Halo Series
Final Fantasy VII
Halo 2, most definitely. Anywhere I went, offline, online, people would be talking about how awesome it is.
Halo 2 definately, But I love Halo.
Xenogears is the most overrated game I can think of amongst people who's taste in games is usually pretty decent. God only knows what possess people to call this the 'greatest cRPG'.
I would agree with Xenogears. It's really annoying, now. I think it's a great game, but I was pretty disappointed when I started playing it cause of all the hype. It isn't THAT smurfing good. I think the dialogue can be absolutely atrocious, and some of the characters...ugh.
And what I don't get about it is that people are always saying it's so underrated, and overlooked. But I'm constantly hearing about people going on and on and on about it. Blegh.
I mean, I don't know about most overrated, but it's definitely up there.
Final Fantasy VII. I fail to see the appeal in the game, or the spinoffs. I didn't like the music, and every single charactor annoyed me. The story was mediocre at best, though I suppose it was somewhat of a breakthrough as far as what a game could do length-wise. It was an all-around unenjoyable experience that I don't care to subject myself to again.
Kingdom Hearts. I've only played the first one, and while it was fun as hell, I don't think it lives up to the hooplah. The worlds were so limited, the story didn't much interest me... meh, meh, and more meh. The second looks more promising in terms of plot, so maybe I'll pick it up.
Halo series. 1st one was alright 2nd is crap.
Oh and GTA: Vice City
Halo is the most overrated game ever created.
Halo series
Final Fantasy VII
Grand Theft Auto series
Grand Theft Auto
Mortal Kombat
Half Life 2
I see alot of people saying Halo, you know, I thought it wasnt that bad :/
Pretty much any MMORPG ever.
Chrono Trigger. Its hard to find people that actually criticize the game
Halo 1/2
FF8 - Honestly, there were 6 characters, lame villian, poor weapon system, too much reliance on GFs and a stupid storyline. (theyre all in the same orphanage? oh Pl.ea.se)
Gta isnt overated at all.
Grand Theft Auto
Final Fantasy
Halo
Tekken
Soul Calibur
Zelda: Ocerena of Time
Gta isnt overated at all.
That's denial if I ever seen it.
I never said Halo was better than Half Life 2, but I didnt get what everyone else got from Half Life 2, the first game was brilliant, but the second was only decent, no where near on-par with the original.
And Halo is a good series, Ive only played the first, and I enjoyed it alot. I havent played the second though....
Halo, and maybe just a dash of GTA. Add some FFXI, and you've got a pretty overrated cake.
FFVII. It's a good game, but not worthy of all the praise that has been heaped upon it over the years. Since it was the first RPG to really hit it big in the West, a lot of people have an emotional attachment to the game, and are willing to overlook its faults. Were it released today, few would hail it as the greatest game ever, or even the greatest Final Fantasy title.
Ahh, I understand now. Its not as good as the first Halo in my opinion. Still worth a play though. Its cool that you can play as the Covernant, but they get really anoying after a while.
Also to add to the list.
Diablo 1
Baldurs gate.
(Yea sure there both great games, but better than Neverwinter Nights...? That is what many people have said to me. Ha, yea, whatever.)
Rainbow Six 3
TimeSplitters 2.
(Better than Half Life and Gunman Chronicles put together one person said to me. Naaah. But then again, thats my opinion.)
Half-life 1 (2 was awesome, although still beset my major shortcomings. 1 was... what the hell is the fuss about?)
Zelda games (Especially OoT)
Final Fantasy IX. It's pretty great. It's not nearly as good as IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, X, X-2, or XI. Certainly not good enough to be a Final Fantasy game.
I don't think Halo is overrated, for two reasons. First, it's not a big, clever insight to say it's repetitive. All videogames are repetitive, and FPS games can be especially so. Second, whilst lacking any specific innovation, Halo is so widely beloved because it is, quite honestly, the best example of the genre in existence. Halo 2 slightly less so - mainly because it was clearly released a month or two before it should have been - but the original was mindblowing, and it was the example of why the next-gen was worth looking into.
Oh, and given how many people are deriding it, can you really say it's overrated? I've never seen as many people criticise a single game as people do with Halo.
