world three. I gave up looking for them but i stuck with using the idea of MIX.
I had one turtle shell which was enough to cast haste, then cast resist bolt (which let me absorb his thunder attack, also his atom ray is nulled by my coral ring) I stayed safely in the back row and cast giant drink, dragon armour and dragon power. This was aided by Quick time magic so i could fire out all this protection as fast as i could. But his physicals were too much (i actually lost by level 3 flare on one attempt from casting dragon power :/)
I put MIX with Sshot and bloodswords for faster damage and easy healing but that failed too.
Then i used a Mime with MIX, white6 and Time6. Cast quick then haste, then Blink, shell, protes, giant drink, resist bolt, dragon armour and dragon power. Which was made very easy because shinryu failed with evil eye, mealstrom and roullette while i set this up. Re-cast Blink and i looked all set :D until i realized i couldn't hurt the bastard. Dark flare hit for just under 3000 but i could only cast it twice. Then it was a simple case of me not having the item command and no items that can be mixed to make MP restorative items. No MP lead to death.

There were a couple of crazy attempts where i thought winged shoes would be more beneficial than coral rings (and me using Jump to avoid his tidal wave) but that attempt was over quicker than any other.

SO here it is. The spur of the moment strat which has served me in the past and never fails (exept that first time i tried it)

Bare handed fighter with Sshot and time magic. Entered battle with masamune and rune axe so i had priority over tidal wave. I cast quick then haste then fired away with my first Sshot. Masamune hit for 1000HP and 2200-2500HP with a critical. Rune axe varied but never went below 1000HP and ventured as high as 3000HP. Tidal wave healed as it does when one is equipped with a coral ring. I then cast Quick and hit away with two more Sshots. Shinny tried a level 3 flare and mealstrom and i cast quick and two final Sshots to finish him.

I guess hitting hard and fast works better than a well thought out strategy :D


Just so you know where i am at and how things are looking....

In the cleft of dimension i mastered a thief (no idea why :s) i mastered a ninja (for the auto 2-swords on a bare class fighter) learned time6, white6, sword6, jump lance, mix and maybe one or two others that i cant remember. I fought a few Movers (though mostly i was unable to kill them before they delta'd me to stone) Movers left enough money to buy three elixers so i ventured out and bought 10 with some cash to spare. Im not sure i'll need them after all but it doesn't hurt to have them. Ive been killing enemies in the X-zone by abusing the summon command and magic lamp (behemoths and maximus's are easily vebgesworded though there have been incidants where the behemoths counter javelin with meteo and kill me. necromancers are weak to leviathan and bahamut kills the crystelles and mind flares)

Omega is next and im much less worried about him then i have been. Of course the only way to beat him with a single character is to one-hit-K.O him as there is no way a single target can survive all his counters. This may require me to level up... or use dragon power. If i level up i will be disatisfied as i'd like to finish the challenge on below level 50... and if i use dragon power then i can't use either Sword! or Sshot as a bare cant have three abilities and a mime can't equip swords so Eqsword would need it's third ability slot. Anyway i think ragnarok and braveblade with bolt3 cast on them and Sshot will be enough. If the worst should happen tho i will gladly take suggestions :s

I went to get my braveblade and the attack power was pathetic... guess i'm a coward.

So i attacked omega wielding excalibur and ragnarok. I wore a reflect ring coz the first time i tried i was hit by atom ray and the second i was hit by delta. Then i held masamune for initiative and switched back to excalibur as soon as the battle started. Bolt on two swords and Sshot of course. But i could only hit for 46-47000HP. I tried a few times coz the damage varied but i couldn't hit for above 47000HP.

I went back for the chicken knife cause it was my last hope. I needed to cast sword magic on it which i didn't think you could. well... it turns out you can :D

Same strat as before but this time... check out the damage

My chicken knife was hitting for a perfect 9652HP every hit. That's a combined total of 62,248HP after all 8 shots.

I mastered a monk before because my Bare class HP increased by 1000. Before i mastered Monk my Bare had 2500HP and after i mastered it it increased to 3500HP.

Whiteball failed when X-death tried. A holy and physical attack were the only other attacks he used. I had initiative from winged shoes and used two holy spells immediatley. I got in another two before he could attack. Then i kept firing out Holy spells until he died and neo X-death came out to play.

This battle seemed to go rather well. He used Grandcross three times throughout the course of the battle and i didn't receive a single status problem. I used redx2 to cast shell and blink which meant i could survive two flares/holys and three physicals. He cast dispel numerous times but a redx2 quickly put back up my defence. All i did really was either cast two holy spells, a holy and cure3 if i needed to heal, shell and blink if hit by dispel, and an elixer to restore MP which i used three of throughout the battle. I concentrated Holys on segment one till that died then segment 2 till that died. Then cast one holy on each of the remainding segments so that one died just before the other which i killed immediatley after. I'd pretty much sussed this battle already so i knew it wouldn't be too difficult. I beat him on my first try.


So there it is. FFV can be beaten with the use of just one character (or two if you include glaufs one-on-one with gilgamesh and kriles one on one with minotauras) Not only that, but my final level was 49! That is so much better then i thought. I was expecting to finish on level 70 or over.

Ive had a pretty [img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img]ty night and an even worse day today so i don't much feel like celebrating. But i hope people enjoyed following my challenge and maybe inspire them to do one too.

Thank you to everyone who offered help when i needed it. Maybe i'll try another challenge in the future... or maybe the same challenge on a different final fantasy who knows.
