Zidane. I like to be able to steal equipment from enemies/bosses before it becomes available for you later in the game.
I think either Garnet or Freya.
Freya because she can jump avoiding damage and attacks that kill the whole party and stuff. Also for Dragon Crest.
Garnet because I think she has better summons than Eiko and because I really don't care about holy.
zidane... i lvled him up early so hes was a monster for a while
Freya. Her Jump skill in Trance is awesome.

Steiner. Highest Attack, HP, and Defense is usually a bonus for me. =] Also, Shock rocks. As does his Trance.

It's tough to say since the characters are very specialised, so nobody is really a jack of all trades. However, I found Freya to be very useful with her Jump ability and Dragoon skills, especially Dragon's Crest. Her normal attack power isn't on par with Zidane and Steiner's, though.
Steiner
Easily Quina. No contest AT ALL. She is probably one of the best characters in the entire FF series. I'm not exaggerating either.
Probably Freya. She has a strong physical attack. Plus she has White Draw just in case you run out of MP for the other characters. Other skills Freya has that are usefull are Jump (enemy is unable to attack you) and Rei's Wind (Regen on all Characters). A very good all-round character.
zidane.steal,thievery,dyne.or maybe dagger.trance eidolon rawks.
aside from the obvious, zidane (cause the game would be difficult with him in KO the whole time....hrm... do i smell a challenge?)
i would say vivi actually. his black magic is usually useful against any enemy...makes steiner even more versatile, and refl. X2 + auto refl. = burnt baddies

Vivi if you have shadow absobring rocks.
Quina. Quina can kill almost everything in the game with one hit until about the end of disc 2. The all s/he needs are two hits and not to be attacked inbetween. You don't get much better than that.
However, that's only if you're playing a speed or lv. 1 game. Overall, I find Vivi most useful. He can, from the very beginning of the game, attack every enemy at once, and he's pretty consistently powerful. He makes Steiner become more powerful, and when you couple him early on with Garnet and she casts reflect on him, he's even more powerful. And he's so cute :love:
That's tough. Freya, Zidane, Quina, and Steiner all have 9,999 damage moves (if you put the time and effort into getting them/powering them up). I'd have to go with Quina, though, because of the vast versatility he/she offers other than Frog Drop.

I have a secret for you did you know if you have someone to cast reflect on the hole party and then have Vivi cast a magic attack on the whole party the magic will hit the enemy four times in a row. So you know who I choose all the mages first Vivi, then Quina, and then Garnet, we're still missing a red and green mage though oh and also a purple.
Mighty guard will get you out of a lot of situations.
Dagger, cos she summons and heals. You always need a healer!
Vivi... yeah... Vivi was my most useful character in FF9. Except that one time my brother decided we needed to test out his ultimate attack....

Healing magic, Chemist to use items, good Eidolons, useful Trance (yep, IMO Eidolon is useful, kill me o_O) and with the right equipment, even a decent physical attacker. Robes have great defense, and she is a girl, thus, she can equip some good equip that boys can't.
I wouldn't have minded having to play the Water Shrine battle with just Dagger and Eiko; with those two in your party you're frickin' invincible; they're like Red Mages who can't equip any decent weapons. I love them!
I think Vivi sucks. You spend the whole game making him learn spells, of which about two are useful at the end, and even if you get Firaga, Dagger can summon Ifrit for slightly less MP, with no damage penalty for splitting it across all enemies, plus she can heal.
And his ultimate attack is a joke.
I reckon that ones the most useful.

Amarant was really useful because of Chakra. Vivi however can really enhance your party, especially with Steiner. I wasn't really into the White Mages last time I played, basically because they're like the same character, just with different summons. It also seems that 9 is the game that made it a rule that the White Mage also has to be a summoner. I dont like that, although it was helpful advice for playing FFV.
Freya's good too cause she's definately the Red Mage of the party. I think next time I play I'm gonna really try to get Quina real strong.

Okay, EIKO! I mean, hell...she ain't all powah but she's got all that White Magic powah and Summons that pwn Garnet's...Powah isn't everything so I vote Eiko.
i usually use zidane, amarant, vivi and garnet. i consider zidane, garnet and vivi must haves because of garnets white magic but im acutally not too sure why vivi is so much of a must have but hes just cool. two of the most useful characters are amarant and freya.
amarant has aura and some other good abilities but his best is probably aura. and amarant is a good fighter.
freya has tons of useful abilities like reis wind and loads of better ones as well as jump and that really cool trance jump and is also a great fighter.
having zidane, garnet, amarant and freya would be a perfect party. it has heavy damage, healing and loads of very useful support magic.
amarant and freya are two very useful characters.
Steiner just hits too hard to ignore.

I say Zidane. I'm obsessed with him. (well not really cuz I'm obsessed with Tidus)
He's always been the most powerful at my parties so that's why.
Steiner is pretty awesome too.
Vivi's not that bad either.
Zidane's very useful. ^_^ I mostly find Zidane, Steiner, Vivi and Garnet best(never found Eiko useful).