Possibly true, but that argument is flawed. You can't reasonably compare games released when computing power, maturity in the industry and its experiences/innovations/etc, social trends, and a myriad of other things, are all so different to each other. It was precisely because FFVII was something new and amazing to us that it was so lauded in the West and remains to this day one of the most important cRPGs (And possibly even games in general) ever made. It was a game which truly wanted to be an artistic example, rather than something just to have fun with (And I would contend it resolutely succeeded), and whilst this had occurred before in other games it was something special for us. So yes, there is the nostalgic/emotional element, but you also have to look at the context the game was released in.Quote:

Final Fantasy VII, definitely.
Halo get's way too much love.
I'd say Resident Evil 4, but I haven't played it enough to really decide for sure.
I like Final Fantasy IX, really. It was better than a lot of Final Fantasy games.
Chrono Trigger hasn't aged well at all.
Kingdom Hearts. The camera made me hate the game. I just can't forgive it.
roto, trust me, when you beat RE4 you'll know it lives up to the hype. It might be one of my favorite PS2 games, and my favorite GC games.
Anyway. KH2 was not close to the first as far as gameplay goes since all it is is complete button mashing for hours. There is no movement or strategy at all. I never even died or used any magic. Id say id give it a 4/10 since they had it down the first time, and they went and made it bad. I didnt think that the camera was all that bad in KH1, i didnt really like that you had to use L1 and R1 though.
FF8 was definatly overrated.I thought it was horrible.
Really dreddz? I thought Resident Evil4 got the ratings it deserved. It only had a few things wrong with it.
I actually change my statement, I think Halo is just fine rated. It's definetly not overrated due to the fact that people who never played it hate it as some kind of fad or something.
GTA is probably the most overrated game in existance. People only love it because it's advertised in every page of every magazine but in reality its not really that fun. Put enough of advertisement for something and people will buy it and like it just because of that.
GTA III was the best in the series. Now they just take that game, make the guy look different, and you can go into buildings. It was fun the first time. Not three times more.
Its not just about ratings, people go on and on how great this game is, and how is saved Resident Evil. Its a good game, dont get me wrong, but people go on to say that its a next-gen game now. If RE4 is a next-gen game, then MGS must of been some doing this next-gen thing years ago.
And whilst people were happy with the change of gameplay, I wasnt. Im a RE traditionalist, and would of prefered a RE experience instead of gameplay that could easily of been placed in another non-RE game.
kingdom hearts one
I normally don't hop on the overrated wagon because I don't hype myself up for any game, no matter how many people swear it changed their life and made them complete. But Vagrant Story is one I was disappointed in... It's not really a huge 'hit' so I'm not sure it can qualify as overrated... But almost all who played it swear it's the greatest Square game and game critics all around gave it the highest scores. I was bored playing it, switching weapons constantly... I can't switch weapons...anymore...urgh.
While I really enjoyed Xenogears, there are definitely aspects like this that were overrated. I can only find the willpower to play through the game twice because the translation is horrible and the dungeon design just makes me want to throw down the controller and take a nap. I got to the Nortune sewers on my second time and almost quit altogether. And I'm a person who plays through games lots and lots. Xenogears is certainly not the best Ps1 RPG in existence like many claim. I'm one of the few people that would ever say Xenosaga (despite its own flaws) is a better project from that team :greenie:
So many are listing FFVII :O_O: Poor VII, a lot dislike you these days. I still love you Cloud and company
That's the dumbest thing I've read since Cloud No.9 was banned. Advertisement sells games, it doesn't make them good. If it did, I'd love Zelda, Metroid, and a whole smurfton of other Nintendo games.
The reason people love GTA is because it's a well-made series, with interesting and enjoyable plots, exceptional music and general atmosphere, it's absolutely smurfing hilarious, and there's few things more fun to do than go on a rampage and kill a bunch of people.
Halo was tripe.
I can't understand why the your battle armour, which is advanced enough to withstand tens of bullets and then recharge itself to full power again, can be instantly defeated with a simple blow to the head.
The context of the game's release is exactly why it's an overrated title. Because it was a new experience to Western gamers, FFVII was hailed as something spectacular, when in fact it was little more than a good RPG that happened to be in the right place in the right time. The game was undoubtedly one of the most significant ever made, but significance doesn't equal greatness in my book.Quote:

Halo, Halo 2, Runescape, Final Fantasy X, and Ocarina of Time.
