It's like when you're working at some job, and you're generally unknown. During your time off the job you're doing some things that start reeling in some genuine fame. The fame swells and you become so recognized you get to a point where you no longer need to be supported by the job; you're living your dream, and you can leave your old job in the past.

I wouldn't say it's a demotion, I'd say it's him stepping down. Demotion sounds like we told him he'd be demoted. Stepping down means he chose to do it.
Site Staff have more benefits than Recognized Members, though, so it is technically a 'downgrade' of usergroups. He's done great work for EoFF's website and maybe someday he'll get really, really bored and come back and do more!

It is hardly a demotion or a step down, as he does not work as Site Staff. He is now more of a normal member without responsibilities regarding the front site, but he has a spiffy yellow title to boot. It is retirement, folks! Let him enjoy it!

How exactly do you become a recognized member?
Put time and effort into doing something for the community - eg. running events/competitions, helping with setting up or maintaining a feature for the community, etc.
