Did anyone not like FF1?

Well, i did. I know i got flamed a bit on another Final Fantasy forum 'cause i said that, but i really didn't like it. Just because it has this huge lack of story and characters. I don't care about graphics, since i liked FF3, FF4 and FF6 a lot. The battles were certainly okay, but then, that was it. That was the feeling i got: just randomly going to places, finding stuff, battling monsters. Only when you finish the entire game, then you "know" something about the whole plot with Garland and all.:mad:

I haven't really played it since I bought it on PS1 & that was ages ago.
I'm thinking of playing it though.

I loved it. It was the first final fantasy I played, so when I played it there wasn't the godly standard of quality of current FFs to hold it up to.

If you played FF1 and expected it to have a better story, better charicters, better dialog or pretty much better anything than lets say FF7....DUH!

I didn't expect much of it, since it's the very first Final Fantasy:p DUH

I thought it was very enjoyable, despite the lack of story

I love it. I guess you have to enjoy dungeon crawls to really get into it though.

You do need to remember that FFI was made back in 1987, not to mention this was a last-ditch effort to save Square from bankruptcy. So you really can't expect the first, especially made that long ago, to have well-developed plot lines.

So in 1987, the gameplay was more important than the storyline and characters? :-\

seems as its the first FF the battle system isnt as good as others but its still got a good battle system its just not a great battle system. the storyline isnt anything fancy like in the later ones like FF4,8 or 9 e.c.t. but garland is a good enemy and the time loop is quite interesting. i think that the storyline and characters are more important than the gameplay (although i do like good fun gameplay.). FF1 was a good game but you wouldnt expect it to be the best because its the first.

It's interesting from a historical perspective, but I wouldn't call it a particularly fun game. FFIII is a hundred times better in all aspects.

Then maybe you should consider reading books instead of playing video games. They tend to have much better stories and character development, and you don't have to worry as much about engrish or incorrect translations. There's also no level grinding, dungeon crawling, or bad controls to hamper the fun.

More like story wasn't really a big a deal. RPGs and such were only enjoyed by a select crowd, not like how they seem to be more popular today, I would think. What I mean is, since video games weren't taken seriously as a form of entertainment, it didn't really matter if it had a storyline as detailed as some novel. Or something. :P That's what I'd think, anyway. Although I'd say FFI had a story better than most games of the time, although I think that FFIII is indeed a much better game, although they follow the same formula. :cat:

and i do read a lot of books but the later FFs with brilliant storylines are just like playing a realy good and interesting book. FF is nearly the only game i play because unlike most games it actually has a good storyline. i like the gameplay and its good for the gameplay to actually be well designed and fun but you need both of them to make a realy good game but storyline is still a bit more important.

And, storyline wasn't really an issue back then, since games weren't considered a form of entertainment or story, they were games. :cat: In other words, what I just said.

I like FFI a lot being the very first FF to be released, its a generally good game.:D

Tell that to Alexey Pazhitnov, Shigeru Miyamoto, David Theurer, Toshihiro Nishikado, Iwatani Toru, Eugene Jarvis, Dona Bailey, Warren Robinett, David Crane, and Ralph Baer.

FF1 is great because of its classic, uncomplicated storyline. You're just a bunch of anonymous, storyless legendary heroes rescuing the princess and saving the world from evil with your mystic orbs. I don't recall a game in FF1's era having any more of a storyline than that anyway apart from some other RPGs but they didn't get as far as FF did.

The ones that did were entirely text based and the character development back then was nonexistant. You always started out as someone strong and fighterly (or magely) to begin with so there was no flaw to overcome, and therefore no real room to develop. :/

At least it's better than Dragon Quest.

I do occasionally play Final Fantasy I, but certainly not for it's story or the characters. I play it because I think it's fun to complete with different teams each time! That's the main reason why I play it.

I thought it was pretty GHETTO until you got the airship - Then things REALLY took off. And it was fun, Pretty good for being the FIRST game. It's just SIMPLE fun, Plain SIMPLE fun, and the story was cool when it all comes together at the end. Get the crystals, kill bad guy. Fun! :)

The only problem Is the lack of direction and the ammout of random battles.
The rest of It Is OK for a game made In 87.

Dungeon crawls are fun. I <3 Dungeon Siege and it had a really bad storyline, but was mostly battling.

FFII is better for dungeons IMO though.

And III is better for everything.

Then again, you could just play the best FF ever (IV) :).

FFI is cool. It's really simple, but fun at the same time. It's no FFVI but it's still fun. I personally miss the days where games were like this and weren't so...you know, FFVII-like (you know, where everything is really stylized and overblown and ridiculous, and everyone has some sort of crazy anime hair etc.).

I thought it was alright. It was fun, addictive, and the difficulty was just right. Although I was a little dissapointed in the ending, but what do you expect.

Seriously though, I didn't play FF in 1987 (wasn't born for another year actually), but I did play it before all these remakes came out. The original is 10x better than the remakes. The graphics just fit it better. You kind of expect it to be something more when it's all dolled up with Origins/DoS graphics and such.

Who says it doesn't have story? There's plenty of story. You save the world AND the princess AND the prince! Garland, the four fiends, Astos, etc, are awesome enemies, and have plenty of story for my tastes. Just cause there isn't some traitor and a corny love story doesn't make it story-less. Learn2read the dialog boxes maybe?

Once again though, the story and enemies and stuff really do simply fit better in the original game and graphic setting. Thinking of DoS/Origins really makes me wish they'd included the original as a bonus on those games.

Although how can you really say it doesn't have story until the end? The end is confusing as heck. @.@ I didn't understand what it meant at all the first time I read it.

I quite liked it. I wasn't into games when it originally came out, but I played the GBA remake and thought it was good fun. Much worse than the newer games though.

My first play-thru happened when I was a small, naive child. I had never played an RPG before, and getting attacked randomly was something else entirely...

However, as both my six year old self and my present 18 year self, I enjoyed/enjoy playing it through. The only difference now is that I now know WHY I am getting attacked, and that it no longer takes me a year to beat the thing...