I loooooove FFVII, but I do admit it is a tad overrated  And Xenogears too.
I dont play GTA just for the sake of protecting my IQ...
Breath of Fire 3 - was good for the first half, then completely lost itself into boredom, 4 was way better
I agree with Halo, Master Chief couldn't be more lame, and the gameplay gets old fast
Katamari Damacy - Seriously what the hell is fun about rolling around collecting things with a sticky ball.
I don't get why people hate FF7, FF8, and Xenogears, everyones entitled to their opinion, but those three are the penultimate rpg's for me
I think that FFVII is overated. But dont get me wrong its a good game but i think it gets way too much hype
Final Fantasy 10 is overated.
Tekken. I just don't see what the fuss is about. I liked Tekken and Tekken 3 a lot at the time, but then Soul Calibur came along...
For some reason people often seem to assume GTA fans are idiots. Yes its violent, and yes a lot of the humour is very basic, but if you actually ignore that and play it, its a damned impressive series. The sheer amount of things possible in San Andreas is just ridiculous. Get bored of the story? Drive around, race, do stunts, fly a plane, sky-dive, dance, sneak into houses and steal things, buy houses, get some clothes, take over territories, fly a jetpack, go to a casino, have dogfights with planes, look for hidden things, base jump, go swimming, build up your character... the list could go on for a LONG time...
Almost all of those things are executed pretty damn well. Whether to individual taste or not, the games are very well made.
Well said.
Halo series, hate those games, i bought a xbox just for those games, biggest waste of my money ever.
GTA is pretty overrated even though they are good games, people just gone on about them too much
GTA is overrated but it is quite innovative, with the massive free roam maps and all the different things you can do.
FFVII takes the overrated cake in my books.
God of War, and Grand Theft Auto.
Also, I think Soul Calibur is the most overrated fighting game series of all time. It's mainly popular because it's... retardedly easy to play. A blind, dumbstruck, chimpanzee with one hand and a brokeN thumb can play that game and win.
What I don't get is that if GTA is overrated, and is a woefully terrible game, then why is Joel so utterly obsessed with it?
Splinter Cell.
By the end of the game, I never used GFs. Actually, I don't think I used them any time after the part where you fight the Aliens on the Ragnarok.
I'll go with...Street Fighters. All of them.
And any GTA is awesome. I remember GTA 1. That game was hilariously stupid.
FFVIII.
Both Halos and all GTAs.
Wind Waker.
Hmmm Splinter Cell? I don't remeber much buzz for that game. I enjoyed it, but it could get boring at times.
You're probably just not good at them. :PQuote:

I would have to say the John Madden games. One game a year with minor changes.
Dragon Quest VIII- It was a charming and good game, but it's not really as great as people make it out to be. I'm a HUGE fan of RPGs and I couldn't play DQVIII for long because it was a big bore most of the time.
Vagrant Story- It was an EXTREMELY boring game despite people's claim of it being a great game.
Shadow of the Colossus- I can see how SotC could be a good game, but after you figure out how to kill a Colossus, the game becomes way too boring.
Valkyrie Profile- Even though it's among my favorite RPGs, VP does not live up to its hype. As unique as it was, it wasn't very exciting and it was more of a chore to play the game than it was fun.
Xenogears- I actually hate Xenogears. A lot. It wasn't fun, exploration was limited to a minimum, AND the storyline wasn't as great as the hype made it out to be.
FFVI- Possibly THE most overrated game that I know of. When I first played FFVI, I expected it to be really awe inspiring and breathtaking. Three hours into the game, I was bored out of my mind. The only reason I completed it was because it was an RPG and I never leave an RPG incompleted. Normally, you expect a game to build up more towards the end of the game, but in FFVI's case, the game got more and more boring as you progressed through it.
Surprisingly, as overrated as all those games are, all of them have pretty good soundtracks (except VS IMO), so that's a plus. :D
This baffles me. Each Colossus was a puzzle unlike the previous, and once you solved it, um, you pretty much kill it and move on to the next puzzle. Not to mention the game isn't much more than eight hours long, which doesn't leave much room to be "bored." Did you just get lost a lot or what?
Final Fantasy VII.
Once you find a Colossus' weak point, you're pretty much done with it (save for the few who weak points move around). The game had absolutely no replayability because once you figured out how to defeat each Colossus, the game would only last for about 2 to 3 hours on subsequent playthroughs.
Somebody thinks Vagrant Story is overrated? Man whatever you're taking to get high please tell me where I can get some of it.
I know, but if I take the harder ones that make me think Vagrant Story is overrated I might see colours I never knew existed.
The Halo series is pretty overrated. Not that it's bad - I've actually found myself quite enjoying playing the first one - but the fanboys seem to joygasm at every bit of news coming out about it. I mean, it's good, but it's not THAT good. Totally overrated.
Yeah, Halo is overrated is hell, but alot fo times overrated doesn't mean bad. I mean Zelda's a tad bit overrated but those games are great.
I'd just like to add that you're not playing the game right (Well, Thorn at least. I'm not quite sure what Shout means by "cracked"). You don't have to rely on GF's at all. I'm playing FFVIII right now and I can't remember the last time I summoned a GF. The only way you have to rely on GF's is that you have to equip them and set that little finger on an ability you want. Other than that you just need to learn how to junction properly and you should be fine.
Mario Kart
Well, you'd be hard pressed to find a better kart racer.
FFVII. I love this game, but it's not my favorite.
Final Fantasy in general (VII and VI mostly, though)
Halo 2
All GTAs
I'm going to have to reiterate and add to my earlier comments.
With so many people saying Halo, GTA, and FFN are overrated, it starts to become facile. When enough people start saying that, the game obviously stops being overrated.
Oh...you know, that one game? That game, that people like? Yeah, that game. It's overrated. :cat:
So you're saying, you are conciously making a statement along the following lines:
"I have no experience with X, but I can more accurately appraise the quality of X than people who have experience with it."
FF7 is a popular game and gets all of the credit it deserves and is not overrated. i would say any FF's are overrated. im not sure what the most overrated game is.
I loved both halo's, don't know what you kids are talking about
Anyways, I think Black and white was overrated
black and white again :P lol that game sucked..
anyone who says fable was overrated needs a slap <_<
slap me please....it was interesting for an hour or two and looked good, good voice acting, but the gameplay fell short of my high expectations
I would have to agree that the Halo series is overrated.
The reason Halo is so popular is because of two things: the mammoth marketing machine that is Microsoft telling us how great it is, and it was the first FPS on a console that played well.
Halo was a good game, but that's it. I was just good. If you compare the game to all the FPS's that have ever been made, then it just doesn't stack up. Far Cry, HL, No One Lives Forever, Jedi Knight, Max Payne, Undying, to name a few, were easily as good as or better than Halo, in terms of both story and gameplay. Wanna throw multiplayer in the mix and UT completely blows Halo 2 out of the water. The only distinction that Halo has over all the titles I've listed is that is was a console only game. So all the gamers out there that didn't have any 'good' FPS's for their consoles got Halo and Halo 2 and assumed that it was the only FPS that is good and nothing else could compare to it.
And of course, I must address the repetative gameplay, particularly in Halo. And by repetative I mean by stacking floor upon floor upon floor that look identical. It looked like the developers said, 'Hey our game is too short, just cut and paste that section you did earlier and slap it on top, or next to or whatever you need to do to add a couple more hours.' In Halo, the Library was the worst offender of this type as well as 343 Guilty Spark. This type of design wasn't quite so bad in Halo 2 but it was still present in some of the later levels.
I also got a kick out of one of my friends when he was talking up all the features of Halo 2 and how innovative they were, for example the dual wielding of weapons. I thought to myself, that's nothing new, games as far back as Blood and Shadow Warrior let you use guns akimbo and Heavy Metal: FAKK2 let you hold two weapons and control them independantly.
Anyway, to summarize: Halo was good, Halo 2 was better. But neither game did anything that anyone else hadn't done before, unless you limit your view to consoles.
yeah it kinda sucks at the beginning.. but so do most final fantasy games lmao look at final fantasy 8 el oh el and the whole of final fantasy 9 xD i slay ff9 :P
fable is immense towards the end so much to do.. i found a brothel on my 2nd time through game.. dug up the deeds, 'smurfed' :P all the people there then made it into a refuge lol.. and the humour is amazing.. an excellently crafted game is fable
I hated fable, what a horrible game. Probably the worst story ever.
And, you know, getting one of the only 10/10 scores in Edge magazine's history. That might have helped. (For those not in the UK, a 10/10 in Edge is as prestigious as a 40/40 from Famitsu.)
Halo is betterQuote:

Halo has a much better story than most games in general, to be honest.Quote:

Yeah that's called being an FPS. Oh, and I'll tell the Forerunners to vary their architecture in case someone hundreds of thousands of years later gets bored.Quote:

Originality isn't necessarily the criteria for good. Good is the criteria, actually. Halo didn't do anything particularly new, it just did absolutely everything extremely smurfing well. It doesn't need a hundred different types of enemies and ten setting changes per level because it does what it does incredibly well. Same way Dynasty Warriors is incredibly repetetive, and incredibly fun. The pure gameplay is the best the genre has seen, and that's why Halo is so loved. That's why there were something like 50 people waiting outside GAME for the midnight release of Halo 2 where I live.Quote:
Anyway, to summarize: Halo was good, Halo 2 was better. But neither game did anything that anyone else hadn't done before, unless you limit your view to consoles.
And yes, maybe it gets bonus points for doing all that on a console. Why shouldn't that demographic applaud it?
fable...ah well, i didn't enjoy it. it promised that your character would change with the choices you made. it did that. i was thinking it would be like KOTOR but with more choices. instead it was like morrowind with less choices, and so falls somewhere inbetween those two in terms of how much i liked it.
Halo 2 multiplayer is cheap. Whenever my friend lets me play on his name in a sniper game, there are just people aiming at spawn points. I didnt even get to play, I was dead the whole time. Take a hint, ad some friggin spawn protection. Plus the community sucks, everyone ive played with thinks that they are the best and are the team captain and make me their little guinea bitch. And if I die, its my fault we lost and such. Thats why the multiplayer blows.
I am just fine at fps's and I can even beat all of my friends, plus, I thinks its only reasonable that I live for 3 seconds.
So it's really Halo's small health and two hit kills?
Well if you've played the game on the versus mode you'd know it really is around two hits from a freakin launcher that blows a 'super-sophisticated suit that can repair itself from any kind of damage.'
Such a predictable thread, seriously.
Okay, I'll be the joker of the thread and say halo.
[...................]
OH SNAP, IT'S ALREADY BEEN DONE COUNTLESS TIMES.
Ahem, most of the fifa series.
Final Fantasy (series): Not that it's bad by any means, but it's not THE rpg series, and in fact others do some things better. Western RPGs let you choose whether you want to be nice or be an ass, Suikoden gives you several types of combat (Duels and Wars in addition to regular battles), DW (7&8) and probably several other rpgs pwn FF in the exploration and puzzle depts. What FF does, it does well, but as a series (esp of late) it isn't even the best series out there anymore.
Chrono Cross: The combat in CC is horrible. You get to attack, but you have to choose your level of attack. What this really means is you can do a weak ass attack every turn or do a strong attack and then sit there with your pants down for the next three turns. Magic is even worse, other than one magic spell, you can only cast each one 1 time. That truely stinks when you have to defeat a boss using magic.
Something like this:
Chrono: Casts explosion
999 Damage
Chrono: *trys to cast explosion again*
Gamer: Hey what gives *dies*
FFT: Well, as I call it FF:Hit the reset button. Half of the time I'd lose a level 20 character I'd spent a month on in a random combat zone, so I'd have to reset, reload the game, and try to level up my characters again.
And what one bad review said is true -- it isn't really strategic, most battles follow the same path: surround one enemy, kill it, and surround the next enemy. You only have 5 characters at a time, and for most battles, there were classes that were impossible to level up (BM,WM, Summoner, and TM being the worst). Sometimes it took 3-4 turns to get mr. Mage to cast a level one spell. That was somewhat easy to get around. Just have the mage be a Chemist throwing potions on everybody. But it seems that I ought to be able to do some combat with a black mage.
MMORPGs in general are overrated as well. Most of them restrict you to a very small area in the early going (I think LVL 10 to leave the starting area is pretty common), which negates exploring. The "quests" are mostly fetch quests or escort quests. And for most quests, it's a heck of a lot easier to pay $500gil for the item than to try to find the one monster with the item, wait for it to spawn, and pray to every god you know that some level 300 jackass doesn't kill it before you even get a chance to -- because in some games it can take 15-30 minutes before the monster respawns. Add to that the absurd amount of time you need to spend online (you have to stay at a similar level to your party, after all), and MMOs seem more like work than play.
Some people think that final fantasy x was the best in the series, of course they r all on drugs. The only good thing about that game was the graphical leap and the control of the aeons, that was sweet. The hero acts like a little b*tch and looks like a girl, ff10 would have to be the most overrated game next to the halo franchise and elder scrolls oblivion
Elder Scrolls Oblivion, overrated *Sharpens Steel Katana*
Enguard! Before we start a small warning I'm a Journeymen Swordsman!
50 Cent - Bulletproof :rolleyes2
(Not that i bought that crap though.)
I'd say GTA: San Andreas, FF7 and FFX. Too much hype and going on about them like their the dogs b******s. they may be to some, but they arent that great to me.
Halo Series, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario Kart DS.
Resident Evil 4 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
I don't even think Final Fantasy VII can be considered overrated anymore, it seems to get more hate that love these days...
I just started playing RE4 that my friend let me borrow (along with his GC) and man do I have to disagree with you. This is one of the greatest games I've played in a long while. It's freaking crazy. I was never a fan of the RE series, but I hope all of them are like this from now on.
Fair enough, I was just a bigger fan of the previous games. There was a lot more emphasis on getting closer to the goal by puzzle solving as well as action. RE4 mostly just seemed like mindless action.
Quote:

id agree, and i think its probably because all those ppl are new comers and would have no idea if you talked to them about any FF before that.
I'm not a newcomer to the Final Fantasy series, and I think X is an exceptional game.
Xenosaga is overrated. This game is more "movie" than game.
Gnostic: I disagree entirely with Chrono Cross, but I agree fully with FFT. And in some MMOs the monsters have respawn timers that last for eight hours, or even a whole day. That does make me sad.
ahhhh, ImoM.
that resapwn timer reminds me of some of FFXI... it makes facing up to a HNM so much more epic then if it was spammed back instantly when it died n_n.
Halo is somewhat overrated, although I do like it. It's mostly something XBox owners will take and say, "HA! We actually have a good game for this piece of [censored] console! It's ours, [female dogs], all ours!"
Without Halo, the XBox would be simply average.
Also, every Final Fantasy game ever made has been overrated. Sorry, guys. I like FF, and I really enjoy VII and IX, but to those who call it the greatest RPGs ever made...ugh, no.
There are other existing RPG franchises much better than FF.
Like what? Dragon Quest/Warrior is the only franchise that comes to mind that's competition for Final Fantasy.
I've never played Halo, (played a bit of Halo 2 once, but not enough to get into it) so I wont call it overrated. Although I am sick of hearing about it like it's the cure for AIDS or something. :p I'm sure it's not the be all end all of FPS games.
Dragon's Lair is the most overrated game in history: everyone rates it 2/10, it deserves a lower score.
Damn it, I hate that game, it's SO UNFAIR! >_<
You have to choose from 3-4 different pathways after every damn level, and one of them takes you back to the START! :mad2:
Halo 2 is definitly over rated. Not Halo 1 cause it IS that great, but Halo 2 definitly is.
To me it seems to be loved more due to the fact that its got a movie and an anime with it.Quote:
I don't even think Final Fantasy VII can be considered overrated anymore, it seems to get more hate that love these days...
Grand Theft Auto
and Also FF7 which seems to have reached a status impossible of any game (even if it is still my favorite game) :choc:
I agree with anyone who's said FF VII, I mean I love it and all. It was my first rpg/FF/and videogame in generel ever, but I dunno it's not THAT great... imo obviously.
 It isn't?
*deep breath*
Guitly Gear X2 #Reload (if you live in America)
SNK Vs Capcom Chaos (Again, America)
Doom 3 (If you don't have a PC made from Nasa and requires the blood of a virgin to run it)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2
Dead or Alive 3
King of Fighters Neowave
The Xenosaga Series and Xenogears as I consider it, are love-hate games. If you're not much into a huge storyline for a game, then don't play them. I don't see how anyone can call Xenosaga overrated. Just look at the reviews of the first two games. People are always calling down on it for its long cutscenes and that's why it never gets a high rating.
As for Xenogears, you can make that fact that it's overrated, but I'm going to go ahead and say it's not as well known as some people think. There are those hardcore console RPG players who don't visit online forums like these yet have never even heard of the game.
Halo I've always thought was overrated, but it's value is solely based on its replay value and its multiplayer value.
I thought FFT was overrated, but I'm too lazy to back that up.
Grand Theft Auto series
Final Fantasy XI and it's many expansions
Star Wars games
James Bond games (except Golden Eye for the N64)
Kingdom Hearts I
Dragon Quest is true RPG. It concentrates on battles and monsters that will constantly kill your party, and pretty much enforces the idea that levelling up is never a bad idea. Ever.
Keep in mind that I am NOT saying that Final Fantasy is bad (I wouldn't be on an FF forum if I was). It's just that some of them are just too easy. DQ/DW offers up a challenge every time, and requires a LOT of strategy during battles, instead of constantly mashing the Attack button and healing your party when necessary.
The Tales series and Phantasy Star series, while not well-known in the Western world, are best-sellers on the other side of the Pacific. While the SaGa series is rather loathed, it must be doing something right considering the large amount of games it has available.
So...there you go.
Saying that Dragon Quest is a true RPG because you have to level up is like saying Grand Theift Auto is a first person shooter because it involves guns. In order for it to be a true RPG, it would have to involve some actual role playing, something quite lacking in pretty much all Japanese console RPGs.
If DQ isn't an RPG, what is it, then? I don't understand that argument.
The term 'cRPG' (Console RPG) has been used to classify all games like DQ and FF. From what I can tell it's just a term people came up with to note that these games aren't really 'role playing games', but contain enough elements (despite lacking the fundamental one) to be classified as one.
Really, I don't have a great problem with people calling these games RPGs due to the fact that the term has become skewed, but to call DQ a 'true' RPG really is pushing it.
Halo: Just think it's overated. I played only a little bit of it but I didn't like it.
FFVII: I could pick any other Final Fantasy game over this one. It was mostly the graphics that turned me off. I know it's old but I just couldn't get into it with the grapics.
Some people I know like to role-play the whole sit in a tavern and talk thing, and some people like to role-play fighting. Now I do agree there could be much more personal choice in many cRPGs, but for the most part CRPGs just allow you to convey a personality, not make any real game-changing decisions.
Both are quite valid RPGs, when speaking of videogames, however.
Definitely WoW. Warcraft 3 is great and I play it all the time, but WoW is too expensive (15 friggin bucks a month) and it really isn't as good as they say it is, though it is a decent game.
Halo1,2 and 3. God its another space shooter get over it!
I'll add my voice to those supporting Ocarina of Time as the most-overrated game ever.
Repeatedly rated in the top ten if not the best game ever by many publications and fan polls, it's not even the best Zelda game!
It follows the cookie-cutter Ganon/Zelda/Triforce storyline whereby you walk Link to each of the Temples containing either a piece of the Triforce itself or a "key" to reaching the Triforce, defeat the boss, rinse and repeat...oh, and play a few minigames like target practice in between.
In addition, OoT's game world was really empty and "dry" to me, and while the graphics were good for their time, particularly for a real-time action fantasy game, they certainly weren't the best out there.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love the Zelda series, it's still right at the top of my list, as a series. The games are always complete and well-made, and occasionally innovative. And I love OoT, it's a great game...but greatest of all time? Not even close. ALttP has very much the same overarching story and gameplay, but the game world is more richly developed in every way...3D graphics and cutscenes does not equal better, people!!!
I even consider Majora's Mask to be a superior gaming experience. People shun it because it doesn't have the epic Triforce storyline, but MM has a much richer game world and is a much better challenge.
